EASY ACCESS TO GRANDAD BLUFF AGAIN!
It's been closed for almost a year but Bliss Road will open again at 4 PM Friday afternoon with a ribbon cutting. The repair, on the road, is finally finished.

SOME WEATHER HISTORY
On November 1, 1933 the temperature rose to 80 degrees in La Crosse. That's the latest 80 degree reading even taken here and it's also the warmest November temperature ever recorded in La Crosse.

With sunshine and temperatures pushing 65, it's a far cry from what it was like 20 years ago today.
This is the 20th anniversary of the Great Halloween Blizzard.
According to the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE:
During the evening of November 1st, arctic air moved into the region, changing the precipitation to all snow. The snow continued until midday on November 2nd. 6 to 10" fell across Winona and Houston counties in southeast Minnesota, and La Crosse county in southwest Wisconsin. Meanwhile, 3 to 6" of snow fell across the remainder of southeast Minnesota, portions of western Wisconsin, and a small portion of northeast Iowa. These amounts are small in comparison to the snowfall from Red Wing, MN northward to the Duluth, MN area. This winter storm dropped 28.4" of snow on the Twin Cities (single storm record for the metropolitan record) while Duluth received 36.9" of snow (the largest single storm total in MN history).
Wind speeds of 30 to 50 mph, and gusts to 60 mph on November 1st and 2nd, created blizzard conditions across eastern South Dakota, Minnesota, western Iowa, and extreme western Wisconsin. This storm closed schools, businesses, bridges, and public transportation systems for several days. Clean up was hindered by numerous accidents and abandoned vehicles.
At least 20 people died in Minnesota due to traffic accidents or heart attacks from digging out after the storm. In addition, two Wisconsin hunters died when their boat was capsized in Lake Onalaska during the storm.

Lynne reviews the TEXAS ROADHOUSE.
"I see, on your blog, that you have a Texas Roadhouse going in. We ate there once and it was so noisy we couldn't even talk to Jennifer's mom and dad who were sitting across from us. We prefer eating out at places where we can have a conversation. We drive by it and it is busy all the time but we won't go again."

Gladys remembers we did do some trick or treating when we were kids but she added, "Certainly not to the degree it is done today. I live on main street and usually have a hundred kids. They come with big bags, grab and go.
I think you kids were in school before we took you trick or treating. Now, the kids are so much younger when they come out. I remember Lee always dressed up in a costume. It did spook some of the kids!"

Another restaurant is coming to town and will open in mid-November in the Mall. It's the TEXAS ROADHOUSE which, of course, will feature Texas size steaks and fall-off-the-bone ribs. Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, he locks himself in. His heart is pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps.

Our last week of Daylight Savings Time. We turn the clocks back Sunday. Then it's almost dark by the time Rita comes home from work. She hates that but she won't have to do it very much longer.
I just had a thought. Once Eric and Paul retire all the cousins will be back to the way we were when we started; No work and unable to walk.

THE LATEST FROM LYNNE
"I am working hours and hours each day editing photos and camcorder films from the past 1 1/2 years.
We have a yard full of leaves but the trees still have lots to fall. I have used the leaf blower three times so far so Bob could do his final mowing. The cleanup is done by a few guys we hire. No more back breaking work for us."

Rita called, this afternoon, and I couldn't find the phone. Do you know how frustrating that is? The phone keeps playing the music, you're running around in circles and can't figure out where the sound is coming from. I finally did find it but, of course, she had hung up by that time.
Oh! guess where it was! Are you ready for this? I'm not sure I even want to tell you. On the other hand, you all know how spacy I am so you won't be surprised when I tell you the phone was in my pocket. Hard to believe but true.
Almost 10:30 and I'm still running around in my bathrobe. With our all morning rain and heavy gray clouds, what's the rush?Slowly, the rain is moving east so I can dress, take the garbage out and run to Co-op for a head of lettuce which I forgot yesterday.
I guess it's better we get rained on today. The kids won't want to get their costumes all wet tomorrow night. It should be a good night for the goblins and ghosts. Temperatures will rise into the 50's tomorrow afternoon and there's no more rain on the horizon until later in the week.

I THINK, AS FAR AS DONNIE AND LINDA ARE CONCERNED, HAMPTON INNS ARE HAMPTON OUT
Donnie reports, "After nine days on the road Linda was half sick as we arrived at Ft. Stockton last night. We had been staying at adequate Holiday Inns, but I thought we should go up a notch and give Linda a bit more comfort our last night out, so we pulled into Hampton Suites, about 20% more costly than Holiday Inn.
I asked for a room on the third floor. The clerk was confused and slow, but finally gave me a key, to a room on the second floor. Before I could I ask again for the third floor, the man recently ahead of me was back, saying over my shoulder that the room he had been assigned was already occupied. That threw the clerk into even greater confusion, and I could see I was not going to get to the third floor any time soon, so I accepted the 2nd floor key and fetched Linda from the car.
Although the lobby appeared marginally more "luxurious" than those at Holiday Inn, the elevator surrounded us with an annoying loud fan drone, and the room--again, only superficially luxurious--smelled of something. I gave Linda a last-minute chance to cancel and move to Holiday Inn, but she was exhausted, and we settled in, best we could.
The room heater-cooler fan was comically loud for a sleeping place, an airport noise, really; and the toilet, upon being flushed, exploded with a sucking sound that made us leap up in fear of being pulled into the Ft. Stockton sewer system.
We made it through the night. This morning I attempted a shower, to try and get some part of my money's worth out of Hampton Inn. No hot water! So I took an old-fashioned sponge bath and set to packing as quickly as possible. As I carried bags to the car I could see and hear the same frazzled desk clerk taking calls from other guests angry about the water."

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS??
FROM DONNIE: "You've heard nothing but drought from us. So, imagine what happens when we go to an actual desert. That's right, downpour in Phoenix. Streets are flooded.
The average daily high, here, is 84 this time of year....yesterday in the middle of the afternoon it was 61. I should rent myself out to bring the opposite weather wherever I go."

WE'VE COME A LONG WAY
Eric Dregni, in his book "Vikings in the Attic", talks about a magazine article, published in 1840, which told about the many Norwegian immigrants arriving in Boston and the fact that many residents of Boston didn't know where Norway was.
In 2001 a Norwegian couple from Trondheim visited Boston and commented that many Bostonians didn't know where Norway was.

There's an article in the La Crosse Tribune, this morning, that I found interesting. It's a commentary by Dr. Zorba Paster, who you may have heard on the PBS Ideas Network.
He says, if people took care of four common health issues it could save a million lives.

I have all the health issues but, unlike the majority of Americans, I'm taking care of all of them. Most people are ignoring the four issues.
If you're over 50, you probably need an aspirin a day. Check with your doctor and he'll probably tell you to take it. My doctors did and I do.
Most people who have high blood pressure are not taking care of it. I do now but I didn't take care of it soon enough so I have kidney disease. (high blood pressure is the 2nd leading cause of kidney disease. Diabetes is #1)
Most people with high cholesterol aren't taking care of it. I'm taking my medicine and the doctors say my cholesterol numbers, now, are super great.
And, there are still too many people smoking..I'm not one of them anymore.
So, I'm doing all I can. If you're not you're gonna die. On the other hand, so am I. When you come right down to it, we're all headed for the same end. It's just a matter of when.

Just in time for Halloween from LONELY PLANET it's the 10 spookiest buildings in the world and some of them are pretty far out. Great article. Clicking on "Lonely Planet" will take you there.
I look down the list, every day, of famous people having birthdays and I've noticed that if they're under 60 I have no clue who they are. I'm afraid the parade has passed me by.
One of the lovely ones over 60 is Marion Ross who played the mom on HAPPY DAYS. She is celebrating her 83rd birthday today and, boy, does she look good!

I mentioned, the other day, that everybody talked about the World Series when we were kids and now I don't hear anyone mention it. I thought, maybe, it was just me but, I guess not.
The La Crosse Tribune is running a poll, today, asking, "Are you watching the World Series?" 4% say "YES". 73% say "NO" and the rest said they watched "a few games". Wonder what Babe Ruth would think of that?

An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond that was properly shaped for swimming so he fixed it up with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some orange and lime trees.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond to look it over, as he hadn't been there for a while.
He grabbed a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.
As he came closer, he saw a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.
He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.
One woman shouted at him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"
The old man frowned and said, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond.
Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."
Some old men can still think fast.

The nut is so rare that every tree and every nut is owned by the government. It's against the law to taste them and, if you want to export them, you need a licence for each and every nut.
So, stick that in your pistachio.

I had an email from her this morning.
"Hello from El Paso. We're in the Doubletree, on the 11th floor, right in the downtown area -- the theatre where Don will attend the concert is just a couple of blocks away. and, as a matter of fact, we ran into his friend, the conductor, whose room is just around the corner from ours -but I'll bet he's in a suite. No complaints about our room tho - love the view from up high - very comfortable room.
Beautiful drive so far -- love this southern part of Texas . We stayed in a little historic hotel in Fort Davis last night. - that's where Macdonald Observatory is - dramatic countryside- scrub desert, lots of cactus and yuccas, rock hills - we could see remnants of the wildfires from several months ago.
We'll head out early this morning for the drive through new Mexico up to Phoenix and Surprise -- I suppose it will take us at least 8 hours to get there."
I had an email from her this morning.
"Hello from El Paso. We're in the Doubletree, on the 11th floor, right in the downtown area -- the theatre where Don will attend the concert is just a couple of blocks away. and, as a matter of fact, we ran into his friend, the conductor, whose room is just around the corner from ours -but I'll bet he's in a suite. No complaints about our room tho - love the view from up high - very comfortable room.
Beautiful drive so far -- love this southern part of Texas . We stayed in a little historic hotel in Fort Davis last night. - that's where Macdonald Observatory is - dramatic countryside- scrub desert, lots of cactus and yuccas, rock hills - we could see remnants of the wildfires from several months ago.
