Would you believe (per Roger's "funny") I once swam in Lake Palestine in east Texas. I had a friend whose family lived there. They had a large farm and we were out in the pasture one day and a herd of feral hogs decided they "liked" me and charged!! The was one tree in the pasture and I learned how to climb trees real fast!
Starting a new blog that you may want to check out from time to time..or maybe not. It's up to you!

HOW DRY IS IT IN TEXAS?
No! This didn't come from Donnie or Willard. Rita and Roger got it from somebody.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was playing poker online with a buddy out of Longview. He said he'd killed a mosquito that was carrying a canteen.
My nephew in Dime Box told me the chicken farmers were giving the chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs.
But just this week, here in Bryant, I saw a fire hydrant bribing a dog.
In Lake Palestine, we caught a 20 lb catfish that had ticks on it!

A HOLIDAY JUST FOR ME: I FORGOT DAY!
This really is an official holiday set aside to remember all those birthdays, anniversaries and other special holidays you forgot during the year. Of course, if you forget I forgot day I don't know what you do.
I CAN'T BELIEVE I SLEPT THROUGH THE STORM
After the hottest day, so far, this year that saw the heat index soar to 115 in La Crosse and 104 in Viroqua and Rochester we got slammed by a big time storm. I'll bet Rita and Roger are glad they got back for this one!
This is the report from the National Weather Service.
During the early evening of July 1 around 7 pm, a line of showers and thunderstorms formed over south central Minnesota and north central Iowa. These storms were initially on a cold front. However, the storms over south central Minnesota began racing east ahead of the front, into the hot and humid air mass that was over the Upper Mississippi River Valley region. The result of this was numerous reports of severe wind gusts as well as wind damage across much of southeast Minnesota into southwest into central Wisconsin. A few reports of wind damage were also received in northeast Iowa.
What was most interesting about this severe weather event was that even though the storms were weakening as they tracked east through the region, they still produced plenty of severe weather. The cause of the weakening was a combination of temperatures cooling through the evening and the environment turning less favorable for storms to organize over Wisconsin. Nevertheless, severe wind gusts and wind damage occurred into areas as far east as Sparta, Tomah, Necedah and Big Flats in the Upper Mississippi River Valley region.
Storm reports included 58 MPH winds in Rochester with trees down. Power lines were blown down in Trempealeau, Onalaska and La Crescent,
Around La Crosse there were trees down and several trees were uprooted along Lake Onalaska with 70 MPH winds reported. Sparta reported roof damage and trees down.
There were a couple of other interesting reports from Minnesota. Dassel, Minnesota, reported grapefruit size hail and Category One Hurricane force wind gusts were reported at Marshall.
All of that mean old weather is long gone from our area and headed into the Ohio Valley to give them a miserable day today.
AND, I MISSED THE WHOLE THING!

LYNNE REPORTED IN FROM VIROQUA
Bob and I drove up yesterday morning to spend some time with Mom. We haven't spent much time outside as way too hot for humans. We did drive to the cemetery yesterday and I weeded and pruned flowers and Bob watered on grave sites of my Grandma and Grandpa Enerson, Mom and Dad's, and Dad Blair. Looks very nice. Flowers are loving the weather. They did need water though.
Today we have just lounged around talking. Of course, I can't just sit so I have edited, saved, made dvds of many of my camcorder films.
In a few minutes we are ordering fish dinners from The Viking to enjoy in the comforts of home. Then we take off for home again and in the morning leave for Daniel, Jon, Derrick, and Jennifer's for a couple days. Not sure what all we will be doing there but know it will be fun.

EVEN DULUTH GOT WARMED UP!
The high temperature in Duluth today was 91 degrees. Would you believe that this was the first 90 degree weather Duluth has seen since July 31st, 2006. Five years ago.
THEY'RE BACK!
Rita, Roger and the girls got back home around 4 this afternoon. All safe and sound but, I'm sure, they're ready for a good nights sleep. They've been on the road for two days.
OUCH!
At 2:00 PM it was 96 degrees with a heat index of 106. Just think. Donnie and Linda go through this day after day after day after day.
You're probably thinking that one day of this is enough. Yes it is and relief is on the way. Tomorrows high will only get up to around 89. After today, that will seem like jacket weather.
SOMETIMES TWITTER RUNS A BIT SLOW
There appears to be a good reason for that. Twitter released some statistics yesterday and among them was the fact that users send 200 million tweets per day. If you wanted to put all those tweets into book form it would take 10 million pages. That sure would make a long movie!
WE SURE BROKE A LOT OF WEATHER RECORDS IN JUNE

CRAVINGS
Oh, what I'd give to eat one of these DOREEN'S HAM SLICES ON THE GRILL
For the past couple of days I've been tempted to pig out on something really salty..like a whole bag of potato chips or one of Doreen's ham slices or a big plate of chicken wings. Maybe it's the heat. In any event, I've remained strong and have not given in to temptation.....so far.

I think today is the day that Rita and Roger and the girls return home from their vacation. I'll call them later this morning to see where they are.

WHAT DONNIE LEARNED AT LUNCH TODAY
At lunch with some visiting friends, I remarked that Linda often joins me to watch TV golf tournaments on weekends, even though Linda has never played. Even I am not that interested in the tournies, but it is about the only thing on TV that is quiet, slow, and even restful. And my friend reported a news item on therapy for Alzheimers patients based on the same conclusion: patients are urged to watch golf, precisely because it does not overly excite, but rather relaxes them.
Note that watching (or even playing) golf does not prevent mental disorders!
WHAT SHALL I EAT?
4th of July weekend and a hot weekend to go with it. I think I'll head to the kitchen and make some tuna salad. Of course, as soon as I open the can, Thunder will come running from under the bed where he's taking a snooze. He knows his human won't have tuna without sharing some with him.
WATER WOES

ROGER MAY NOT WANT TO COME BACK YET
He's doesn't like heat and, I'm afraid, we're going to plenty of that the next couple of days. I was out, this morning, between 9 and 10 and I was sweating by the time I got back home. If a little hot weather bothers ME it's gonna KILL Roger.
HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN OVER THE LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN CAUSEWAY IN LOUISANA?
It used to be the worlds longest cross-sea bridge but no more. China can now claim the worlds longest bridge with the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge which just opened and is 26 miles long. That makes it 2.5 miles longer than Pontchartrain.

HOW BIG IS THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION?
I guess the space station is roomier than it looks. NASA just posted a fun fact on Twitter. The ISS has 32,333 cubic feet of pressurized volume which provides more living room than a conventional 6 bedroom house. Of course, I still don't know how roomy that is until I can find someone with a six bedroom house.
THIS SOUNDS LIKE A TEXAN! (Thanks Carl)
In 1952, Armon M. Sweat, Jr., a member of the Texas House of Representatives, was asked about his position on whiskey. What follows is his exact answer (taken from the Political Archives of Texas ):
" If you mean whiskey, the devils brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster that defiles innocence, dethrones reason, destroys the home, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the bread from the mouths of little children; if you mean that evil drink that topples Christian men and women from the pinnacles of righteous and gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, shame, despair, helplessness, and hopelessness, then, my friend, I am opposed to it with every fiber of my being.
However, if by whiskey you mean the oil of conversation, the philosophic wine, the elixir of life, the ale that is consumed when good fellows get together, that puts a song in their hearts and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes; if you mean Christmas cheer, the stimulating sip that puts a little spring in the step of an elderly gentleman on a frosty morning; if you mean that drink that enables man to magnify his joy, and to forget life’s great tragedies and heartbreaks and sorrow; if you mean that drink the sale of which pours into Texas treasuries untold millions of dollars each year, that provides tender care for our little crippled children, our blind, our deaf, our dumb, our pitifully aged and infirm, to build the finest highways, hospitals, universities, and community colleges in this nation, then my friend, I am absolutely, unequivocally in favor of it.
This is my position, and as always, I refuse to compromise on matters of principle."

DID YOU SEE THE NEW STUDY OF THOSE AWFUL TASTING DIET SODAS???
The University of Texas in San Antonio followed 474 diet soda drinkers ages 65 to 74 for nearly 10 years and found that the waist size of diet drinkers grew 70% more than the folks who avoided diet soda. They say the bigger the waist size the bigger the health risks. So what are you getting from those diet drinks? A bunch of crappy chemicals that taste like aspirin to me.
RIVERFEST STARTS TODAY!

HEAT ADVISORY
A HEAT ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TO 8 PM FRIDAY
TEMPERATURES WILL CLIMB INTO THE MID 90'S TO AROUND 100 FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THE HIGH TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL CREATE HEAT INDICES OF 100 TO 110.
It ain't gonna be all that cool today either. With a high of 88 and a heat index as high as 98, I guess I'll have to turn the A/C on.

WHAT'S IN A HANDSHAKE?
According to Wikipedia, the handshake goes back, at least, to the 5th century in ancient Greece.
The Guinness Book of Records lists Joseph Lazarow (who was mayor of Atlantic City at the time) as the record holder for shaking the most hands in a single day. In July in 1977 he shook 11,000 hands. Before that the record was held by President Theodore Roosevelt who shook 8,513 hands on New Years Day, 1907, at a White House reception.

No wonder I didn't know those two people at Yellowstone. Rita and Roger didn't know who the hell they were either. And, Carls guess wasn't any better than mine.
Rita and Roger just wrote "You dummies – We were at Old Faithful but those are complete strangers in front of us. Not a clue who they are. Just wanted to let you know where we were. Signed – Old Faithful"

REMEMBER HENIE YOUNGMAN?
That was back in the days when comedy was funny.
My neighbor knocked on my door at 2:30 am this morning, can you believe that..... 2:30am?! Luckily for him I was still up playing my Bagpipes.
I saw a poor old lady fall over today on the ice!! At least I presume she was poor - she only had $1.20 in her purse.
My girlfriend thinks that I'm a stalker. Well, she's not exactly my girlfriend - yet.
A wife says to her husband you're always pushing me around and talking behind my back. He says what do you expect? You're in a wheel chair.
I was explaining to my wife last night that when you die you get reincarnated but must come back as a different creature. She said she would like to come back as a cow. I said, "You're obviously not listening. "

DONNIE COMMENTS ON SOUTH TEXAS WEATHER
I get up at dawn to do the outdoor tasks before it gets too hot....which is by 8 A.M. Even then, I'm left soaked and exhausted.
Between 8 A.M. and 6 P.M. we retreat indoors, sometimes daring a walk at sundown.
Sitting, in the shade, on the back porch can be fairly pleasant any time of day, with occasional breezes and the always entertaining wildlife. But ya gotta love hot weather. I always have but I'm losing some of that enthusiasm. Frankly, I'm bloody sick of this climate.

WOULD YOU PAY $10 MILLION FOR A ONE BEDROOM APARTMENT?
You, perhaps, would not (even if you had it) but, apparently there are a lot of people who are more than happy to grab one before they're all gone.

There's a very interesting story in the La Crosse Tribune this morning. Archaeologists have discovered a 500 year old Indian home near Holmen. Many other artifacts have been found in the same area in past years. Click here to read the story
I'm thinking that the Indians probably had a village in that area but when the Norwegians moved in the Indians moved out.

SUNNY AND WARM; MY KIND OF DAY
Yesterdays high was 79 and will be shooting for 83 this afternoon under sunny skies for the second day in a row. That's a big deal, around here, this year. We've seen a lot more cloudy days than we have sunny ones. Independence Day looks good too with sunshine and highs in the mid-80's.
BUSY DAYS AHEAD FOR DONNIE AND LINDA
Donnie wrote, "Unusually busy, all of a sudden. Tomorrow it's lunch with some foreign service friends visiting in Austin. Dinner tomorrow night with other friends from North Carolina. Then good friend (the other Don) arrives for the 4th of July."
I don't remember how many years ago it was but brother Don was here and the other Don came to La Crosse and joined us for Riverfest or the 4th of July (can't remember which).
Rita and I first met the other Don when we were in Panama. That was back in the days when there were still a few dinosaurs running around.

CARL HAD THE ANSWER (DOESN'T HE ALWAYS?)
He knew who the two old geezers with the geyser, in-between, were. He said, "It's probably been a long time since you saw Rick (on the left) and you know his dad (on the right)."
Well, now, I figured it had something to do with Rita and Roger but I was thinking the one on the left looked too old for Rick and the one on the right looked too young for Roger so don't count on me to pick out the bad guy in a line-up.

A NEAT SURPRISE
I got a package from Donnie this morning. Remember that old picture taken at grandma and grandpa's of Bobby, Billy, Rita, Carl, Donnie and me when we were kids? We're out in front of the old back screened porch.
Donnie had it put on a coffee mug for me. I love it too much to use it. I suppose a normal person could drink from it but I'm too much of a klutz to take a chance at breaking it.

AUNT WILDA HAS ALL THE NEWS!
Another beautiful day but I didn't get outdoors. I am bothered by my balance again so I decided I had better stay where I can hold on to things. It's much better now.
Called brother Bob and he was ready to go to the hospital so now I wonder what he found out.
I wrote to Linda for her birthday. No rain must be tough when things will not grow. The grass on my lawn is really growing since we had six inches of rain in one day.
Bob and Lynne are coming this week. Hope the weather is nice so we can sit on the porch. I like to sit there when I eat if it is warm.
I had a letter from Cousin Mary. Frank was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Mary had the same surgery five years ago and she is fine now.
Trig called last week. He has bought another store.

I CALLED UNCLE BOB TO WISH HIM HAPPY BIRTHDAY
He sounded good but he's ailing. He had terrible back pain on Saturday so he went into emergency. He has to go back in this afternoon and they're going to do an ultrasound That doesn't sound like much of a birthday party to me.
Eric and Bert were here this weekend to help him celebrate this birthday. They came late Saturday and went back home yesterday.
WHO WROTE "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU"
Uncle Bob's birthday got me to thinking about that this morning. I looked it up and it turns out to be an interesting story of how the song was born. Clice here "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU" to read all about it.
WILLARDS MORNING REPORT FROM HOUSTON
Another HOT week of drought begins. Upper 90's all week.
I checked the Riverside Web Cam. See preparations are underway for the 4th of July weekend.
There's a big show here Monday. Fireworks have been banned in Harris County, and all surrounding counties, because of the drought and fire danger. A fine up to $2,000 if caught. May not have to buy Buddy earplugs afterall.

Clouds with a 50% chance of thunderstorms. We've had more than enough days like that this season.
Rita, Roger and the girls will have great vacation weather today. The Worland forecast calls for sunshine and highs near 80.

A REPORT FROM LYNNE
Bob and I celebrated our 47th anniversary last night at our favorite Mexican restaurant, Hacienda Real, right here in Janesville. Our anniversary was June 20. Daniel, Jon, Derrick and Jennifer were home that weekend so we had fun with them then.
The story of the violinist was so interesting. People are in such a hurry, anymore, that they don't stop to enjoy what's around us. I have camcorded many people who are entertaining on the streets or in parks on our travels. There is so much undiscovered talent. And, we really enjoyed the article on the woman named Viroqua. I sent that on to many.
REPORT FROM DUANE FROM RAPID CITY
"Flowers ruined last night. Nasty, mean hail and rain storm. Pea and golf ball size hail stones. They yard and decks are a mess and, they say, more thunderstorms and hail tonight."

PERCEPTION. . . Something To Think About . . .
THE SITUATION
In Washington , DC , at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, this man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about an hour. During that time, approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After about 3 minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule.
About 4 minutes later:
The violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.
At 6 minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.
At 10 minutes:
A 3-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent - without exception - forced their children to move on quickly.
At 45 minutes:
The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.
After 1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold-out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each to sit and listen to him play the same music.
This is a true story. Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the D.C. Metro Station, was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.
This experiment raised several questions:
*In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
*If so, do we stop to appreciate it?
*Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?
One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made . . .
How many other things are we missing as we rush through life?
PERCEPTION. .

QUICK NOTES
The only known tintype photo of Billy the Kid sold for $2.3 million in Denver last night.
I wonder what a photo of me will bring a hundred years from now??I heard the first 4th of July firecrackers explode in the neighborhood at 2:45 this morning. Did they wake me? Are you kidding? I was already up.
Note to Rita and Rick: I read your comments this morning.
I JUST READ AN INTERESTING STATISTIC
By 2025 60% of all the people on earth will be living in cities.
I can hear it now. There's a time in the future when the kids will say, "Mommy, what's a farmer?"
I know I'm getting old when I say to myself, "The world is changing too much too fast. I'm glad I'm as old as I am."
