HOT "D"
Dallas hit 100 again today. That makes 36 days in a row at 100 or more.
FROM RON:
"You wrote about the Mustard museum in Middelton WI today. Penny and I visited the museum after we stopped to see you this past May. We have also been to the Vinegar museum in Roslyn SD."
COOLER WEATHER?
I see highs in the 70's for next week. Maybe cooler days are right around the corner.
SLEEPLESS IN WISCONSIN
Woe is me! I was up most of the night. Slept good for a couple of hours and then woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. I never had trouble sleeping until the kidneys started to fail me. It's a common symptom of the diseased and I don't like it!
Meanwhile, there are new warnings, in USA TODAY, about kidney and liver damage caused by using over the counter drugs. Click here to read the article.

I'VE GOT FOOD ON THE BRAIN TODAY
Found a recipe from one of Donnies favorite places, WHOLE FOODS. Click here for Honey Mustard Salmon Salad. It sounds really good and it's something I could eat.
FIRES
We haven't heard much about forest fires this season but two were started by lightening in the Black Hills yesterday. One of those fires, near Bear Mountain, was still not under control early this morning.
MUSTARD DAY!
There's only one place to be on NATIONAL MUSTARD DAY and that's at the NATIONAL MUSTARD MUSEUM in Middleton, Wisconsin!

BEER FESTIVALS EVERYWHERE YOU GO!
Check this website BEER FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD-2011 to check them all out. It's amazing how many there are and there's sure to be one near you. For Wisconsin it's The Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison a week from tomorrow. More than 100 brewpubs and microbreweries represented on the shores of Lake Menona sounds like a party to me!
BODY
Three men will be charged, today, with hiding a corpse on the North Side of La Crosse. The body was found, yesterday afternoon, in Red Cloud Park. That's a new one on me. One man was quoted as saying not very many people visit that park. I can believe it. I've never heard of it.
LEFSEHENGE
Please note in Wisconsin history: This is the date, in 1850, that the Order of Druids was formed in Wisconsin. This was the Norwegian synod of the Druids. Lutefisk, Lefse and lots of dancing.
KIDS NEED SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Catholic Charities is accepting donations, today from 11 am to 6pm, at the La Crosse Center for school supplies. Notebooks, pens, crayons, backpacks and whatever else you can think of is needed.
There are also drop off bins at Kmart, ShopKo, Office Depot, Inland Label and Marketing and the UPS Store.

GOOFY SCANDINAVIANS
Did you read about the Swedish guy who's been arrested for trying to split an atom in his kitchen?? As a hobby, he says, he tried to build a nuclear reactor and had a bit of a meltdown on his stove.
I'm a bit surprised about this. Sounds to me like something a Norwegian would be more likely to do.

TEXAS DROUGHT
The news just keeps getting worse for Texas. Time for Donnie and Linda to think about plan "B" I think.
The Climate Prediction Center announced, today, that it looks like La Nina will be returning within the next six months. La Nina is the culprit that contributes to dry conditions over Texas and, if it does return, it means the Texas drought is far from over.

CLIMATE
Our average temperature, in La Crosse, for July, was 77.6 degrees which is 3.6 degrees above normal. We were just a touch above our normal rainfall for the month as well. Not a bad month, overall, except that I had to run the A/C more than I like. I'd rather have the open windows with the fresh air but it was a little to warm for much of that.
LAUGHING IN RIO
I see Comedy Central is expanding to Brazil. This will be their biggest foreign market with 200 million additional viewers. Comedy central is also popular in Europe as well as New Zealand and Israel.
WILLARD WAS COMPLAINING THIS MORNING
80 degrees in Houston at 6 A.M. while it was 65 here in La Crosse. I'll try to send a shot of cool air down to Texas.
THE NIGHTS ARE GETTING LONGER
I sure do notice the later sunrise these days. At 5:00 A.M. it's still dark. We're losing more than 2 minutes of daylight each morning now. The snow and cold I can live with. If we could get rid of the ice and long nights I wouldn't have a problem with winter.
WHAT A SAD ENDING
They found the body of 6 year old Junior Thao just north of Goose Island yesterday. He had been missing since Monday when he went swimming off Pettibone Park. The river is so beautiful and inviting. It's hard to remember how treacherous it can, also, be.
OLD AGE IS ONE PAIN AFTER THE OTHER
I don't see any major weather change ahead but the arthritis in the thumb on my right hand has sure been hurting the past couple of days.
I never cease to be amazed at how fast the time goes. It seems like it was just yesterday that I made my "every six months round" of doctor visits and now, here it is, almost time for all those visits, again, in September. I'm hoping I haven't deteriorated any more than necessary.

CHER'S A NIGHT OWL
It was just after 4, this morning, that she tweeted that she was off to bed. I keep telling people they need to GET UP around 3 or 4 in the morning. It's the best time of the day. What a waste to spend it in bed.
There's no doubt about it. I inherited my fathers "early bird" gene.
WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT AUGUST 4TH?
Jacob celebrates his birthday with President Obama today. This is the anniversary of the U.S. COAST GUARD which was founded in 1790. It wasn't called the Coast Guard in those days, however. It was known as The Revenue Cutter Service. Whatever the hell that means. And, it was on August 4, 1830 that they drew up the plans for the city of Chicago.

ANY JANE AUSTIN FANS OUT THERE?
It was her that said," A large income is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of."
ANOTHER REFRESHING SUMMER DRINK FOR YOU
CANTALOUPE FIZZ
- 1 cantaloupe cubed
- 1 cup gin
- 1 1/2 cups ice cubes
- 2 tbs sugar
Blend until smooth.
WHAT'S BEHIND THE IQUITOS DOOR??
Wouldn't you love to know what's behind this door? Donnie took this in Iquitos, Peru. Both Donnie and I have been there but not at the same time.
Iquitos is the largest rain forest city in Peru and is home to about 371,000 people. Not a village, by any means. Even so, there are no roads to get you there. If you want to visit you'll have to choose between a boat or plane.
The average temperature hovers between 87 and 89 all year-round. The average rainfall is around 113 inches per year. No, that's not a mistake. 113 inches is correct and you don't even want to know what the humidity is like.
A typical dish would be fried plantain, about the same as our banana but not quite so sweet, which is mashed with fried pork fat with chorizo (spicy sausage) on the side. It's tasty, hot and spicy and called Tacacho.
Spanish is the normal language, although, I had no trouble using english. The other language spoken in the area is Quechua which is the language the Inca spoke but the language was spoken in the Andes long before the Inca arrived and it's still in wide use, in the Andes, today.

ANOTHER STABBING ON 3RD STREET EARLY THIS MORNING
4 people, involved in the incident, are in custody. Every time I hear about one of these confrontations I think about how happy I am that I don't have to face those night time walks home from work anymore.
THE HEAT GOES ON
I see they had another record high in Austin (Texas) yesterday at 106.
Willard says they're talking about rolling blackouts because of the Houston heat. He's keeping his fingers crossed because, without air conditioning, it doesn't take very long before he starts to melt.
We are looking at cooler weather around here. After a high of 90 yesterday we'll be closer to 85 today.

A LITTLE BIT OF TUT
According to the DNA GENEALOGY CENTRE, in Zurich, around 60% of all French men belong to the same genetic group as King Tut. I always thought I could see a touch of Tut in Bruno!

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY STARTS MONDAY
South Dakota authorities are reminding cyclists and other motorists to watch out for each other. Every year the event is saddened by accidents and deaths. Let's hope this year will be an accident free year. For the latest on the event, check out this site: STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY
By the way, this is the 71st edition of the Rally which means the Rally and I are the same age. The rally, however, is holding up a lot better than I am.
A GOLF MONTH QUOTE FROM JACK BENNY
"Give me the fresh air, a beautiful partner, and a nice round of golf... and you can keep the fresh air and the round of golf."
By the way, have you ever noticed what golf spells backwards?

WE'VE GOT COOLER WEATHER AHEAD BUT NOT SO IN AUSTIN
Austin is under a heat advisory and they've initiated emergency plans until Friday night at 10 P.M. It was 103 in Austin at 4:00, this afternoon, and highs will range from 104 to 106, every day, for the rest of the week.
I wonder how much longer Donnie and Linda can hold out?

DRYIN' UP AND TURNIN' BLOOD RED
That's what's happening to a lake in San Angelo State Park in West Texas. Some folks thought it was a sign that the end of the world was upon us. No need to worry about that but the fact that the lake is almost dried up, because of the drought, is cause for concern. The little water that is left has turned blood red because of the Chromatiaceae ( dare you to say that real fast after a beer or two) bacteria that has infested the lake and thrives on oxygen deprived water.
WHAT DOES THE ALMANAC SAY?
I was just looking at the Farmers Almanac weather forecast and they say it will stay pretty warm all through August and we can expect a pretty mild September as well. That's just fine with me.
EMILY IS BOUND FOR FLORIDA
Tropical Storm Emily won't do Texas any good but it could ruin the weekend in Florida. We'll just have to keep an eye on her to see what she decides to do.
A FAIR TREAT
The New York State Fair opens August 25th with a "mouth-watering food delight". It's a 1500 calorie quarter pound hamburger with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion served on a glazed doughnut.
If that doesn't make you puke you can attend the Wisconsin State Fair, which opens Thursday in Milwaukee, and enjoy chocolate covered bacon on a stick.
Then head for the Texas State Fair, opening in Dallas on September 30, and wash it all down with some fried beer!
If you don't know what fried beer is, you just haven't spent enough time in Texas. They squirt the beer into a pocket that's carved out of a pretzel-like dough. You throw the dough in 375 degree oil for 20 seconds. Watch it closely. No more than 20 seconds or you lose the alcohol which, of course, totally spoils the delicacy and you have to start all over again.
DEADWOOD: 135 YEARS AGO TODAY
Wild Bill Hickock was playing poker at the #10 Saloon in Deadwood, on August 2, 1876, when Jack McCall walked through the front door and shot him in the back of the head. After that there wasn't much excitement in town until I blew in 83 years later.
I also noticed, on the calendar, that Peter O'Toole and Angela have the same birthday. He's 79 today. That surprised me. I thought he was older than that.
DAMN CAT!
He poked me awake at 2 A.M. this morning. That's too early, even for me, and I was sleeping so good. I spent a half hour trying to ignore, threaten and push him off but, when he makes up his mind, he'll never give up poking until he gets what he wants.
He had a hearty breakfast and by 3 A.M. he was curled up and sound asleep again. Meanwhile, here I sit, wide awake, with no chance I'll get any more ZZZZ's.
MISSING
The search will continue, this morning, for a six year old La Crosse boy who was last seen around 3 P.M. yesterday afternoon while he was swimming at the north end of Pettibone Park.
The last time I was at the park I couldn't help but notice how fast the river was flowing and how high the water was. I was thinking that I wouldn't have a chance if I fell in there. It is really a treacherous part of the river as it flows past the city.

HEAT AND STORMS IN SOUTH DAKOTA
Extreme heat and storms were reported across South Dakota this afternoon. In the west a huge storm brought large hail, heavy rains and a wind gust of 79 MPH at Faith.
In the east, late this afternoon, Sioux Falls reported 109 degrees, it was 112 in Mitchell and 118 in Aberdeen. We're not talking heat index here. We're talking real heat.

ROGER IS WORKING UP A SWEAT
sHe was in the basement, all morning, building a big birdcage. They've been up in the front porch but the dogs can't leave them alone so it's time to move them to a safer location.
Of course, he picked a good hot day to do this and he says the A/C in the basement is on its last legs. I can relate to the "last legs" part.
SPEAKING OF HEAT...
I was reading, today, that this past June was the hottest June ever recorded in Galveston and Houston. And Austin went 10 days in a row with temperatures at 100 or more. The longest June stretch of 100+ ever.

AUGUST HEAT IS UPON US
FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE:
Steamy...Storms Possible Next Few Days
Dangerous heat returns along with a chance for strong to severe thunderstorms through Tuesday.
The hot and humid conditions will persist across much of the region through Tuesday. Afternoon/early evening heat indices of 100 to 105 degrees are expected for southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and portions of western Wisconsin. Heat Advisories are in effect for this afternoon and early evening in these areas to account for the heat related threats.
All this heat and humidity will prime the atmosphere for showers and thunderstorms. A thunderstorm complex is expected to develop over northern Minnesota tonight, dropping southeast across northern Wisconsin on Tuesday. Meanwhile, a cold front associated with this activity will slide across the region Tuesday afternoon. This front will serve as an additional focus for thunderstorm development. All of the storms over the next few days will have the potential to become strong to severe with damaging winds, large hail, heavy rains and flash flooding the main threats. Currently, Tuesday looks to have the greater severe risk for the local area.

HOW MUCH DOES IT HURT?
How much it hurts depends on how much you THINK it hurts.
In a study conducted at the University of Oxford, researchers applied heat pain to the legs of volunteers. When they were given a pill and told it would DECREASE their pain the volunteers had a 41% reduction in pain. But, when they were given another pill and told it would have no effect on their pain the pain level shot right back up.
Life ain't what it is. Life is what you BELIEVE it is.

A solution to our problems
Midwestern oil tycoon Warren Buffett presented his quick
and easy solution to America ’s debt problem on CNBC:
“I could end the deficit in five minutes. You just pass
a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more
than three percent of GDP all sitting members of congress
are ineligible for reelection."
But, of course, that won't work because we delight in watching these people in congress dig our graves and then VOTE THEM BACK INTO OFFICE THE NEXT TIME THEY RUN SO THAT THEY CAN DIG THE HOLE DEEPER.
"WE" can't pass a law. The president can't pass a law. The supreme court can't pass a law. Only the congress can pass a law. There are NO "checks and balances" on congress except the American people.
So, the bottom line is; what "WE" have is EXACTLY what "WE" deserve.

WOODY ALLEN SAID IT BEST
"I don't want to live on in the hearts of my countrymen. I want to live on in my apartment."
FROM WINDY CITY TO WET AND WINDY CITY
Since January 1, Chicago has received nearly 34" of rain.
FROM DONNIE:
Your bits on air fares reminded me that on one trip home many years ago, the fare from South America to Chicago was the same as the fare from Chicago to La Crosse.
AFTER THE FIRE
I went back to the scene of yesterdays downtown fire on Jay Street and managed to get a couple of shots without destroying them. The building that formerly housed an optical company, where I bought my last pair of glasses, by the way, was still standing when I was down there yesterday. This morning it's just a pile of junk.
IN CASE YOU MISSED THE STORY:
As of last Wednesday the U.S. Government had an operating cash balance of $73.8 billion. On that same day Apple had an operating cash balance of $76.2 billion. And, Apple makes more than it spends.
So, here's my suggestion. The corporations are already running the government anyway so let's just close down congress, fire ALL politicians and political parties, throw their pensions and health care in the toilet and move Apple headquarters into the White House.
I have no problem, at all, with living in the United States of Apple.

DOWNTOWN FIRE
The downtown fire, yesterday, that I got (and then deleted) some great pictures of destroyed six apartments, a warehouse and the building that housed Optical Fashions before they moved out of the downtown area. No one was hurt but several cats are missing. It's not, yet, known what caused the fire.
I sure was upset when I deleted those pictures by mistake, but, leave me in the room with a computer and I'll destroy it in 5 minutes flat. I've totally given up in believing that I'll eventually master it.

REMEMBER D.B. COOPER?
It was 40 years ago that he made "skyjacking" a household word when he handed the flight attendant (then known as a stewardess) a note and said he had a bomb in his brief case and would use it if he had to. Then, putting on a parachute, he jumped from the NORTHWEST ORIENT jet.
The year was 1971 and what caught my eye, in the article, was the price he paid for his ticket. He purchased it, for a flight from Portland to Seattle, at the NORTHWEST ticket counter and guess what it cost him....$20.00 for the one way ticket!!!! Can you believe that?? $20.00 for an airline ticket?? Nowadays, you can't even BOARD a plane for $20.00, much less fly in it.
