NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAYS
TREACHEROUS
DRIVING CONDITIONS
TOMORROW MORNING
AROUND LA CROSSE

WEATHER

Sounds like a slippery night ahead.  Freezing rain and sleet will make for icy roads late tonight and into tomorrow morning.  The sleet will turn to rain tomorrow afternoon and then to snow tomorrow night.  We'll get another 1 to 2 inches on top of what we already have on the ground.

With that in mind, I went out this morning and picked up a few additional supplies.  I have no intention of even sticking my nose out the door tomorrow.

WINTER WEATHER

Duane is getting ready for the big winter storm moving through South Dakota today.

"Snow comes this afternoon with wind and four to six inches of snow in the Rapid City area.  The higher hills areas will get a foot of new snow."

NATURE

Carl sent this video of the largest glacier calving event ever recorded.

MEMORY

Here's an INTERESTING ARTICLE ON LONG TERM MEMORY that says the real test of learning is not forgetting.

I read the article although I don't know why.  My long term memory burned out years ago and my short term memory isn't all that accurate either.  The funniest thing anyone ever said to me was "hold that thought".

TV

Isn't ANDREW ZIMMERN the guy who's from La Crosse who Donnie ran into at the clinic?  I think so.

He's the guy who hosts Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel.  The shows new season begins tomorrow night and Andrew is going to eat snake heads.  You won't want to miss that.  I will but you won't.  I figure that should send him back to the clinic.

If you'd like to find out more about the show, read this article in the WASHINGTON POST

MORE NASTY WEATHER

One more nice day, around here, before the next nasty weather system moves in tomorrow with FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET AND WIND.  The weather service says our chance for having this miserable day is 100% so you know where I'll be tomorrow.

Of course, that's nothing compared to the East Coast storm.  I see 34 inches of snowfall in Hamden, Connecticut.  New York City has picked up 8 inches.

REMEMBERING THE MUSIC

Some of the happiest days of my life were back in the "Disco Days" and the Queen of disco, hands down, was the fabulous DONNA SUMMER.

She's still going strong with a #1 song she had on the Billboard Dance Chart a few years ago.  TO PARIS WITH LOVE is a winner!

BETTER WEATHER

FINALLY!  A break from the lousy weather.  I'm going to make a run to Festival before our next round of ice and snow arrives.

Today and tomorrow we'll see the sun with a high close to 30 today and 35 tomorrow.  It's been a long time since we've seen a day above freezing.

We're going to have to enjoy it while we can because, come Sunday, it's back to Freezing rain and sleet with a little snow thrown in Sunday night into Monday.

GARY MULE DEER

Donnie sent me a bio of Gary Mule Deer and wanted to know if I had ever heard of him.

Of course, I've heard of him.  He was born in Deadwood and lives in Spearfish and he's a really, really funny man.  If you go to You Tube you'll find a ton of videos of Gary doing his routines.

This video is from the David Letterman Show and I share it because he tells a story that goes along with a story I related on this blog a while back about the days when I lived in Deadwood when gambling and prositution were both illegal but wide open and big business in our wild little town that had a long history of hard living and wild, wild women.

I remember, well, the days he's talking about.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY BOY

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ASHTON KUTCHER.  He turns 35 today.

Did you know that Ashton was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and has a fraternal twin who had a heart transplant as a young child and also has cerebral palsy.

NASTY WEATHER

Temperatures were sure a lot warmer this morning.  We were below zero yesterday morning and it was 31 above zero at 3:00 A.M. today.

Actually that's not so good because we're in for another lousy day with morning fog and freezing rain and drizzle mixed with snow.  Of course, that will result in hazardous driving (and walking) conditions.

Will it ever get better?  Well, yes and no.  Tomorrow and Saturday will see a partly sunny sky but it's back to sleet, rain and snow Saturday night through Sunday night.

I'M NOW SERIOUSLY SICK OF WINTER

NO SATURDAY MAIL

Lynne and I sure agree on the latest post office news.  Lynne said, "We don't mind the NO MAIL on Saturdays.  We do just about everything on line so very little mail comes here.  With email, most of our communication is that way or by cell phone.  We still get too much junk mail that goes into the waste basket."

Amen, Lynne.  Same here.  The only thing I get is bills, junk and an occasional envelope of newspaper clippings from Donnie...all of which can wait until our Monday afternoon delivery.  I never pick up the Saturday mail until Monday morning anyway.

A NEW ONE ON MY "TO READ LIST"

LITTLE RICHARD: BORN ENTERTAINER

CARL CAME UP WITH THIS ONE.

What a talent! Little Richard at 4 years old Makes you wonder why we spent so much time playing in a sandbox.

For those of you that are old enough to remember him (Yes! I mean you).......here is Little Richard when he was about 4 years old!!! You have to see this! Watch how he uses his fists and elbows and doesn't even look at the keys when he sings!

This is amazing to see. It's Richard Wayne Penniman (aka Little Richard) about fifteen years before "Tutti Frutti, Oh, Rudy....A-whop bop-a-lu bop a-whop bam boom." This is some very rare footage of "Little Richard" as a child, when he was just starting out in the music biz' ...From a movie with Van Johnson...

SCIENCE/POLITICS

Scientists are saying that Neanderthals died out earlier than previously thought.  I don't believe it.  There are still plenty of them sitting in Congress.

WEATHER

While I complain about the snow, ice and cold, Donnie complains, "The forecast was a 70% chance of rain today.  As usual, undone by mostly sunny skies and hot, dry air.  Weathermen here are pathetic fools."

ATTENTION GAMBLING FANS

Watch for a new casino coming to South Dakota.  This one will be on I-90 near Chamberlain.  The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe plans to build this $34 million complex which will, eventually include the casino, a hotel, an events center and water park.  Sounds like a winner to me!

THE LATEST FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, ALREADY!

LIGHT SNOW WILL OVERSPREAD THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE TONIGHT.

FREEZING RAIN MAY MIX IN WITH THE SNOW LATE TONIGHT AND COULD PRODUCE A GLAZE OF ICE ON ROADS AND SIDEWALKS.

THE LIGHT SNOW WILL TRANSITION TO FREEZING DRIZZLE EARLY THURSDAY. THIS COULD PUT A GLAZE OF ICE ON AREA ROADS LEADING TO SLIPPERY CONDITIONS FOR THE THURSDAY MORNING COMMUTE.

DIET SODA AND BOOZE

For those of you who still drink huge amounts of booze (that used to be everyone I knew) science has a new warning for you.  The booze is fine but STAY AWAY FROM THE DIET SODA!

A new study finds that people who drank vodka with diet soda had breath alcohol concentrations that were 18% higher than folks who drank their vodka with regular soda.  The diet soda drinkers also had much slower reaction times than the regular soda and vodka drinkers.

Well, that's one thing I did right.  I never could stand the taste of those diet sodas.

By the way, if this study is correct, I'm thinking that it's not the booze that gets you into trouble.  It's the mix, baby.  I wish I had known that 50 years ago.  I would have skipped the mix altogether.

WINTER WOES

I have always hated February and, this year I hate it more than ever.  October through January has been such an easy winter.  Along comes February and it's one lousy day after the next.

I've lost count of how many days, in a row, we've had snow and ice and bitter cold temperatures.  And, there's more to come.

The forecast, for today, says more SNOW AFTER 5 PM MIXED WITH FREEZING RAIN.

Tomorrow it's freezing drizzle mixed with snow.

Friday and Saturday we'll get a break with some sunshine but it's right back to snow and rain on Sunday.

22 more days left of this miserable month.  I don't know if I can stand it.

KIDNEY DISEASE

What symptoms should you look for if your kidneys are failing.  The bad news is that there aren't any.  This short video explains.

SNOW

Light snow has been falling, around La Crosse, all morning.  It hasn't amounted to much.  Less than an inch in most places.

More snow, however, is forecast for tomorrow afternoon into Thursday and another storm will affect our area Sunday and Monday but it's too early to make a guess about what kind of precipitation we'll get.

A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS

CANADA IS GETTING RID OF THEIR PENNY.  The MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE is running a poll asking if we should do the same in the U.S.  The majority of the folks participating in the poll say YES

That reminds me of the "Penny Loafer".  Remember those?  The penny loafer was introduced by the G. H. Bass Shoe Company but it wasn't called a loafer.  It was called a WEEJUN and guess why they called it that.  Every Viking should know this.

The early "loafer" was called a Weejun because it was fashioned after the slip on shoes worn by Norwegian farmers!  Now, I'll bet that's a bit of Norwegian history you didn't know!

In the 40's and 50's it wasn't a penny that us kids slipped into the band that ran across the front of the shoe.  It was a dime.  And, why a dime??

Remember, this was before the cell phone but kids were still addicted to talking on the phone and, in those days, the pay telephone was our cell phone and the price of a call was 10 cents.  That's where the dime in the shoe came in handy!

Now, as Paul Harvey used to say, you know the rest of the story.

SNOW

If you want to see snow the place to go is Moscow.  They've had their snowiest winter in 100 years.  So far, OVER 85 INCHES!!  Compared to that, I guess you could say, we've had a puny winter!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN

The University of Wisconsin opened its doors, for the first time, on February 5, 1849.  There were 20 students in attendance that first day.
Classes offered included English grammar, Arithmetic, ancient and modern geography, algebra, Caesar's Commentaries, Select orations of Cicero, penmanship, reading, composition and declamation.

TUITION WAS $20 PER STUDENT FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR!

Aaahhhh!  For the good old days!

BE NICE TO YOUR WEATHERMAN/WOMAN TODAY

DAYLIGHT

The length of our day, today, will be 10 hours and 4 minutes.  Tomorrow: 2 minutes and 37 seconds longer.  Slow, but sure, spring is getting closer.

In the meantime, the weather man says there's a 100% chance for snow this morning.

TRAVEL TO EUROPE

Want to go to Europe this summer?  Cheapest cities, right now, are Bucharest, Sofia and Krakow.  Most expensive cities are Oslo, Zurich and Venice.

Turns out the cities you wanted to go to are the most expensive, right?  You can't win!

On the other hand, all is not lost.  You can still find some great deals in Holmen.

Just read an item on AP that I found interesting.

SNOWFALL

One to three inches of new snow on the ground in the La Crosse area this morning.  The National Weather Service says law enforcement has received reports of some cars sliding off the roads due to the slippery conditions.

SUPER BOWL APATHY

I found it interesting to note that the reader poll on the LA CROSSE TRIBUNE website, this morning, asked the question; "How much of the Super Bowl did you watch?"  By a big majority, the readers answered, "None of it".  I guess, around here, without the PACKERS on the field, the big Bowl game isn't the big deal you might think it is.

SAVE THE RAINFOREST

The Amazon Rain forest is a major player in the worlds climate.  If we destroy it we have destroyed the lives of our children and grandchildren and doomed the planet.

Unfortunately, oil company greed could care less about your children and grandchildren, or the planet.  They want to turn four million hectares of the rain forest into one big oil field in Ecuador.  Learn more and please sign this petition to the President of Ecuador to stop this outrage.

Willard says it will be in the 70's in Houston today and the sun is coming our way.  I think he's right.  We'll have 10 hours of daylight today and 10 hours and 2 minutes of daylight tomorrow.

THIS WEATHER THING IS JUST NOT FUNNY ANYMORE

SO, HERE COMES THE NEXT ROUND OF MISERABLE WEATHER

The National Weather Service has issued another winter weather advisory from 6PM this evening until 8 tomorrow morning.

Snow will move in early this evening and will bring us 2 to 5 inches by morning.

Those people who have to go to work in the morning (are there still people who go to work?) can expect slippery roads.

I've been "hunkered down" (God, I hate that phrase) for nearly a week trying to avoid the weather but I'm running seriously low on supplies.

Snow or no snow, cold or no cold, hell or high water, I'm going to have to face the elements tomorrow.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHELLEY BERMAN!

Remember Shelley Berman?  He's celebrating his 87th birthday today so you kids won't remember but Shelley was one of the great comedians from the mid-50's, through the 60's and beyond.

In a 2012 interview Berman accused Bob Newhart of stealing his telephone routine.  I don't know if that's true but this is a routine, I remember well, that Berman did in the pre-Newhart days.

(But go out and buy a copy anyway and keep a great newspaper going)

THE MARSH

There's an excellent article in the LA CROSSE TRIBUNE about the La Crosse River Marsh, this morning.

You know what?  If there is a God who created the world, don't you think that God might have put that marsh there for a reason?  We arrogant humans have done quite enough "improving" on what the creator created and we've made a hideous mess of it.  Let's learn to live with creation rather than the bulldozer.
