BURT REYNOLDS
GET WELL SOON

I'VE HAD A FEW DAYS LIKE THIS

THIS TAKES ME BACK TO THE '70'S

I ran across this song by accident and it took me back to my Sioux Falls days.  I loved this video so much I had to share it.

Of a the many bars I've been in over the years (and there have been many, many, many) I'm sorry I missed this one.  It looks like my kind of place where you could have a seriously fun afternoon!

I KNEW I SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN SOUTH DAKOTA!

What's going on here?  Rapid City will have highs near 50 both today and tomorrow.
A WEEK FROM TODAY IS GROUND HOG DAY!
(Can spring be far behind?)

PAUL NEWMAN WAS BORN ON THIS DATE IN 1925 IN CLEVELAND, OHIO

THINK YOU'RE A MATH WHIZ?

Spend your weekend figuring this one out.

WIDE SPREAD WINTER

Apparently, tomorrows nasty winter weather is going to cover a large area.  WBBM in Chicago says the WINTER STORM WATCH covers the entire Chicago area for tomorrow.  The biggest concern is a lot of ice for the windy city.

MEN IN HIGH HEELS

Here's a totally new one on me.  Did you know that, at one time, it was the MEN who wore high heel shoes!  And, do you know why?  It all started with HORSES!!!

This is a really fascinating article from the BBC NEWS MAGAZINE

EVERY DAY IS A HOLIDAY

Today is Bald Eagle Appreciation day.

A "BUNDLE UP" WEEKEND

Guess I'd better get out and do what I have to do today because tomorrow is going to be another "stay in day".

It's not going to be all that nice today with wind chills as low as 7 below but tomorrow is going to be a winter nightmare.

They're forecasting snow, sleet and freezing rain for Sunday and Sunday night.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ADVISORY
A WINTRY MIX OF PRECIPITATION LOOKS TO OVERSPREAD THE AREA SUNDAY MORNING.BECOME MODERATE TO HEAVY SUN AFTERNOON AND THEN TAPER OFF SUN EVENING.

INITIALLY THE PRECIPITATION WILL MAINLY BE A MIX OF SLEET AND SNOW OR ALL SNOW. AS WARMER AIR PUSHES IN, ESPECIALLY SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 90, THE PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO MIX WITH OR CHANGE TO ALL SLEET THEN FREEZING RAIN.

NORTH OF INTERSTATE 90 THE AIRMASS LOOKS TO REMAIN COLD ENOUGH FOR SNOW OR THE SLEET AND SNOW MIX TO CONTINUE THROUGH SUN AFTERNOON.

BY LATER SUN EVENING.THE PRECIPITATION SHOULD END AS A PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN OR FREEZING DRIZZLE ACROSS THE ENTIRE AREA.

SIX OR MORE INCHES OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE NO. OF INTERSTATE 90. A COMBINATION OF UP TO 3 INCHES OF SNOW.A HALF INCH OF SLEET OR A QUARTER INCH OF FREEZING RAIN ARE POSSIBLE ALONG AND SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 90.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT EXACTLY WHAT TYPE OF PRECIPITATION FALLS AT ANY ONE LOCATION AND FOR HOW LONG IS FAR FROM CERTAIN AT THIS POINT. SMALL CHANGES IN THE STORM TRACK OR STRENGTH WILL HAVE BIG IMPACTS ON PRECIPITATION TYPES AND AMOUNTS WITH THIS WINTER STORM.

Making plans.....

OK

I'M NOW OFFICIAL FED UP WITH WINTER.

JUST LIKE ALL THE REST

I just read that SUBWAY says it's "sorry" it came up an inch short on their "foot longs".  C'mon Subway.  You're just doing what all the other big guys are doing.  Making the product smaller and the price higher.  That's the American Way.

MY FAVORITE QUOTE OF THE DAY

"It's no wonder truth is stranger than fiction.  Fiction has to make sense."
MARK TWAIN

YOU GOTTA SEE THIS

Did you see the Yahoo! article about the Mexican family that literally LIVES UNDER A ROCK?  This is amazing.  I love it.  CHECK IT OUT HERE

THUNDER WOULD HAVE LOVED IT

A CATS DREAM HOME

BAD SLEEPING HABITS

I didn't get to bed until 11 and I still woke up at 3:00 A.M.  I've been getting up at 3:00 A. M. since I was 19 years old.  I guess it's to late to change my ways.

TODAY'S WEATHER

Windy, flurries and cold.  We seem to be getting all of our winter in the same week.

LA CROSSE ON NATIONAL TV

A Documentary/Drama featuring the Eric Koula murder case will air tonight on the Discovery Channel.  This is the case of the man who was found guilty of killing both of his parents.

ENOUGH SHAKESPEARE FOR A WHILE

The good news is that I can, actually, stay up until 10 o'clock at night if I put my mind to it.

The bad news is that Macbeth was, probably, not the best choice to open the new theater.  We have higher hopes for "A Chorus Line" when it takes the stage.

Back to the good news, The acoustics and the lighting, at the new theater, is excellent and there's not a bad seat in the house.

As we left the theater Rita said, "If this was the old days I'd suggest we stop and have a beer but this isn't the old days, is it?"

"No it isn't", I sadly replied.  The old days are dead and gone."

I SAW IT IN THE PAPER

WELL RESTED

I'm not much of a napper but I laid down this afternoon and actually slept for about an hour.  With this lousy weather, that never seems to end, it's pretty easy to fall asleep.

THE APPLE FALLS

Everybody's talking about Apple's plunge in the stock market.  And, of course, everybody knows what Apple needs to do the fix it.

I was most impressed by Mitch Joel's comment, "I feel sick that we live in a world where revenue of $54.5 billion in a quarter is a disappointment."

HANG ON FOR A WARM-UP

DEEP FREEZE THROUGH SUNDAY.  WE COULD WARM UP TO 34  ON MONDAY.

LEARN A NEW WORD EVERY DAY

Todays word is XANTHIPPE .  It's pronounced: zan-THIP-ee.

Definition: "A nagging, ill-tempered woman."

WARNING: Be very careful where and when you use this word.  Using it in the wrong place at the wrong time could be hazardous to your health.

I HATE IT WHEN THE SOUTHERN BRANCH OF THE FAMILY RUBS IT IN

I got a 4 word email from Donnie this morning:

"Could hit 80 today."

I could just cry.

JIM CARREY'S HOME IS FOR SALE

$14 million is a little steep but I like Malibu, the ocean and the beach.  The house might be a little "cramped" but I could live with it.  CHECK OUT THE PICTURES HERE

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NEIL DIAMOND! 72 TODAY!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm."
Winston Churchill

That's where I screwed up!  I lost that enthusiasm thing.

ENOUGH WITH THE COLD NOW IT'S SNOW TIME

The weatherman says snow will develop after midnight and quickly pile 1 to 3 inches on us.  Another round of snow is expected to move in on Sunday.Logo Design by FlamingText.com

MACBETH DAY

I've got to take a nap, this afternoon, to get ready for the big night at the theater.

It's opening night for the new community theater in La Crosse.  I picked up the tickets yesterday so Rita and I will mingling with the cultured folks tonight.

"Out, out, brief candle!  Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more.  It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury.  Signifying nothing."

THOSE NORWEGIANS GOT CLASS!

Donnie said, "Check out the Oslo Opera House.  It looks like an iceberg in the water.  Apparently the architectural firm also had something to do with the restoration in New York's Times Square."

JOHNNY ASKS THE HARD QUESTIONS

Johnny's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals.

One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. 'Yes,' said the policeman. 'The detectives want very badly to capture him.' Johnny asked, "Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture ? "

WOW! IT WORKS!

Tomorrow is BEER CAN DAY to celebrate the invention of the beer can.  I found a site that had some information on the holiday.  As I was looking at it, I got a pop-up from MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS telling me there were some security threats attached to the site but Microsoft was cleaning it up and it required no action from me.

I did take the action of getting off the site, FAST!  So it's good to know it's working and they're on the job!  I'm glad I downloaded the service.

THE NEW AMERICAN PIE

TALL IN THE SADDLE

Randolph Scott was born on this date in 1898.  His acting abilities brought him a lot of great roles, especially the westerns, and he retired in 1962, after his performance in "The High Country" with an estimated fortune of $100 million dollars.  Imagine what that would be worth today!

SNOW!

I ventured out this morning.  Temperatures are in the teens but there's no wind so it really isn't all that bad.  The ground is white with the little dab of snow we got this morning.

Chances look good for another round of snow tomorrow night into Friday.  That could give us up to 2 inches of snow on the ground.

NOTHING LIKE A GOOD MEAL

THE LATEST NEWS FROM RITA

#1
WHERE TO FIND SAFETY PINS: "Hancock Fabric, Hobby Lobby or any sewing center".

#2
"I tried to fix our DVD player and the TV quit.  Tried to fix that and couldn't.

I called their help desk.  The guy told me to plug something in and then he ran with it from there.  He said we'd have to have a repairman for $60.00.  He said the repairman would arrive between 11 and 2 tomorrow.

The repairman called.  Said he'd be here at 3 o'clock today.

The repairman said the telephone agent told me to plug in the wrong thing.  He thinks the VCR actually stopped the TV from working.  He fixed it and said there would be no charge.  They only charge when they have to move boxes, etc.  Everything working fine.

I sat down to crochet.  Got a call from CenturyLink telling me how to reboot the internet.

If CenturyLink asks me about their service, the repairman was perfect.  Everyone on the phone was more confused than I was."

STILL TOO COLD BUT BETTER THAN YESTERDAY

It was 9 above with a calm wind when I got up.  A calm wind means no wind chill.  I like that part.  The forecast says we could get up to 17 this afternoon.  After what we've had the last few days, 17 would feel like Florida.

JUST A THOUGHT

POLITICAL QUOTE OF THE DAY

A politician is a fellow who will lay down your life for his country.
Tex Guinan

Back in the old days when a King or even the Pope wanted to go to war it was the king or pope who actually lead his troops into battle.

That sounds like a great idea.  For our next war, lets put the president and every member of congress on the front lines.

Oh, wait!  That won't work.  If we did that, there wouldn't be another war.

Keep up to date with "PHARMACY CHOICE AND ACCESS.COM

What ever happened to safety pins?

Doesn't anyone use them anymore?  I needed some a couple of months ago and looked everywhere for them.  None to be found until I saw some at Walgreen's.  I bought them but they were made of such thin wire, or whatever it is, that they were useless.

Today I got an email from Duane.  He's been looking for safety pins all over Rapid City and he can't find any there either!

I can't believe the world no longer has any need for safety pins.

If you see some....let me know!

Wind chill 12 below at 11 AM.

I made it as far as Co-op but wouldn't want to go any farther.  Just too cold for old folks.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Checking the tweets.

A guy on TWITTER says he loves Ebay.  He sold his homing pigeon 8 times last month!

Time marches on....

And the time dimension demands that nothing stays the same.

There was a time when every kid "couldn't live" without an Atari in their room.  That was so yesterday....This is "now" and Atari has filed for bankruptcy.

Wonder what Yahoo! is up to now?

I got a note from Yahoo! when I checked my email account.  They tell me they're doing some work on their email service that will make it bigger and better than ever.  Can't wait to see what surprises they have in store.

"SORRY FOR THE DELAY, FOLKS"!

An interesting item on AccuWeather this morning.

Over the past 30 years, Minneapolis has averaged 22 1/2 days, a year, with temperatures below zero.  So far, this season, there have been 4.
  • I love neat posters.

I ran across a website of photographs by Kyle Cassidy and the very first photo is a stunning photo of a poster for Macbeth.  With the opening of the play at the new Community Theater this week I wanted to share it with you.

The Hollywood Theater has a new website.

Keep up with the latest news on the HOLLYWOOD THEATER.  Check out their NEW WEBSITE HERE

I was surprised to see that they'd like to open in February but I can't believe that would be possible after looking at the pictures of the destruction to the inside of the building.  In any event, I can't wait until they officially announce their Grand Opening date.

With our new Community Theater performing arts center, the New Cavalier Theater and Lounge and the New Hollywood Theater plus the La Crosse Center, downtown La Crosse will, again, be our entertainment center and that's where it belongs.

Hey! The new STAR TREK movie looks like it might be good!

An eye witness account from New York City on a cold day in January.

Some years ago: A little boy, about 10-years-old, was standing before a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering With cold.
A lady approached the young boy and said, 'My, but you're in such deep thought staring in that window!'

'I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,' was the boy's reply.

The lady took him by the hand, went into the store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her.

She took the little fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with the towel.

By this time, the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she purchased him a pair of shoes.
She tied up the remaining pairs of socks and gave them to him.. She patted him on the head and said, 'No doubt, you will be more comfortable now..'

As she turned to go, the astonished kid caught her by the hand, and looking up into her face, with tears in his eyes, asked her, 'Are you God's wife?"

The wind chill still 20 below when I got up.

I guess we're paying, big time, for the mild weather we've had this winter.

Our high today will still only be around 5 above.  But it looks a little better tomorrow with temperatures climbing to the mid-teens.

I'd rather have a foot of snow than this cold weather.  At least, the snow brings us some moisture.  The cold is good for nothing, except misery.

By the way, the temperature in NOME, ALASKA AT 3 A.M. WAS 22 ABOVE ZERO.

I'd rather be home in Nome this morning.

I wonder if Wisconsin is ready for this?

Did you know that there still people, in this world, that use wallpaper in their homes?  But, this isn't that "little blue flowers crap" from years ago.

Today's wallpaper is a whole different thing.  Like wallpaper that will make your room look like you have concrete walls.  Not kidding.  And, wouldn't you know....the designer is a DutchmanTake a look here.

An Encore coming up on PBS.

"As goes Janesville" is scheduled to air again on PBS on February 4.  It's a look at the future of the middle class in America.  Here's a preview.

Hey! Times are tough. A buck is a buck.

A couple of strippers at the Silk Exotic Club in Juneau got in a knock down cat fight after one of the dancers grabbed a dollar bill as a customer was trying to give it to another dancer.  Punching, pulling hair, the whole bit.  The cops had to pull them apart.

Oh!  How I miss those bar hopping days!

    I had to ask!

Rita gave me a ride over to Walgreen's to pick up some pills.  On the way back she said, "I've had a song running trough my head all morning".

I, of course, had to ask, "What Song".

She started singing "Love Potion #9".  Now, needless to say, I have it running through my head.

I'm going to pass it on.

Donnie is into his second childhood. He's got himself a spiffy choo choo.

    Love the boxcar!

A touch of snow in parts of the Coulee Region this morning.

It was a very narrow band of snow, 2 to 3 miles wide, that extended from Wabasha through Trempealeau, Holmen, Middle Ridge and Cashton.

Donnie found it and it's a fact!!

The only foreign language Bible ever used to swear in a U.S. President was FDR's old family Bible written in DUTCH !

    I love this.

Donnie sent a brief bio of Johnny Stanley. Do you remember Johnny Stanley?

Johnny Stanley was born in Milwaukee and wrote a comedy routine called, "It's in the book".  In 1952 he recorded the routine and, if he had done that today, we would say it went viral.  But in 1952 we called it a million seller.  In fact a TWO MILLION SELLER.  That's right.  "It's in the book" sold 2 million records.

Stanley toured with Horace Height's orchestra.  The show played at the Corn Palace in Mitchell and we went to see it with Ed and Marion Pfaff.

Johnny came out and did his routine and I thought Ed and Dad were going to laugh themselves sick.  Ed didn't laugh a lot.  In fact, I think that's the only time I ever did see him laugh but Johnny Stanley, totally, broke him up.

I haven't heard, or seen, the routine in a long time but knowing that YOU TUBE has a video of, almost, everything I did a search and there it was!

    I'm counting!!

Baby, it's COLD out there this morning!

    5  A. M.: WIND CHILL 19 BELOW ZERO
The national weather service says wind chills will remain in the 20 to 35 below zero range all day, today, tonight and through tomorrow morning.

I guess that means there's no place like home for the cold snap!  Unfortunately, Rita and I do have to get out this morning.  Rita has a dentist appointment, I have to get pills and we have to pick up our tickets for "Macbeth", the first production at the new Community Theater Thursday night.

Speaking of the new theater, we've already decided there are two other shows we want to see this season.  "A Chorus Line" will be on stage in April and "Les Miserables" in May.

Kidney disease is highlighted in the La Crosse Tribune this morning.

Being a kidney disease patient, myself, I found the article interesting.  Especially since the gentleman featured in the article is very close to my age, although his disease is more advanced than mine.

Kidney disease strikes so many Americans that I hope you'll click here to read the article.

I'm one of the lucky ones.  My annual medical check-up caught the problem at an early enough stage so that I'm able to get treatment to prolong the failure of my own kidneys and, hopefully, add a few years to my life.  But regular medical checkups is the key.

The problem with kidney disease is that there are no obvious symptoms until the very advanced stages when it's too late to do much about it.  There is no cure for kidney disease but catching it early can add some time to your life.

So, the best advice I can give is regular checkups and watch what you eat!  Unfortunately, our American diet is the perfect diet for the destruction of your kidneys.

Look at the beautiful buck Donnie captured in the back yard.

    I HAVE A DREAM

    Sunday, January 20, 2013

WOW! The new Community Theater is a little bit of Broadway right here on the Mississippi!

The soaring three story lobby is a beautiful introduction to the theater and immediately obvious that this is a class act.

Above: Rita and Jessica standing in front of the wall of glass that looks out on the Mississippi River.

Carnival Cruise Lines has decided there's a limit to your fun and games.

They have a new deal where you pay for your drinks one time only rather than pay every time you order a drink.  The problem is, there's a 15 drink, per day, limit.

That would be fine with me NOW but in my wild and crazy days of youth I would not have called a 15 drink limit a "Carnival".  I would have called it a "warm-up".

Rita and Roger told me about this one.

Who knew Festus had a voice like this?  Ken Curtis sings.....

It may be cold now but it will be summer before we know it.

Get ready for the warm weather with spicy grilled shrimp.

Boy! This is a surprise to me!

According to USA TODAY, Beijing Capital International Airport will surpass ATLANTA'S HARTSFIELD-JACKSON AIRPORT to become the worlds busiest airport by the end of the year.  Over the next 10 years, one out of every five aircraft BOEING makes will be for China.

Did you see FORBES latest list of the happiest countries in the world?

The happiest of all is NORWAY but Forbes didn't have to take a poll to find that out.  It's obvious that the country with the most LUTEFISK is going to be the happiest country on earth.  And, ya, sure, you betcha.  Norway is it!

The land of the sturdy Vikings is followed by:
    2 Denmark
    3 Sweden
    4 Australia
    5 New Zealand
    6 Canada
    7 Finland
    8 The Netherlands
    9 Switzerland
    10 Ireland

I'd like to go back to the "good old days"

Ran across this photo this morning.  Mother and Grandpa.  Love it!
They say "the good old days" weren't really as "good" as you remember them.  That may be true but I know they were better than this!

Willard may be living in one of the biggest cities in the country but it sounds like he's on the Clampett's old place in the hills.

"There's been a baby possum on the patio the last two nights.  Buddy, of course, spotted it and wanted out to attack.  He was very upset when I said "no".

I didn't see the little varmit last night so I went out with Buddy.  He made a bee line for the corner of the patio behind the cedar tree and there was the possum.  I grabbed Buddy before he got bit and the possum excaped through a gap in the fence."

Too bad Grannie wasn't in the neighborhood.  She could have cooked up some possum stew.

Guess what Linda and Donnie have been doing?

    Hitting the flea markets.

To buy or not to buy.  That is the question!

This is a good day for soup.

I just fired up the crockpot.  Vegetable beef soup is on the menu for tonight.

I came across a Twitter tweet that, pretty much, sums up life in the USA these days.

"Love thy neighbor, but, apparently, only if you have a gun nearby, just in case."

I give you this, today, as a public service: How to stay warm in the cold weather.

The way I see it, you have two choices.  You can either buy and put on all the stuff this guy suggests.....or......you can buy a ticket and Fly to Florida.

I'm not going to be in a very good mood the next few days.

    A WIND CHILL ADVISORY
    IN EFFECT THROUGH
    NOON TUESDAY
    THREE DAYS OF
    ICE COLD HELL
Wind chill values will hover around 25 below zero through 9 AM this morning, slowly improving through the rest of the day.  Not, however, improving enough.

Wind chill values will then drop into the 20 to 35 below zero range late tonight and remain in this range through Tuesday morning.

DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY HOURS THERE ARE BETWEEN NOW AND TUESDAY MORNING?????

There will never be another "LAUGH IN".

ARTE JOHNSON is celebrating his 84th birthday today.

Open House at the new Community Theater today.

Rita, Jessica and I plan on going.  I'll try to get a couple of pictures to show you.  I've been watching the progress since they started building it.  Now I'm anxious to see the inside.

    This surprises me.....

The ground is bare of snow.  I haven't even taken my overshoes out of the closet this year.  Yet, Bill Graul at WKBT says we've had about the same amount of snow as we usually have.

The average snowfall through January 15, in La Crosse, is 19.8 inches and we've had 18.4 inches, so far, this winter.  I guess it doesn't seem like we've had as much because it's been warmer than usual so the snow has melted rather than staying on the ground all winter like is usually does.

That's just fine and dandy with me.

Oh, Come on. It isn't that cold!

Back in 1996, on February 2, the temperature fell to 55 degrees below zero at Couderay, Wisconsin, which is up in the Northwoods of the state.  That's the coldest temperature ever recorded in Wisconsin.
