Stay away from El Azizia, Libya. The hottest temperature ever recorded, on earth, was in El Azizia on September 13, 1922 when the temp hit 136 degrees. That gives "hot time in the old town tonight" a whole new meaning.
Starting a new blog that you may want to check out from time to time..or maybe not. It's up to you!

HELLO GREAT FALLS!
Just noticed we had a reader in Great Falls, Montana this morning. I know who that was! Carl and Kathy are in Great Falls visiting the kids.
Great day to be vacationing in Great Falls. With a sunny sky, they'll get up to 86 this afternoon.
DON'T FORGET TO SET YOUR CLOCKS TONIGHT
We have to add a second to the clock tonight so at 7:59:59 the Universal clock will turn over to 7:59:60 and then 8:00:00 (CDT). Then we're good to go for another four years.
ARE YOU READY FOR A COMPUTER BUILT INTO YOUR GLASSES???
As if you didn't have enough gadgits to distract you while you're walking and driving a pair of glasses will put the computer right before your eyes as soon as next year. READ ALL ABOUT THIS NEW GOOGLE PRODUCT
THREE MORE DAYS
I've almost gotten to the point where I'm counting the seconds until I can get rid of these awful bandages covering half of my face. I've gone from the pain I had the first night to the itching I have now. Do you know how miserable it is to have an itch that you can't scratch?
I, normally, sleep on my right side but the bandages are covering my right ear so I can't sleep on my right side, I can't get comfortable and It's almost impossible to get any real rest.
The problem with old age is that you, barely, get one thing fixed before something else breaks down.

I CAN'T FIND A TASTY CUCUMBER
One of my favorite summer treats is a cucumber salad but the cucumbers don't seem to have any taste this year. Is it the cucumbers or is it me?
FOUR DAYS TO GO
I'm almost counting the seconds until I can get rid of these awful bandages on my ear. Uncle Bob said the bandages are the worst part of this ordeal and he was right.
There's one other "worst part". The ear is now starting to itch a bit and, of course, I can't get through the bandages to scratch it.
The more into the "GOLDEN YEARS" I get, the less I like it.

OH! THIS IS JUST TOO GOOD TO PASS UP
Man charged with assult and battery with a container of McDonalds French Fries after throwing them at his daughter. READ IT HERE
Rita and I ate at McDonalds yesterday. I had one of their salads and it was delicious. Of course, except for the lettuce, everything else I shoved down my throat was stuff I'm not supposed to have. (Don't tell the doctors).

DONNIE IS READING THE CENSUS TODAY
According to the Census Bureau, the two fastest-growing urban areas in the country are New Orleans (renaissance!) and Austin. Just one Austin neighborhood, Round Rock, now has 100,000 people. The greater Austin metro area, 1.5 million.
A NOTE FROM LYNNE TODAY AND A NEW LOOK FOR THE GARAGE
"So agree with you about NBC. Why did they get rid of such a good person. It was very emotional for her and the others. She will still be doing great but terrible to let her go after so many years.
Already 98 at 11:30. We will hit 100 today.
We have put everything back in our garage after having EPOXY PROS come and do our garage floor. Daniel and Jon had it done and it is awsome so we decided to have it done. No more scraping and painting for me every year."
ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL KIDNEY FUND:
There are more than 72 million people in the USA who have high blood pressure. High blood pressure is the number 2 cause of kidney failure.
NBC DOES IT AGAIN
This two bit loser network has, again, treated another one of their high profile talents as though they were a plate of chopped liver.
The management at the peacock network needs to go to work for Rupert Murdock. They would fit in great with the rest of the trash over there.

PRETTY WELL RESTED
I slept, surprisingly, well last night. I usually sleep on my right side but can't do that, now, until I get the bandages off the ear. I had some pain during the night but it's better this morning.
I'm not sure I can last a week without a shower. It's, already, driving me crazy that I can't jump in under my new shower head.
RIP: DON GRADY
Don Grady has died of cancer at the age of 68. You might remember, if you're old enough. He played Robbie Douglas on "My Three Sons" which starred Fred MacMurry as a single dad. It was one of TV's longest running sit-coms.
WHAT'S THE PROPER WAY TO SHAKE HANDS?
In honor of National Handshake Day I give you ETIQUETTE INTERNATIONAL which will give you all the tips you need to give the perfect handshake.
Do people still shake hands? I don't know about anyplace else but around here, these days, you're lucky if you can get someone to even acknowledge you if you say hello in passing.
That's quite a change from my days of living on the Texas-Mexican border. There, you spend half your day shaking hands. If you run into someone three times in one day you shake their hand and greet them three times in one day. That may sound a bit extreme but I liked it better than the cold hard stare of disgust.

I KNEW THERE WAS A REASON I NEVER WANTED TO BE OLD
It's all just as miserable as I thought it would be.
These bandages have to stay on for a week. I won't be tempted to take them off earlier because they are SEWED onto my face!!!
I have to go back in a week and they'll take them off. In the meantime I can't take a shower and I can't shampoo my hair. If you think I look bad now, wait until you see me after a week without shower and shampoo.
The doctor cut a pretty big chunk out of my ear and then did a skin graft that will, hopefully, make me look reasonably normal again.
The best news was that they got all the cancer out. This, I learned, is very common condition for older people. But the good news was that for a person my age, he says my skin is in much better condition than most. I find that hard to believe after looking at this picture.

A LIFE OF PERPETUAL CONFUSION
I grabbed the wrong bottle, in the shower this morning, and washed my face with the shampoo. It really brought out the natural highlights of my wrinkles.

TODAYS THE BIG DAY!
Rita is taking me to the clinic, this morning, to have my ear fixed. Uncle Bob had this done and said the worst thing about it is all the bandages they put on after they're done.
Today's visit to the doctor, apparently, isn't causing me much apprehension. My blood pressure at 6:15 AM was 106/59. That's the blood pressure of a young kid and we all know I'm not one of those anymore.

AN OLD FRIEND COMES BACK TO SEE BOB AND LYNNE
Lynne said:
"What a surprise seeing a movement outside and there was our little fox pup. The last time I had taken a video was May 15 and we had another sighting about a week later. Neighbors saw a fox while we were in Georgia.
They surely are fun to watch and don't bother anyone. We need them around to take care of the chipmunks. Way too many."

THE HEAT WE'LL SEE TOMORROW IS IN SOUTH DAKOTA TODAY
Along and west of the James River the heat index will be as high as 110 today.
A PERFECTLY LOVELY DAY TODAY
We're expecting a sunny sky with a high near 80. What more could you ask for in a beautiful day?
Tomorrow is another story. Gusty winds and a heat index around 100 will make it a good day to stay inside with the a/c up full blast.
Besides the uncomfortable weather, tomorrow is the day they'll be cutting into my ear to get rid of the cancer. I'll come home with the side of my head all bandaged up and scare the hell out of Thunder. It's gonna be a wicked Wednesday!

THIS TAKES MY BREATH AWAY
Look at what Rita and Roger have done in the basement!
I'm guessing it was more Roger than Rita because I see a lot of heavy moving in these two photos.

THIS SHOULD BE A GOOD READ
Kinky Friedman and Willie Nelson writing a book together? I gotta watch for that one.
I'VE HAD A BUSY DAY
I've been making careful calculations to make sure I run out of strawberries and Redi-Whip at the same time. I don't want to end up with a serving of one without the other.
I've also been practicing squirting Redi-Whip directly onto my tongue I've made a few messes with that one but it's been worth it.
You had better believe it. This retirement stuff is really fun.
ROCHESTER SHOPPERS
Rita and Kathy went shopping in Rochester today. I'll bet the cash registers are jingleing.
HANG ON--IT WILL BE JANUARY, AGAIN, BEFORE YOU KNOW IT!
Summer Heat to Return Mid Week
After a brief cool down Monday and Tuesday, temperatures will soar mid-week to unseasonable readings.
High temperatures will likely reach the lower to mid 90s on Wednesday and Thursday. The potential exists for temperatures to be even warmer. There won't be much relief at night either, with lows expected to drop into the mid and upper 70s.
Although the atmosphere will be relatively dry, heat indices across Iowa and southern Wisconsin could reach the upper 90s to near 100 in the afternoon hours Wednesday and Thursday. Precautions should be taken if planning to be outdoors for periods of time. Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade.
Below you will find summer heat climatological, normal, and record information.

A GREAT WAY TO START THE DAY
I don't think I've ever seen strawberry shortcake listed on any of the "healthy breakfast food items" lists I've seen but I couldn't see any great harm in having a "berry good morning". Paul and Dorothy sent me home with a lot of strawberry shortcake and I thought it best to eat it while it's still fresh.
ANOTHER "OLD TIMER" CELEBRATES A BIRTHDAY
The loveable June Lockhart is celebrating her 87th birthday today. She earned her fame playing a mother, first on "LASSIE" and then on "Lost in Space". She, also, appeared on a ton of other TV shows and enjoyed a pretty good Broadway and motion picture career, as well. Some of her great supporting roles, in film, were in "Meet Me in St. Louis", "The Yearling" and "Sergeant York."
WILL TV, FINALLY, START TO GET BETTER??
I just read the Yahoo! TV column by Dave Nemetz. What caught my eye was his description of "reality TV" which, I thought, perfectly describes what it really is; "CHEAP, BRAINLESS PROGRAMMING". I read on and learned that things may be changing.
Dave says there are some new shows coming that are, actually, scripted by talented writers and acted by actual trained professional actors instead of some bimbo pulled in off the street. If they keep this up, I may actually start watching a little TV again. READ DAVES COLUMN HERE.
CELEBRATING NATIONAL CATFISH DAY
Did you know THERE ARE MORE THAN 3,000 CATFISH SPECIES KNOWN TO MAN.
SOUNDS LIKE A HEAT WAVE FOR THE BLACK HILLS THIS WEEK
Duane said they're forecasting 105 for Tomorrow. The National Weather Service says the hot weather will come with gusty winds and low humidities making for critical fire weather conditions.
That high heat is heading our way. Temperatures will likely reach the low to mid-90's on Wednesday and Thursday. Heat indices across Iowa and southern Wisconsin could reach the upper 90's to near 100.

TALKED TO AUNT WILDA YESTERDAY
I was sorry to inturrupt her rest. She was laying down when I called. She said she's been really tired lately.
Bob and Lynne want her to come for the 4th of July but she's not sure if she'll be up to it or not. I'm beginning to discover that, as you get older, it's best to take it by the day and not plan too far ahead.

DEER CROSSING
Donnie and Linda's property seems to have become a deer sanctuary. Here's another recent visitor. He's a cutie!
A NICE AFTERNOON WITH UNCLE BOB
Dorothy and I were talking and decided we should have thought of it earlier and asked the out of town cousins if they wanted to come but it was a spur of the moment thing, since Eric and Bert were here, and too late to notify anyone else. And, Uncle Bob didn't want a big crowd so it was probably best. I, on the other hand, want a very large crowd for my 90th birthday.
When I got home I discovered I didn't get a single picture of Paul and Dorothy or Eric and Bert or Jayden. The reason for that, I guess, is that they were so busy entertaining us I couldn't catch them. Maybe Roger got some shots of them. Or...maybe they weren't even there. Maybe it was all a dream.
When I looked at these pictures, something else came to mind. Uncle Bob looks better at 90 than I do at 72. I wonder how that happened?

I DON'T BELIEVE A WORD OF IT
Here's an article that says YOU DON'T NEED A DRINK. All you have to do is THINK about having a drink and it will calm you.
YOU CAN READ THE STORY HERE but let me tell you; I'm quite sure I've spent more time with psychiatrists and psychologists and more time in bars than anyone else in my family and I can tell you, without a doubt in my mind...thinking ain't gonna get 'er done!
STORMS IN WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA
I hope Rick and Angela didn't get into any of the storms, driving through to Wall yesterday. They had some bad storms in the western part of the state. Softball size hail was reported around Edgemont, in the Black Hills.
THUNDER MIGHT BE GOOD FOR A FEW MORE YEARS
I keep being surprised at how "frisky" Thunder still is at his age. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. I talked to a lady at the store, yesterday, who's cat just celebrated his 23rd birthday!! She says he's still quite active and loves to play.
IT WAS IN 1497
It was 515 years ago today that the first recorded sighting of North America, by a European, was made. It was John Cabot, an explorer for England, who looked through his telescope and saw land. And, behold! There, on the beach, were a bunch of Vikings, chewing on dried lutefisk, and waving back at him.
As Paul Harvey used to say......"Now you know the rest of the story."
GOOD WEATHER WEEK
We're into the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer and this week will be just about perfect weather, as far as I'm concerned. Sunny skies every day with highs in the 80's. Maybe, even a 90. The only problem is, the summer goes so fast and the winter stays soooooo loooong.
NEWS FROM LYNNE
We are hoping for rain as our flowers took a hit during the week we were gone despite having someone come to water. He probably only came once and with no rain, flowers need it every other day. It will be a big watering day tomorrow if no rain.
I oiled our deck yesterday and painted steps in the garage today. Bob and I moved all out of our garage to get it cleaned. Never-ending work.
I have lots of work to do on camcorder movies and photos from our trip to Georgia with Dawn and her pup. Fun times.
10 BRANDS THAT WILL DISAPPEAR IN 2013
Interesting article on Yahoo!, this morning, about 10 brands that will disappear in 2013. At the top of the list, and no surprise, is AMERICAN AIRLINES. And, AVON might not be calling anymore. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE FULL LIST.
A COUSIN GATHERING AT PAUL AND DOROTHYS TODAY
Those of us, here in town, will join Eric and Bert who came all the way from Johnson Creek for a little gathering with Uncle Bob today. Hopefully I'll get some good pictures to share with you later.
LIGHTENING SAFETY WEEK STARTS TODAY
