WE'VE GOT A WINTER WONDERLAND TODAY!

IN FRONT OF THE APARTMENT BUILDING
Today is the first time I had to wear my overshoes this winter.  There's very little traffic and only crazy old men like me are trudging through the snow.

It could be a lot worse.  There's no wind and it's not cold so it was, actually, a nice walk over to Co-op.  They were glad to see me.  I was about the only customer they had!

CHICAGO SNOW

Did you catch this page on Yahoo! this morning?  GOOD WINES AROUND $5.00

FROM THE TWIN CITIES

SNOWSTORM
The National Weather Service says up to 4 inches of snow has fallen along and west of the Mississippi River this morning causing a real mess on the highways.

Cars are in the ditch and a jack-knifed semi has been reported.

As the storm moves across the river, travel is expected to become a nightmare in Wisconsin too.

In other words, stay home where you belong!

COLD

FLU
All I can ask is what the hell is wrong with you people?  If ignorance is bliss, Wisconsin is heaven.

When I see that this state ranks as the 47th lowest state for people getting flu shots it's pretty hard to think anything else.

Reports say that most people say they don't get the shot because they've never had the flu.  As one person says, "I've never been hit by a car, either, but I still look both ways before I cross the street.

It should come as no surprise that the number of people hospitalized with flu is rising in Milwaukee this year and people suffering from flu in Minnesota is reported to be widespread.

HOMES
Now, this is a place I could call home!

LITTLE THINGS

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOBBY GOLDSBORO!  73 TODAY.

CATS
There's a new cat video on You Tube and, as they all are, this is as cute as can be.

NASTY WEATHER
I slept in until 4:30 this morning!  Might as well sleep.  The weather isn't good for anything else.

I looked at radar as soon as I got up and the snow was just coming across the river.

Most of the snow will fall this morning and it should leave 3 to 4 inches behind.  Get the snow blower out!

Winds will cause blowing and drifting snow, especially west of the river.

Temperature will stay below normal for the next week or so.  Mid-week wind chills will be 20 to 30 below zero again.  The sooner this winter is over the better!!

Maybe a little snowfall music from Doris Day will help ease the pain.

 DOWNTOWN
Great to see that there are, at least, 8 new businesses opening in downtown La Crosse by this summer.  There are more and more people living and working downtown and with the people here the business is sure to follow.  I love it!

I walked by the Hollywood yesterday and the sign company was out in that bitter cold working on the marquee.  There's been a lot of outside work done over these winter months.  I can't wait to see the theater open again.

FUNNY STUFF
That's what I like about the South.

DONNIE REPORTS:
"I watched the Cosby bit and then looked up those towns on Google Maps.  Due West, South Carolina is a cute, tiny village.  North, South Carolina is a typical railroad town and looks like Texas."

GOOFY BUSINESS
Just what I've always wanted.  A pair of used cowboy boots.

TELEVISION

Sherlock Holmes returns to Masterpiece Theater tomorrow night on PBS.

I WANT THIS!

I could spend this whole miserable weekend on one of these!  I've got two movies and a good book to go with it.

IS THERE NO END TO JANUARY?

FAMILY LIVING
Did you see MSN Living lists the best cities, in the country, for families.  Interesting to see Austin, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Madison and Sioux Falls on the list.  CHECK IT OUT HERE

CORN
Just what this world needs; more CORN POWER!

COLD
Miserable damn weather in this miserable damn part of the planet.

Wind chills are 15 to 20 below zero in parts of northeast Iowa and Southeast Minnesota.  They're about 5 below around here.

In addition to the never ending cold, the folks at the weather bureau say we can look for 3 to 4 inches of snow late tonight and tomorrow mainly west of the river.  The "west of the river" part is good.  Let Paul and Dorothy deal with it.  That's what they get for living in Minnesota.

And, just in case you haven't had enough ice and snow, check this out.

JOBS
There's an opening at Gunderson.

BETTY WHITE
Happy Birthday to Betty White.  She's 92 today!

COULEE REGION ADVENTURES
Have you ever watched "Coulee Region Adventures" on YouTube?  You might learn something.  After watching this I know why the fish aren't biting.  I didn't have my jig in the horizontal position.  Who knew?

DOGS

NUMBERS
154,889 people are spending their last day on earth today.  Yup!  That's about how many folks kick the bucket every day around the globe.  I've noticed that the older I get the more those death stories catch my eye.

FISH
I got into the fish tank thing when I was living in Texas.  It didn't take long to discover that it's expensive and a lot of work but it is a beautiful and relaxing thing to sit and watch.

I thought I had it looking pretty good at the time.  Then I ran across this website that shows the real art of aquascaping.  These tanks are real works of art.  CLICK HERE AND TAKE A LOOK

Sorry to hear the professor from "Gilligan's Island" is gone but he sure had a nice long life.  89 when he passed away.  Here he talks about some of his memories of the show.

JANUARY 16: MORE SNOW ON THE WAY

EMPLOYMENT
Wow!  This is interesting.  Richard Branson is about as successful as you can get and guess what he thinks is important in an employee!

I pass this along because texting and the iPhones seem to have left "personality" in the dust.  I see a lot of young college kids come and go in this building and it never ceases to amaze me how difficult it is for them to even say "hello".

PACKERS

FIGS
Hey kids, it's Fig Newton Day.  I'm sure Fig Newton's are about the most delicious thing you can eat but I can't stand figs.  Go figure.  Since I won't be eating mine, go ahead and help yourself.

OSCAR
The Oscar nominations have been announced and, again, I wasn't nominated.  Since I quit drinking my performances aren't what they used to be.

SNOWFLAKE
Isn't this just amazing?  We'll be able to pick some of these up in La Crosse today.

DOGS
Three cheers for the Westminster Dog Show.  For the first time, ever, mixed-breeds will be welcomed in.

IT AIN'T FAIR
They've had a mild winter in Europe and in Great Britain they're already seeing signs of spring!

DUMBEST NEWS STORY
The most ridiculous story I saw, this morning, came from a researcher at a university in London who released a statement that says her research shows that "drinking is bad for your memory".  I wonder how many drunks she had to interview before she figured that one out.  Give me a break.  Sometimes I think the more education they get the dumber they are.

WINDY DAKOTA
This is going to be a bad hair day in South Dakota.  Rapid City will see wind gusts to 65 MPH and it will be gusting to 58MPH in Sioux Falls.

PENNYS
Glad to see our Penny store survived the chopping block.  5 Penny stores will be closed in Wisconsin.

I used to love shopping at Pennys.  I hope they can turn it around.

CONGRESS
Prohibition went into effect on this date in 1920.  The greatest gift our government ever gave to organized crime.

BIRTHDAY
RONNIE MILSAP turns 71 today!

MORE SNOW
We'll, probably, pick up another inch of snow today  with wind gusts to 35 MPH. Wind chills will be 10 to 25 below zero tonight into tomorrow morning.

Another 2 to 3 inches of snow  can be expected tomorrow night into Saturday morning.

JANUARY 15: GOOD GOLLY MOLLY, IT'S COLD OUT THERE!

BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT FOR CENTRAL MINNESOTA.  STRONG WINDS AND WHITE OUT CONDITIONS TOMORROW.

I used to hate January.  I'm now beginning to despise it.

IT'S A "CRISP" MORNING
It's such a beautiful, sunny, morning I thought I'd take a quick walk to town.  It didn't take long for me to figure out that the sun wasn't doing much to warm things up.  When I got home I checked the outside temperature: Only 2 degrees above zero at 9 AM   That's too cold for this sturdy Viking!

Tonight the forecast calls for snow and freezing drizzle.  Tomorrow we're looking at temperatures in the 20's with wind gusts close to 40 MPH.

We are now into some SERIOUS WINTER and we are not  pleased!

RITA, ROGER AND JACOB HAD QUITE A TRIP, OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS, YESTERDAY, ON THE WORST WEATHER DAY WE'VE HAD THIS WINTER!

They took Jacob back to Madison and the university following the Christmas holiday.

Rita said, "After some consideration between the truck and the van we decided the truck would be better in the snow.  Thank God we took the truck.

On the drive down, we saw three semis, one SUV, and two cars in the ditch.

We stopped at the Dells for breakfast.  When we got back in the truck, the roads were just wet and stayed that way until we left Madison.

We came home through Viroqua on the smaller highways and the snow came and the wind blew.  It was awful.

We stopped to see Aunt Wilda and she hasn’t felt good for the last 3 days.  Said her bones were starting to fracture and then today she seemed sick to her stomach.  She was really glad to see us and we visited for awhile.  Then we left and took the back roads to the Amish furniture maker who had our new dining room chairs for us.

By that time, the wind and snow were even worse.  When we got the chairs and left, we could barely see the road.  Drove over to Sparta and down the Interstate at 40 – 50 mph.  Only teenage girls and semis passed us. Saw four cars in the ditch on the way home.

RITA AND ROGER MISSED THE BIGGEST HIGHWAY MESS YESTERDAY

It was a 20 car pile-up near the Marathon/Portage county line.  Hard to believe but there was only one person injured.

SPEAKING OF TRAVEL

Flying sure isn't what it used to be.  Sadly, people aren't either.  We have become a world of spoiled slobs.

JANUARY 14: I'M PROTESTING WINTER TODAY

WINTER IS BLASTING WISCONSIN
From what I can see from the window, this is a miserable day to be outside.

There's 6 to 7 inches of new snow over Jackson and southern Clark Counties.  It looks like there's still some light snow falling here in town but the wind is blowing it around in great clouds.

The National Weather Service says blowing and drifting will make driving hazardous this afternoon.

I'M READING THAT DirecTV CUSTOMERS HAVE LOST THE WEATHER CHANNEL

The cable company and the Weather Channel are fighting over fees.

When Paul, Dorothy and I had lunch a week ago the subject of the Weather Channel came up.  Paul and I were in total agreement that, since NBC bought the service, they've managed to turn it into a useless piece of crap.  The folks with the DirecTV dish haven't lost much.

It was on January 14, 1970 that that the Supremes sang, together for the last time, at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas.

The Supremes are gone, the Frontier is gone.  That's time for you.  Nothing is forever.

AND HERE'S ANOTHER BIT OF MUSIC HISTORY
It was on February 14, 1960 that ELVIS was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the U.S. Army.

PLANNING ON RE-PAINTING SOME ROOMS IN THE SPRING?
My interior decorator tells me that BLACK WALLS are the "in thing" for 2014.

I had a friend in Rapid City who painted her living room black (and this was way back in the 60's) and I thought she was insane......until I saw it!  It was FANTASTIC!  I never forgot that room.

LOTS OF THINGS TO CELEBRATE TODAY

It was such a beautiful day, today.  Lot's of sun and mild temperatures for January.  Unfortunately, that kind of weather doesn't last long in the middle of winter.

There's snow on the way for late tonight and most of the day tomorrow.  Winter weather advisories are up for La Crosse to Janesville to Madison for 3 to 5 inches of snow.  We'll have some wind with that.  Looks like the BIG wind will be in eastern South Dakota where I see warnings for white out conditions.

THANK YOU DIGG
For condensing the Golden Globes down to 90 seconds.  This is much better than trying to stay awake through hours of totally boring ego trips.

And here's an interesting item of movie history.  According to the National Museum of American History, It was 75 years ago, today, that it was announced that Vivien Leigh had gotten the part to play Scarlett in "Gone With the Wind".

We're celebrating all sorts of things today, boys and girls.  Let's start with RUBBER DUCKY DAY!

LA CROSSE FORECAST:
Snow tonight.  1 to 3 inches.
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FROM 9 PM TONIGHT TO 3 PM TOMORROW.

IT'S STEPHEN FOSTER DAY
This gives me a chance to play, what has become, my theme song.

DID YOU KNOW THAT CATS LOVE WATERMELON?

I KNOW WHAT I'M GOING TO DO TODAY!

When I got the desk from Aunt Wilda I vowed I would keep it clean and neat at all times.  Now look at it!  Guess I'll clean it off this morning!

Did you know there's a McDonalds IN THE LOURVE IN PARIS?

I think I'll put that in my "HOW TACKY CAN YOU GET" file.

Oh, Josh!  You've got it sooo right!

I like this photo.  I used to live in San Francisco and remember those cold foggy winter days.

AMAZING!
I DIDN'T KNOW.
ERIC HAS HIS OWN TEAM!
WYATT EARP DIED ON JANUARY 13, 1929

I don't remember what year it was.  Mid-60's, I suppose.  I was standing, in line, to board a plane in Rapid City, bound for Minneapolis.  Johnny Cash and June Carter had performed in the Black Hills the night before and they were on their way to Minneapolis on the same plane.

They were right behind me in line and we had a quick visit while waiting.  I met a lot of famous people during my working days and the meeting with Johnny and June was one of the most memorable.

It was on January 13, 1968 that Johnny Cash made music history when he performed for the inmates at Folsom Prison.

I see it was SOUTHWEST Airlines that landed at the wrong airport this time.  This was at the end of a Chicago to Branson, Missouri flight last night.

It's really surprising the number of planes that have landed at the wrong airport over the years.  I remember it happening in Rapid City in 2004 when a Northwest flight landed at Ellsworth Air Force Base rather than the Rapid City airport.

The best count I could find shows that there have been 7 incidents of commercial flights landing at the wrong airport since 2010.

This usually happens where the two airports are very close together, as they are in Rapid City and Branson.
