GOOGLE IS EVERYWHERE
The talk is, now, that they might start opening retail stoes to sell their Chrome notebooks, their Nexus stuff and other items.
Donnie has been reading some history.

"I forget his name but some old Oregon governor is a guy you'd love.

One hundred years ago, yesterday, he horn-swaggled Oregon Lawmakers into protecting the entire 362 miles of Oregon coastline by convincing both the public and the legislature that it was a road!

People, at the time, were only concerned with economic development, not conservation, so he came up with this argument that carried the day.  Stagecoaches had used the beaches as a route between cities so it wasn't much of a stretch.

It is because of him that Oregon's entire coastline is maintained as a public space, undeveloped and off-limits to industrial degradation.  Even Teddy Roosevelt called him the most visionary environmentalist of his time.

Now, if I could just remember the geezer's name!"

Have no fear.  I keep telling you I know everything.  Now, I'll prove it.

The governor's name was Oswald West and I can't imagine forgetting a name like that.  He only served one term and, rather than run again, he moved his family to Portland where he set up a law practice.

The entire Oregon coastline remains public land and out of reach of "developers" who I tend to dispise even more than politicians.
Hey!  Here's a restaurant idea we need in La Crosse.  There's a restaurant in New York, on Park Avenue, no less, called EARL'S BEER AND CHEESE (CHECK OUT THEIR WEBSITE) where they serve gourmet food all based on cheese with some great beer selections to go with it.

If a beer and cheese eatery isn't the best idea for a Wisconsin restaurant, I don't know what is!
The Financial Times says that Japanese scientists have shown that chimpanzees are far better than humans at some mental tasks such as rapidly memorising and recalling numbers.

I've got news for the Financial Times and those Japanese scientists.  A tsetse fly is far better at some mental tasks than this human is.
This gets my vote as the top TV commercial of the day:
An interesting bit of history, from the Wisconsin Historical Society, that happened on this date:

1943- Mildred Harnack Guillotined in Berlin

On this date Mildred Harnack was guillotined in Berlin, Germany.

Harnack was born in Milwaukee and studied and lectured at the University of Wisconsin. She and her husband, Arvid Harnack, were key members of a German resistance group which assisted German Jews and political dissidents, circulated illegal literature, met secretly with prisoners of war, and worked to document Nazi atrocities in Europe.

Known by the Nazis as the "Red Orchestra," Harnack's companions were arrested, tortured, and tried for their activities. Mildred Harnack was guillotined in Berlin on the personal orders of Adolf Hitler. [Source: UW - Madison Archives and Records Management Services]

My birthday is just around the corner and I know just what I want for a gift.  It's a vacation on the banks of the Bamboo River in Thailand right next to an elephant rehabilitation reserve where they promise me I can have breakfast with the baby elephants.

In case you think this may be a bit too primitive for you, think again!  This safari is run by FOUR SEASONS HOTELS, one of my former employers, and your tent will feature hand made leather and wood furniture, hardwood floors and copper bathtubs for two and after a day in the bush you can relax with a cocktail at the Burma Bar before dinner.  Now, that's my idea of camping out!  FOR MORE INFORMATION CLICK HERE
Early morning temperatures, this Saturday morning, ranged from single digits over north central Wisconsin to the lower teens over northeast Iowa.

Southerly winds will bring warmer weather tomorrow.  While todays highs will be around 20, tomorrows highs will be closer to 30.
GREAT NEWS FROM DONNIE
"While asteroids and meteors were flying over large parts of the earth, it may cheer you to know that today, over south Texas, large flocks of geese are heading north.  A sure sign of warming weather, although it seems a bit early."

WIND CHILLS DOWN TO
6 BELOW TOMORROW
(Sigh)
I'm glad I have memories of flying back in the days when the planes were actually filled with civilized passengers.

Earlier this month, on a flight landing in Minneapolis, a baby is crying on his mothers lap.  The passenger sitting next to the mother and child doesn't like it so he slaps the baby's face.

The gentleman may have had a bad day and a crying baby can be a bit irritating but a civilized society expects an adult to have enough control over his emotions to refrain from hitting kids.  I'm glad to see he's been charged with simple assault.

MY FAVORITE

FESTIVAL

Guess I'd better make a trip to Festival for a few items this morning.  Don't need much but don't want to run out over the weekend.

So tired of this damn winter.  I'm ready for spring!!
BIG MORNING FOR DONNIE:
"My turn for meds.  Fasted last night.  Total-Body exam this morning.  Big lunch to follow."
I think this is why we won the cold war.
WIND CHILL VALUES AS LOW AS 1 BELOW TODAY
Duane said, "I hate February" and I couldn't agree more.  When you get to February you're so sick of winter and spring is so tantalizingly close.

Even though it's the shortest month of the year, every miserable days seems to last a whole month.

Rapid City got some more snow.  Duane said, "The snow covered my decks again.  Strong wind too.  It destroyed one of the bird houses my brother gave me.  Blew it out of a pine tree and smashed it."
I just read a couple of numbers that surprise me.  Sioux Falls has 19 taxi companies and five limousine companies.

Both Rapid City and Sioux Falls have grown so much since I moved out.  McAllen and Edinburg are, probably, twice as big as they were when I lived there.

Could it be that I'm bad for business?
Here's a Valentine pick-up line if I ever heard one!

I'm excited to see there's a new therapy being used in the treatment for depression that is showing great promise.  If you know someone suffering from depression, you might want to pass this along.
Wherever you go.  Whatever you do.  They are watching you.  I'm glad I lived during the "good times".

The U.S. Greeting Card Association says about 190 million valentines are sent each year in the U.S.A.
Happy birthday to Hugh Downs.  He's 92 today.
ANOTHER MERGER
This time AMERICAN AIRLINES and US AIR, which will now make them the largest airline in the world.

We're going to end up with two or three GIANT airlines, in the country, which will set the fares and standards for the entire industry and do exactly the opposite of what "de-regulation" was supposed to have done.  So much for the "trickle down theory".

BY THE WAY: The average coach class international fares will go up 8.3% this year.  How about a new slogan, "We'll get you there if you can afford the fare."
One day Ole goes to see his doctor. Ole says, “Doc, I just don’t know vat to do. Lena and me, vell, our sex life just ain’t going dat vell”.

The doctor says, “Ole, all you need is some exercise. I want you to walk ten miles every day. You give me a call in a week and let me know how you’re doing.

So, a week later the phone rings and the doctor answers it. A voice on the other end says, “Doc, dis is Ole!” The doctor says, “Hello Ole. Have you been walking ten miles every day?”

Ole says, “Yes”

The doctor says, “And has your sex life improved?”

Ole replies, “Vell, how da hell vould I know? I’m seventy miles from home!”
Are we really only half way through February?  I hate this month.

Our warmest day, through Sunday, will be today at 33.  Our coldest night for the next four days will be tomorrow night at 7 above.  Any way you look at it, that's just plain miserable.
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY
Humans aren't the only ones who celebrate Valentines day!

I mentioned chewing gum earlier today.  Now, I just found out that CHEWING GUM IS, ACTUALLY, FORBIDDEN IN SINGAPORE!
Some more snow moving in tonight.  Less than an inch by morning but we could get another inch, during the day, tomorrow.
Sorry to hear of the death of RICK HUXLEY who was bassist for the DAVE CLARK FIVE.  He was 72 (same age as me).
I was just reading that chewing gum sales have fallen off, big time, and the industry is trying to figure out how to get folks chewing again.

I hadn't thought about it, until now, but it occurred to me that I can't remember when I last saw somebody chewing a piece of gum.

Time moves on and change never stops.  Most everything I remember as a kid just doesn't exist anymore.  Most of the people I remember as a kid don't exist anymore either.

I guess it's just another reminder to enjoy what you got while you still got it.
DAVID LETTERMAN had a good line last night.  He asked the audience if they had made up their mind what they would be giving up for lent.  Then he added, "You know, the Pope gave up popeing!"
I got to wondering what the warmest city in the world was.  Turns out it's BANGKOK.  They'll have a high today of 97...which is about normal for every day.  I could handle it!
Did you know you blink every 2 to 10 seconds.

There!  I did it!  Now, you're going to be conscious of every blink for the rest of the day to see if I'm correct.  And, of course, the more you think about it the more you'll blink.

I just love driving people crazy.
Remember when gas was 16 cents a gallon?  Probably not.  It was way back in 1935, on this date, that the state of Wisconsin established a minimum price of 16 cents for a gallon of gas.

When I looked at Rapid City's weather at 3:00 PM the temperature was 47 degrees and they're expecting a high of 48 tomorrow.

I sure wouldn't mind if they'd send a little bit of that weather this way.
CheapOair says the bulk of the spring breakers, this year, are heading to Las Vegas, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.
So, you think you've got a neat TV, huh?  You got one of those big flat screens you hang on the wall?

Forget it.  No matter how much you have, there's always someone who has more.

Oh, and yes, this television set is real.

MATT DAMON GOES ON STRIKE!
This is funny but the subject is serious!  MATT DAMON IS ON TOILET STRIKE--SEE IT HERE

Anybody giving up anything for lent?  I heard one person say "I'm giving up snow for lent."

I don't think this church really meant what the bulletin board seems to say.
HAPPY FAT TUESDAY!
LENT BEGINS TOMORROW

Charles Schulz, the creator of PEANUTS died on February 12, 2000.  He was 77 years old.

I think I may, actually, be able to get out of the apartment today.  A gradually clearing sky with light winds and a high of 32 isn't bad for a day in mid-February.

Drive by shooting on the North Side today.  I guess there is no "safe place" anymore.
They say we'll see some sun tomorrow!  You won't hear me complaining.
Love the story about the 12 year old boy who boarded a plane in Brussels and flew to Malaga, Spain.  No boarding pass.  No I.D.  Apparently, were was no security checks either.

Somebody will have a lot of explaining to do.

SAVE THE WHALE

This is one of the most beautiful videos I've ever seen.  Thanks to Ron for sending it.

IT'S A FACT

There's one (and only one) state highway in the U.S. that prohibits motorized vehicles.  Know where it is?

It's in Michigan and it's highway M-185 on Mackinaw Island.

A NOTE FROM DUANE

"Have to clear the driveway and a path to the mailbox.  Where is my show shoveler when I need him?  It's damn cold out there."

MY DAY

I got an early start this morning and rearranged all the furniture in the living room.  I'm getting ready for spring but I wonder if I'm being too optimistic.  When I look out the window it seems like spring is a long way away!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Remember TINA LOUISEWho could forget that beautiful actress on Gilligans Island?  She turns 79  TODAY.  Real name?  Tatiana Josivovna Chemova Blacker.  Try to put that on a marquee!

Another birthday today.  BURT REYNOLDS is celebrating 77 years.  We hope he's all better now.  He was a victim of this years flu outbreak and hospitalized on January 29.

ROGER SHOWS OFF
THE FAMILY

YAHOO! HEALTH

I don't want you to miss Yahoo! Health today that features some of the scary stuff they put in your food.  This may make you stop and think about what you're eating!!

GREAT RADIO

Want to listen to some music while you're surfing the net?  Pick the kind of music you like.

Would you rather catch the news, sports, or some great talk shows?  How about listening to one of your local radio stations?

It's ALL HERE ON ONE WEB PAGE!

TUNE IN is just about the greatest web site I've ever found!  I can listen to my favorite oldies rock and roll, while I'm on line, I love to check in on the news at WBBM IN CHICAGO, 1010 WINS, NEW YORK OR WTOP IN WASHINGTON DC.

I can also listen to BBC or NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO.

It's all on TUNE IN  Check it out.  You'll love it!!

WE'RE ALL GETTING OLD

ROBERT WAGNER
TURNS 83 TODAY

TRAVEL TIP

If you know anybody planning a trip to New York this summer have them CHECK OUT THIS HOTEL.  I'm familiar with the location and it's a super spot, in Manhattan, for the Broadway shoes, Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center and other city attractions.

WINTER WEATHER

The National Weather Service says, along and south of the I-90 corridor a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow can be expected today.  As temperatures climb above freezing the wintery mix will change to all rain.  There will still be some snow, around here, tomorrow but it shouldn't amount to much.

North of us, tomorrow, it's a different story.  Check out this weather map from the NWS.

CATS AND DOGS

A NOTE FROM WILLARD:  "Just read your blog.  While I was still at home I had a Persian cat (Patricia) and a toy Manchester (Mike).  They were very compatible and if a stray dog came in the yard Patricia would protect Mike."

THE RICH AND FAMOUS

CARL MADE AN OBSERVATION:
"I'm watching the Whitney Houston memorial.  I think she was a fabulous singer but most of the people putting on the show spend more time promoting themselves than remembering Whitney.  The Hollywood group is all about self promotion."

CATS AND DOGS

WHO SAYS A CAT AND DOG CAN'T GET ALONG?

BLACK DEER

Roger sent this picture of a BLACK DEER.
The black deer is very rare but here's something you might be interested in.

THE BEST PLACE TO SEE A BLACK DEER IS IN TEXAS.  As a matter of fact,  there are more black deer in 8 counties in Texas than there are in the rest of the world combined.

Here's a black deer that was SPOTTED IN AUSTIN.

Note to Donnie:
Keep your camera handy.  There are, indeed, black deer in your area and one could pop into your back yard any day!

WINTER WEATHER

It's 5:05 A.M.  Still dark out.  I'm hearing, what sounds like, little ice pellets hitting the windows.  I don't like that sound at all.

SCANDINAVIANS

I think it must be a combination of the cold and the long nights that cause the Scandinavians to do some really odd things.

You've got to LOOK AT THIS PICTURE of these SWEDISH VIKINGS SITTING ON BLOCKS OF ICE.  They sit there for 48 HOURS in below zero temperatures.

Come to think of it, RON IS ONE OF THOSE SWEDISH VIKINGS.  I've never seen him sit on a block of ice for two days but I've seen him do a lot of other goofy things.

BEST BBQ

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC is featuring a list of the ten best Barbecue restaurants in the USA.  The closest one to us would be ARTHUR BRYANT'S IN KANSAS CITY.  They've been around since the 1920's and have served many celebrities and presidents.

I noticed that one of the top 10 is right in DONNIE AND LINDA'S "NECK OF THE WOODS".  The SALT LICK restaurant is located in DRIFTWOOD, TEXAS which is just north of San Marcos.  It features an indoor open pit where you can watch your meat being cooked.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

A large SOLAR FLARE erupted from the sun early yesterday morning, aimed right at the earth.  Not to worry.  We won't burn up but we could see some spectacular NORTHERN LIGHTS in the next 2 to 3 days.

THANKS RON!

I THINK I'LL STICK WITH CHINESE NEW YEAR

They tell me this is Natonal Umbrella Day.  I suppose one could celebrate that in the South but up here, in the land of ice and snow, an umbrella is the last thing that comes to mind in the middle of February!
