Do you have any idea what it costs you working folks to get to work?

I'M GLAD TO SEE PENNY'S IS MAKING A COME BACK.

SALES UP 6% in the first quarter of the year and that's the second quarter of sales increase they've had.

I always liked shopping at Penny's.  Hope they stay around for a long time.

Meanwhile WAL-MART SALES ARE THE WEAKEST THEY'VE BEEN IN FIVE YEARS.  I love hearing that!

GETTING OLD? HEAD FOR SOUTH DAKOTA!

BANKRATE.COM says it may be cold in the winter but if you're planning to retire, there's no better place to be in the USA than SOUTH DAKOTA!

South Dakota has one of the highest health care rankings in the USA.  It has a low cost of living and the sixth lowest crime rate in the country and you're going to LOVE the lower taxes.

After South Dakota comes Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming.

Notice two things.  They're all in the middle of the country and they're all west of the Mississippi River.

I've said it many times and I'll say it again.  Anyone living east of the Mississippi isn't really living.  And, if you're going to live in the WEST you might as well live in the BEST state and we all know which state this is, don't we?

Thanks to Ron for sending me the article.

SUMMERTIME WORK

If you're kid is looking for a summertime job, the best place for a kid to work a summertime job is SEATTLE.  They just raised THE MINIMUM WAGE to $15.00 an hour!

SAN FRANCISCO RENT

Renting an apartment in San Francisco is a bit more expensive today than it was in my day back in the '60 when I lived there!

The average rent for a studio apartment in the Golden Gate City, these days, is $2,100 A MONTH!

Too bad we can't send some of our rain to Brazil.

We're getting more rain than we know
what to do with in Wisconsin.  That, and the cool spring, will mean a later planting time.  Meanwhile, Brazil is in a drought.  That means HIGHER COFFEE PRICES.

AIR FARES

THE DONALD

So.  The Donald bought himself a new plane.  This sure as hell would beat sitting in coach class on a low fare airline with a bag of peanuts in your hand.

SEARS OBIT

It was in 1972 that Sears started building what, then, was to be the worlds tallest building.  It's still a landmark building but, alas no longer the tallest and no longer the Sears Building.

And now, the final nail in the coffin.  Sears retail store, that has been doing business in Chicago's loop since 1932, has gone out of business and closed this past Sunday.

MOVIES "MADE IN CHINA"

Did you know that China's movie industry has invested in two up-coming Hollywood movies?  Chinese movie interests also have stakes in some of the biggest USA movie chains that account for half of all ticket sales in this country.

TRAVEL NOTES

Donnie says, "It is now so costly to fly from Austin to La Crosse (Round trip is $600+) that it is nearly cheaper to drive, even with hotels and gas."

And, Ron tells me, "We leave our ship in Florida, this morning, and start heading home."

I can't remember where  they were "floating from" but, I'm sure, we'll get a report when they get back.

$$$$ MADNESS

HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES
Think your gas prices are too high?  You could always move to Manhattan.  Almost nobody, who lives there, owns a car.  Of course, rent is a touch higher than it is around here.  In fact, the AVERAGE RENT IN MANHATTAN IS $3,418.00 A MONTH.  You might have already guessed that buying a home on that glittering island is simply out of the question.

THINK ABOUT IT

QUOTE OF THE DAY comes from M. I. T. economist Daron Acemoglu.

"When one person can write a check to finance your whole campaign, how inclusive will you be, as an elected official, to listen to competing voices?"
