WE HAVE 3400 OGANIC FARMERS IN TOWN FOR A CONFERENCE THIS WEEKEND.
It's probably a good time for it. They sure aren't going to be planting anything until it warms up. IF it warms up. I'm beginning to have my doubts.
IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE WE'VE SEEN WEATHER THIS COLD
The Weather Channel says this is the coldest February Chicago and Madison have had since 1979 and Green Bay hasn't been this cold since 1936.

BRIAN, MY CHECKER AT THE CO-OP, TELLS ME THE WARM UP WILL BEGIN ON MARCH 10.
He says he got his information, on good authority, from a customer who is a weather expert. I told him he'd better be right or I'll take my business back to Festival.

QUIT COMPLAINING! YOU COULD BE IN WORLAND TODAY.
It's a miserable day in Wyoming. With heavy snow (up to 10 inches southeast of Worland) and wind chills to 25 below I'll bet Rick, Angela and the dogs are staying close to the fireplace!
They're waiting for 3 to 6 inches of snow in Rapid City today with higher amounts in the hills. Wind chills will be as cold as 35 below and don't even think about driving anywhere.

Word of advice: In life, you have 3 choices: you can watch things happen, make things happen, or wonder what the hell happened

Those of you who know me intimately will not be surprised when I say I belong in the third group. As I reach the end of my days, I realize that I, actually, remember very little of what happened but what I DO remember sure was a lot of fun and I loved every minute of it!
MARCH COMES IN LIKE AN ICEBERG
The average high for the first of March in La Crosse is 44 degrees. The record high for the first of March was 84 degrees in 1986. So what can we expect for the first day of March this year? A high of 10 above with a 70% chance for snow. I wonder if things will ever be "normal" again?
On the bright side: We could warm up to the mid-20's on Wednesday!
IT COULD BE WORSE: It's 38 below in YellowKnife Canada this morning.

A BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ROGER DALTRY WHO TURNS 69 TODAY
He began his long career as the lead singer of the 60's group, THE WHO and then went on to a spectacular solo career.
This is a clip from 1967 when The Who performed on the Smothers Brothers Comedy HOur.
OK! I suppose I should also mention that Justin Bieber celebrates his 20th birthday today. I hope he manages to stay out of jail.

WAITING FOR THE BARGE TRAFFIC
A report in the La Crosse Tribune says the average opening date for Lake Pepin barge traffic is March 21st but we, probably, won't see any barges that early this year. Our severe winter has produced 30" inch thick ice on the south end of the lake and a 19" thick ice pack at the north end.
We may start warming up a bit next week but it's going to be a while before we're rid of the ice and snow.
Farmers are getting nervous too. This awful weather may delay getting into the fields for spring planting.
Even Roger, who hates the heat and loves the cold, has had more than enough cold for this season. It's not easy getting the old body out in those freezing temperatures of early morning to feed the animals.

3:19 PM: THE SNOW HAS STARTED TO FALL
Mt. La Crosse may be happy to see this white crap falling out of the sky but I'll bet you won't find anyone else who's in the mood for more snow!
WE'RE ONLY 19 DAYS AWAY FROM THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING
At 10:00 A.M. it was only 1 degree above zero and it's snowing just across the river and heading this way. Mother Nature is going to have to do a lot of warming and melting in the next 19 days if it's ever going to look like this again.
I just got a horrible thought. What if this summer gets as hot as this winter was cold? With the weather extremes, these days, you might as well expect the worst!

A NOTE FROM DONNIE BROUGHT BACK A BUNCH OF MEMORIES
"Don the Beachcomber was once a national chain of bars. I bought this deck of cards. The figure even looks a bit like me."
Don the Beachcomber (from Limestone County Texas) was known by several names, through the years, and got his start as a bootlegger during prohibition.
Don had a chain of bars that followed his first establishment in Hollywood. It quickly became famous as a favorite watering hole to the stars.
He always reminded me of Capt. Tony, the Key West legend, who had a bar there. Capt. Tony is gone but the bar survives. Rita, Carl, Kathy and I have a sipped a few at Capt. Tony's through the years.
Don the Beachcombers biggest competition was Trader Vic who had a popular night spot in San Francisco that also became a chain.
Both Don and Vic claimed to have invented the Mai Tai. Which reminds me, didn't there used to be a bar in La Crosse called the Mai Tai? I think I had a few drinks there once. Of course, there aren't many bars you can name, in the continental United States, where I haven't had a few drinks.

WIND CHILL UPDATE FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
TEMPERATURES EARLY THIS MORNING RANGE FROM THE 20S BELOW ZERO OVER NORTH CENTRAL WISCONSIN TO THE SINGLE DIGITS TO TEENS BELOW ZERO OVER NORTHEAST IOWA.
THE COMBINATION OF THESE COLD TEMPERATURES AND SOUTHEAST WINDS OF 5 TO 15 MPH IS PRODUCING BITTERLY COLD WIND CHILLS OF 20 TO 35 BELOW ZERO.
RITA BOUGHT A NEW "SMART PHONE", THE OTHER DAY, BUT SHE TOOK IT BACK BACAUSE IT WAS TOO SMART FOR HER.
She couldn't figure out how to use it and discovered it was more trouble than it was worth.
I'm beginning to think computers, in general, are more trouble than they're worth. I know I'm right about that because Roger agrees with me and he's the smartest man I know.
I was thinking about that, this morning, after I ran across an article from POPULAR SCIENCE. It's about a new washing machine that connects to your smart phone.
Among other things, "it remembers to wash gym shorts differently from dress shirts". Hold it right there! I don't have any gym shorts and I only have one dress shirt so I hardly need a washing machine that can tell the difference between the two.
This machine also orders more laundry detergent from Amazon through your smart phone. Hold it right there again! Do you mean to tell me that you really believe that a machine that orders more laundry detergent from a mail order company will make your life easier than grabbing a bottle of Tide as you walk by the detergent aisle in the Super Market????
Anyway, if you want to read more about this amazing new invention, CLICK HERE . Or, do you have a smart phone that, actually, does your clicking for you??
ONE OF MY NEW TWITTER FOLLOWERS IS THE BOAT HOUSE IN WINONA
I looked at their website (CLICK HERE) and made a note of it. I'm imagining a pleasant Sunday drive, along the river, from La Crosse to Winona for a nice meal there. That is, of course, if we ever warm up enough to have a summer.

DUANE CHECKS IN
"Through Monday, frigid temps, snow and wind. 1 to 3 inches of the white stuff. Really tired of this bitter cold weather."
UNCLE BOB CALLED TODAY
He sounded so good! He said he's feeling good. He'd like to get out, a bit, but it's so icy around the apartments he doesn't dare go. Like the rest of us, he's sick of the cold weather.
There's only one "sicko", in the family, that I know about. Roger has a terrible cold/flu. Another one of those awful things that comes with winter. I talked to him yesterday and he sounded like he was in bad shape. Rita and I went to lunch yesterday and she said he had been feeling really bad.
BOOKS I'VE READ
This book came out a few years ago but I just finished reading it yesterday. It's an excellent biography that gives you an idea of just what a wonderful man George Harrison was. There are also some interesting stories about the rest of the Beatles too.

HERE'S A WEB PAGE YOU MIGHT WANT TO LOOK AT.
It's an article about ICE FISHING ON LAKE MINOCQUA. READ IT HERE I enjoyed the lake in the summer time but would have no interest visiting in the winter time!
WE'RE BACK!
We haven't frozen solid, yet, but we're covered with a very heavy frost!
If you don't think It's been cold in Wisconsin, you should know we've have 42 todays of below zero weather and that's DOUBLE what we usually have during a regular winter.
The sad part is that the next seven days look just as cold as the last seven days. Everyone is asking the same question. When will this end?
