SPRING GREEN CALLING
THE WEATHER IS TOO GOOD TO LAST
Finally, for a change, a sunny day, a light breeze and temperatures in the 60's.
I made a "pill stroll" over to Walgreen's and it felt so good being out in shirt sleeves.
But, it's too good to last. There are some scattered thunderstorms moving our way from Iowa and we could see some of that this afternoon and tonight. We could see some storms with small hail and gusty winds.

SPRING SNEEZING
I'm beginning to dislike spring. I have done nothing but sneeze, blow and sniff all morning.
I checked "sneezing" on TWITTER and discovered most of the world is sneezing today so I'm not alone.
Don't get me wrong! I'd rather be warm and sneezing than cold and shivering.

Looks like it will be cold and wet while Donnie is here. That will teach him not to even think about coming north until July or August!
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE A PLACE LIKE THIS IN THE COULEE??

THIS WOULD BE A GREAT NAME FOR A BAR ON 3RD STREET
If I ever got back to Los Angeles, I'd want to hit a bar in West Hollywood just because I like the name; THE CHURCH KEY and because they serve PIG EAR CHEETOS. I have no idea what "Pig Ear Cheetos" are but I'd like to say I ate them.
Actually, I wouldn't have to go all the way to L.A. to drink at the Church Key Bar. THERE'S A CHURCH KEY BAR IN MADISON. I'll bet Jacob could tell me about that place!
It's on University Avenue and they tell me it's a "Dive, college bar and eccentric hangout for drunks". I don't know about "College Bar" but "dive and eccentric hangout for drunks" sure rings my bell!
IF YOU LIKE RAIN YOU'LL LOVE LA CROSSE
The weatherman says there's a GOOD CHANCE FOR THUNDERSTORMS FROM TODAY INTO MONDAY.
A few of the thunderstorms, tomorrow night, could be strong to severe through Northeast Iowa and Southwest Wisconsin. LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS will be the mail threats.
MY FAVORITE COLOR IS ORANGE
Folks are impressed with the computer tune-up service I got from Orange Computer here in La Crosse.
Rita said, "I think you should start sending your repair people thank you cards." And Daniel added, "Yes. That is good and very inexpensive service. WOW!"
They were really busy and had so many computers to work on they said they would try hard to get it fixed yesterday but, being they are closed on weekends, they would do it first thing on Monday.
I figured, if they were like most service stores, I might as well plan on going through the weekend without a computer but...the phone rang at 4:30 and it was Orange telling me they had just finished it up and I could come and get it before they closed.
These people give service like we used to get back in the '40's and 50's but rarely see today. And, the prices are more than reasonable.

BIG CROWD AT TOLEDO CONCERT
Donnie said he had to drive back to his motel in a thunderstorm after the concert in Toledo last night. But, when he got there he was greeted with this.
I'm hoping that brings him good luck for his drive to La Crosse.

IT'S FIXED!
My computer is working again, thanks to the guys at Orange Computer! I was glad to hear that this time, for a change, the problem was not my fault. I can't say that very often.
A HOPLESS MESS
I have spent most of the morning, so far, trying to fix yet another mess I made out of this computer.
You don't know what a virus is until you turn me loose on your computer. I have decided that I am the most dangerous computer virus there is. I have the ability to completely destroy your machine in less than 5 minutes.
Hey! What can I say? We all have to be good at something.

THE LATEST DISPATCH FROM DONNIE
"Antwerp, Ohio is a charming little prairie hamlet and I'm enjoying more of spring harbingers in the North. Evergreen woods, dandelions, tulips ablaze, robins and redwing blackbirds.
Reached Toledo by noon. Suddenly found myself in front of the Toledo Museum of Art. I had forgotten what an outstanding museum it is, among the top 10 in the nation and famous for its unique glass collection.
Tomorrow I'll visit my alma mater, though I think school season is winding down and I'm not likely to find anyone who has been in the history department 40 years.
My motel is a good way out of Toledo proper but both the University and evening concert venue are easy reaches off the same street that passes the motel.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TONI TENNILLE
Cathryn Antoinette Tennille is just a couple of weeks older than me. She turns 74 today.
The last few years have not been very happy for the Captain and Tennille. "Captain" Daryl Dragon suffers from a neurological condition, much like Parkinson's Disease, and is no longer able to play the keyboard.
Toni filed for divorce from the Captain in January of this year. The couple had been married for 39 years. Sadly, the Captain knew nothing about a divorce until he was served the papers which referenced "health issues" as a reason for the divorce.
A VISIT TO HOLMEN
Rita, Roger and I are going to Janie's today. I'm hoping we'll get a chance to see her, again, while Donnie is here but she doesn't always stay put long enough to catch her home. Next week she takes off for Colorado.
UPDATE FROM DONNIE
"Indiana is living up to my bias that it is the dullest state. One of my older jokes is that I've met many a man I didn't like, but I've never been to a place I didn't like....except Indiana.
Stuck for an hour in a 10 mile freeway stoppage for road construction. When I finally inches up to the bottleneck, a 100 yard lane closure, it was a single excavator and no more than a half dozen workers, holding much of central Indiana hostage.
At last I'm settled in for the night in one of the countless, identical clusters of motels hanging off every interstate in the land.
There is no such thing as a "road trip" by interstate, only mere travel, as every road and gas station and motel looks alike. But, I'm not much interested in this part of America, and I'm hurrying through on the faster routes (except, of course, for those in Indiana).
I guess this place is called Plainfield, a suburb of Indianapolis. I hear planes going over and just saw a flight attendant check in so this community must serve the airport.
I've driven 1100 miles in two days but have just 250 left today to Toledo."

"The ponies have lots of grass now. We still have to find them a good home but, for now, they are quite happy where they are."
"The dogs got their beauty treatments yesterday.
Baths and brushed and scarves and even nails trimmed and Emma with nail polish to match her collar. The’re all smiles and smell good too."

FEELS LIKE SPRING
I went to Walgreen's, this morning, and what a delightful walk! This is the first day that we don't have those ice cold, gusty winds. Temperatures are comfortable and we're finally seeing some green on the trees. We might just have a summer after all!!
WINTER TEMPS OUT WEST
It's a cold morning in Wyoming. 18 degrees in Laramie, 36 in Worland. Button up your overcoat!
DONNIE IN ARKANSAS
Donnie woke up in Arkansas, this morning. I just checked their weather and it sounds like he's in for a warm and windy drive. Temps will be in the mid-80's in Arkansas today.

BIG BAND HISTORY MADE: MAY 7, 1941
I'm a year older than "Chattanooga Choo Choo"! That's right, folks. You might think Chattanooga Choo Choo has been around forever but, let it be known....I'VE BEEN AROUND EVEN LONGER!!
It was May 7, 1941 that the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded that classic song.

CABRITO DAYS
Today is ROAST LEG OF LAMB DAY which takes me back to my good old Cabrito days in Reynosa, Mexico.
For those of you who haven't been in that part of the world, Cabrito is king in Monterrey, Mexico and the state of Nuevo Leon.
The whole carcass of a goat kid is slowly cooked, on a spit, over a bed of glowing charcoal and seasoned with onion, garlic and green chilies.
John L., Katherine and I used to go across the border to Reynosa for this tasty delight about once a month. With some ice cold beer, to wash it down, and a mariachi band playing in the background, you think you've died and gone to heaven!
One wouldn't, ordinarily, think of lamb when you think of Mexico but it was Jewish immigrants who founded the city of Monterrey which, of course, is why lamb is a must in that city and the state its in.
NO STORMY WEATHER
Even though the forecast gives us an 80% chance, mainly before 10 A.M., for thunderstorms today, I don't see anything on consequence on the radar this morning. That's good. We don't need no more rain right now. The river is high enough, Mama!
DONNIES ROAD REPORT
Just a quick line from Donnie last night.
"At Bryant, Arkansas. Nothing of interest."
I'm guessing the Bryant Chamber of Commerce might beg to differ with him.

MORE WATER ON THE WAY
The last thing we need is MORE RAIN but there's a good chance we'll get more tonight.
The forecasters say isolated thunderstorms will become more numerous after midnight with a chance for HAIL AND LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN..
HIGH WATER AT RIVERSIDE PARK
I went to the park this morning. In the foreground you can see the tiny bit of the dock still above water. The rest is below the waves.
The river is running mighty full and fast. I wouldn't want to be out on it in a boat right now.

GETTING OLD? HEAD FOR SOUTH DAKOTA!
BANKRATE.COM says it may be cold in the winter but if you're planning to retire, there's no better place to be in the USA than SOUTH DAKOTA!
South Dakota has one of the highest health care rankings in the USA. It has a low cost of living and the sixth lowest crime rate in the country and you're going to LOVE the lower taxes.
After South Dakota comes Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming.
Notice two things. They're all in the middle of the country and they're all west of the Mississippi River.
I've said it many times and I'll say it again. Anyone living east of the Mississippi isn't really living. And, if you're going to live in the WEST you might as well live in the BEST state and we all know which state this is, don't we?
Thanks to Ron for sending me the article.

A ROAD IN BOLIVIA VS A ROAD IN TEXAS
Donnie traveled this road, in Bolivia, several times so the road from Austin to La Crosse won't be quite so exciting.
He's on the road, this morning, and heading our way.
He said, "I wish the I-35 route I'm on today were even 1/10th as exciting as the Bolivia route. I-35 out of Texas is about the dullest road on earth. That's, maybe, because I've done it so often.".

RICK AND ANGELA ARE WAITING FOR THE BABIES!
Angela says:
"The kittens are about four and a half weeks old in this picture. The Mom's name is Chloe.
We won't be getting the kittens until July 4th and we can't wait to see and pet them ourselves."
Chloe is retiring from the "baby business" and moving to a wonderful new home. The babies will have a home with Rick and Angela where they'll have some beautiful dogs to play with! I'll be anxious to hear how that turns out!

I GUESS TV IS JUST NOT MY THING
It was on May 6, 2004 that the final episode of "FRIENDS" was broadcast on NBC. I know it was one of the biggest sit-coms, ever, on TV. It made unknown actors huge stars and NBC gazillions of dollars.....and I never saw a single episode. Still have not seen a single episode and have no idea what the show was about.
I'm not sure but, I think, I may have totally missed 2004.

WET WEEK

BY THE IOWA SEA
Scanning the shelves at the library, yesterday, the name BLAIR caught my eye. Where have I heard that name before?
In this case, it was Joe Blair, the author of a memoir, "By the Iowa Sea". I pulled it off the shelves, read the first couple of pages and was hooked.
How an east coast guy with a motorcycle, a leather jacket and a desire to do nothing but travel ends up, 15 years later, with a wife, four kids, a pipefitters job and living on the banks of the Iowa River during a spring flood has all the elements of a great story. There's even a trip to Luther College to fix the air conditioning!
And what a writer this Blair guy is! I started researching him and he gets nothing but praise from some of the best book critics in the country.
This is a delight to read!
Have you got time for a good joke?
A girl was visiting her blonde friend, who had acquired two new dogs, and asked her what their names were.
The blonde responded by saying that one was named Rolex and one was named Timex.
Her friend said, ‘Whoever heard of someone naming dogs like that?’
‘HELLLOOOOO. . . ,’ answered the blonde. ‘They’re watch dogs’!
