HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICKEY!

One of my favorite country stars, MICKEY GILLEY celebrates his 77th birthday today.
I was just thinking, when you watch Mickey play the piano, you can sure tell that he and Jerry Lee Lewis as cousins.
And then, of course, there is the third cousin who took a different path but sure shows the resemblance to the other two.

COLD AND WET

Global temperatures are warmer now than they have been in the last 4,000 years......if you don't count La Crosse.

Every day I keep thinking it will get more "spring like" but, so far, I haven't seen any indication of that.  The frustrating thing about it is that we had a very mild winter...until it was time to "think spring"....NOW we get what we should have had in December.

Go figure.

LOUSY WEATHER AHEAD

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE REPORT:
THERE COULD BE A BRIEF PERIOD OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN LATE TONIGHT.

LIGHT ICING COULD RESULT ON UNTREATED ROADS...SIDEWALKS...
AND ELEVATED SURFACES.

A WINTRY MIX COULD CONTINUE SATURDAY MORNING NORTH OF THE I-94 CORRIDOR WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR LIGHT ICING.

MOST AREAS CAN EXPECT RAIN ON SATURDAY INTO SATURDAY EVENING. THIS RAIN, COUPLED WITH A MELTING SNOW PACK, COULD RESULT IN LOCALIZED FLOODING AS WELL AS ICE JAMS.

WHAT LIST?

OK.  Now we have a study that says, if old folks are given a list of 15 words and at the end of getting them they can't remember the first four their memory is heading for the exit.

If that's true, my memory is already out the door and into the next county.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

You can distort them later."
~Mark Twain~

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Micky Dolenz turns 68 today (no, I didn't spell "Micky" wrong).

You remember Micky.  He was the drummer and, sometimes, lead singer of the Monkees (no, I didn't spell Monkees wrong).

Since those Monkees days, Dolenz has done a long list of show biz things including disc jockey, recordings as a single and voice actor plus Monkees reunion gigs.  He got married, divorced and had four daughters.  He's been a busy guy!

OH, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY!

A sunny day with temperatures getting up to 40 degrees.  How's that for a great forecast!  Better get out and enjoy it because it's a one day thing.

Tonight it's freezing rain and sleet and tomorrow will bring rain and sleet followed by rain and snow Saturday night followed by rain and snow and wind on Sunday.  That, almost, sounds like the great plagues of Egypt.

I don't know what you people have done to bring on the wrath of the Gods.  It's surely not me who has pissed them off.

A NICE NOTE FROM DONNIE AND LINDA'S NEIGHBOR, BETTY

"Thank you for sharing our snapshot yesterday! I don't know how you did it, but you made us all seem younger.

It is always a pleasure when Gene and I run into Don and Linda. Truly they are our favourite neighbors. Fortunate, too, Gene and I were, that I was holding our little dog, Jasmine, when the shutter snapped. She made us look a little less scruffy by comparison! Ha!

For dog lovers, Jasmine is one of three original types of standard Dachshunds: Smooth-haired, Long-haired and Wire-haired. Our Jasmine is a Wire-haired Dachshund, "Brindle" color. Two of our three cats are larger than she. Purportedly, Wire-haired Dachshunds are the clowns of the breed, according to "The Dachshund Handbook", by Caroline Coile, PhD. And every creature in our household would certainly attest to that. Jasmine, like other pets we have, is a rescued dog, found at our local animal shelter in 2003."

HEAVYWEIGHT

They took my weight at the clinic.  I gained two pounds in the past six months.  I guess I'd better start walking two miles a day.

CONFIDENCE IS INCREASING ON THIS WEATHER FOR THE WEEKEND. AMOUNTS OF ICE AND RAIN AND THE MOST PROBABLE LOCATIONS COULD STILL CHANGE IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

DID YOU EVER SEE A HERD OF 1200 ELK?

Ron sent this article and amazing picture from the RAPID CITY JOURNAL.

Ron said, "I never have much luck seeing elk in our Black Hills but I guess you can if you go out early in the morning or later in the evening."

1200 elk is a lot of elk but there's a lot of wildlife in the BLACK HILLS OF SOUTH DAKOTA.  Not quite as much wildlife as there was when I lived there but that's another story altogether.

GOOD NEWS FROM THE DOCTOR

I have an appointment with my kidney doctor tomorrow morning but I got good news from him today.

"I am happy to report your results were with stable kidney function at 49%."

How long did Methuselah live?  I just may try to break his record.

LUNA SENDS LOVE

Bert sent a Valentine picture of Luna.  It's just a tiny picture and I couldn't make it bigger but it sure is cute!

LYNNE SENT A SNOW REPORT

We ended up with 10 inches of snow. Luckily, we have a guy two roads away who comes and plows the driveway. Bob just does the top section so the guy can back up to the garage and plow. It takes him two swipes and he cleans out our mailbox too. We used to do it ourselves but no more.

EVEN THE FACES ON MT. RUSHMORE AREN'T AGELESS

Donnie sent this photo of the Leave it to Beaver cast as they look today.  He says he thinks we look better than Beaver.  I say, THINK AGAIN!

Speaking of sitcoms, Donnie and Linda were out walking and ran into neighbors Betty and Gene.  If this doesn't look like the cast of a sitcom I don't know what does.

13 YEARS AGO TODAY

On March 6, 2000 we had a record high temperature of 74 degrees.  Can you imagine how fast this snow would melt on a day like that?

MORE SAD NEWS

I like good news but it's hard to find any today.

The latest bad news comes from USA TODAY.  Valerie Harper from the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" has terminal brain cancer with three months to live.

INTERESTING STATISTIC

Dubai International Airport now sees more passengers per year than JFK in New York.  Air traffic at Dubai has risen 77% in the past five years.

The world is changing.

IT'S OFFICIAL

Our government, such as it is, has officially notified officials that La Crosse is one of the airports that will have its air-traffic control tower shut down as of April 7.  From then on it will be up to the pilots to stay alert, on the radio, and work out the landing procedure's on their own.

Im guessing that with any hint of bad weather you can forget about flying out of the city unless Washington can get its act together which, of course, would require a miracle.

WILL IT NEVER END????

HERE WE GO AGAIN
The National Weather Service says there's a storm system on the west coast that will arrive here just in time for the weekend.

We're looking at SLEET AND ICE ACCUMULATION FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY .

For Saturday night and Sunday it will be MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINFALL which could lead to LOCALIZED FLOODING AND ICE JAMS ON THE RIVERS.  So, I ask myself.  Can it get any worse??  I suppose the answer is "yes".

A REPORT FROM LYNNE

So far we have 7" snow and it is still coming down. Great day to stay home and look out the windows. Beautiful on the trees and I don't mind snow at all when I don't have to go out of the house.

We lucked out for the weekend with Derrick and Jennifer coming. We attended basketball games in Deerfield and Milton. Her young nieces were playing. I surely wish we would have had girls competitive basketball between schools when I was growing up. I played every chance I had, mainly with the boys.

SNOW

TOTAL SNOWFALL IN LA CROSSE 6.4"

STORM UPDATE

The storm cancelled around 1200 flights.  Most of them were at Midway and O'Hare.

STOP THE SNOW!

GREETINGS FROM LA CROSSE

WHY ME?

So, I plow through the snow, one overshoe in front of the other, one step at a time.  It's so early, most of the sidewalks haven't been shoveled.

I get to the clinic, walk up to the desk and, with my last breath, I give the girl my name, she checks the computer screen and says......
"It looks like the doctor looked at your last lab tests and they were so good he decided he doesn't have to see you again until next fall.  They must have forgotten to send you the letter".

Yes, they must have forgot but walking 15 blocks in a snow storm is good exercise so no problem!

Actually, all was not lost.  While I was there, they did all the blood draws for the appointment with my nephrologist on Thursday so I won't have to go in so early.

THE DAY HAS ARRIVED

I'ts all relative, of course.  What's rich to us might not be all that rich to Bill Gates who, again, comes in #1 as the richest of them all with $66 Billion.

DOCTOR DAY

365 days in the year and I had to pick a day with a snow storm to go to the doctor.  Oh, well, I remember going to work, many times, in weather much worse than this.  The show must go on.

I see the oncologist this morning.  I love the doctor but dread these appointments because there are about five or six blood draws involved and it's no eating or drinking before I go in.  The eating part is no big deal but facing a day without morning coffee is right up there with walking on hot coals.

DRIVE TO WORK

I read an interesting item in USA TODAY this morning.  About 14% of the workers in Chicago have an hour or more commute to work every day.  That's each way.

It took me about an hour to get to work in Houston but a couple of people I worked with had a drive that was closer to two hours each way.  Of course, on the mornings or afternoons where there was backed up traffic, on the freeway, it could take longer.

CAT AND MOUSE

3rd STREET FOLLIES

An article in the La Crosse Tribune, this morning, convinces me that things haven't changed much on 3rd Street since my younger days of crazy frivolity.

Seems as though a young lady reported her boyfriend missing after he left the bar, they were in, to go outside to throw up.  He never returned.  After an extensive search, police found him side-tracked at the corner of 3rd and Pearl.

Oh yea!  Been there.  Done that!

FUNNY TWEETS

A bit irreverent but you gotta admit it's funny.

WHAT NEXT?

KOHLER now has a showerhead that includes a detachable Bluetooth speaker that pops into the center of the showerhead so that you can listen to music while you shower.

I've been able to shower for the past 72 years without music.  I think I can survive the few shower years I have left without it.  Personally, I actually prefer listening to Mozart when I'm dry.

BEER GARDENS

YAHOO! TRAVEL has a good article on America's Best Beer Gardens but there's not a single one in Wisconsin mentioned.  What's up with that??

RAIL: THE WAY TO GO

Apparently the American people have picked up on what European countries, Japan and China have known for a long time.  Travel by RAIL is the way to go

Rail travel, in the USA, has increased 55%since 1997.  That's a much bigger increase than travel by air or auto.  Travel by rail is the fastest growing mode of travel in the USA.

Unfortunately, a lot of the routes aren't making money.  Probably because there are those in government doing everything they can to make sure rail doesn't get an upper hand.

The oil companies have very deep pockets when it comes to campaign contributions and, unfortunately, what's best for a successful campaign comes before what's best for the country every time.

Here's an interesting article from the ARIZONA DAILY STAR on what's happening with AMTRAK these days.

The latest advisory from the National Weather Service:  THERE WILL BE SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS TO TRAVEL.  ESPECIALLY ON TUESDAY. TRAVEL WILL BECOME DANGEROUS TO IMPOSSIBLE IN MANY LOCATIONS.

The weather sucks wherever you go.  Rapid City is looking at 60 MPH wind gusts this afternoonSioux Falls will be fighting with freezing drizzle and rain.

Minneapolis/St. Paul is expecting freezing drizzle and heavy snow.

Janesville will get ice pellets today and heavy snow tomorrow.

HEALTH CARE REFORM

Here's a video you might want to watch.  It's HEALTH CARE REFORM EXPLAINED IN 9 MINUTES.

SNOW

I suppose the main topic of conversation, today, will be the snow.  It looks like this storm will give us a one-two punch.

The first round of snow will come this morning with one to three inches falling.  Then we'll get a break until late tonight with snow falling into tomorrow afternoon.  This second round will bring six to ten inches.

I thought I would be able to get through the entire winter without putting on my overshoes but I'm afraid I'll have to get them out of the closet tomorrow morning when I go to see the doctor.

QUOTES

I SAW IT ON TWITTER
This quote from Teddy Roosevelt is as relevant today as it was then.  Maybe more relevant.

TV

THE HISTORY OF THE VIKINGS PREMIERES TONIGHT (9 PM CENTRAL) ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL.

THE QUEEN

GET WELL SOON, YOUR MAJESTY.

I DON'T GET IT

We hear talk about cutting Social Security, cutting Medicare benefits, we're laying off thousands of government workers, our interstate system and bridges are crumbling from coast to coast.  Our schools are a mess and the judgement of many education experts is that kids in other countries are learning far more than our kids are.

Now, I read this morning, that our Secretary of State says we're going to give Egypt $190 million right now and $450 million over time because, he says, Egypt has "extreme needs".

I think we have all the "extreme needs" we can handle right here in the USA.  I don't see any need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to fly government officials all over the world looking for "extreme needs" somewhere else.

DONNIE DINES

Sounds like Donnie went gourmet for lunch.

"I carry a list of eateries, in the car, that I have seen recommended here or there.  With lots of time to kill I went in search for a couple.

I found a place that was nothing more than a neighborhood convenience store, and a rather shabby one, populated by a bunch of scruffy characters in many sizes and shapes.  The kitchen was an open corner behind a make-shift counter with hand lettered menu's.

Typically true to keeping Austin weird, the burger was excellent!  As advertised, all-natural, grass fed beef in a nicely crisp sourdough bun.  There was Heinz 57 and A-1 set out on the run-down tables which added nicely to the steak flavor.  All the class was in the food, none in the ambiance.

Just down the street I found "Lick", a designer ice cream shop featuring never before seen flavors.  I tried dark chocolate with sea salt and olive oil...delicious."

That ice cream sounds like it might be as "tasty" as lutefisk!

A JOKE FROM ROGER

A Norwegian and a German entered a chocolate store. As they were busy looking, the German stole 3 chocolate bars.

As they left the store, the German said to the Norwegian, "Man I'm the best thief, I stole 3 chocolate bars and no one saw me. You can't beat that."

The Norwegian replied: "You want to see something better? Let's go back to the shop and I'll show you real stealing."

So they went to the counter and the Norwegian said to the shopkeeper, "Do you want to see magic?" The shopkeeper replied, "Yes." The Norwegian said, "Give me one chocolate bar."

The shopkeeper gave him one, and he ate it. The Norwegian asked for a second bar, and he ate that as well. He asked for the third, and finished that one too.

The shopkeeper asked: "But where's the magic?" The Norwegian replied: "Check in my friend's pocket, and you'll find all three bars of chocolate." You just CAN'T beat a Norwegian!
