HAIL STORM!
We just had ONE HAIL OF A STORM move through this morning. I think this is just about the worst I've seen since I lived here.
The hail was beating on the windows so hard I couldn't hear anything else. Thankfully none are broken or cracked but it sure made a racket as the stones hit the air conditioner.
The roofs are all white, covered not by snow but HAIL STONES. The sky, literally, got as black as night.
I don't see any damage to cars in the parking lot but, from 5 floors up, it's hard to tell for sure.

TRAVEL NOTES
Donnie says, "It is now so costly to fly from Austin to La Crosse (Round trip is $600+) that it is nearly cheaper to drive, even with hotels and gas."
And, Ron tells me, "We leave our ship in Florida, this morning, and start heading home."
I can't remember where they were "floating from" but, I'm sure, we'll get a report when they get back.

I GUESS I NEED A HUNK A HUNK OF BURNING DESIRE
X-football coach Lou Holtz says, "If you're bored with life, if you don't get up every morning with a burning desire to do things, you don't have enough goals."
I think he's right. I don't have any goals and I haven't had a "burning desire to do things" since 1962.
ANOTHER DEATH IN THE FAMILY
I was so sorry to hear of the death of Dorothy's Mother.
My Mother used to say, "If we can make it through spring we'll be OK." We've lived through so many spring time deaths. The saddest time of all for death when the world is being reborn.

NO HIT ZONE?
Beginning June 2, the Gunderson Health Care Campus will be designated as a NO HIT ZONE.
Apparently they see so many instances where parents are hitting on their kids, kids are hitting on each other etc. that they thought this latest "security move" was necessary.
This is such a sad commentary on our society and our values. I guess, however, I shouldn't be surprised considering we live in a nation that has been in one kind of war or another nearly the entire 74 I have been on this planet. We seem to think the only way to address a problem is to kill it or get elected to congress so you can scream at each other like 10 year old children.
We may live in a "Christion country" but we don't even attempt to live according to the teaching of Jesus Christ. Instead of "loving thy neighbor", our answer to the non-stop violence and name calling that this country is drowning is to post "No Hit Zones".

Don't tell me you don't know who Johnny Sheffield was. If you're old enough...and we're talking REALLY old (like me) you'll remember him as "Boy" in the Tarzan movies.

TWO PRESIDENTS, DONNIE AND LINDA ALL IN THE SAME TOWN TODAY.
I started a new book today. "One Summer-America, 1927" is Bill Bryson's latest book. Bryson is a great author who was born in Iowa but has lived in England for many years.
I feel like I'm one of the lucky ones who lived through the 60's while I was in my 20's. It was the perfect age to experience one of our most exciting decades.
At the same time, I feel un-lucky that I missed the other decade that was the USA at its most exciting, the roaring 20's.
1927 had to have been a great year to be alive. Charles Lindbergh doing his solo flight across the Atlantic, Babe Ruth going for his home run record, President Calvin Coolidge spending the summer of that year in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Al Capone running Chicago and the first "talking picture, "The Jazz Singer" playing in New York and the beginning of events on Wall Street that led to the crash of '29.
That's a lot of stuff to cover in one book so I'd better start reading!

CUBA: The hot travel spot.
In the first 3 months of this year, around 173,550 U.S. citizens have visited Cuba. How are they getting there? Most people are flying from Canada.
Great for business in Canada, great for business in Cuba and our silly embargo is hurting us a lot more than it's hurting Cuba. Maybe we'll figure it out if we ever send the children home to play and get some real grown-ups in Congress.

While we're on the subject of roses, this is one of Rita's roses from 2011. I'm sure we'll see a similar display this summer.
It could be a bit warmer but lets not complain!

So much for "family treasures"!
I love watching Antiques Road Show on PBS and I heard the funniest line I've ever heard on the show last night.
A gentleman had brought in a "family heirloom" which, he said, had been in the family for as long as he could remember.
The appraiser told the collector what he knew about the antique item and then asked the gentleman if he'd like to know the value of the item.
The man said, "Yes, I'd like to know what it's worth for insurance purposes but, being a family heirloom, I would never consider selling it."
The appraiser said, "Would it surprise you if I told you it was worth $35,000.00?" The collector said, "Yes that would surprise me and the item is now for sale!"

Rita and I stayed in a grass hut like the one you see in the picture. A Kuna Indian guide paddled us "out to sea" in a canoe just like this one.
The canoe is a delightful experience near the shore in the calm waters. When you get away from the shore and head into waves as high as a house..."delightful" doesn't describe the feeling of terror.

A sort of sad note from Donnie.
"Our last day at the house, a bit sad."
"An nseasonably chilly, gray and damp day. As we drove out of the neighborhood we encountered three deer, a jackrabbit and a roadrunner all standing beside the road, looking at us...a tear-jerking farewell of the sweetest sort.
The day was complicated by a flat tire on my car, meaning two trips alone, in the morning, in Linda's car before she came along in the afternoon for a fast look and a token glass of champagne. Then, home to a new home."
My inbox contained a note from Lynne this morning.
She said Bethel Home has opened again so next Saturday she and Bob will go to visit her with Daniel and Jon.
"Mom said she feels weaker each day. The doctor said the weakness comes with congestive heart failure."
"Mom said she feels weaker each day. The doctor said the weakness comes with congestive heart failure."
Omaha native, Stew Magnuson has written a new book I'm on the LOOKOUT for.
The first in a series of books, coming out soon, is "A Journey Through Time down U.S. Route 83: The Dakotas".
The series will cover stories, along the highway, which starts in Westhope North Dakota and runs all the way down to Brownsville, Texas.
This first volume, of the three book series, features stories of Lawrence Welk, Lewis and Clark and Casey Tibbs among others.
The highway runs right down the center of South Dakota and I think Donnie has traversed quite a bit of that route in his travels.

I just opened the blinds and it's so good to look outside and not see any snow anywhere!!
It brings to mind the old Zen proverb, "Sitting quietly doing nothing, the spring comes and the grass grows by itself."
The snowbirds are coming home to roost.
They should be pulling into La Crosse some time today. I turned up the heat, for them, because I know they're not used to the cold weather!
How does 60 degrees sound?
With partly cloudy skies, the temperature should get up to 60 today. There's a 20% chance for rain late this afternoon but we can live with that. It might even wash what little snow is left away.
A history lesson from Rita.
"When we were young, the Holmen Locker Plant was owned by my Uncle Alfred and Aunt Esther Tabbert. Uncle Reuben Tabbert worked there and Zip Knutson, who lived next door to Grandma, was the butcher there.
