Rick and Rosey could share a birthday cake.
Rosey Grier of L.A. RAMS fame, back in the 60's, is still kickin' the old football at 80 today.
Stay away from France. Head to Brazil.
Lonely Planet has a couple of interesting lists. It's a travelers survey of the most unfriendly countries in the world and if you scroll down to the end you'll find a place to click for the friendliest countries in the world. You can click here for the full list or for the abbreviated version let me just say, there are a lot more smiling faces in Brazil than there are in France.
Here's a web page you may be interested in.
WKBT has set up a special web page, COPING WITH THE 2012 DROUGHT. Here's a link to that page.
I am exhausted!
I spent the whole night taking a test. The dream went on forever. I can't remember what the subject of the test was but it was something I knew nothing about and there were hundreds of questions....none of which I knew the answer to. You had to stay until you had answered all the questions.
I don't know how it ended. I still had pages to go when Thunder jumped on my face and wanted breakfast.
I gave him a big kiss. The little guy saved me from taking the rest of the test.

We got a nice little shower this morning.
Didn't really amount to much more than wetting the sidewalks but we might get more later in the day. We could use a lot more.
After so many hot, sunny days I'm really enjoying the clouds and cooler temperatures. Can't wait to get out and enjoy the fresh morning air.

A bit of Hollywood history.
You know those 50 foot letters, up on the Hollywood Hills that spell out "Hollywood"? Those were dedicated on July 13, 1923. The sign, originally, spelled out "HOLLYWOODLAND" but the "LAND" part was taken down in 1949.
Keep your fingers crossed. We need the rain!
30% CHANCE FOR THUNDERSTORMS
TODAY
50% CHANCE TOMORROW
I spotted this on Yahoo! News this morning.
Some people say this mixture will make your brown grass green again. Sounds goofy to me but what do I know?
Mix a can of beer, a can of Coke, 1/2 cup antibacterial dish washing liquid, 1/2 cup liquid ammonia, 1/2 cup mouthwash. Put the mixture in a 10 gallon sprayer attached to your garden hose and spray your lawn.
I'd have to see it to believe it. Who could even think up such a combination of ingredients?
DONNIE: We have long been putting soapy dish and bath water on the lawn, and it certainly does no harm, and probably does good. From now on I will also spit Coke and beer and mouthwash out there.

Willard needs to get the waders out.
"Flash flooding all over Houston. Heavy rain and lightening came through here about 6:15 this morning. This is when it is a "retired senior" perk that I don't have to go out in this. The freeways and feeder streets are a mess."
Here's an amazing fact.
Would you like to move to Manhattan? The average rent for a Manhattan apartment is $3,778 per month and the hardest apartment to find is a small one.
USA TODAY has an interesting article on hotel charges for "extras".
A lot of the "extras" were called "SERVICE" back in my hotel days. Now, I would call it "gouging". It seems to me that the bigger the corporate chain is, the less you're going to get without paying extra for it. "Service", like "etiquette", have become dirty words in American life. Read the USA TODAY article here.
Happy Simplicity Day!
Today's a day to enjoy the simple things in life. You know why we're not happy anymore? TOO MUCH STUFF.
I never thought I'd get tired of hot and sunny weather but I have!
Another sunny day with a high near 90. Enough is enough! Looks like there's a chance for some weekend rain. The Saturday forecast calls for a 50% chance for rain. We sure could use it.

TOO MUCH HEAT. NOT ENOUGH RAIN.
I was noticing that all the lawns, that aren't watered every day, have all turned brown already. I wish we were getting some of the rain that Texas has been getting this summer. Last year it was the other way around. They were wishing they had some of our rain.
I bought some watermelon at Co-op yesterday and it was the sweetest, juiciest, best tasting watermelon I've had in years so I had to go back and get more this afternoon.
Watermelon is on my "good" list so I take advantage of it. Cantaloupe is on my "bad" list.
COMMENT FROM DONNIE
"At our State Department retirement seminar, a nutritionist went on at great length contending that watermelon is about the healthiest thing one can eat. Of course, it's 99% water."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has made it official.
The past 12 months have been the warmest 12 months ever recorded in the United States since record-taking started in 1895. And, that doesn't take into account the blistering hot July we've had around the country.
American Airlines is taking a look at who they might want to merge with.
There's a story about it in USA TODAY.
MOST of the airlines we grew up with are gone now and it won't be long before they'll ALL be gone.
Speaking of gone, most of my hair is gone, teeth are gone and what isn't gone is going fast. And they call these my "golden years"? Think again, you snot nosed 20 year olds.
Every time I look at these young college kids with the long faces, here in the building, I have the urge to "explain" it to them. If they think life is tough now, they ain't seen nothin' yet.
The heat is taking its toll on the fish.
The river water has gotten so hot that the fish are suffocating. Read the full story HERE in the La Crosse Tribune.
Another hot and dry day in La Crosse.
A lot of sun with a high around 90 is going to give the A/C another workout today. Our next chance for rain in La Crosse will be Friday night.
Here's a bit of Wisconsin history.
It was on July 11, 1921 that Wisconsin became the first state in the nation to guarantee women the same legal privileges, rights and protections as men. Governor John J. Blain signed the bill into law in Madison.

Here's a neat bit of trivia.
There are more women than men on the U.S. Olympic team this year. First time that's ever happened.
Donnie sent a comment on rain.
"We got 2+ inches of rain in a half hour yesterday. That's the first rain in two months and our reservoirs are still only half full."
After two weeks, my hair is clean again.
I don't have enough for it to be bouncy and manageable but it is clean and that's good enough for me.
The bandages is gone and the ear looks pretty good. Good enough, anyway. At this time in my life, pretty ears aren't real high on my wish list.
Travel and Leisure has created a list of the worlds best hotels...
Right up there with the best of the best is the Triple Creek Ranch in Darby, Montana. Looks like a really great place if you have a really big billfold. Rooms are $750 to $950 a night.
Another one on the list is a bit closer to home. The Penunsula Hotel in Chicago is one of the worlds best, according to Travel and Leisure, and a night there will run $395 to $525.
CHECK OUT THE FULL LIST HERE.

According to Willard, Houston is getting plenty of rain this year.
"We have had more rain this year then ALL of 2011....27 + inches so far. A year ago, at this time, we had 9.75 total...no drought here!"
DONNIE AND LINDA ARE NO STRANGERS TO DROUGHT
We're, now, getting acquainted with drought too. 42 Wisconsin counties, including La Crosse, are now under a state of drought emergency.
We've been without any decent rains since the 20th of June and the extreme heat has only added to the misery of the dry conditions. The corn and soybean crops have been, especially, hit hard from the lack of water.
PEOPLE WHO DIE FROM KIDNEY FAILURE CATCH MY ATTENTION
Ernest Borgnine passed away from kidney failure but he lived to 95. Another recent death, from kidney failure, was Dr. Joseph Kirsner, from Chicago, who was a noted physician in the field of digestive system disorders. He lived to the age of 102. With that in mind, you might have to put up with me for a long, long, long time yet!

WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR COOLER WEATHER?
YOU WON'T HEAR A BETTER JOKE TODAY
Be sure to attend the right service:
One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little alex standing in the foyer of the church staring at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side.
The pastor walked up, stood beside the six year old boy and said, quietly, "Good morning Alex". "Good morning Pastor", he replied, still focused on the plaque. "Pastor, what is this?
The pastor said, "Well, son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service."
Soberly, they just stood together staring at the plaque. Finally, little Alex's voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked, "Which service, the 8:30 or the 11:00?"

DEAR ABBY ADMITTED SHE WAS AT A LOSS TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:
Dear Abby,
"What can I do about all the sex, nudity and violence on my VCR?"
Dear Abby,
I joined the Navy to see the world. I've seen it. Now how do I get out?
Dear Abby,
My forty year old son has been paying a psychiatrist $50.00 an hour every week for two and a half years. He must be crazy.
Dear Abby,
I was married to Bill for three months and I didn't know he drank until one night he came home sober.
Dear Abby,
My mother is mean and short tempered I think she is going through mental pause.
Dear Abby,
You told some woman whose husband had lost all interest in sex to send him to a doctor. Well, my husband lost all interest in sex and he is a doctor. Now what do I do?

THE EXCITEMENT IS BUILDING
I am happy to report this is the last day of the bandages and We will unveil the new ear tomorrow. Tomorrow will also be the first morning in TWO WEEKS that I'll be able to shampoo my hair.
TOO HOT TO FEST
I think this was the first year, since I've been back here, that I didn't make it to Riverfest. I wasn't the only one who was kept away by the heat. Riverfest revenue was down 40% this year due to the miserably high temperatures.
ANOTHER BIRTHDAY TODAY
Kathy isn't the only one to add another candle today. Ed Ames (of the Ames Brothers) is still alive and kickin' at 85.
THERE'S A GREAT OLD PHOTO IN THE LA CROSSE TRIBUNE TODAY
It's a photo, taken in 1939 (the summer before I was born) which shows the area just south of Riverside Park where the new LHI Insurance campus is nowadays. What a change! CLICK HERE FOR ARTICLE AND PICTURE.
THE BIRTHDAY GIRL RETURNS
According to Rita, Carl and Kathy return to La Crosse today after their family visits in Great Falls and Superior.

ANOTHER GREAT ONE GONE
Who could forget Ernest Borgnine? Sad to hear of his death at the age of 95. There was "Marty" on the big screen in the 50's, for which he won an Oscar, and "McHale's Navy" on the little screen in the 60's and the long list of other great films he appeared in during his long career.
WHAT LOVELY GARDENS IN RAPID CITY
I got some pretty pictures from Ron and Penny today.
Ron Said, "Penny and I took the garden walk, today, and thought you might enjoy seeing the garden photos we took."

IN CASE YOU MISSED THIS ON YAHOO!
I ran across this article on where the big bucks the Hollywood studios are raking in are coming from. It isn't coming from the theaters anymore! It leads me to wonder if there could come a time when the movie theaters are no more? Nothing is forever, you know. Not even me so you'd better enjoy me while you can. READ THE ARTICLE HERE.
STUCK AT THE GATE
How about the USAir aircraft that got stuck at the gate at Reagan International in Washington yesterday? The tarmac got so hot it started to get soft and one of the wheels held the plane in place when the tow vehicle tried to push it back from the gate. Took three hours to get unstuck! I'll bet that was a cabin full of happy campers!
HERE'S A GREAT EXERCISE FOR MY KIND OF PEOPLE
THIS IS NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS ...
Pass to all 50 yrs and older.
Cardiovascular Exercise
The older we get the more important it is to incorporate exercise into our daily routine. This is necessary to maintain cardiovascular health and maintain muscle mass.
If you're over 50, you might want to take it easy at first, then do more repetitions as you become more proficient and build stamina. Warning: It may be too strenuous for some.
Always consult your doctor before starting any exercise program!
Scroll Down.
NOW SCROLL UP..
That's enough for the first day. Great job.
Have a beer as your reward.

A COUPLE OF OLD CROONERS ARE CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY TODAY
Jerry Vale celebrates 80 years and Steve Lawrence hits 77.
I WAS JUST LOOKING OVER THE CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR TODAY
I can't decide between the horseshoe tournament at the Hog Wild Bar in Onalaska or the belly dancing lessons at the Moonlight Dance Studios in La Crosse.
I'll bet Roger, Carl and I could give a whole new meaning to a belly dancing class.
A PERFECT DAY TO BE OUTSIDE
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with a high of 83. Conditions will be much the same tomorrow. Carl and Kathy get home, from their latest trip, and they're bringing the better weather with them.
