A SUNDAY TO REMEMBER!

WHAT A HORSE!!!!

INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY

WARMER WEATHER IS ON THE WAY--NOW WE NEED SOME DRYER WEATHER TO GO WITH IT

IF THIS ARTICLE IS CORRECT, I MAY LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO SEE WAL-MART GO DOWN THE TOILET WHERE IT BELONGS

You know I can't resist sharing this article about the serious problems Wal-Mart is finding itself in.

READ IT HERE

I SALUTE THE STUDENT TRAVEL AGENCY!

The travel agency does just what the name implies.  They arrange educational trips for students and they have announced a great new policy.

They will NO LONGER PROVIDE TRIPS TO PLACES THAT ARE INVOLVED IN THE UNETHICAL MISTREATMENT OF ANIMALS.

The banned attractions, on the list, include SEA WORLD IN ORLANDO AND SAN DIEGO as well as destinations that include elephant rides and Tiger Temple in Thailand.

THEY GET A GOLD STAR FROM ME

INTERESTING NOTE FROM DUANE

"The paper says Rapid City and La Crosse are up for 'best little city in the USA'.  The article says La Crosse has the Mississippi River, the bluffs and beer.  Rapid City has the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore and a park that runs through the entire city along Rapid Creek.".

TRAVELS WITH DONNIE

If you could enlarge this poor cell-phone snap, you'd see the Yankton skyline(!) atop the bluff above the Missouri River at the rear of this shot.

This was the view from my dining table at a fish shop across the river in Nebraska. Photo of Tom Brokaw on wall, thanking owner for a fine evening.

Almost stopped for the night at Freeman Country Inn, but it smelled funny. Instead, in Yankton I pay twice as much, but at least this motel is brand new.

Though it was bitter cold this morning, I reached Marion area by mid-afternoon and played the 9-hole course between Marion and Parker--the Par-Mar Club. I did not go into Marion.

SOUNDS LIKE A NORWEGIAN JOKE

A chicken walks into the library and walks up to the librarian and says, "Book."

The librarian says, "You want a book?"

"Book."

"Any book?"

"Book."

So the librarian gives the chicken a novel and off it goes.

But an hour later the chicken comes back and says, "Book-book."

The librarian says, "Now you want two books?"

"Book-book."

So she gives the chicken two more novels and it leaves but it comes back later.

"Book-book-book." "Three books?"

"Book-book-book."

So the librarian gives the chicken three books, but she decides she'll follow the chicken and find out what's going on.

The chicken goes down the alley, and out of town and towards the woods and into the woods and down to the river and down to the swamp and there is a bullfrog.

The chicken sets the books down by him and he looks at them and he says,

I'M GLAD TO SEE PENNY'S IS MAKING A COME BACK.

SALES UP 6% in the first quarter of the year and that's the second quarter of sales increase they've had.

I always liked shopping at Penny's.  Hope they stay around for a long time.

Meanwhile WAL-MART SALES ARE THE WEAKEST THEY'VE BEEN IN FIVE YEARS.  I love hearing that!

NO FREEZE IN LA CROSSE

But, at 4:00 AM, it was 28 IN SPARTA.  That's a hard freeze we shouldn't be having at this time of year.

No doubt about it.  This is not a normal spring.  It will be a lot warmer today than it was yesterday, with an AFTERNOON HIGH IN THE LOW 60'S but that's still 10 degrees colder than it should be for the 17th of May.

A LITTLE POTTY HUMOR NEVER HURT ANYONE

HERE'S ONE I HADN'T HEARD BEFORE

Having shot a moose, Ole and Sven began dragging it by the tail to their pickup.  On the way they were stopped by the game warden.

"Let me see your hunting licenses", he said.  When he saw that all was in order he asked if he could give them a little advice.

"Ya, Sure, you betcha" the hunters said (have you noticed?  That's what Norwegians always say.)

"Well, guys, I think you would find it a lot easier to be draggin' the moose by the horns instead of the tail."

"Ya.  OK.  Tanks" they said.

After about five minutes Ole said to Sven, "Boy, it sure is a lot easier to be draggin' the moose by the horns and not the tail."

"Ya.  You're right.", says Sven, "but have you noticed dat vee are gettin' furder and furder away from the truck?"

PAUL SAYS HE CAN'T REMEMBER ANYTHING THAT FUNNY

C'mon, Paul.  No matter how you look at it, a table full of Solberg's is always funny.

IT TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE

I MAY HAVE TO TRY THIS

SUNSHINE!!!!!!

THE SUN CAME OUT AROUND NOON.  The good news is that it's supposed to be SUNNY ALL WEEKEND.  Temperatures will still be well below normal but a bit warmer than the past few days.  I'll take every "bit warmer" that we can get!!

DONNIE LAMENTS

"32 degrees in Chamberlain, South Dakota this morning...MIDDLE OF MAY....and I came here to golf!!!"

CARL...IN A BETTER LIGHT

I showed that awful picture of Carl shoveling food into his mouth yesterday.  To be fair, I should show a much better picture, of him, I got a bit later.

OIL, OIL EVERYWHERE

The 10,000 gallons of crude oil that, accidently, spilled onto the streets of Los Angeles, near Glendale, should be fine mess to clean up today.

That was probably another good reason for Donnie and Linda to get rid of their old place.  The oil pipeline that was put in right next to their property was certainly something that was not going to increase the value of their land.

We all love our oil but prefer it in someone else's back yard.

HOW LONG CAN THIS AWFUL WEATHER GO ON??

Another day of clouds and chilly weather with temperatures not getting out of the 50's.  We should see some sun this weekend but temperatures won't get warmer than the mid-60's.  Hopefully, we might get to 70 by Tuesday.

DONNIE IS, SAFELY, IN SOUTH DAKOTA THIS MORNING

"Reached Chamberlain by 1:30 (Thursday afternoon).  Cold all the way.  Mid 40's and a painful north wind.  I got out of the car only briefly.

By mid-Dakota the sky had cleared but the temp never reached 60.

I visited the South Dakota Hall of Fame and an excellent Indian Museum at St. Joseph Indian School.

The Lewis and Clark "Interpretive Center" doesn't open, for the season until Saturday.

Early evening, I was the only diner in the only café on Main Street but I got a delicious Steak.

Both Mitchell and Chamberlain look far more "developed" and busy than I remember them ever being.  Several new and nice lodges on the river in Chamberlain.

I came over here to find an "exotic" golf course above Pierre, but it will be too cold to play.  All I can do tomorrow is drive up there, take a look, then turn around and head south for home."

BEGINNING TODAY, OUR CASS STREET KWIK TRIP WILL OPEN AT 5:00 AM

They were opening at 4:00 AM but decided it would be safer to move it back another hour for safety concerns.

An armed man entered the store demanding cash back in April in that 4 to 5 AM time period.  4 is still a pretty quiet time around town (unless you're at my apartment) but by 5:00 it gets too busy for anyone to try a holdup.  Or, at least, that's the hope.

That's OK with me.  I may be up, at that hour, but I won't be going out anywhere.

LEAVE THE CAR AT HOME TODAY!

STILL TOO COLD

The weatherman says we'll have a sunny weekend but temperatures will still be quite cold for late May.

THIS IS A REALLY SAD, AND UNFORTUNATELY, A VERY REAL THREAT TO THE BANANA

NOTE TO DONNIE: HERE'S AN IDEA FOR A LITTLE FUN ON YOUR WAY BACK TO TEXAS

WHATEVER YOU SAY JOAN

HEY! WHAT'S THIS ABOUT THE THEFT OF $600,000 FROM JOEL OSTEEN'S OFFICE SAFE??

And, that's just the take from ONE WEEKEND of services!  If the Good Book is right and the "Poor shall inherit the earth", Joel baby  is screwed.....BIG TIME!

CAN YOU SEE ME IN ONE OF THESE OUTFITS THIS SUMMER? IF YOU CAN YOU'VE HAD TOO MUCH TO DRINK.

BUTTON UP YOUR OVERCOAT!

WE'RE NOT THE ONLY COLD SPOT

IT'S COLD ALL THE WAY TO THE GULF.

ANGELINA JOLIE WANTS TO MAKE A, YET ANOTHER, VERSION OF THE CLEOPATRA STORY

BIG PROBLEM: They can't find a director that wants to do it.  Perhaps the directors are old enough to remember the last version of "Cleopatra".  Or, maybe they're thinking that Angelina is a pretty, and very nice, lady but let's be honest.  She's no Liz Taylor.

This looks sillier now than it did in 1963.

MID-MAY AND IT STILL FEELS LIKE MID OCTOBER

WE CELEBRATED THE HOLIDAY LAST NIGHT WITH THE COUSIN GATHERING

TRINI LOPEZ TURNS 77 TODAY

THE COUSINS WENT OUT TO EAT LAST NIGHT

I keep hoping that some year they'll behave while they're out in public but I don't think that will ever happen.
Carl was shoveling it in even before Roger finished saying the prayer.
Donnie was eating with both hands....
While Dorothy bowed her head in shame and pretended she was with another party.

FLOOD WARNING

The National Weather Service has posted a FLOOD WARNING FOR THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER AT LA CROSSE until Thursday, May 22.

At 8:00 PM this evening the stage was at 11.5 feet.  Flood stage is 12.0 feet.

Minor flooding is expected and Pettibone Park will be flooded and access to the north end of the shore acres development will be impacted by flooding..

IT JUST AIN'T FAIR!

I pass this along because Los Angeles was close to 100 this afternoon and I'm still walking around with a coat on and freezing my ass off.

Considering my long life of "clean living" you wouldn't think I'd have to live under these conditions in my old age but, like I say, "It just ain't fair.

WHAT A WONDERFUL MORNING AT LAKE NESHONIC AND WEST SALEM

Donnie and I spent the morning driving around Lake Neshonic.  We stopped so he could hit some golf balls into the lake.

Back in town we discovered a delightfully colorful Mexican restaurant right downtown in the building where the dry goods store and grocery store used to be.  Authentic Mexican fare that was very good.

They've done an excellent job decorating the place, leaving just enough of the old dry good store so us old timers can still remember how it used to be.

It was a fun day.

DUANE LIKES GREAT HARVEST TOO

"We have a Great Harvest in Rapid city too.  I get breads there.".

TREATS ON WHEELS IN AUSTIN

Donnie and Linda are lucky, living in Austin, because there's always someplace new to eat.  And, the town is FULL of these eateries on wheels that roam all over the city.  If you're hungry you don't have to go far for food.

TWO TENS FOR A FIVE

IT'S NOT GONNA GET ANY BETTER

DEAR GOD, WE'RE FREEZING DOWN HERE

There's only a 10% chance for rain today but it's going to be another cold day with temperatures mostly in the 50's.  By the way, we won't get warmer than the 50's until the weekend.

DONNIE IS WEARING ME OUT

Good thing Donnie is departing
tomorrow.  We're having lots of fun but it's not easy for an old man like me to keep up!  We're off to West Salem today and there will be a stop at Linda's Bakery!

PIGGY'S NIGHT!

The cousins are going out to eat at Piggy's tonight.  That's a pretty fancy place for a table full of Norwegians but we'll try to behave.

DONNIE AND I MADE A GREAT DISCOVERY YESTERDAY

Great Harvest Bread Company is at 58 Copeland Avenue, just up the street from Festival, and they have the best fresh baked bread I've ever tasted.

They offer free samples and I tried a big slice of CHEDDAR GARLIC and I could have eaten a whole loaf!

Some of the other breads include Honey whole wheat Dakota, Popeye Cinnamon Raisin, Harvest White and many more.

Sweet treats include Salted Caramel Cookies, Berry Cream Cheese Scones, Lemon Bars, Banana muffins and the list goes on.

And, there are sandwiches to kill for.  How about HAM AND SWISS. All natural deli meat with Swiss cheese, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, salt and pepper.

There are plenty other sandwiches to choose from.

Everything made fresh from their kitchen.  I loved it and so did Donnie.  I took muffins home and Donnie took a great big sandwich back to his hotel room for dinner tonight.

If you haven't been to this place, try it out soon!

GOT THE FLOWERS ON THE GRAVE YESTERDAY. WE'RE READY FOR MEMORIAL DAY

TODAY IS NATIONAL CHICKEN DANCE DAY

We're talking chicken, dancing and a whole lot of corn!

GRAND STAY....GREAT FOOD!

Donnie is staying at the Grand Stay while he's in La Crosse this time.  Their rooms are, actually, mini-suites with bedroom, living/office area and a small kitchen.  I was really impressed with the accommodations.

Last night he was making himself right at home.

He wrote, "I'm heating Manhattan Clam Chowder I found at Fiesta.  Very hard to find Manhattan Clam Chowder.  The red stuff as opposed to the common white creamy New England Clam chowder).

Finding the Chowder and Entermanns doughnuts, this visit has been a real grocery bonanza.

We paid a visit to Uncle Bob yesterday afternoon.  It's been a while since I've seen him so I was glad to get over there.  He was looking really good and in very good spirits.

I'M JUST SAYING....

I know it's a miserable spring but it's a lot better than this!

BUSY SEASON FOR THE BLACK HILLS

GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS

BAD NEWS: Quite a bit cooler today.
GOOD NEWS: No rain today.

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?

That cute little kid in HOME ALONE and just look at him now!

LOVE THIS

I THINK WE CAN FORGET SUMMER THIS YEAR

The weatherman says flooding will continue along portions of the Mississippi and PATCHY FROST WILL BE POSSIBLE  in sheltered cold prone areas through next Monday.

TODAY'S THE DAY FOR JUMPING FROGS

This holiday gets it's inspiration from an early Mark Twain short story.

STEVEN COLBERT is 50 today and STEVIE WONDER is celebrating his 64 birthday.

THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI AND NOT QUITE SO MIGHTY DONNIE

SUNSET ON THE MISSISSIPPI LAST NIGHT

DINNER AT CEDAR CREEK

Rita, Roger, Donnie and I enjoyed dinner at Cedar Creek last night.

EARTHQUAKE IN PANAMA

I'm glad Donnie isn't there this morning.

FROST WATCH

Can you believe this?  Almost June and we're still worrying about FROST!

WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME WITH RITA AND ROGER LAST NIGHT!

We went up to the house so Donnie could see the new floor they put in and the other improvements.

Then over to Cedar Creek for dinner.  Great meal and good company.

When we got back to La Crosse we stopped off at Riverside Park where Donnie sat and contemplated the sunset!

LOOKS LIKE SUMMER IN CHICAGO

They were enjoying 80 degrees at 1:00 PM.

THE EXCITMENT NEVER ENDS WHEN DONNIE'S IN TOWN

We went out and toured the mall this afternoon.  That's the first time I've been out there since the last time he was here and that was two years ago.

"The Mall" seems to be going the way of most of the other stuff from the 60's, 70's and 80's.  The malls and I peaked together and we're going down for the count together.

More than 400 malls have closed in the past couple of years across the country and there are more, like me, on their last legs these days.  Donnie says Austin has had some closings and I know that some of the Houston malls have closed since I lived there.

I CAN WAIT

A HOLE IN THE CROTCH CALLS FOR QUICK ACTION

Donnie and I went to ShopKo and I bought a new pair of jeans this afternoon.  The stitching in the crotch had busted open and I figured it would be cheaper to buy a new pair of jeans rather than pay the fine for indecent exposure.

A FUN GRAPH FROM TIME MAGAZINE

How popular is your name and in what year was it most popular?  CLICK HERE TO READ THE ARTICLE AND USE THE GRAPH

The name "Douglas" peaked in 1957 and has been going down, in popularity, ever since.  My name has, pretty much, taken the same road as my life has.

A WORD FROM DONNIE

A favorite Frank Lloyd Wright remark is on display down there in Spring Green:

"Early in my life I faced a choice, to be honestly arrogant or hypocritically humble.  I chose the first, and have never regretted my decision."

NOTE:  According to BLOGGER, this post is post # 11,111 since I started publishing this blog.

GREAT POSTER

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BASEBALLS MOST COLORFUL LEGEND

We love you, YOGI BERRA, on your 89th birthday today.

I watched this video, again, this morning and laughed so hard the tears were running down my cheeks.

What a great way to start the day.  Thank You, Yogi!

IT'S LIMERICK DAY THEY SAY

Here's one for you.

There was a young lady whose chin,
resembled the point of a pin;
So she had it made sharp,
and purchased a harp,
and played several tunes with her chin.

RAIN, RAIN, RAIN

It was raining when I got up but not the "heavy downpours" they were forecasting so that's good.

The only plans Donnie and I have made, so far, is breakfast at Fayze's  this morning.  Rain won't interfere with that plan.  The rain should be gone by mid-morning so I don't think the whole day will be a complete wash out.
