THE LEAVES MAY STILL BE GREEN BUT.....

SUMMER HAS LEFT THE COULEE
I was sitting by the open window reading my book and I had to get up and close it. The breeze blowing in was too cold for comfort. The forecast makes it clear there will be no more need for the air conditioner for many, many months to come. I'll go to the basement, get the cover, and put in on tomorrow.

HOUSTON GOT SOME RAIN TODAY!

Willard said, "At Last! A steady, soaking downpour."

Alas, I didn't see any rain over Dripping Springs.

GOOD WINE YEAR IN WISCONSIN

If your liquor store carries Wisconsin wines be on the lookout for a bottle of 2011 vintage. Wisconsin grape growers say the weather, this summer, was perfect for the grapes and it will be a bumper crop this year.

WILLARDS DAY

"Going to make a summertime dish today (since we are still having summer). Alaska Red Sockeye Salmon, chilled, with chopped onions and marinated in cider vinegar. A holdover from childhood. Mother used to make it on hot summer days."

GOOD APPLEFEST WEATHER TODAY

Applefest got off to a good start.

With sunshine and temperatures in the low 60's, this should be perfect for spending the day in La Crescent. Tomorrow, however, not so good. There's an 80% chance for showers which could come in handy for extinguishing all those candles on Rita's birthday cake.

I JUST CHECKED OUT THE NEW GOOGLE FLIGHT SEARCH FEATURE

It's fast and easy to use and it comes up with some good fares.  I found a $388 ticket from Minneapolis to Austin, Tx but you have to fly through ORD to get it that low.
I found a cheaper flight, on Continental Airlines from Minneapolis, direct, to Houston InterContinental for $278.

These days, those are great fares.  If you're planning a trip, you might want to check out the site.

THE GOOD SLEEPING WEATHER IS BACK

Both Thunder and I slept in until almost 4:00 AM.  That's half the day gone for us.  There's nothing like a good nights sleep.  Dorothy Wordsworth said it better than I could.

The days are cold, the nights are long
The North wind sings a doleful song
Then hush again upon my breast
All merry things are now at rest.

I USED TO LAUGH AT OLD PEOPLE

Now, it's not so funny.

Willard needed to put eye drops in Buddy's eyes.  It comes in a bottle that you squeeze the drops out after you take off the cap.  He squeezed and sqeezed but couldn't see any drops going in.  Of course, he's blind as a bad so figured it was his eyes and he just couldn't see those little drops coming out.

He reached for the cap so he could put the bottle away.  Where could it be?  He looked everywhere.  No cap.

Guess what.  He never took the cap off in the first place.  If you're as old as we are, I'm sure you can relate.

BRRRR

I went to the store, this morning, and I wore a sweater but that wasn't enough.  The wind, that was chilly yesterday, has become downright COLD today.  I was getting a bit tired of the heat but I was hoping for a more gradual change from hot to cold.

MORE JUNK TV

Dr. Oz telling his audience that canned apple juice contains disturbing amounts of arsenic.  The FDA says it's nonsense.  There's ORGANIC arsenic in apple juice which you'll also find in water, food and soil.  The FDA has been testing apple juice for years and says not to worry!

CLEAN HAIR AND GODLINESS

TWO NUNS WERE SHOPPING AT A 7-11 STORE. AS
THEY PASSED BY THE BEER COOLER, ONE NUN SAID TO THE OTHER, " WOULDN'T A NICE COOL BEER OR TWO TASTE WONDERFUL ON A HOT SUMMER EVENING?"

THE SECOND NUN ANSWERED, "INDEED IT WOULD,
SISTER, BUT I WOULD NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE BUYING BEER, SINCE I AM CERTAIN IT WOULD CAUSE A SCENE AT THE CHECKOUT STAND."

"I CAN HANDLE THAT WITHOUT A PROBLEM" THE
OTHER NUN REPLIED, AND SHE PICKED UP A SIX-PACK AND HEADED FOR THE CHECK-OUT.

THE CASHIER HAD A SURPRISED LOOK ON HIS FACE WHEN THE TWO NUNS ARRIVED WITH A SIX-PACK OF BEER. "WE USE BEER FOR WASHING OUR HAIR" THE NUN SAID, "BACK AT OUR CONVENT, WE CALL IT CATHOLIC SHAMPOO.

WITHOUT BLINKING AN EYE, THE CASHIER REACHED UNDER THE COUNTER, PULLED OUT A PACKAGE OF PRETZEL STICKS, AND PLACED THEM IN THE BAG WITH THE BEER.

HE LOOKED THE NUN STRAIGHT IN THE EYE, SMILED, AND SAID: "THE CURLERS ARE ON THE HOUSE."

THIS IS SUCH A FASCINATING STORY

ANYBODY KNOW MILDRED?

Two elderly women were out driving in a large car--both could barely see over the dashboard.  As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through.
The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself 'I must be losing it.  I could have sworn we just went through a red light.'  After a few more minutes, they came to another intersection and the light was red.  Again, they went right through.  The woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it.  She was getting nervous.

At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was red and they  went on through.  So, she turned to the other woman and said, “Mildred, did you know that we just ran through three red lights in a row?  You could have killed us both!”

Mildred turned to her and said, “Oh, damn, am I driving?”

DONNIE RECALLS HOLMBY HILLS

Holmby Hills, the Sinatra neighborhood in LA you feature today, is right next to UCLA.  I would occasionally take just two clubs out of the bag and walk over to the par-3 golf course in Holmby.  There, in possibly the most expensive and exclusive neighborhood in America, I could play golf for $3.  That's $3!  The closest golf course to me in Dripping Springs charges $50...and there isn't a movie star to be seen.

The Holmby course rarely had anyone on it but me, and the only people I saw were literally dozens of nannies in the park, caring for the babies of the resident billionaires.

Ah, those were the days!

HEY! THIS IS NATIONAL GUACAMOLE DAY

DONNIE REPORTS:

Hays County, where they live, has renewed the countywide burn ban for another 60 days.  The Keetch-Byram Drought Index, which measures the dryness of the soil lists a TOTAL LACK OF MOISTURE IN THE SOIL at 800.  Hays County soil now stands at 786.

I WAS JUST THINKING

Donnie and Linda have to get out of dry Texas and move back to L.A.  I've got the perfect house for them.  Frank Sinatra's old home is for sale in the Holmby Hills section of town for 23.5 million.  It has everything they need.  Four bedrooms with three more for servants in the employees wing.  There's also an apartment for the chauffeur.  Their neighbors will be Danny DiVito and Rhea Pearlman.

CONGRATULATIONS MADISON!!

Men's Health Magazine has named Madison the most educated city in America!
The magazine says the average household, in Madison, has more degrees than a thermometer.

FROM THE OPINION PAGE

Darrell Ehrlick has a commentary in the La Crosse Tribune, this morning, that I hope everyone will read.  NANCY LACKS ANY SENSE OF GRACE concerns the dead baby found floating in the Mississippi near La Crosse.  It was covered by Nancy Grace on her new show on some half assed cable network.  Grace is one of the most repulsive loudmouths on TV, of which there are many.  Ehrlick thinks her show was a disgrace and I couldn't agree more.

Again, I repeat, if you depend on American television as your main source for news you have absolutely no idea what's going on in the world.  Mainly because the networks spend so many millions on finding a pretty face with a good hairdo to read the news, they have no money left to hire competent reporters and writers to produce the stories.  It's easier, and cheaper, to get audience and sell Kotex with crazed lunatics screaming at each other and call that news and, sadly, the American public lets them get away with it.

SOME OVERNIGHT LOWS

Onalaska got down to 36, Sparta hit 29 and Viroqua had a low of 33.

THE TEMPERATURE AT THE ROCHESTER AIRPORT DROPPED TO 31 DEGREES SHORTLY AFTER 6 AM THIS MORNING SETTNG A NEW RECORD FOR THIS DATE.  THE PRIOR RECORD WAS 32 DEGREES SET IN 2007.

DID YOU KNOW THAT HENRY FORD WANTED EVERYONE TO FLY???

Yup~ he was thinking about a "family airplane" as his next project after the Model T.  Click here MENTALFLOSS to read the story.

SOME GOOD ADVICE

To avoid it eat right! Make sure you get your daily dose of fruit and veggies.

Take your vitamins and bump up your vitamin C.

Get plenty of exercise because it builds your immune system.

Walk for at least an hour a day, go for a swim,

take the stairs instead of the elevator, etc.

Wash your hands often.
If you can't, keep a bottle of antibacterial stuff around.

Get lots of fresh air.
Open doors and windows whenever possible.

Try to eliminate as much stress from your life as you can.

Get plenty of rest.

OR
Take the doctor's approach.
Think about it...
When you go for a flu jab, what do they do first?
They clean your arm with alcohol...
Why?

Because Alcohol KILLS GERMS.
So...

I walk to the pub. (exercise)
I put lime in my vodka...(fruit)
Celery in my Bloody Mary (veggies)
Drink outdoors on the patio..(fresh air)
Tell rude jokes and laugh....(eliminate stress)
Then I pass out. (rest)

The way I see it...

If you keep your alcohol levels up,
flu germs can't get you!
As my grandmother always said,
'A shot in the glass
is better than one in the butt!

I'M ALREADY STARTING TO HAVE DAYS LIKE THIS

Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades.  Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards.

One day, they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, “Now don't get mad at me.  I know we've been friends for a long time, but I just can't think of your name!  I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it.  Please tell me what your name is.”

Her friend glared at her for at least three minutes; she just stared and glared at her.  Finally she said, “How soon do you need                         to know?”

THE FIRST FREEZE IS THE WORST

I saw a tweet from International Falls this morning.  I suppose it should be no surprise that they had freezing temps.

They set a record yesterday when the temperature dropped to 27.  That beat the old record of 28 which was set in 1964.

I'm sure International Falls is a nice place to visit but I sure wouldn't want to live there.  La Crosse is as cold as I want to get.  Actually, to be honest, La Crosse is quite a bit colder than I want to get.

The WeatherChannel reported that both Duluth and Grand Forks had their first official freeze this morning.

WARM WORLAND

I see Rick and Angela still have summer weather in Worland.  76 today.  81 tomorrow.

TODAYS BIRTHDAYS

Marco Polo was born on the 15th of September in 1254.  Other September 15th birthdays include Agatha Christie in 1890, Roy Acuff in 1903 and Prince Harry in 1984.  I'll bet Prince Harry won't get as many birthday cards as Rita does.

FROSTY NIGHTS

We could see more frost tonight and early tomorrow morning, mostly in areas along and northeast of Interstate 94.

At 2:00 A.M., this morning, the the temperature had dropped to 32 in Sparta and 30 at Rhinelander.

VERNON COUNTY FAIR IN FULL SWING

It started yesterday and runs through the weekend.

I'll bet Aunt Wilda has been thinking of "fairs gone by".  This used to be a busy time for her and Uncle Jim.

HERE'S A THOUGHT.....

THE KIDNEY DISEASE NUMBERS KEEP GROWING

A new report from Australia, today, says the number of "end stage kidney disease" patients, which is when the disease progresses to the point where you need dialysis or transplant, will increase 80% by 2020.

A TRIVIA TIDBIT

I'm really having fun reading "Anything Goes" a biography of the Roaring 20's by Lucy Moore.  It's just filled with lots of fun trivia.

Here's one for you.  Who owned the first private swimming pool in Los Angeles?

Give up?

It was Mary Pickford.

SWEATER WEATHER

I walked over to Walgreen's for a few things this afternoon and I was glad I wore Uncle Jim's sweater.  The sun is warm but there was a gusty wind that felt like it was coming right off an iceberg.  I think it was Mother Natures way of saying the long hot summer is over!

MORE BAD NEWS FROM DONNIE

"Texas' June-through-August average of 86.8 degrees
was the hottest summer for any state in U.S. history,
beating a record set by Oklahoma (85.2) in 1934,
according to theNational Weather Service."*

Austin area is nearing 80 days over 100 degrees, and still counting.  Not a drop of rain since July 19, and very little before that, barely 1/3 the annual average to date.  And the La Nina drought will continue for another year, through winter and through next summer!

I fear we have long-since passed the time to relocate; already the many "For Sale" signs around us have sat ignored for years.  Anything sold is sold at a growing loss.  You won't be seeing Austin on many more of those "best places" lists.

IT COULD HAPPEN!

His request approved, the CNN News  photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight.

He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport.

Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger.

He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut and shouted, 'Let's go'.

The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off.

Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, 'Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.'

'Why?' asked the pilot.

'Because I'm a photographer for CNN, he responded, 'and I need to get some close up shots.'

The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered, 'So, what you're telling me, is. . . You're NOT my flight instructor?'

DONNIE & LINDA HAVE A FUN SATURDAY PLANNED

Gladys' son, Jeff and wife Kathy will be in Austin this weekend.  They'll be going out to dinner with Donnie and Linda Saturday night.

They haven't decided where to eat but Jeff and Kathy are staying at FOUR SEASONS and, having worked for Four Seasons, I can guarantee unforgettable dining right at the hotel.  Of course, Four Seasons Hotels are not for folks on a budget and dinner for four would be about the same price as a small house sells for in Wisconsin so they may want to try another venue.

GUESS WHAT RITA FOUND IN THE GARDEN!

"So, there I was, cleaning the garden on the north side of the house and I kept finding odd, round, white balls.  Roger said, jokingly, that they were, probably, snake eggs.  I threw it up in the air, ran in the house and went on the internet.  They were snake eggs. Eeeewwwww!!

I haven't found them all but Donnie says he captured 10 deer in this one picture taken in his back yard.

WATCH YOUR PASSWORD

Just read on Twitter that a phishing attack of Hotmail showed that the most used password is 12345.

I'M SHIVERING!

I went to Festival this morning and was sorry I didn't wear a jacket.  The wind was really cold while I was waiting for the bus.  It's quite a shock to the system going from 90 degree weather to 60 degree weather in one day.

ANYTHING GOES

I'm reading a fun book, "Anything Goes" by Lucy Moore.  It's a biography of the Roaring 20's with a lot of Chicago history.  One thing I found hard to even imagine was that, by the mid-20's, Chicago had over 10,000 bars and nightclubs with live music.  It's probably just as well I missed that era.  I'm not sure I could have survived it.

RAPID CITY IS GETTING A TASTE OF THE COLD TOO

Duane said, "Wednesdays high will only be around 48 with rain!  House was chilly this morning".

COUNTING THE DAYS

Rita stopped by to drop coupons off.  She's grinning from ear to ear these days.  I see that "soon to retire" gleam in her eye.

WHAT ARE YOU?

If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills,

If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time,

If you can overlook when people take things out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

If you can face the world without lies and deceit,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

Then...........

.....you are probably a dog.

GREAT BUS AD

THE CHILL IS ON!

Yesterdays high was 88 but, I'm guessing, it will be a long time before we see a day that warm again.  With the arrival of our first cold front of the season, today's high will be about 20 degrees cooler at 67.  Tonight's low will be around 48 and tomorrow night it will drop into the upper 30's for our coolest night in months.  The last time I mentioned cold weather, on this blog, was June 23 when I was complaining about our chilly spring.  After a couple of hot months, a little chill will feel good again.

Better hang a jacket by the door.

DONNIE WRITES FROM TEXAS

We are back up to 100 degrees.  There seems to be a creeping sense of death in the air.  The trees are already losing leaves, and the woods look gaunt and bare long before their usual time--it's like looking through a skeleton.  A wind sock on the back porch floats silently on the hot breezes, like a melancholy farewell wave.  Ten familiar, hungry deer come and go all through the days, hoping for our contributions.  Linda feeds them each day at 5:00 p.m., and if she is late the deer stand in the yard and stare at the house, detecting our movements within.  The cracks across our concrete driveway and floors are ever more pronounced.  Even the pipeline work, heavy industrial noises, seems muffled and distant, in a cloud of dust.  Silence and wind and cracks and dust--it all feels like a terrifying slow-motion dream, an atmospheric movie graveyard.

ATTENTION FELLOW TURKEYS!

RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
TURKEY SEASON
STARTS SATURDAY

THE END IS NEAR

Another very warm day will give way to much cooler weather, around here, for the rest of the week.  Slowly, but surely, winter is on its way back.

La Nina is also back so what does that mean?  More drought for Texas and lots of snow around here!  Make sure the snow blower is in good working order before the first flake flies!

REMEMBER THESE ADS?

WHY DO PEOPLE FALL FOR THIS STUFF?

A new scam going around.  Folks getting calls from someone who says they're from Xcel Energy and that they forgot to sign their monthly payment check.  Then the caller asks for a credit card number so the bill can be paid.  I have a hard time believing anyone can be that gullible but, unfortunately, they are.

So far, I've been lucky since I got my cell phone.  No junk calls at all.  I like it like that.
