NO FREEZE IN LA CROSSE

But, at 4:00 AM, it was 28 IN SPARTA.  That's a hard freeze we shouldn't be having at this time of year.

 

No doubt about it.  This is not a normal spring.  It will be a lot warmer today than it was yesterday, with an AFTERNOON HIGH IN THE LOW 60'S but that's still 10 degrees colder than it should be for the 17th of May.

FROST WATCH

Can you believe this?  Almost June and we're still worrying about FROST!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed we won't have a late freeze.

The bushes by the back door are turning green.  The grass is starting to green up.  A late freeze, now, would be a sad event.

With all the Norwegians around here you'd think there would be enough hot air to prevent that from happening.

CHILLY IN TEXAS THIS MORNING

Both Houston and Austin in the 30's.  There's a freeze warning in effect.  Austin was at 35 at 6 A.M.  Hopefully it won't go any lower and freeze the plants.

WHAT A GREAT DAY!
With sunshine and temperatures pushing 65, it's a far cry from what it was like 20 years ago today.

This is the 20th anniversary of the Great Halloween Blizzard.

According to the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE:

During the evening of November 1st, arctic air moved into the region, changing the precipitation to all snow. The snow continued until midday on November 2nd. 6 to 10" fell across Winona and Houston counties in southeast Minnesota, and La Crosse county in southwest Wisconsin. Meanwhile, 3 to 6" of snow fell across the remainder of southeast Minnesota, portions of western Wisconsin, and a small portion of northeast Iowa. These amounts are small in comparison to the snowfall from Red Wing, MN northward to the Duluth, MN area. This winter storm dropped 28.4" of snow on the Twin Cities (single storm record for the metropolitan record) while Duluth received 36.9" of snow (the largest single storm total in MN history).
Wind speeds of 30 to 50 mph, and gusts to 60 mph on November 1st and 2nd, created blizzard conditions across eastern South Dakota, Minnesota, western Iowa, and extreme western Wisconsin. This storm closed schools, businesses, bridges, and public transportation systems for several days. Clean up was hindered by numerous accidents and abandoned vehicles.

At least 20 people died in Minnesota due to traffic accidents or heart attacks from digging out after the storm. In addition, two Wisconsin hunters died when their boat was capsized in Lake Onalaska during the storm.

FROSTY NIGHTS

We could see more frost tonight and early tomorrow morning, mostly in areas along and northeast of Interstate 94.

At 2:00 A.M., this morning, the the temperature had dropped to 32 in Sparta and 30 at Rhinelander.

* TEMPS: LOWS TONIGHT ARE EXPECTED TO DROP INTO THE LOWER TO MIDDLE 30S PRODUCING SCATTERED FROST ACROSS MUCH OF THE AREA LATER TONIGHT.

* IMPACTS: ANNUAL FLOWERS AND VEGETABLES LIKE IMPATIENS AND TOMATOES.OR HOUSEPLANTS THAT HAVE BEEN SUMMERED OUTDOORS COULD BE DAMAGED OR KILLED BY THE POTENTIAL FROST AND COLD TEMPS.

As the fall season approaches, the first frost across the area will soon be here as well. In fact, with the abrupt change to Autumn-like conditions expected today and continuing through the rest of this week, patchy frost is possible across much of the area Wednesday night and mainly across interior Wisconsin, especially north and east of La Crosse, Thursday night.
