WESTERN HEAT
I'll bet Rick and Angela have the A/C on full blast. I see it's 93 in Worland this afternoon.
Bonnie and Bill are cookin' with 109 in Las Vegas.
SMART KIDS
I'm betting you'll eventually see this flashlight in stores and this 15 year old will end up with a lot of money.

A hiker who tried to climb up the face of Grandad Bluff will have to pay a fine of $290.00 after getting stuck about half way up and not knowing how to get up or down.
Firefighters came to the rescue and got the 22 year old woman back on the ground.
You would think someone that old would have brains enough not to try such a stunt but I guess common sense is not a gift everyone has.

HOT DOGS
Hot Dog sales have been falling off the last few years. How can this be? I thought hot dogs were as American as apple pie.
You've heard the joke about the hot dog vender and the Dalai Lama haven't you?
The Dalai Lama walks up to a vendor who is selling hamburgers and says, "I want a hot dog with everything."
The vendor hands him one and says, "Four bucks."
The Dalai Lama gives him a $5 and waits for his change but the vendor ignores him.
The Dalai Lama finally asks, "Where's my change?"
The burger vendor replies, "Change only comes from within."

TODAY'S WEATHER
Another crappy day in the neighborhood. The National Weather Service says we can expect isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and early evening. Some could come with half inch hail and wind gusts to 35 MPH. They add that a few funnel clouds may occur but none are expected to touch the ground.

FLOODS
Houston County really took a beating from the flooding last week-end. The damage total, so far, is up to $5.8 million.
SWAT TEAMS
Remember the SWAT teams and police that came rushing through Donnie and Linda's neighborhood with sirens blaring? Well, Donnie finally saw an article in the paper that gave details.
Apparently, one of the neighbors arrived home and noticed several items missing and he thought the robber was still in the house when he called police. That's what happened in, what the paper called, an "affluent neighborhood".
Donnie says:
"I learned three things. (1) There is such a thing as reverse 911 that allows law enforcement to contact citizens about a problem. (2) That our neighborhood is "affluent". (3) Affluence attracts burglars (but I guess I already knew that).
I thought we were far enough into the wilds that it wasn't worth a burglar's trouble to rough it through the woods. I guess we'll have to start locking our doors when we leave home."
KEY WEST
I guess I missed this when I was living in Key West and I'm sorry I did. Donnie will like this because he likes cemeteries and Carl and Kathy will like it because they, like me, love Key West. They'll also like seeing Sloppy Joe's grave. I spent many, many hours in his bar and Carl and Kathy have sipped a few there too.
ELVIS AUCTION
This will get 'em "all shook up". The Cadillac station wagon that Elvis owned will be sold, at auction, at the Mecum Auction Company in Santa Monica, California on July 26 and 27. I'll bet they'll get a hunk a hunk of cash for it!
SAFE WATER
Why are we always on the bottom of the list?
The National Resources Defense Council reports that the latest samples taken at Wisconsin beaches along Lake Superior and Lake Michigan are the second worst in the nation for complying with national health standards. Samples were taken from almost 3,000 beaches in the U.S.

MALWARE AND MAIL
After learning that Rita and Roger's computer problems were caused by a malware virus, I looked up some figures which I found interesting.
In the first 3 months of this year, 97.4 billion spam emails were sent out each day and 973 million malware emails were sent out each day.
It's lots of fun to forward all those jokes, cartoons and other stuff that you get from friends but it's best to remember that every time you open one you're taking a big chance that you may be infecting your computer.
FLOODING
There's only a 20% chance for thunderstorms this afternoon which leaves us with an 80% chance for some sun today which I am more than ready for.
Alas, rain or no rain, the flooding continues along the Kickapoo River in Crawford county and on the Mississippi River from Prairie du Chien to Dubuque.
REMEMBERING ROUTE 66
It was on June 27, 1985 that officials decertified ROUTE 66 and the most famous highway in the country passed into history.
Here's a neat video that travels that route one more time and takes us from Chicago to L.A. in 3 minutes.
COMPUTER WORKING AGAIN
Daniel got Rita and Roger's computer working again. They picked up a malware program, somewhere along the way, that was causing the problem.
By the way, a tip from Daniel. Microsoft Security Essentials is the only security software program you should be running. It is the very best there is and it's absolutely free. Just Goggle it and download.

Rita and Roger's computer is slowly coming back to life. Cousin Daniel will perform surgery this evening. In the meantime they're "out of the loop", so to speak.
NORTH TO ALASKA
Ever since Lynne sent the Alaska picture, I've had this damn song running through my head.
TODAY'S WEATHER
If the forecast is right, I guess I'd better do what I gotta do this morning.
The National Weather Service says more thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening that could produce large hail and damaging winds along with heavy rains.
WATCH WHAT YOU FORWARD!
There's an email going around about drinking water and taking aspirin and heart attacks. It was forwarded to me this morning.
My old radio days training taught me not to believe ANYTHING at face value. Confirm it with, at least 2 other sources FIRST. Alas..that's something the television media pays no attention to, in this country, anymore and the newspapers aren't much better.
In any event, I did some checking on this email and found that it DID NOT COME FROM MAYO CLINIC and, while some of the information is somewhat true, other parts of the information are actually HARMFUL.
Again, I caution you. If you get emails like this, delete them and don't send them on to others. Unfortunately, there are a lot of very gullible people in this world that will believe anything they're told. Personally, I've learned in my long life of hard knocks not to believe a damn thing anybody tells me until I can find some backup that confirms it's true.
TODAY'S WEATHER
There's a 50% chance for rain today. Keep your fingers crossed we don't get it. The last thing we need is more rain.
They predicted thunderstorms for last night but, thankfully, they missed us. I did see rain south of us from Cedar Rapids to Madison. It looked like Bob and Lynne were getting some. I know that they don't need it either.

SAME STORY, NIGHT AFTER NIGHT
We had another downpour in the early morning hours, this morning. I just don't think we can take much more of this. From what I read in the paper it sounds like the flooding in Houston County is really serious. Officials estimate the flood damage will cost, at least, $2 million. Some places got as much as 14 inches of rain over the weekend.
Paul and Dorothy are in Colorado. I hope they find their place O.K. when they get home.
The National Weather Service says another round of storms, late this afternoon and evening, could produce another 1 to 4 inches of rain between Interstates 80 and 90.
This has become a pretty serious situation around here.

BOB AND LYNNE GOT BACK HOME SAFE AND SOUND
Lynne wrote, "We had an easy drive back. Not much traffic. I dosed off a few times. Luckily, Bob didn't as he was driving.
We had some rain along the way and it's trying to rain here too.
Derrick and Jennifer came last weekend and planted our gardens as they knew I couldn't do it this year. The flower colors are awesome!"

WILL THE RAIN NEVER END?
We sure timed our Viroqua trip perfectly. I wasn't home more than a half hour and it started to rain.
The forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms tonight and, again, tomorrow.
I think just about everyone is totally tired of the rain that falls day after day after day. It was sad to see so many fields still under huge lakes of water. There won't be any knee high corn on the 4th of July this year!
Roger says a lot of the farmers are planting soy beans because it's just too late to plant corn now.

A NICE DAY IN VIROQUA
What a joy to spend the day with Bob and Lynne, Rita and Roger, Uncle Bob and Aunt Wilda at the house which has been sold. The new owners will move in June 1.
This will be a busy month for Bob and Lynne getting everything moved out and get the cleaning done for the new owners to move in.
We'll all miss going there. It was a lovely home.
DONNIE JUST SENT THIS
This is the best cat video I've ever seen. The cat looks just like Thunder but I guarantee, Thunder would never have even thought about putting his head under that running water.
The longer you watch this, the funnier it gets.

TODAY IS NATIONAL PRALINE DAY
I had forgotten all about those delightful confections that Mother used to make. Of course, I can't eat them any more but I still remember how good they were.
SWAT TEAM INVADES DRIPPING SPRINGS
Donnie reported, "I was pulling out of our neighborhood just as the first two police cars went by. On my way to the golf range and over the next 20 minutes I counted 14 police vehicles headed our way, including three unmarked cars and one SWAT vehicle. Will we ever get the story?"
All the police had to say was that they were on the scene of "a suspicious circumstances incident."
What on earth could be suspicious about Donnie hitting a few balls on the golf range? Have we become so paranoid that even these dimpled orbs are now considered "weapons of mass destruction"? (Which the press and politicians think is a neat phrase for a bunch of bad-ass bombs.)
Donnie's story reminds me of Rita waiting in the car for me when I ran into Festival the other day. When I came out she said she heard sirens coming from all over the downtown area. I told her not to worry. The sirens are shrieking up and down the streets morning, noon and night and you never find out what the big emergency was. I swear, I hear more sirens in La Crosse in one week than I ever heard in Houston. It's like being in the middle of an episode of "COPS".
VIROQUA WINE
As long as we're going to Viroqua today, I thought I'd share this short video on the great wines that come from this part of the world.
WE PICKED THE RIGHT DAY TO GO TO VIROQUA
There's rain in the forecast but, if we get any, it will most likely be late this afternoon and the chance is only 40%. The next day without any rain in the forecast is Thursday so if you have outside chores this week, that's the day to plan for it.
YES, WE'VE HAD A LOT OF RAIN BUT.......
It was on this day in 1946 that Mellen, Wisconsin got 11.72 inches of rain. That's the Wisconsin record for the most rain in a 24 hour period. Mellen is way up in northern Wisconsin between Hayward and Ironwood.

Of course, this is not something you'd find on the diet for a kidney patient but, I thought, I'd just like to taste one or two kernels. Then I thought, "I'll bet this is one of those things that you can't stop eating after you start." I guess I'd better pass it up.

STORMS, STORMS AND MORE STORMS ON THE WAY
It was another stormy night filled with thunder and lightening. One bolt came down, only a few blocks from here, with a deafening bang that set off all the car alarms outside and brought me from a deep sleep to full attention.
It's all quiet now but there's another round on the way for this afternoon and tonight that could, again, produce heavy rain. The National Weather service says we can expect the possibility of more road closures, flooded basements, rising rivers and evacuations.
The Mississippi River, here in La Crosse, was at 8.3 feet yesterday morning and, with more rain to come, the forecast calls for a possible flood stage by next weekend. Bankfull stage is 10 feet.
