THAT BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 78 SET IN 1894.
THAT BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 78 SET IN 1894.
If the article I was just reading is right, newspapers will be history before you know it.
Newspaper advertising is half what it was in 2005 and a study by USC Annenberg School concludes that most U.S. daily newspapers will be gone in five years.
Donnie and Linda survived yesterdays yard work but they're paying for it today.
"Mighty stiff and sore but still some sod to lay today. It will be weeks before we get the soil and stones distributed."
I read some interesting hummingbird facts this morning.
There are 343 species of hummingbirds in the western hemisphere making them the second largest family of birds. And, they can move at speeds up to 30 MPH!
That little guy, on the left, was arriving at Donnie and Linda's feeder.
When I saw this I was glad to be as far south as I am.
The folks in Anchorage, Alaska are hoping they get 3.3 more inches of snow. If they do get it, they'll break the record for a winter snowfall of 132.6 inches! THEY CAN HAVE IT!
Perfect parade weather today!
The weatherman promises a sunny sky with temperatures near 80, again, today. That should bring a good crowd out for the ST. PATRICKS DAY PARADE which starts at noon from Riverside Park and moves up Main Street.
The RECORD HIGH FOR THIS DATE is 78 which was set in 1894. Will we break that record today? There's a good chance of it and there's also a good chance that we could set another record. This could become the warmest March ever recorded in La Crosse.

IMPORTANT HEALTH MESSAGE
As I was lying in bed, watching the clouds roll by and pondering the problems of the world,
realized I don't really give a rat's ass. It's the tortoise life for me.
If walking was good for your health the postman would be immortal.
A whale swims all day, eats only fish, drinks water and, yet, is fat.
A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years.
A tortoise doesn't run, in fact, he doesn't do anything and he lives 450 years.
And, you tell me to exercise? I don't think so.
I'm retired. Go around me.

Would you believe a guy sneezes and 1400 customers lose power?
Yes, it actually happened in Winona! Read it here in the La Crosse Tribune.
Mark your calendar for the WISCONSIN READY tornado awareness drill.
The tornado awareness excercise, for both Wisconsin and Minnesota, will begin at 1:00 PM on April 19. This will be a full scale drill with radio and tv announcements and warning sirens. CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE INFORMATION.
It's Apple-mania!
At one store in downtown Tokyo, this morning, there were 450 people lined up to buy the new iPad. At my age, the only "pad" I'm going to line up for is the heating pad.
When you hit 70, your idea of a "hot time" is putting a heating pad on your aching back.

Have you heard about this "PINK SLIME" beef product?
It's a new one on me but, according to the BBC, (ARTICLE HERE) it's off the menu at school lunch rooms. I would hope so! It sounds AWFUL!
Passing along a tip from CREATE tv.
You're safe in planting very hardy vegetables up to six weeks before the average frost-free date in your area.
There are a couple of cable channels I really like. One is CREATEtv CHECK IT OUT HERE and the other one is ME TV FIND THEIR SCHEDULE HERE.
MEtv has all the great old shows, from the 50's through the 80's, like Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Hogan's Heros, etc. It's great fun to watch those old shows again and it sure beats the "not so reality" shows you have to sleep through these days.

I didn't think it was all that warm yesterday but we broke another record.
The temperature hit 71 degrees at 4:57 PM yesterday afternoon in La Crosse. That beat the old record of 68 set in 1995.
And that's not all. The low temperature, yesterday morning, was 44 degrees. That tied the previous record warm minimum temperature of 44 set in 1898.
1898 is the year the first automobile was sold (March 24th) and the U.S. Assay Office opened in Deadwood (April 20).

I like what I see in the paper this morning.
Regularly scheduled bus service will begin, in July, for area counties. I may just take the bus up to Viroqua to visit Aunt Wilda. Or, maybe, spend an afternoon in Prairie du Chien. The fares sure sound reasonable. CLICK HERE TO READ THE STORY IN THE LA CROSSE TRIBUNE.
The St. Patrick's Day Parade is Saturday at noon on Main Street.
I've never been to the ST. PATRICKS DAY PARADE because the weather is usually cold and miserable but this year is a whole different story. The forecast says it will be partly sunny with a high near 80 on Saturday. That's what I call parade weather!
It kicks off at Riverside Park at noon, and marches up Main Street. I may just have to put on something green and head down there tomorrow.
I love this quote.
"Retreat, hell! We're just advancing in another direction."
General Paton

Another "spring like" day.
If the fog burns off early enough we could see a high of 78 today. That's, almost, beyond spring and into summer! I don't want to make Roger nervous but, with the mild winter we've had, do you suppose we'll have a HOT, HOT summer?
Rita makes it official.
"It's here! Crocus are up, robins are everywhere, dogs are running down the road with walkers and bikers. Spring is definitely here."

This was one of the highlights of my trip to visit Donnie when he was in Los Angeles.
This cemetary was close to where Donnie lived so we spent an hour, or so, visiting the graves. It's a great attraction that a lot of people miss when they visit L.A.
Good news from Rita.
She's still missing the teeth but the swelling has gone down and, apparently, the infection is gone.
LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!
I walked over to Kwik Trip to get my morning Glazers and, coming back, I spotted this bush just filled with buds! He, apparently, didn't see the warning that last freeze, in this part of the world, is still a month away. I'm hoping the bush knows more than the Weather Service.
GOOD IDEA! I HOPE IT WORKS.
Folks over 75 might get a break at airport security checks in the near future. They're going to test a new program at Chicago O'Hare, Orlando, Denver and Portland that will allow the older folks to keep their shoes and light jackets on and they will be exempt from the pat down. It will be interesting to see how it goes.
A NOTE FROM DONNIE
"Just finished the biography of George Kennan. He started thinking about death at age 70. He lived another 31 years."
George Kennan was ambassador to the Soviet Union in the '50's and ambassador to Yugoslavia in the '60's. He once said, "The best thing we can do if we want the Russians to let us be Americans is to let the Russians be Russian."

APPARENTLY, THE "RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS" COMES AT A HEAVY PRICE.
I was reading, in the paper, this morning, that in the past three weeks in Washington state, 2 young children have been killed and 1 has been seriously wounded by adults leaving guns lying around.
"Balance" is the secret to a good life and, in America, we don't seem to understand the need to balance "our rights" with "our obligations". We're so busy defending ouselves from the "evil without" we forget about defending ourselves from the evil within.
NOT QUITE SO WARM BUT ANOTHER NICE DAY AHEAD.
After the morning fog burns off, we should see sunny skies with a high near 70. Considering that our normal high, for this time of year, is 44, that would put us 26 degrees above normal today!
MIKE LOVE OF THE BEACH BOYS CELEBRATES HIS 71st BIRTHDAY TODAY.
IT'S BUZZARD DAY IN HINKLEY, OHIO
I have been aware of the buzzards return to Hinkley for many years but never, really, knew the history of the event so I looked it up this morning. This is some interesting stuff! CLICK HERE TO READ ALL ABOUT IT.
The picture isn't showing a Hinkley buzzard. This is the buzzard that got lost and ended up at Donnie and Linda's house.

IT'S STILL TOO EARLY TO PLANT
Early Summer Warmth Into Next Week
Record warmth is possible nearly every day into early next week as temperatures rise to readings more typical of mid to late-May.
In addition, given the unprecedented forecast warmth, there is a chance to approach or exceed the all-time warmest March at La Crosse, WI and Rochester, MN.
Despite the very warm conditions, we are far from our average last freeze. For La Crosse, the average last freeze is around April 26. Meanwhile, the average last freeze for Rochester is around May 7. With the average freeze date well over a month away, planting is not advised.

RECORD BREAKER IN LA CROSSE
FROM NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 75 DEGREES WAS SET AT LA CROSSE TODAY. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 68 SET IN 1990.
THIS IS CARL'S CONTRIBUTION TO TODAYS DISCUSSION
I pointed to two old drunks sitting across the bar from us and told my friend "That's us in 10 years".
He said "That's a mirror, stupid".

THE NUMBERS DON'T LOOK GOOD
Money may be tight where you are but it's tighter here. The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics is reporting that Wisconsin lost 12,500 last year. That's more jobs lost here than any other state in the country.
TOO DRY LAST YEAR...TOO WET THIS YEAR...IS IT EVER "JUST RIGHT"?
DONNIE REPORTS:
It is a measure of how surprisingly wet things are here, so far this year, that our sod delivery has been postponed, indefinitely. The ground at south Texas sod farms is is too wet to harvest. So we stand by, on yard work.
Last month I stained half the back porch with sun-protector, but can't finish yet because of the damp conditions. But the delays are far better than the alternative, more drought.

OH! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY!
I walked over to Walgreen's to pick up pills. Wore the lightest jacket I have and it was too warm! Hard to believe in the middle of March.
It's so nice, I have to get out again. After lunch, I'll walk to the park in shirt sleeves.

ANOTHER SURE SIGN OF SPRING
The servers have laced up their roller skates and RUDY'S DRIVE IN has opened, for the season, about two weeks ahead of schedule because of the warm weather.
SPRING! Of all the words in the english language, that's my favorite.

MY SPRING FEVER HAS GONE INTO OVERDRIVE
My kind of day! Warm and windy. I suppose a lot of people would be turned off by the windy part but, if you've spent a good deal of your life in western South Dakota and deep south Texas, if you don't have wind you don't have any weather at all!
They say our high will be around 80. I'm a bit more comfortable at 85 but 80 will do me just fine.

HEY! HAVE I GOT A DEAL FOR YOU!
We've got "kin" in WYOMING so this story about an upcoming auction caught my eye. It's at BUFORD, Wyoming, the highest town on Interstate 80 between California and New York. And, that's not all that makes Buford interesting.
Located between Cheyenne and Laramie, the town has a population of ONE and that one gentleman is retiring and moving out.
The town comes with a good parcel of land, gas station, convenience store and a 3 bedroom home.
It also comes with some of the meanest, coldest, windiest winters in the USA. So mean that the Interstate gets closed down during the worst of the storms. But, hey! The Wild West ain't for no sissys.
The auction starts at noon on April 5. Opening bid $100,000.
Be there or be a sissy!

GOT A CALL FROM THE HOSPITAL THIS MORNING
It was one of the nurses doing a follow-up to see how I was feeling following the colonoscopy yesterday. I told her I felt great and, if they had an opening for tomorrow, to put me down and I'd come in and have another one.
She said I made her day.

THINKING BACK ON ANOTHER MARCH
It was two months before I would be born. March 13, 1940. It was snowing in La Crosse. It had begun to fall during the evening of the 12th. It continued snowing all day on the 13th through the morning of the 14th. When it was over, La Crosse had 8.6 inches of snow on the ground.
Tomorrow, 72 years later, our high will be near 80.
MY STOMACH IS STILL GURGALING
It won't let me forget the awful liquid I sent down there yesterday. I sure was glad to hear the doctor say I don't have to go back to see him for another 5 years.

OLE AND THE ARAB SHEIK
An Arab Sheik was admitted to Abbott-Northwestern Hospital for heart surgery, but prior to the surgery, the doctors needed to store his blood in case the need arose. As the gentleman had a rare type of blood, it couldn't be found locally, so, the call went out to all the states.
Finally a New London, Minnesota Norwegian was located who had the right blood type. The Norwegian, whose name was Ole, willingly donated his blood for the Arab.
After the surgery, the Arab sent Ole, as appreciation for giving his blood, a new BMW, a pile of diamonds & several million U.S. dollars.
A couple of days later, once again, the Arab had to go through some corrective surgery. His doctor telephoned Ole who was more than happy to donate his blood again.
After the second surgery, the Arab sent Ole a thank-you card and five pounds of lutefisk.
Ole was shocked that time the Arab did not reciprocate with a new car, diamonds, and money.
He phoned the Arab & said: "I thought dat you vould be yenerous again, and dat you vould give me anudder BMW, diamonds & money... But you only gave me a tank-you card & some lutefisk."
To this the Arab replied: "Ya, but now I haf Norvegian blood in my veins so I gotta tink tvice before I spend."

ANOTHER FAMILY MEMBER AT THE HOSPITAL TODAY
Uncle Bob went in after having trouble breathing. He thought he should have it check out. He was, apparently OK.
They gave him a voucher and he got to go back home in a cab! He's riding in style these days.
BACK HOME FROM MY LATEST CLINIC ADVENTURE
MY RECOVERY ROOM
That's all done for a few years again. They got it done right on time with an excellent staff. Some really nice people. I left enough gas there to get to Texas and back.
Rita got done with her dentist and then came back and picked me up and we went to Houghtens to eat lunch and I was ready for it.
Colonoscopys don't come around very often but it's often enough for me.
I'M THINKING AGAIN
As I sit here, trying to get the last two glasses of electrolytes down, I'm thinking. If I feel so good why do I have to go to the doctor every other day. Then I thought, I probably feel so good because I go to the doctor every other day.
KIDS KNOW MORE THAN WE THINK
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane toMobserve the procedure.
They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ''I know why.''
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.
He said,''People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'' The Six-year-old continued, ''Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

RAIN!
What a beautiful rain, this morning. A gentle spring shower. I'm going out on a limb and saying our snow days are over for a few months.

AUNT WILDA CALLED TODAY
She was at Bob and Lynne's for three weeks and really enjoyed it. She came home and had her medical check-ups. Sounded like all was OK.
She was planning on calling Uncle Bob next.

PAT TELLS IT LIKE IT IS
It's so wonderful to hear a politician who, actually, has something constructive and sensible to say as opposed to the nitwit, goof balls running around the country pretending to be politicians.

So much of this is what George Kennan was saying in the 1940s and 1950s, in the wake of WWII, as he was formulating the US Cold War policy of containment of the Soviet Union. Military action was a very last resort. Eisenhower appreciated Kennan--both warned of a "military-industrial complex," which, sadly, has indeed become predominant, and has made our overseas military engagements perpetual. Nor did Kennan look well on trying to recreate American democracies elsewhere. I repeat a favorite Kennan quote going back to 1821, when J.Q. Adams said the US should not be going abroad in search of monsters. This is the eternal question in our history: how much do we need to do to protect ourselves? There seems to be no one lasting answer.

THIS WILL BE THE LONGEST 24 HOURS OF THE YEAR
It's only 10:30 AM and I'm, already, starving and I can't eat until after my colonoscopy tomorrow morning. That's 24 hours away. Are they really sure that a person can live 24 hours without, even, a Twinkie?
I've watched the 7 minute video they told me to watch. I've mixed the horrible stuff I have to drink and put it in the refrigerator to chill. I know, from previous experience, that "chilling" isn't going to do a damn thing to make it taste any better.
Roger is going to pick me up, when it's over, and bring me home. I hope he brings along a sandwich, a cookie or even a dog biscuit. I won't be fussy.
I see the Wrought Iron Grill in Owosso, Michigan is giving a 25% discount to everyone who has had their colonoscopy. I knew I should have moved to Owosso.

A SURPRISING STORY IN THE LA CROSSE TRIBUNE
If you asked someone, "Tourists from what country spend the most when they visit the USA", you would name some European country or, maybe, Japan. Of course, you'd be wrong, which is what makes the story so interesting.
The fact is that travelers from BRAZIL spend more money while in the USA than travelers from any other country.

AIN'T THIS THE TRUTH
Out bicycling one day with my eight-year-old Granddaughter I got a little wistful. 'In ten years,' I said, 'you'll want to be with your friends and you won't go walking, biking, and swimming with me like you do now.
Carolyn shrugged. 'In ten years you'll be too old to do all those things anyway.'

IT'S GRILLIN' TIME AGAIN
Roger is a shrimp fan and here's the best way to grill them.
SOME DELIGHTFUL FACTS YOU DON'T REALLY NEED TO KNOW
- The average human body contains enough iron to make a 3 inch nail.
- Neanderthal's had bigger brains than we do.
- Apples are more effective for waking you up than coffee is.
- The only food that doesn't rot is honey.
- The film "Titanic" cost more to make than it cost to build the original Titanic.
- Bananas share about 50% of DNA with humans. (But bananas taste better).
