A TEXAS AUTUMN

ANOTHER NICE PHOTO
FROM DONNIE

IT'S FASCINATING TO WATCH A GREAT ARTIST WORK

THIS IS AGNES CECILE
ROME, ITALY

EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT FROM MOTHER NATURE

DONNIE WRITES
"Wettest weather we have seen in more than a year.  It's been raining steady for 24 hours.  Not heavy (the creeks aren't even flowing yet) but sustained drizzles and light showers.  It's perfect for resuscitating foliage."

POOH DAY

LETS HAVE A REDNECK CHRISTMAS!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS
EXCEPT THE ONE
WHERE YOU'RE NAKED
IN CHURCH

A STAR IS BORN

This is 10 year old Angie Vazquez and her family band from Mexico.  YES!  I SAID 10 YEARS OLD!

These kids posted their video on You Tube and have had over a million hits in less than a week.  Take my word, she's gonna give Justin a run for his money!!

WONDER IF RICK AND ANGELA HAVE A FIREPLACE?

This will be a good weekend for them to throw a few logs on the fire.  Wyoming is set for some really strong blasts of Arctic air.  Along with some snow, some parts of the state will see 20 below zero temperatures by Monday morning.  Around Worland it will drop to about 4 below tomorrow night.  Rapid City will drop to 9 above by Monday morning.

I hope they aren't planning on any overnight camping in a tent!

SNOW

We may get a little snow this morning but you'll have to head west for a LOT of snow.  Snowflake, Arizona would be a good place to go.  They have 15 inches of snowflakes on the ground right now.

GEORGE McGOVERN: GET WELL SOON!

Sorry to hear that George McGovern took a nasty fall, last evening, as he was walking to the library in Mitchell for an interview with C-SPAN.  He was flown, by helicopter, to Sioux Falls for treatment.  He remains in the hospital this morning.

A NASTY DAY

Travel difficulties were reported in southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa and western Wisconsin, early this morning, as a result of ice glazing.  4 to 7 inches of snow could fall late this afternoon and evening over northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota and north central Wisconsin.

I THOUGHT OF MOTHER WHEN I SAW THIS RECIPE

She used to make the best BBQ chicken wings.  Here is a recipe for HONEY LIME CHICKEN WINGS
that sure looks good.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ADVISES:

Accumulating snow will fall from late this afternoon through the evening.

JUST CAUGHT A FUNNY TWEET

It was from Minneapolis and the Tweeter said that police were directing traffic on 50th Street in south Minneapolis around Mt. Olivet Church.  What was causing the traffic congestion?  I kid you not.  They're having a lutefisk dinner. Those Norwegians always know where to find a stinky fish.

THE LAST TIME IT SNOWED??

I couldn't remember when our last big snowfall was so I did a search in my email and it was April 26 that Roger sent this photo of winters last hurrah.

READY AS I'LL EVER BE

I've got them out and they're sitting by the front door.

PLEASE DRIVE WITH CARE

A recent joint study conducted by the Department of Health and the Department of Motor Vehicles indicates that 23% of traffic accidents are alcohol related.

This means that the remaining 77% are caused by people who drink bottled water, starbucks, soda, juice, energy drinks and junk like that.

Therefore, beware of those who do not drink alcohol. They cause three times as many accidents.

TALK ABOUT A "QUICKIE"!!

I hear a lot about celebrity break-ups today.  A little research, however, shows that this new crop of bimbos can't hold a candle to the real stars of days gone by.

If you want to read about a real short, quickie marriage you'll have to go all the way back to 1919.  That's the year that Rudolph Valentino and Jean Acker were married and divorced within a period of SIX HOURS!  Probably not the best example of the "sanctity of marriage".

BELIEVE IT OR NOT: I LIKE THIS!

I've never made a secret of the fact that I can't stand Christmas music but these two famous kids have done something that Bing Crosby couldn't do.  They've recorded a Christmas song I actually like!

HERE COMES WINTER

A storm system could bring HEAVY SNOW to the area tonight through tomorrow night.

Chances are the higher snow amounts will fall north and west of Charles City, Iowa to La Crosse to Wisconsin Rapids Saturday night.

Watches and warnings will, probably, be posted later.

A NOTE FROM DONNIE REMINDS OF THE TIME....

This actually happened, one day, at Quillan's.  They had one aisle devoted to nothing but potato chips.  Dill pickle chips, taco chips, cream cheese chips, etc.  I walked up and down that aisle four or five times and I never did find a single bag of potato chips that tasted just like...potato chips.

Anyway, Donnie says.....

"At least Christmas brings a better round of commercials than the relentless medicine and insurance ads that bombard us the rest of the year.  On my way home I heard a car ad for "cheese accoutrements."

Earlier today I stopped at a coffee shop and ordered green tea.  "Will that be citrus green tea or tropical coconut green tea or China green tips green tea or..."  Excuse me, I interrupt, but can I get just plain green tea?  "I'm not sure we have that."  Now, again, this is right out of Bob & Ray.  In one segment of their restaurant review series they are trying Bernie's Pushcart on the Green, in Central Park.  Bob is reporting Bernie's countless variations on the hot dog, including the "Hot Dog Chateaubriand, for two."  Ray says "I suppose you can also get just the regular hot dog with mustard and relish," to which Bob predictably replies, "No, I don't believe you can."  Once it was a joke; now it's daily life in America."

INTERESTING NOTE FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

During the meteorological autumn, September 1 through November 30, Both La Crosse and Rochester were warmer and dryer than normal.  This is what we typically experience during a La Nina autumn.

A LITTLE MEDICAL NEWS

I just read an article that says a high fiber diet is a good thing for CKD patients.  Hey Roger!  Have you got a bale of hay left?

WILLARD'S GETTING READY TO HIBERNATE

"In for the weekend, especially Sunday, cold front is supposed to arrive with rain.  It will be crockpot chili day".

DONNIE SENT A PRETTY PICTURE

"Linda turned this neighborhood shot into our screen saver and it's lovely on her computer's BIG screen".

I'LL BET HE CAN'T DO IT AGAIN

Here's a hard core drinker and one tough Dodge truck.

The driver hit and sheared off a light post and then kept driving for about 2 miles to a bar where he stopped and had another beer.

DUANE REPORTED FROM RAPID CITY

"Inch of snow on the ground with ice underneath.  Overcast and very cold."

MARK TWAIN TOLD IT LIKE IT WAS....AND IS!

"We have the best government that money can buy."

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

Before you pour another cup of coffee read this from the BBC

WE'RE GETTING A NEW (IMPROVED) PARK IN LA CROSSE

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING ON LINE? CHECK THIS OUT FIRST!

HORSE MEAT? NOT FOR ME, THANK YOU!

I see congress has lifted the ban on funding horse meat inspection and slaughter houses could open up within a month.  What's next?  Dogs?

SNOW

Minneapolis was getting some snow this morning and radar showed some more light precipitation around Eau Claire.  Most of the flakes will fall north of us but we could see a few around here today.

I know all of you are looking forward to a "white Christmas" but I've had many green Christmas holidays and many white ones and I much prefer the green ones.  As far as I'm concerned, "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow.......somewhere else!

The other day I had a Nickleback video on the blog.

They've got another song that I really like.  It's about the best drinkin' song I've ever heard and I love this video.

THE COUNTDOWN TO THE NEW YEAR BEGINS TONIGHT

The La Crosse Skyrockers will shoot the first shells tonight between 5 and 6:30 to start the countdown to the big show on New Years Eve.  Look to the east, just above Forest Hills Golf Course to see the show.  If you really want a good view the best place to be is my bedroom window, 5 floors above all the trees and buildings!

LET'S SEE IF YOU CAN TOP THIS FOR CHRISTMAS DECORATONS

HOLIDAY LIGHTING

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Burger King will introduce their new french fry in December.  It's thicker, crisper and a special coating keeps them hot longer plus they have less salt.

Good golly Miss Molly!  That is big news!

DUMB QUESTION DEPARTMENT

So I walk up to the checkout, this morning, with 10 cans of cat food and the checker says, "Good morning!  Do you have a cat?"

COMMENT FROM DONNIE:

"Seeing your weather report brings to mind a novel I just finished reading about an actual blizzard in North Dakota in 1984.  Neither of us reads many novels but this one is very entertaining.  It's full of wit and wisdom with "real-ish" Dakota characters.  It's called "Downtown Owl" by Chuck Klosterman."

I AGREE WITH WILLARD:

"I bought an 8 pack of VIVA paper towels Monday.  Virtually non-absorbent. Will not buy again.  Viva and Scott paper products, owned by Kimberly Clark, all poor quality."

HERE IT COMES

FROM THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

A cold front will push through the area tomorrow with some minor snow accumulations of an inch or less.  Most of the snow will be north of I-90 where 1 to 2 inches could fall.

A stronger system will move in late Friday and into Sunday.  There goes the weekend!!

This weekend system could bring significant snow accumulations along with a wintry mix of precipitation.  If you're planning on weekend travel keep a close eye on the weather.

THE TRUTH HURTS

This is making the rounds on email.
Remember, not only did you contribute to Social Security but your employer did too. It totaled 15% of your income before taxes. If you averaged only $30K over your working life, that's close to $220,500.

If you calculate the future value of $4,500 per year (yours and your employer's contribution) at a simple 5% (less than what the govt. pays on the money that it borrows), after 49 years of working you'd have $892,919.98.

If you took out only 3% per year, you'd receive $26,787.60 per year and it would last better than 30 years (until you're 95 if you retire at age 65) and that's with no interest paid on that final amount on deposit! If you bought an annuity and it paid 4% per year, you'd have a lifetime income of $2,976.40 per month.

The folks in Washington have pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than Bernie Madhoff ever did.

Entitlement my butt, I paid cash for my social security insurance!!!! Just because they borrowed the money, doesn't make my benefits some kind of charity or handout!!

Congressional benefits ---- free healthcare, outrageous retirement packages, 67 paid holidays, three weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid sick days, now that's welfare, and they have the nerve to call my social security retirement entitlements?

We're "broke" and can't help our own Seniors, Veterans, Orphans, Homeless

In the last months we have provided aid to Haiti ,Chile , and Turkey . And now Pakistan ......home of bin Laden. Literally, BILLIONS of DOLLARS!!!

Our retired seniors living on a 'fixed income' receive no aid nor do they get any breaks while our government and religious organizations pour Hundreds of Billions of $$$$$$'s and Tons of Food to Foreign Countries!

They call Social Security and Medicare an entitlement even though most of us have been paying for it all our working lives and now when it’s time for us to collect, the government is running out of money. Why did the government borrow from it in the first place? Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT* gave 'US' the same support they give to other countries.

Sad isn't it?

SEEN ON A T-SHIRT

LUTEFISK
The piece of cod that passes all understanding

WHOSE COUNTING?

American Airlines bankruptcy is the 100th bankruptcy in the airline industry in the past 21 years.

STALIN REMEMBERED

There's an interesting story in the La Crosse Tribune about Stalin's daughter who lived a great deal of her life in Wisconsin after she defected from the Soviet Union.  POLITICAL PRISONER TO THE END

DONNIE GETS AND A+ ON HIS EXAM

If it wasn't for aches and pains and body breakdowns I wonder what old people would talk about.  Donnie just sent his latest medical report.

"Got my annual medical exam results yesterday. All the numbers quite normal, some even slightly better than last year--like you, I'm actually getting better with age. So, I immediately went to the nearest coffee house and had a piece of chocolate cake."

BOOKS

I think I want to read Carrie Fisher's new book, "Shockaholic" simply because I've traveled the same road with shock therapy that she has.  Even though the treatment was much more gruesome in my day than it is now I think it will be interesting.  She can be a delightfully funny lady, just like her mother.

COUNTDOWN TO RETIREMENT

Rita stopped by with coupons for me.  She reports, "13 1/2 lousy days left!"

You know what they say...the best time to start thinking about retirement is before the boss does.

I like what Scott  Elledge said.  "It's time I stepped aside for a less experienced and less able person."

MADE IN CHINA STAMPED ON YOUR PILLS?

The (legal) drug business is the next big thing China is getting into.  It could lower prices but I'm not sure I'm ready for that.

A BIT OF HISTORY

92 years ago today it was snowing in La Crosse.  Actually, the snow began to fall during the early morning hours of the 28th of November, 1919, and it kept snowing until the evening of the 29th.  When it was all over we had an 8.4 inch snow cover.

By the way,  it was the next day that Uncle Jim was born.

Speaking of 1919, that was also the year the Green Bay Packers were formed.  However, the Packers didn't join the National Football League until 1921.

I was telling Rita, Dad never liked football.  He started the high school football team in Marion but only because high school football was just becoming a big deal and he was asked to form a team.  Basketball was always his first love when it came to sports.

Back to the calendar, It was also on this date in 1986 that Cary Grant died at the age of 82 and in 1981 Natalie Wood died at the age of 43.

LEFTOVERS

I'm on the last bit of leftover Thanksgiving turkey Rita sent me home with.  There wasn't much but I ground up what there was and made turkey salad for sandwiches.  It is delicious but not easy to eat.

I had shared some of the turkey with Thunder on Friday and he went CRAZY for it.  Not only did he finish it in about 60 seconds, he stood there for another minute, or so, licking the plate.  I gave him a touch more on Saturday and he went through the same routine.

Now, of course, he knows the smell.  The minute the turkey salad comes out of the refrigerator he's under my feet wanting his share.  I keep trying to tell him he won't like it in the salad form with the mayo, onions, green pepper, etc.  Unfortunately, you can't really tell a cat anything.

Now, if I want a sandwich, I have to wait until he's having a nap before I dare take it out.  And, I have to eat it quick before the smell wakes him up.

As far as he's concerned, Rita is the best "turkey maker" there ever was.

COULD LA CROSSE LOSE COMMERCIAL AIRLINE SERVICE??

There's a good chance we could lose it all or service could be substantially reduced.  Read the story in the La Crosse Tribune.

Rick sent a picture of the "Wyoming Packer Backers".

This is the best poster I've seen today.

This is the craziest recipe I've ever seen.

That's right, folks, Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll Pancakes.  I'll bet they're good but way too much work for me.  Anyone want to make them for me?  If you make them, I'll be happy to eat them.
Get the recipe right here.

Thanks Russia!

During a weeks time, most of the people who view this page are, of course, from the USA, but, the #2 country this past week has been Russia. Folks from there have viewed the page 109 times.  большое спасибо!!  (For those of you who don't speak russian, that's "many thanks"!)

Caroline Kennedy is 54 today.

Yesterday's high was 53.  Today, we won't get higher than 37 and that will happen this morning.  Then it falls the rest of the day.  That's indoor weather but it is almost December so, I suppose, we can expect a lot of "indoor days" ahead.

Make a note of this for the kids.
