I mentioned I was reading a new Teddy Roosevelt biography by Roger L. Di Silvestro. I got a kick out of what things cost back in 1878. The most expensive item on the menu at the Jim Fisk tavern, in New York, was a porterhouse steak dinner for 75 cents. Another eating establishment offered roast turkey with cranberry sauce for 18 cents.
By 1878, the Roosevelt family was worth a million or more. Just imagine what they could buy with a million dollars in those days.
