NEW YEARS EVE: Have a great night but please take care!

It was another New Years Eve, many years ago, 1985 to be exact, that Rick Nelson was flying aboard a DC-3 bound for Dallas, to play a New Years Eve concert.  Along the way, a fire broke out.  The plane crashed.  All aboard were killed.

It was so good to read this morning that, according to the Coulee Region Humane Society, 930 animals moved into new homes this year rather than face euthanasia.  That's a 3% increase over last year.  3% is surely not enough but it's moving in the right direction.

Ohhhhhh....to be young again!

No doubt about it.  2014 will be off to a cold start.  Today's high will be around 5, tonight's low near 0 and tomorrows high about 10.  Wind chills, over the period will run around 20 below today and 10 below tonight and tomorrow.  It won't amount to much but we'll see some show showers through tomorrow to top off the cold air.

Such as it is, the light at the end of the tunnel is a high of 16 by Friday and 26 on Saturday.

You may not believe this but it is possible to party TOO MUCH!

HAVE FUN TONIGHT BUT DRIVE CAREFULLY!
This photo is not of me but nothing is a secret with me so I have to tell you that this very same thing happened to me, many years ago, in Rapid City.  The worst part of the whole episode was that I lost a contact lens.

The best part of the whole episode was that the cop knew me.

This was back in the good old days when we were a bit more "relaxed" about these sorts of situations.

Oh, yes...I could tell you stories.......
There's going to be something very special in the sky to issue in the new year:

How about spending New Years Eve at TGI Friday's?  No.  Not the one here.  I'm talking about the TGI Friday's in Times Square where the big ball will drop ringing in the New Year.

The TGI Friday's special will be a Couples Champagne VIP Package for....are you ready for this?????......$1,095.00. Hey, baby, this ain't no "Dairyland Friday's".  This is New York!  Even TGI Friday's is pricey in New York on New Years Eve!
I see a couple of state senators want to pass a law requiring drivers, 75 and older, to get a drivers test every 4 instead of every 8 years.

If you tested some of the old drivers, I see, every 4 months it wouldn't be enough.

They say their eyesight should be checked.  Hey, guys.  Better add hearing to that, check the heart to make sure they're still alive and, for the love of God, take that the damn phone away from them!  They can call when they get home....if they live long enough to get home.

Better yet, I'm close enough to 75 to know.  If you're 75 or older you're better off STAYING home.  The only place you really need to get to is the doctor and the bathroom.

What does the Bible really say about marriage?

A pioneer of Rock & Roll and the man that every rock artist that followed looked up to, Bo Diddley was born on this date in 1928.  He was the best!

Oh, my God!  I didn't think of that....There are people who have to go to the barn in this cold!!

Got a note from Carl.  He and Kathy are in Superior.  He said, "It's 9:30 and 21 below.  Wanna Trade?"

Some damn cold weather reports:

Besides the cold we'll get an inch of new snow today.
When is the last time your dog took you fishing?

I seem to have developed a cold.  Non-stop sneezing and blowing. Head and ears all stuffed up.  Don't come anywhere near me!

Noel Paul Stookey turns 75 today.  You, probably don't know that name but you know the voice.  He's the Paul in Peter, Paul and Mary.  This was one of their biggest hits, written by Bob Dylan.

Why do we need a "Glow in the Dark Pig"?  You think you've heard everything and then you read something like this.

Cats and dogs can get along--why can't humans?

Would you say Aaron Rogers got back just in the nick of time?

I slept a couple of hours last night.
The rest of the night I was blowing, sniffing and dripping.  We are in a very foul mood this morning and this "brisk" Wisconsin weather isn't helping.

How cold was it??

This will give you a better idea where all the cold weather is.

What a cute photo!  It makes me think of you know who.

REMEMBERING WOUNDED KNEE: DECEMBER 29, 1890=150 MURDERED 51 WOUNDED

At 10:00 AM Sioux Falls was at 8 below with a wind chill of 29 below.

Look at this.  It's downright scary!

"It was so cold I saw an Amish guy buying an electric blanket"
(Jay Leno)

The wind was already gusting to 32 MPH when I got up.  I could hear the dumpster covers "banging in the breeze".  This is only the beginning of a very miserable cold spell.

The National Weather Service says the temperature will fall to about 5 below by 5:00 PM and the wind chill will drop down to around 22 below.  Tomorrow will be worse.

Sioux Falls is already at 1 below with a wind chill of 24 below at 2:00 A.M. and that's all heading our way.

I don't think I'll venture out, today, for anything less than a million dollars......well, maybe $500,000.  I'd have to think about it.
FROM
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

Wind chills will fall to -20 to -25 by later this afternoon.  Then be in the -20 to -30 range through tonight and much of Monday morning.

FROST BITE AND HYPOTHERMIA CAN OCCUR WITHIN 30 MINUTES IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN..

WHAT DID YOU SAY ABOUT TERRORISTS?

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways but narrower viewpoints.

We spend more but have less, we buy more but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences but less time.

We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge but less judgment, more experts yet more problems, more medicine but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years.

We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space.

We've done larger things but not better things. We've cleaned up the air but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom but not our prejudice. We write more but learn less. We plan more but accomplish less. We've learned to rush but not to wait.

We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer to quiet to kill.

It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight or to just hit delete.

Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember to say 'I love you' to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind. And always remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by those moments that take our breath away.

YOU KNOW WHAT? WINTER IN WISCONSIN REALLY SUCKS!

I'll never forget the day two of my best friends, Gary and Jeannie, got married.  I wasn't the groom but I was the BEST MAN there!

This sounds like a job for Inspector Clouseau.

DONNIE WRITES:

"Linda and I were out, and came home to find these curious footprints (boots?) across the front patio.  Oddly, the prints tracked not from  the sidewalk but from the garage to the front door.  Even more curious, the pattern seems not a normal gait, but nearly a hopping, both feet together.  There is no indication that anyone was in the garage or house.

We saw this pointed-toe pattern once before, a year or so ago, but then found a business card at the front door identifying the fellow who has coated our driveway a couple times.  I suspect he is back for more business, but this time there was no card, and it doesn't seem the time of year for that kind of work."

Here's an Ole and Lena joke I don't remember hearing before.

Lena asks her boyfriend Ole to come over Friday night and have dinner with her parents. This being a big event, the Lena tells Ole that after dinner, she would like to go out and (vell ya know) for the first time.

Well, Ole is ecstatic, but he has never (vell ya know) before, so he takes a trip to the pharmacist to get some protection.

The pharmacist helps Ole for about an hour. He teaches Ole everything there is to know about protection and (vell ya know).

At the register, the pharmacist asks Ole how many he'd like to buy; a 3-pack, a 10-pack, or a family pack. Ole insists on the family pack because he thinks he will be very busy, it being his first time and all.

That night, Ole shows up at the Lena's parent's house and meets her at the door. "Ole I'm so excited for you ta meet my parents, come on in."

Ole goes inside and is taken to the dinner table where Lena's parents are seated. Ole quickly offers to say grace and bows his head.

A minute passes and Ole is still deep in prayer with his head down. Three minutes of praying pass and still no movement from Ole.

Finally, after five minutes of praying with his head down, Lena leans over and whispers to her Ole, "I had no idea you vere so religious."

Ole turns and whispers back, "I had no idea your father vas a pharmacist."

MORE SUPER COLD COMING TO WISCONSIN

HERE'S A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE.

Donnie and Linda's land is alive with birds!

I think this is just the neatest idea.  It can be sprayed on sidewalks, roads, etc. and it glows in the dark.

TODAY WE'RE CELEBRATING FRUITCAKE DAY
TOP 10 USES FOR FRUITCAKE
10  Use slices to balance that wobbly kitchen table.

9  Use instead of sand bags during El Nino.

8  Send to the U.S. Air Force and let the troops drop them on the enemy.

7  Use as railroad ties.

6  Use as speed bumps to foil the neighborhood drag racers.

5  Collect 10 of them and use as bowling pins.

1  Two words: Pin cushion.

People Magazine says the most searched for recipe, on the internet, in 2013 was CHILI!

OK GIRLS, LET'S SEE YOU TRY THIS!

It was on December 27, 1932 that Radio City Music Hall opened its doors for the first time.  It was 30 years later, in 1962 that I first walked through those doors and it's one of those things I've never forgotten.

Our weatherman has some more bad news for us.  MORE BITTER COLD WEATHER IS ON THE WAY with wind chills of 20 to 35 below for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday night.  That's just downright obscene,

Daytime highs will be around 2 degrees above zero both Monday and Tuesday and those are the REAL temperatures...not the wind chills.

I'm already cold just thinking about it.  You can be your bottom dollar that I won't be going out unless it's absolutely necessary (as in a matter of life or death).

This was our house in Marion.
Funny how much bigger it seemed when we were little kids.
Donnie took these pictures on a trip back to Marion a few years ago.  The house is gone now.  Just a memory.  Torn down to make way for a vacant lot.
WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO TAKE DOWN THE CHRISTMAS TREE?

I THINK I'LL GO SHOPPING FOR A PARTY HAT TOMORROW

I AGREE!!

"What happened to the Christmas leftovers?

THE FORECAST IS LOOKING GOOD!  Like, we're talking SUNSHINE tomorrow and Saturday and we could, actually, get above freezing on Saturday!!

All these years Donnie has been sitting on my gold mine and I didn't even know it.

He wrote:

"We have about 40 of your 1950's and 60's era 45 RPM's, mostly Elvis.  A casual web search reveals these now sell for anything from $10.00 to $50.00 each.  That's a minimum of $400.00.  If/when I get around to marketing them, I'll split the winnings with you."
I'd sure like a good piece of pie right now!  Here's an article about the best pie shops in the USA and guess what?  There's one in Wisconsin and one in Minnesota!!  CHECK IT OUT HERE

Speaking of pie, remember the other day when I was talking about Grasshopper pie?  Would you believe that Kathy actually made one for dessert yesterday!  Yup, it was a real grasshopper without the glass!  Outstanding.  THANKS KATHY!
We had such a great time Opening presents, eating and drinking!  It was a wonderful Christmas and we wish you could have been with us.  Since you weren't, we drank a toast to you!

This is SO FUNNY!

The warmest Christmas we ever had in La Crosse was 46 degrees in 1982.

Are we going to get rid of the bitter cold weather anytime soon?
Unfortunately, the answer is NO.  The forecast calls for wind chills of 20 to 30 below Sunday night into Monday morning.

HERE'S YOUR WHITE CHRISTMAS MAP

JUST ONE MORE CHRISTMAS SONG

8 SURE SIGNS YOU'RE SICK OF THE HOLIDAYS
8 You've got red and green bags under your eyes.

7  You're serving reindeer pot pie

6  When you hear "sleigh bells ring, are you listenin'?, you scream, "NO! I'm not listening."

5  You climb on the roof and start throwing cold water on the carolers at your front door.

4  You think you hear your Christmas tree taunting you.

3  Instead of spending time with family, you're spending quality time with the dog.

2  You've got eggnog coming out of your nose.

1  Two words: tinsel rash!

We're off to Carl and Kathy's house for Christmas day and wherever you are I hope you're as merry as we are going to be.

The readers of Conde Nast recently voted on the Most Friendly and Least Friendly cities in the world.  The results are quite interesting.  Note that there is only ONE U.S. city on the most friendly list and FIVE U.S. cities on the most unfriendly list.

After that big Christmas dinner it would be a good idea to do your exercises.

Here is one great idea!

There's an interesting article in CONSUMER REPORTS that says they tested 316 samples of chicken breasts from various companies and found harmful bacteria in almost all of them.  As the article points out, that doesn't mean you should avoid chicken but you should make sure you handle it right.  READ THE DO'S AND DON'TS OF HANDLING CHICKEN HERE.
First class stamps go to 49 cents next month.  I guess those "forever" stamps I bought weren't.

Hey!  We've got another birthday to celebrate.
Happy birthday to JIMMY BUFFETT.  He's 67 today!

When you think of Jimmy Buffett you think of Key West and what's Christmas like in Key West?  Well, at 4 o'clock, this morning, the sky was clear and the temperature was 70 degrees.

I spent a couple of "green Christmases" in Key West and several more in Texas and is a green Christmas better than a white Christmas?

It sure, as hell, is!

I just came across this photo this morning.  Haven't seen it in a long time and I really love it.  Those were happy days in the Rio Grande Valley!
