"I've been reporting that the Texas drought of 2011 is the most severe on record, referring to meteorological records that go back about 150 years. Now we have an even larger picture.
Scientists track weather by means other than direct human observation, and are able to go back much farther by studying tree rings and soil samples and ancient glacial ice samples.
I just read a report that says 2011 is the driest in the last 500 years, with the single exception of 1789. I believe that's the year the French Revolution broke out."
