MONDAY JANUARY 6: I'M GROWING WINTER WEARY

I'M BEGINNING TO HATE THIS WINTER

THEY SAY WE'LL BE UP TO 31 BY FRIDAY
31 will feel like a heat wave!  I can hardly wait.

BRAVING THE ELEMENTS
I made a run over to Co-op and, being the sturdy Viking that I am, I didn't think it was all that cold even though they say the wind chill is 40 below.  I will admit, however, that I don't think I would have wanted to walk much farther than Co-op.  I don't think it would take long to start turning blue.

There's a web page called GRANDPARENTS.COM that made me feel so much better this morning.  They're showing photos of some of the most famous aging stars in Hollywood and they're not lookin' good!  Take a look and see what you think.

TEMPERATURE 12 BELOW
WIND CHILL 33 BELOW
AT 1:00 a.m.

.

This is just nuts.  Weather like this should be against the law.  The forecast calls for a high of 14 below today.  14 below!  What the hell can you do with 14 below except sit in the house and see if it warms up to 13 below.

To say "we are not pleased" is, very much, an understatement.

TODAY IS THREE KINGS DAY
Celebrated on the 6th of January, it recalls the account in Matthew of the "wise men from the East" who came to visit the baby Jesus.  Matthew is the only place in the Gospels where this story is told.   It does not say how many "kings" there were but it mentions three gifts given to the child so the 3 wisemen tradition was born.

By the way, if you'd like to celebrate Christmas again, Orthodox Christmas, which goes by the Gregorian calendar, is today.

Merry Christmas to our Orthodox friends.

In case you're wondering, SPRING is 72 days away (and it can't come soon enough).

My hands burn.  Skin as dry as old leather.  Winter really dries me up.  Lot's of St. Ives Moisturizer needed!

I just got an email from Walgreen's.  Tomorrow is Seniors Day.
20%off all the Walgreen's house brand items if you're 55 or over or have an AARP card.  If I can get over there without freezing I'd better take advantage of that.

NEWS FROM LYNNE:

" We are not going anywhere.  Way too cold.

Dawn and her pup were here for a week and luckily missed this cold wave.  We had such a good time with the family and drove up for a day visit with her Grandma.  Weather in Georgia is much warmer and she had a safe trip back before the snow fell.  Just a little snow on her way.

Right now it is 8 degrees but -12 with the wind and it is cloudy.  Prediction for Monday is -19 with feeling like -46.  Hope everyone stays warm and keep their pets inside."

SUNDAY JANUARY 5: THE SERIOUSLY COLD WEATHER HAS ARRIVED

ANOTHER COLD GAME DAY:

I took the garbage out today but I didn't venture any farther.  That was all the cold I needed.

More cold air will move down from Minnesota tonight bringing wind chills to 50 below zero tonight.

I may try to run to the store tomorrow but I won't spend too much time outside.

I rode downstairs with a Holmen teacher who lives here.  She said they closed the schools there for tomorrow and she thinks they closed the La Crosse schools too.

This is, exactly, the kind of crap I think about in the morning before I get dressed for the day.

BEST TWEET OF THE MORNING:

.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE
REMEMBER YOUR PETS

To celebrate bird day here's a talented bird you may not have seen (or heard) before.  It's a lyre bird.

And, we can't have bird day without a bird joke.

A bird lover told her priest that she had two talking parrots and they only knew how to say, "Hi!  We're prostitutes, do you want to have some fun?"

The priest was shocked but told the lady he had a solution to her problem.  He said, "I have two male parrots and I've taught them to pray the Rosary.  Bring your two parrots over here and I'll put them in the cage with my parrots.

The lady brought the two female birds over and they put them in the cage with the males.  Immediately, the two females said, "Hi!  We're prostitutes.  Do you want to have some fun?"

One male parrot looked at the other male parrot and said, "Throw the beads away.  Our prayers have been answered."

This will be a quiet day at home for me.  I'm totally tuckered after yesterdays social whirl.

I went to lunch at Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine with Paul and Dorothy and we had such a nice visit.

They were just back from a trip to Colorado and had lots of nice pictures of the home Friend bought in Colorado Springs with a view of Pikes Peak, no less.

Then it was dinner at Arctic Spring with Carl, Kathy, Rita and Roger to celebrate Carl's birthday which is actually today, by the way.  It's amazing how well he's aged.  He doesn't look a day over 75.
TODAY IS

This is a really neat, short, video about bunnies and wolves.

Here's my tip of the day.

SATURDAY JANUARY 4: WARNING: COLD AND GETTING COLDER

I've said it before and I'll say it again:
Anything north of the Texas Gulf coast is TOO DAMN FAR NORTH.

What next??

I'm really sick to hear of the death R.I.P. PHIL
Like Elvis, the Everly Brothers were the act that every aspiring artist studied and looked up to.  No act will ever replace them.

Carl said he's happy to be here because the forecast high for Superior today is 18 below.  Apparently he hasn't seen our forecast for Monday.  Our high in La Crosse will be 16 BELOW MONDAY.

You know what they say, wherever you go, there you are....FREEZING YOUR ASS OFF!

A new weather warning has been issued by the National Weather Service:

FREEZING DRIZZLE HAS DEVELOPED ACROSS PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST  MINNESOTA INTO SOUTHWEST AND CENTRAL WISCONSIN IN THE WAKE OF AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT PASSING THROUGH THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY REGION.

A LIGHT GLAZE IS POSSIBLE ON UNTREATED ROADS BEFORE NOON WHEN THE FREEZING DRIZZLE EITHER ENDS OR CHANGES OVER TO SNOW.

LATER TODAY A DANGEROUS COLD OUTBREAK BEGINS TO FLOW INTO THE REGION. BY SUN NIGHT THE MERCURY WILL PLUMMET INTO THE 25 TO 30 BELOW ZERO RANGE.WITH WIND CHILL VALUES OF 35 TO 50 BELOW ZERO.

THE WORST WIND CHILLS LOOK TO OCCUR MON MORNING WHEN WIND CHILL READINGS COULD BOTTOM OUT AT A FRIGID 60 BELOW ZERO AT TIMES.

THE DANGEROUS COLD IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN OVER THE REGION THROUGH TUES MORNING. THIS WILL BE THE COLDEST AIR SEEN ACROSS THE AREA SINCE FEBRUARY 1996.

This is National Spaghetti Day which reminds me of a joke.

A wealthy man was having an affair with an Italian woman for several years. One night, during one of their rendezvous, she confided in him that she was pregnant.

Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he paid her a large sum of money, if she would go to Italy to secretly have the child. If she stayed in Italy to raise the child, he would also provide child support until the child turned 18.

She agreed, but asked how he would know when the baby was born. To keep it discrete, he told her to simply mail him a post card and write "Spaghetti" on the back. He would then arrange for child support payments to begin.

One day, about 9 months later, he came home to his confused wife. "Honey," she said. "You received a very strange post card today." "Oh, just give it to me and I'll explain it," he said.

The wife obeyed and watched as her husband read the card, turned white and fainted. On the card was written: "Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti. Two with meatballs, one without."

You'll never know how many times I've asked this question:
They've expanded the warming center at the First Baptist Church at 1209 West Main for those who need a warm place during this dangerous cold spell.
.
All the years I lived in Houston and I didn't know Anheuser-Busch had a brewery there.  It's a big one and they've been there since 1966.  That's the brewery where the new 25 ounce Budweiser cans of beer will be produced.

Bud is big in Texas and nobody will turn down an extra ounce.  At least, nobody I know.

HE'S OLD.....VERY OLD.

TIME TO GET UP, PEOPLE!

NOW, HERE'S SOME
REALLY GREAT
NEWS!

WEATHER WARNING
STAY OUT OF THE COLD!
ONE WEATHERMAN SAYS
"If you're under 40 you've never seen it this cold."
From 6 PM tonight through Tuesday morning, LIFE THREATENING WIND CHILLS OF 35 TO 50 BELOW ZERO.  FROSTBITE CAN OCCUR IN 30 MINUTES.

TOMORROW NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING, WIND CHILLS OF 35 TO 50 BELOW ZERO ARE EXPECTED.

With wind chills that cold FROST BITE CAN OCCUR IN 10 MINUTES OR LESS.

Or, you could put it another way.  If you get out on a country road and the car breaks down you're, more than likely, going to die so STAY HOME!!!

Of course, there's always the idiot who says, "it won't be that bad and it can't happen to me".  Then we'll read about their death in the paper.

I got all the ingredients I need for chicken soup and chili.  I'll be making both in the crock pot the next couple of days and I'm not going out, again, until this miserable cold is gone!

FRIDAY JANUARY 3, 2014: NO RELIEF FROM THE COLD

NO SCHOOL
IN MINNESOTA ON MONDAY!

IT'S NOW OR NEVER

YOU SURE GOT THAT RIGHT!

THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PHOTO OF THE DAY IS A CLASSIC:

WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD
A CHOCOLATE COVERED CHERRY?

I FINALLY KNOW WHY I'VE BEEN SO UNHAPPY:  All along I've been comparing myself to Brad Pitt.

I was just reading the list of last years baby names from Mayo:
I mentioned the Gunderson names the other day and now, I see, Mayo had some interesting baby names for 2013 too.

On the girls list there was Ella, Olivia and Madison and the boys list includes Owen, Liam and Geronimo.

Yes, that's right.  Geronimo.  I'm wondering if the kid will have a nick-name and what will it be?

THURSDAY JANUARY 2, 2014: WEATHER THE WEATHER BE COLD, WEATHER THE WEATHER BE HOT, WE'LL WEATHER THE WEATHER, WHATEVER THE WEATHER, WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT!

MOTHER WAS BORN
99 YEARS AGO TODAY
SHE COULD HAVE BEEN A STAR
And she was to us.

WE'RE NOT THE ONLY PLACE WITH COLD WEATHER.
Some areas around Houston could see temperatures below freezing for 9 to 12 hours tonight.  That's a killer freeze down there.

OK! NOW I'M JUST PLAIN PISSED!

THE SUNSHINE DIDN'T WARM US UP TODAY
And the clear sky tonight will drop our temperatures down to 15 below, or so.  Have I mentioned how thankful I am for a warm bed?  There are far too many that don't have that.
AND THIS REALLY MAKES ME SICK:
At 2:00 A.M. it was 6 degrees in La Crosse and 18 degrees in Nome, Alaska.

When does the next bus leave for Nome?
 SNOW, SNOW AND MORE SNOW

YOUR MORNING COULD BE MORE MISERABLE
THAN IT ALREADY IS:

August, this year, will have 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays.  This happens only once every 823 years.  The Chinese call it silver pockets full.

GUNDERSON HOSPITAL HAS RELEASED THE LIST OF THE MOST POPULAR BABY NAMES FOR 2012
I'm still shaking my head.

The most popular name for boys was JACKSON followed by LIAM at #2 and OWN at #3.  Own??? Where did that come from?  That comes dangerously close to Owner doesn't it?  Wonder what Grandpa would have thought of that.  Again, like they say, what goes around comes around and the kids, today, think they've come up with something "new"!

Now, for the girls.  #1 was AVA followed by BROOKLYN. Brooklyn???  Why did they have to go all the way to New York to come up with a name?  And, if it had to be New York why not Manhattan?  That's a much more exciting borough to be named after.  And, #3 was Emma.  Hey!  Emma!  I know a dog up at the R & R Ranch that's struttin' around this morning!

You won't find a Douglas around any more and the only Rita's are meter maids.

It's just another reminder that we're very much out of date.

Speaking of Gunderson Health System, they've got a recipe on Twitter, this morning, that sure sounds good.  Check it out here and see what you think.

 I'm all for this, 100%!

THUNDER WOULD HAVE LOVED THIS!

If it ever warms up, I'd like to invite this guy to La Crosse to spend a day on the street!

NEW YEARS DAY: Christmas is done. The New Year is here. I'm ready to move on to spring.

WHAT A MESS!

DID YOU SEE THIS?

A NEW YEAR GREETING FROM NASA

TODAY IS A MILESTONE FOR THE AIRLINE INDUSTRY:

This is the 100th anniversary of the first commercial flight!  It was a scheduled flight from Tampa to St. Petersburg.  It took 23 minutes across Tampa Bay and had room for only one passenger who sat next to the pilot.  Just like today, there wasn't much leg room and no free food service.

NEW LAWS GOING INTO EFFECT TODAY:  Here's a good one, the Minimum wage goes up in 14 states.

Here's a goofy one, beginning today in Texas, all architects must be fingerprinted.  What the hell is that all about?

And, on a mellow note, beginning today you can buy marijuana, in Colorado, for recreational purposes.  What other purpose could there be?
.

HOPE DANIEL AND JON CAN STAY HOME TODAY: Up to 8 inches of snow in Chicago before the day ends.  What a way to start the year.  Traffic will be a nightmare.

PEOPLE HAVE BEEN CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR FOR THE PAST 4,000 YEARS!  That is one LONG party, baby!

As far as we know, the first celebration of the New Year was in Babylon which they set on the first new moon of the vernal equinox.  That was in the SPRING when the new year SHOULD start.  Celebrating in this cold weather sucks.  Who came up with that lame brain idea?

The same goes for Christmas.  The Bible says the Shepard's were tending their flocks by night when Jesus was born.  The only time they do that, in the Holy Land, is during lambing time in the spring of the year.  NOT in the middle of the winter.

It ain't gonna get any warmer any time soon:  I've just about given up hope of getting through the winter without frostbite.

Wind chills will be 15 to 20 below again today and it will be just as cold tomorrow and Friday morning.

To make matters even worse (if they can get worse)  another arctic front will drop into the area Sunday night and Monday morning.  Wind chills could be as low as 40 below.  That's downright brutal.  It's worse than brutal.....(what comes after brutal?)

Did you make a resolution?

Great news:  Donations to the Rotary's Christmas Lights at Riverside Park went over $90,000 this year.

No hangover here!  My beverage of choice was a glass of Sprite.  If you had told me, when I was 21, that I would spend a future New Years Eve with Sprite I would have thought you were nuts!

To you young kids; party while you can.  Old age will come soon enough and it will let you know when the party is over.

Another great display this year! As usual, the fireworks atop Grandad Bluff woke me at midnight.  As usual, I rolled over and watched them from my bedroom without even getting out of bed.  The show gets more spectacular every year.

I did not know this:

AN UNDERNOTE FROM DONNIE:
"Underwear and the New Year seem to go together in many places.

In Turkey it is a custom for women to withdraw just before midnight to put on red undies, in which to greet the New Year…or whoever they may favor on that eve of tipsy judgement.

Once I was at an Istanbul New Year party and, indeed, shortly before 12:00, all the girls disappeared into the bathroom for a few minutes.  Unfortunately, I was unable to confirm the tradition."

"What I expect from the New Year, one more wrinkle on the forehead, one less wrinkle in the soul."
Greek Poet Odysseus Elytis

DONNIE STARTS A NEW YEAR:
"I'm starting the new year with a bottle of Colombian "Ron Caldas"....and snacks from Wisconsin.".

HERE'S YOUR NEW YEARS BABY!

Murphy's and 15 other laws:
1. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

2. A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.

3. He, who laughs last, thinks slowest.

4. A day without sunshine is like, well, night.

5. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

6. Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don't.

7. Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

8. The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

9. It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end-to-end, someone from California would be stupid enough to try to pass them.

10. If the shoe fits, get another one just like it.

11. The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those, who got there first.

12. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

13. Flashlight: A case for holding dead batteries.

14. God gave you toes as a device for finding furniture in the dark.

15. When you go into court, you are putting yourself in the hands of twelve people, none of whom were smart enough to get out of jury duty.

WHY DO PEOPLE DO THINGS LIKE THIS?
Probably for the same reason that, in my younger Rapid City days, I rode in a pickup that did a 50 foot ramp to ramp jump over the back of a full-grown elephant.

I was never a big fan of the airline but I love this commercial!

ACCORDING TO AN ARTICLE FROM AP the Apple iPhone 55 has the very best all around camera for the new year.
THIS IS JUST TOO GOOD.  I HAVE TO SHARE IT.  Some of you may think it's a bit too raunchy.  All of you might think it's a bit too raunchy.  But, HEY!  "Raunchy" is my middle name!
