A report in the La Crosse Tribune says the average opening date for Lake Pepin barge traffic is March 21st but we, probably, won't see any barges that early this year. Our severe winter has produced 30" inch thick ice on the south end of the lake and a 19" thick ice pack at the north end.
We may start warming up a bit next week but it's going to be a while before we're rid of the ice and snow.
Farmers are getting nervous too. This awful weather may delay getting into the fields for spring planting.
Even Roger, who hates the heat and loves the cold, has had more than enough cold for this season. It's not easy getting the old body out in those freezing temperatures of early morning to feed the animals.
