TUNA SALAD IS CHILLING IN THE FRIDGE
It's warming up and I see some blue sky.  For me, that's tuna time.

Tuna time was Thunders favorite time.  I was thinking of the little guy when I opened the cans.  I sure do miss him.
TODAY IS REMEMBRANCE OF THE DEAD IN THE NETHERLANDS
It's a commemoration for all of the civilians and members of the Armed Forces, in the Netherlands, who have died in wars or peace keeping actions since World War II.

Tomorrow the Dutch will celebrate the liberation of the country from Germany in World War II.

The Dutch half of me just had to call attention to that today.
HOUSTON (TX) SET A WEATHER RECORD THIS MORNING

I haven't heard from Donnie this morning but their temperatures were in the mid-50's so I'm sure their new plants survived.
THE GREATEST SHOW IN WISCONSIN
The University of Wisconsin spring band concert is on your PBS station at 7:00 PM tonight.  I look forward to that show every year.  It's a truly professional presentation that everyone will like.

Here's a lesson I quickly learned in radio.

HAPPY WEEKEND!

A FOGGY START THEN A WARM-UP
The National Weather Service is warning of a thick fog along the Missississippi and Wisconsin Rivers this morning as our temperatures, finally, begin to warm up. High today will be near 60 and tomorrow closer to 65.

IS IT REALLY GOING TO END?

WARMER DAYS AHEAD
59 tomorrow, 64 on Sunday but clouds and rain will still be with us until Monday when the forecast calls for a sunny sky with a high almost to 70.  I hope the end is near!

Frontier Airlines will start charging up to $100 for carry ons for passengers who buy the cheapest fare from a 3rd party website.  If you buy your ticket on Frontier's website, however, you will be allowed to board with ONE carry-on for FREE.

In other words, they want you to book on their website which is cheaper for the airline.  They don't have to pay a fee to the third party.

Don't be surprised when the other airlines start doing the same thing.
DONNIE AND LINDA ARE BITING THEIR NAILS
Donnie says, "We may get a low, tonight, that is 30 degrees below average. With hundreds of dollars of new spring plants outdoors, we're on edge!"

THIS SURE ISN'T FARMERS MARKET WEATHER
The Farmers Market is scheduled to open this afternoon at Cameron Park.  I have a feeling that won't happen with the lousy winter weather we're having.

IT'S NOT FIT FOR MAN OR BEAST IN LA CROSSE

LET'S EAT
Have you been to Ciatti's in Onalaska recently?  They have a new lunch buffet coming soon.  It's only $8.99.

IT'S ANOTHER LOUSY MORNING IN LA CROSSE
We're looking at snow, sleet and freezing rain for the early morning commute.  It's a forecast you might expect in the middle of January but this is the third day of May.  Go figure!

Even the most optimistic people I know are walking around with a frown.  Will it never, ever end???

The National Weather Service says the freezing rain will accumulate up to a tenth of an inch on bridges, overpasses, trees and power lines.  A few roads will become icy causing dangerous driving.  At 1:25 AM, we had freezing rain with icing on tree branches and other external objects in La Crosse.

By the way, Rochester had an average temperature of 32 degrees yesterday.  That's the coldest average temperature ever recorded at Rochester.

BETTER THAN MINNESOTA!
You can't really tell what's going on outside from 5 floors up so I had to go down and find out.

I took a walk over to Co-op.  It's not cold and it's a nice, gentle rain and there's no wind so I've decided this ain't bad at all.  I'd much rather have this than the Minnesota snow.
THE COLD AIR GOES ALL THE WAY DOWN TO TEXAS
At mid-morning, Dripping Springs had temperatures in the 40's.

There's a picture of a baby, on the cover, of the current issue of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC.  The caption reads, "This Baby will live to be 120."

Will you tell me who, in their right mind, would want to live 120 years?  It's hard enough getting through the day without calling the doctor in my young 70's.

Of course, if I did live to be 120, just think of the extra thousands of dollars the doctors, hospitals, pharmaceuticals and insurance companies could make off of me.

Could that be why the labs are working so hard to extend our lives?  After all, it's all about the money, isn't it?

ARE WE CRAZY?
Have you seen the results of the annual Visa survey on the cost for kids going to their high school prom?  According to the findings, parents are spending, on average, $1,078 on prom night this year.  That's 33% more than they spent last year.

Millions of human beings starving to death, every year, around the world and we're spending a thousand dollars on a teenage dance and crying about how hard it is to make a living.

I'm not sure just where this is but it's too close for me.
THE FLOWERS DON'T HAVE A CHANCE.
The forecast calls for temperatures falling to around 34 by noon.  Chance for rain is 100%.  We may get back into the 50's for the weekend.  Please tell me, once and for all, that this is the very last blast of winter.

Guess what I learned today.
Yacht is a Dutch word meaning "pleasure boat."

What would our folks think?
According to U.S.News and World Report, Holmen High School has been rated #14 in its rankings  of the best schools in Wisconsin.

So, they've found the area of the brain that controls ageing.
I'm already well aged.  Unless they find the part of the brain that reverses ageing I think I'm screwed.

Travel light!
Frontier Airlines is set to start charging as much as $100 for carry on items!!!  It's getting to the point where the prices are higher than the airplanes.
Here's a phone that curls up when you get a call!!

Ross Furniture is having a sale so Rita, Roger and I went down to take a look. All we did was look.  Nothing special and over priced. They're moving to a smaller building and the building they've been in for years will be turned into a high end hotel.

I thought Rita looked pretty good in an executive chair.
Bruce Feiler is a columnist for the New York Times and a book author.  He tweeted some good advice this morning.

Artists and photographers will tell you the same thing.  It's not what you put in but what you leave out that makes a great picture.

I think that's true with life too.  Our lives are much too cluttered up with stuff.  We're drowning in stuff.  Less stuff makes for a much better life.

IF I HAVE A CHOICE, I'LL TAKE THE WINE.

I was going to do some spring cleaning today but Rita called and invited me to go furniture shopping with them today.  That sounds like more fun than spring cleaning.  Besides, spring is over.  We're going back to winter, again, for a while.  Don't want to clean too early!

ANOTHER STAR IS GONE

You have to be 100 years old and an old movie fan to remember her but we must mention that Deanna Durbin, a mega-movie star in the '30's and '40's has died at the age of 91.

Deanna was the highest paid movie star in the United States in 1947.

THIS, OF COURSE, DOESN'T DESCRIBE THE SOLBERGS

A LOUSY DAY FOR THE FIRST OF MAY

It's the merry, merry month of May but you wouldn't know it by the weather forecast.
Today
Rain likely, mainly after 5pm. Cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 47 by 5pm. North wind 7 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tonight
Rain. Low around 36. North wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

I mentioned the new bike rental program for New York, yesterday and last night, on the news, I heard that La Crosse will conduct a study into the possibility of a bike rental system here too.

Both Minneapolis and Chicago have bike rental so why not La Crosse?

I hope it becomes a reality. Donnie will like that when he comes for a visit.

I love this quote from Warren Buffett.
"Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks."
--------------------------
"Wisconsin Trails" is a great website you can check out if you click here

Right now they're featuring a neat article on 10 small Wisconsin Craft Breweries that they recommend.

Interesting to note that the PEARL STREET BREWERY right here in La Crosse is on that list.

The brewery name I like best is the Horny Goat Brewing Company in Milwaukee.  They also have a Hot 'N Horny Burger that sounds delicious.
 ----------------------------------
It was 84 at 4:00 PM in La Crosse and the National Weather Service says our high will be around 47 tomorrow with the arrival of the cold front.  That's going to be a bitter pill to swallow after the past two "summer" days.  I'd like to kick old man winter right in the butt about now.

I'm delighted to see that the state finance committee has said "NO" to letting the state run Circus World in Baraboo.
The last thing we need is government running the circus.  The government is already a circus.

THE ROLLING STONES HIT THE ROAD AGAIN.  Only 14 shows this time.  They'll be at the United Center in Chicago on June 3rd.  Cheapest tickets around $800.00.  How many do you want?

I just went down to get the mail.  I couldn't help thinking...it's pretty obvious you're a senior citizen when you have three pieces of mail.  One is junk and the other two are from your doctor.

THE FORECAST CALLS
FOR SNOW IN
SIOUX FALLS TONIGHT

YOU'RE NOT CUTE ENOUGH TO FIGHT WITH

Here is some very good advice!

We just had a little shower move through.  It wasn't supposed to rain until this afternoon, and then only a 30% chance.

It's the next couple of days that are going to be miserable.  There's an 80% chance for rain tomorrow and a 100% chance for rain and snow on Thursday.  The high, today, will be 77.  The high on Thursday: 39.  I'm going to have to get the parka out AGAIN.

I was going to wash clothes today but no need for that when I have two days of rain coming up.  I'll do it tomorrow when I can't get outside.

That's another big change from the past.  We used to need a sunny day to wash clothes so we could hang them outside to dry.  Now we wait for a rainy day to do laundry so we can stay inside and throw them in the dryer.

RUN YOUR ASS OFF LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT!

The Farmers Market in Cameron Park, across the street from the Co-op, opens for the season Friday night.  With rain and snow and temperatures in the 30's and 40's, I will be missing the opening!  Maybe I'll try it on another weekend if we ever have a summer.    The picture is from last summers Farmers Market on a much warmer day!

DID YOU EVER HAVE A DAY LIKE THIS?  I've had a ton of them.
I didn't wake up until 5 A.M.  Half the day is gone by 5 A.M.

I stayed up until 9, last night, watching PBS to see the Queen get crowned again.  I wanted to see it again because I remember the first time I saw it.

It was 1953.  We had just moved to Wisconsin from South Dakota.  I was 13.  Donnie was 6.  Cousin David was Graduating from high school in Waterloo.

Uncle Carl and Aunt Lib were rich.  They had a TV!  Only rich people could afford a TV in those days.  It was another three years before we got a TV.

Anyway, they crowned the Queen and took a million miles worth of film to cover the event.  They rushed the film to the airport, flew it to America and the TV networks broadcast it the next day.

I remember us all sitting in the living room, at Carl and Libs, watching the big event unfold while we waited to go to David's graduation.  Two big events in one day!  Even with my bad memory I couldn't forget that!

So I watched it all again, last night, kind of wishing I could go back there and live it all over again.  If I had known then, what I know now, I would have payed closer attention to all the stuff that happened between then and now.

That's a big problem with life.  We don't spend enough time really paying attention to what's happening right now.  We miss the now while we worry about what happened yesterday or what may happen tomorrow.

Did you see the Bloomberg report on the top 12 boomtowns in the USA?  I see Austin tops the list and Houston, San Antonio and Dallas are also named.  Alas, no boomers in the Midwest.

Ron sent a video about those great old westerns that I can't play here but I've got another one, on that subject, that I think you'll like.  It's from the Statler Brothers.

I was thinking about Roger and his birds and the show they were at in Oshkosh this past weekend.  Then I thought about another person who has a bunch of birds.

Remember Heidi Fleiss?  The Hollywood Madam?  All that is behind her now.  She's out of prison and living with her birds in Nevada.

I think the enjoyment she gets from birds is about the only thing that she and Roger have in common.

I sure am lovin' this weather.  Sunny  sky, warm temperatures.  Everybody is walking around in T-shirts.  I saw a guy driving by in his convertable with the top down.  Spring has sprung........for a couple of days.

Another cold fron arrives Wednesday with highs in the 40's, lows in the 30's and a chance of rain and snow.  Back to the parka.  There's just no end to this winter.
Donnie mentioned that he thought Westheimer, in Houston, was a long street.  I thought I had heard, at one time, it was the longest street in the USA or in the world or something.

Donnie had thought he had heard that
Avenida 9 de Julio in Buenos Aires was the longest.

He and I both did some research.  Turns out that Avenida 9 de Julio is, actually, THE WIDEST STREET IN THE WORLD with up to 11 lanes of traffic.  If you get in one of the middle lanes how the hell would you ever get off??

I did some more research and there are all kids of opinions on the longest street in the USA.

Figueroa Street in Los Angeles is one of the longest at 30 miles.  MacCorkle Avenue in Charleston, West Virginia is 36 miles long and Colfax in Denver runs 26 miles.

I don't know if you can count this but Broadway, in New York, begins at Bowling Green in lower Manhattan and runs all the way to Albany, New York 150 miles away.  The official name of Broadway is, however, Highway 9.

Westheimer Road, in Houston, actually runs about 19 miles.

Now, you know everything you ever wanted to know about the length of streets, and then some!

AUNT EDNA DIED
15 YEARS AGO TODAY

Highway 16 in front of Valley View Mall is closed for most of the week.  That's the first of a couple more closures, this spring, to fix, among other things "crumbling joints".

Hey!  If they want to see some "crumbling joints" that need fixing they should come over here and see me.  I got 'em, big time!

Rita and Roger got home safe from Oshkosh.

Rita said, "Had a great time Saturday night with Susie  and friend Dick. Bird show on Sunday was a bit of a disappointment. Didn't sell much, but there were less vendors and less visitors. This was due to both the weather and the death of Oshkosh's leading parakeet person."

Light rain falling when I got up this morning and, looking at radar, it's going to be around for a while.  There's a good chance for rain every day this week.

I wonder if the farmers will ever be able to plant their crops this year.  If it isn't too cold it's too wet or both.  It's been a goofy spring.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SEINFELD
JERRY IS 59 TODAY

I was just reading that, if you're going to die in your sleep it will, probably, be between 3 and 4 in the morning.  The people who study these things say that's when your body is at it's lowest ebb.

Obviously, they haven't checked with me.  I'm just up and at my best between 3 and 4 in the morning.  I certainly don't have time to die then.  Late in the afternoon would be much better for me.  By then I'm already nodding off.
I've posted the May events on the right sidebar.  Let me know if I forgot anything.

Rita reminded me, the other day, we have to get the flowers ready for the graves again.  That's an annual event but it seems like we just did it yesterday.

TODAY IS ZIPPER DAY
It was April 29, 1913 that Gideon Sundback of Sweden picked up his patent for the zipper...only he called it a hookless fastener.

Zipper is better.  It would sound silly to say I "hookless fastened up my pants."

WHO WANTS A TANK?

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER HIT A CAT!

TEMPERATURES CLOSE TO
80
TUESDAY

Here's a story that should make you sick to your stomach.  The army DOES NOT WANT any more tanks.  They don't need them.  But guess what!

Those friends of yours in Congress INSIST we spend A HALF BILLION of your tax dollars to build more tanks whether the Army wants them or not.

I'm sure it's not that those folks in congress love tanks so much.  But they DO just love all the money the folks who build the tanks will put into the congress persons next campaign fund if they insist the non-wanted, non-necessary tanks be built.

This comes from the same congress who wants to take money OUT of medicare and other "welfare" programs so that they can use the money for the welfare of the members of congress.  You just have to wonder how long the American people are going to put up with this.  READ THE STORY HERE FROM AP

DONNIE HAD A WET AND WILD NIGHT IN HOUSTON

"Well, this is one way to see some rain.

I'm right in the middle of a Houston downpour--nearly 5" just since I got to town, and flooding all around.

I am safe in a motel on Westheimer, and the concert tonight was just a few blocks away, so I could minimize the danger. Many orchestra members didn't make it, but the show went on.

I'm reminded of that Houston storm we drove home in from NASA."

Yes, I remember that scary drive from NASA.  I also remember, years ago, that Aunt Wilda and Uncle Jim came to Houston, while I was living there, and they got caught in a Houston downpour.

When they got home, Aunt Wilda wrote that they planned on calling me to see if we could get together but it was raining so hard that they drove right through the city without stopping.  She said, they had never seen rain like that.

They couldn't have come to see me anyway.  Fountainview, the street I lived on, always flooded almost to my knees in a heavy rain.

I always giggle when people, here, say we had a "heavy" rain.  You folks don't know what heavy rain is until you've been in a tropical rain that comes in off the Gulf.

We had a couple of those when I was working at the airport.  The road to Bush Intercontinental Airport always floods in one of those heavy rains.  Everything comes to a stop.  No planes in.  No planes out.  Arriving passengers can't get out of the airport and departing passengers can't get in.  We earned our money during those heavy rains!
