WHAT IS IT WITH OLD AGE AND TIME?

All I got done today was make the bed, get dressed and go to the library and it's already time for lunch.  I have no idea where the rest of the morning went.

Einstein sure hit the nail on the head.  Time is relative.  The older I get, the faster it goes.

COMMENT:
detMar 4, 2012 07:09 AM
And I recently heard of a real, science-based theory that says time not only seems to speed up as we age...it actually, really does. I can neither explain nor understand that, but if it worries you, look it up! The point is, the older you get, the faster you need to move. Hey, I'm already late, and with no place to go!

JUST TOO CUTE

I DO AND I DON'T

WHITE WEEKEND FOR BOB AND LYNNE

I just read a report that Madison got 5 inches of snow yesterday and MILTON PICKED UP 4 INCHES.

IT WAS A LONG NIGHT IN DRIPPING SPRINGS

DONNIE REPORTS:
"More of the radical temperature fluctuations of this season.  From 80 to 35.  The changes cause the sinus headache that has kept me awake all night, so far.

Since going to bed about 10:30, I have been up four times, for tea and medicine and hot chocolate and more tea.  I've exhausted eMails.  At 3:30 I was mopping the kitchen floor.

Still, these early transitional days before the relentless heat of the long summer are nice enough to almost make it worth the suffering."

IT'S A COLD MORNING IN HOUSTON

WILLARD REPORTS:
"Winds from the north, gusting big time!  Can't open the patio door.  Too cold."

FLU SEASON IS A LITTLE LATE THIS YEAR

I guess I kind of forgot about the flu this year.  Probably because there wasn't any....until now.  Flu cases are being reported and this is the latest start for season in 30 years.  Read more in the La Crosse Tribune.

GOODBYE CONTINENTAL (THERE'S A TEAR IN MY EYE)

With a lump in my throat, I say goodbye to Continental Airlines and I know I'm not alone.  I've only worked at two other companies where the employees were so proud and loyal to the company they worked for.

As of 2:00 A.M. this morning Continental and United Airlines merged their reservation systems and the Continental name moves into the history books. Now, it's all United Airlines and we wish them many successful years of flying.
The first flights to take off under the all new UNITED banner were:
Flights 1122 San Francisco (SFO) to Houston (IAH) and flight 1158 Los Angeles (LAX) to Houston (IAH).  Both fights departed at 12:31 AM Pacific Time.

The LAST FLIGHT FOR CONTINENTAL AIRLINES was Flight 1267 which departed Phoenix, as a Continental flight, at 11:59pm (Pacific time) and arrived in Cleveland, this morning, as a United flight.
COMMENT:

Perhaps the flights to Houston were looking for you.

COLD WEEKEND

34 today 33 tomorrow.  Those are the forecast HIGH TEMPERATURES.  I won't venture far today.  In fact, I may not venture at all.  I'm waiting for Tuesday.  They say our high will be 57.  I've forgotten what 57 feels like but I know that's warm enough for me to leave the parka at home.

IMAGINE LIVING ON $4.40 A DAY

Laborers, apparently, did in 1936 and were glad to get it.  This is from the Wisconsin Historical Society.

1936 - Higher Wages in Janesville
On March 3, 1936 a new state code sets minimum wages for construction workers in Janesville higher than other Wisconsin cities: $1 an hour for masons, 80 cents for cement finishers, 85 cents for carpenters and 55 cents for laborers. Accounting, office and clerical workers in construction trades were also guaranteed $14 a week. [Source: Janesville Gazette]

RULES OF THE ROAD (FAR BACK IN THE COULEE'S)

1. Dim your headlights for approaching vehicles, even if the gun is loaded, and the deer is in sight.

2. When approaching a four-way stop, the vehicle with the largest tires always has the right of way.

3. Never tow another car using panty hose and duct tape.

4. When sending your wife/girlfriend down the road with a gas can, it is impolite to ask her to bring back beer.

5. Never relieve yourself from a moving vehicle, especially when driving.

6. Do not lay rubber while traveling in a funeral procession.

ON A SAD NOTE

There's a very nice article in the LA CROSSE TRIBUNE about a very nice lady who has passed away.  NANCY LISTIAK was a volunteer in the Oncology Department at Gunderson Lutheran.

That's one place, at the Gunderson Clinic, I really enjoy going to every six months.  They have the most beautiful people who work there.  I'm looking forward to my next appointment coming up in the next couple of weeks.

COMMENT FROM RITA
Nancy Listiak was a delightful person. I knew her through her husband, who was the first child psychologist hired by GL. He came because he was a friend of Dr. Beardsley's and I have considered him a good friend for years. Both he and Nancy are/were friendly, down-to-earth, funny people.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

LET ME ADD MY "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" TO Kmart!
The first Kmart opened in Garden City, Michigan on March 1, 1962.

JUST GOT UP FROM A NAP

RITA and I were talking about NAPS today.  It sounded so good, I took one.

"They" say, whoever "they" are, that a nap will refresh your mind, make you more alert, and increase productivity.  "They" are full of snores.  For me, it's just a "time-filler" until bedtime.

By the way, you know what to say if you get caught sleeping at work, don't you?

Just lift your head up, off your desk, while saying, "In Jesus name, Amen".

MINOCQUA CAN HAVE IT

I'm sure glad this last storm decided to go north of us.  I see MINOCQUA GOT HIT WITH 21 INCHES OF SNOW!  There's such a thing as "too much of a good thing" and 21 inches is too much.

I'LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT

The extended forecast says OUR HIGH, NEXT TUESDAY, WILL BE 57 DEGREES.  I find that hard to believe but, I suppose, it's possible and if it happens, I'll break out in serious spring fever.

THE LONGER DAYS ARE COMING FAST

We'll have 11 HOURS 13 MINUTES of daylight today and tomorrow we'll add another 2 MINUTES AND 59 SECONDS.

IF IT'S DOCTOR TIME IT MUST BE SPRING

I'll be spending Monday and Wednesday, of next week at the CLINIC for my round of spring visits to the doctors. Then, on the 12th I get to go back for my favorite treat.  The dreaded COLONOSCOPY.

BIG NAME BIRTHDAYS TODAY

HARRY BELAFONTE is 85 today, RON HOWARD is 58 and JUSTIN BIEBER is now at the ripe old age of 18.

Just think, 18 years old and he's already made enough money to live two or three lifetimes in luxury.

If it's true that you get what you deserve, I sure didn't deserve much!

We lucked out!

We didn't get anything but a couple of rainy days out of the winter storm that moved through the area Tuesday and yesterday.  Other parts of the area, however, got some nasty weather.

10 to 17 INCHES OF SNOW fell along and north of highway 29 between EAU CLAIRE and WAUSAU2 TO 4 INCHES OF SLUSHY SNOW AND SLEET, RAIN AND FREEZING RAIN was also reported north of Interstate 90.

As Paul Harvey used to say, "NOW HERE'S THE REST OF THE STORY"

I was reading the DAVEY JONES obit in the NEW YORK TIMES, this morning, which contained a story I had never heard before.

THE MONKEES were, already, a big act when another young hopeful was also dreaming of becoming a big rock star.  There was a problem, however, with his name.  It was, also, David Jones.  Knowing that TWO Davey Jones could not make it, the newcomer became DAVID BOWIE!

THE BEST NEWS I'VE HEARD ALL WINTER!

My hero of the day is Phil Addis, local businessman, who has bought the HOLLYWOOD THEATER and, if it can be done, he plans to restore the La Crosse landmark and, once again, bring back the magic of the movies.

We were talking about Bev at lunch, the other day, so Rita asked David how she was doing.

"Bev is doing better now.  Her pain has been real bad so they gave her a shot in her spine to abate the pain.  For the most part it is better but it is a fight.  She is tough.  They plan to give her a low dose of chemo when she gets her weight and strength back.  It's a struggle, to say the least."

Here's one HUNGRY mouse!

The extraordinary  scene was captured by photography student Casey  Gutteridge at the Santago Rare Leopard Project in   Hertfordshire. The 19-year-old, from Potters Bar,  Hertfordshire, who was photographing the  leopard for a course project, was astounded By  the mouse's behaviour.
He said: 'I  have no idea  where the mouse came from -he just appeared in  the enclosure after  the keeper had dropped in the meat for the  leopard. He didn't take any notice of the  leopard, just went straight over to the meat and  started feeding himself 'But the leopard was pretty surprised.

Even a gentle  shove does not deter the little creature from  getting his fill... 'It was  amazing, even the keeper who had thrown the meat into the enclosure was shocked - he said  he'd never seen anything like it before.'

Project owner Jackie James added:  'It  was so funny to see -Sheena batted  the mouse a couple of times to try to get it away from her food.'  But the determined  little thing took no notice and just carried  on.' Sheena  was brought in to the Santago Rare Leopard Project  from a UK zoo when she  was just four  months old. She is one of 14 big cats in  the private collection started by Jackie 's  late husband Peter  in 1989.  The African Leopard can be found in the continent's forests, grasslands,  savannas, and rainforests.

RAINDROPS

The rain is raining all around,
It falls on field and tree,
It rains on the umbrellas here,
And on the ships at sea.

Robert Louis Stevenson wrote that and it came to me, this morning, when I heard the raindrops hitting the windows.  That sound makes it official.  I HAVE SPRING FEVER!

The fact that it was rain, and not snow, and the temperature was above freezing, meaning it was water and not ice, filled my head with thoughts of the tulips that will soon follow.

The HIGH WILL BE NEAR 40 TODAY and, as the sun goes down, we could see a few flakes of snow but the weather man says "no accumulation".

That's a forecast that spells "early spring" if I ever heard one.  And, it just gets better.  Tomorrow the sun will return.

I always think of Mother when this time of year rolls around.  We have lost so many, from our family, during the months of spring, and she always said, "If we can just make it through the spring, we'll be all right."

NEVER YELL FIRE IN A THEATER OR DONNIE AND LINDA'S HOUSE

Donnie writes: "Linda was up until 3:00 A.M., then set the oven to self-clean before coming to bed.  At 4:30 I'm awakened by a powerful smell.  Too much cleaning.  The instructions say the cleaning fumes can kill pet birds!

I have a genuine phobia about house fires.  I shut the cycle off, opened the windows and now, anxiously, sit awake until the oven cools down.  Fortunately, it is a mild morning and the cool outdoor air is refreshing".

THINKING OF TAKING A SPRING BREAK?

A travel website TRAVEL TICKER lists the top 5 travel destinations for this spring.

  1. New Orleans
  2. Miami
  3. Lake Tahoe
  4. China
  5. Ecuador

I've already been to the top three so, I guess, my next stop is China.
I've done four of the five, but will not make it to China.

YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY

Donnie has a friend who lives in the state of Washington.

He writes "There are about a million people, around here, named Terpstra.  This part of the world is full of the Dutch.  Lynden, which is about 18 miles to the north, has a huge windmill on its main square along with a 1920-ish Dutch downtown."

WHY ME?

Computer problems, again, this morning.  All was going along fine and, suddenly, no response.  Just sat there.  I used the diagnostic tools.  One screen said I wasn't connected to the internet.  Another screen said I was...which means, of course, that even the computer didn't know what the hell it was doing.

I screwed with it for about a half hour and got nowhere.  My motto is "When in doubt, pull the plug."  I pulled the plug.  Made another cup of coffee.  Plugged it back in and all was fine again.

I suppose I should take a computer course at Tech but Roger did that and he doesn't know any more than I do.

I've only got about 3 hairs left on my head and, one of these days, I'll end up pulling those out too.

HOWIE'S IS BACK

I must have missed HOWIE'S, or I've forgotten it.  Most likely, I've forgotten it.  According to the La Crosse Tribune story, which you can read here, it was quite a popular place at one time.  Looks like it might be a nice new spot to check out.

Below that story is another about the TEXAS ROADHOUSE restaurant that is set to open by the mall in late March.

THE OLDER YOU GET, THE FASTER TIME FLYS BY

I'm not sure I've got enough energy left to "spring forward" anymore but, come fall, I know I'll have no problem "falling back".

HOW BAD CAN THE ECONOMY BE?

Tourists spent a record $1.3 BILLION in HAWAII in January.

det has left a new comment on your post "HOW BAD CAN THE ECONOMY BE?":
Those tourists were probably mostly Chinese. I've been saying it for four years: Things are not nearly bad enough to force Congress to do anything. Of course, things could become bad enough overnight. Meantime, live it up!

WORDS FROM THE BIRTHDAY GIRL

I heard from GLADYS this morning.  She's had about two days of party's, dinner's and coffee gatherings and there are more today.  She said,  "I never expected to live so long and, actually, be able to enjoy it."

FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE TO WATCH OUR SALT INTAKE

From the COOKING LIGHT website, McCutcheon's Marinara is not labeled low-sodium but it is---only 185mg in 1/2 cup.

I JUST DON'T GET IT

36 cars parked on the ice at a fishing tournament in Oshkosh.  Of course, they all ended up at the bottom of the lake.

Wouldn't you think, with the extremely mild winter we've had, people would have enough brains to stay off the ice?

After working with the public, most of my life, I shouldn't be asking that question but I keep hoping I might have been wrong.

IN MY OPINION.....

This should give you an idea of what little regard, to this day, the United States Government has for the American Indian.  The Bureau of Indian Affairs doesn't even keep track of how many Indian reservations there are in the USA.

If you try to look it up you'll find phrases like "there are around" or "there are about" so many but you can't find a hard number.  Best guess is between 300 and 350.

DID YOU WATCH THE OSCAR'S?

A half hour of it was enough for me.  I like what one guy said about "The Artist" on a YOU TUBE clip, "Nobody talks and they still charge you full price."

I watched a really good movie on DVD yesterday.  "The Straight Story" is a  film, released in 1999, based on a true story about Alvin Straight, an elderly gentleman from Iowa who learns that his brother has had a major stroke.

The Brother lives near Prairie du Chien.  Alvin doesn't have a drivers license or a lot of money but he knows he has to see his brother, again, before he dies.  So, he gets on his riding lawn mower and drives it 260 miles, to Wisconsin, for the reunion.

I loved a line from the movie.  Along the way, he meets a lot of folks, including a young man who asks him what the worst thing about getting old is.  Alvin says, "The worst thing about getting old is remembering what it was like when you were young."  Right on, Alvin!

By the way, if you haven't seen the movie I recommend it if you can find it.  For folks around here, it's available at the library (after I take it back).
