YOU THINK YOU KNOW SOMEBODY RICH?

THINK AGAIN!
This Russian gentleman could, probably, buy and sell a lot of millionaires with his pocket change.

A FEW TRAVEL TIPS I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU

This article concerns the new United Airlines but it could be any of the others too.

Note, close to the end of the article, that the customer was savvy enough to keep checking the website for a better fare and she kept at it until she got it.

Something you should realize is that fare availability changes about every 15 minutes for any given flight.  It's all based on bookings, cancellations and seat availability for that particular flight and that keeps changing right up until flight time.

This is why just about everyone on a flight has paid a different fare for the same flight.  It depends on WHEN you booked it and what was available at that moment.

So, if you go to the airlines website and don't see a fare you like, don't give up.  Keep trying again and again to get the best deal possible.

NICE DOGGIE

DONNIE & LINDA'S NEIGHBOR.  This good old boy looks like someone you don't want to push too far.

I'M NOW WITH RITA

I CAN'T STAND ONE MORE CLOUDY DAY!!!
Enough is enough.  So dark out, you have to keep most of the lights on so you can see what you're doing.  I just took the garbage out and nearly froze in the couple of seconds I was out.  Came upstairs and checked the weather and we have a wind chill at 34 degrees at 9:45 A.M.  If I was a bird I'd turn around and fly back south.

MY FIRST MISTAKE OF THE DAY

I grabbed the wrong bottle, in the shower, and washed my face with shampoo.  I can tell you one thing. It doesn't work. My face isn't any more "manageable" now than it was before.

THIS, PRETTY MUCH, EXPLAINS IT FOR A LOT OF POLITICIANS (AND OTHERS) WHO DON'T SEEM TO GET IT

TODAY'S BIRTHDAYS

Shirley Jones AND Richard Chamberlain are both celebrating their 78th birthday today.  Herb Alpert is 77.

Despite his Tijuana Brass, Herb Alpert doesn't have a Latino bone in him. Despite that little deception, he still makes great music.

NICE OVERNIGHT RAIN

The town of Holland got an inch of rain last night.  At the various weather stations around La Crosse we picked up a bit over a half inch.

A POWERFUL VIDEO

SILENT WORLD

BRING BACK THE GOOD OLD 80 DEGREE DAYS!!

I was getting ready to go to Festival and decided I should check radar for rain and the thermometer for temperature.

No rain to worry about but 38 degrees sets off all the alarm bells in my brain.  I miss that week we had when I could walk outside in a T-shirt and be comfortable.  I'm hoping we get some more of those days but the weather has gotten so goofy, I'm not counting on anything.

HOW MUCH DO YOU MAKE?

I ran across an interesting item from the BBC this morning.  A list of countries and the average wage paid to workers in each.

World Wide, the average wage is $1480.00 a month.  Luxembourg has the highest wage earners with an average of $4,089.  The average wage in Norway is $3,678, USA $3,263, Mexico $609.

MORE WILDLIFE AT BOB AND LYNNE'S HOUSE

Again today we spotted 4 turkeys in our woods and the fox came back.  Luckily, Bob was home, this time, to see them.  The fox may have a home in our woods as we have seen him three days now.

DUANE REPORTS MORE FIRES

"Another forest fire in the southern hills yesterday.  About 300 acres burned and it's not contained yet.  I'm afraid this is going to be a bad summer.  We need rain.  No moisture."

THIS IS HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES

Take a look at this and try to imagine how long you could stand living here.  I suppose I could get by except for the bed situation.  My claustrophobia is much too severe to ever get used to that.  In fact, just watching it makes my skin crawl.

One thing she doesn't mention in the video is how much her rent is.  Remember now, this is New York and New York ain't cheap.  Remember also, however, that wages are far, far above what they are around here.  Still, this is going to shock you.

For that apartment, the young lady was paying $700.00 a month!  Shocking, huh?  But, hey, she's a block from Central Park.  A small apartment, like I have here in La Crosse, in that neighborhood, would, easily, cost $3,500 a month.

CAT LOVER ON BOARD

SOUNDS TOO CLAUSTROPHOBIC TO ME

GOT A NOTE FROM GLADYS THIS MORNING

"Spring is definitely in the air.  I do love spring and summer but know it presents many jobs I can ignore in the wintertime.  I have started the big job of getting things together to open the cabin at the lake for the summer."

TOO COLD FOR MY BLOOD

We had a high of 58 yesterday and I was cold all day.  I noticed this morning, however, that our normal, for this time of year, is 51 so, I guess, I can't expect any more that what we have.  Please understand, however, that I still reserve the right to bitch about it.

THE GOOD OLD TV DAYS

Jack Paar hosted the Tonight Show for the last time on March 29, 1962.  After Jack left, I never stayed up late anymore.

There will never be another Jack Paar and there, without a doubt, will never be another Oscar Lavant.

THERE ARE SOME SMART ONES!

Are there any really smart celebrities?  Sure are!  Watch this.

WHAT NEXT?

I just now read that business cards are history.  Folks don't use them anymore.  Another casualty of the digital age.  They're as out of date as I am.

I retired with boxes of business cards, emblazoned with exotic places names--Istanbul, La Paz, Montevideo--and impressive titles--Cultural Attache, Member of the Board--and I thought I'd just put my retired address on the flip side and continue to use them...only to discover that in six years I haven't met anyone who cared to keep my contact info. So now we use the cards to mark our books and make notes and post reminders. Welcome to anonymity!

BOB AND LYNNE SHOULD OPEN A ZOO

LYNNE WRITES:
"I saw a movement outside, looked up from my laptop, and there was a fox in the woods, just off the yard.  We wonder if there is a den somewhere near.  It ran into our neighbors yard so not sure where it will be seen next."

IT'S ONLY MONEY HONEY

I wonder if I could spend $476 MILLION before I die?  I sure would give it a try!

Friday nights MEGA MILLIONS LOTTERY is for that record amount of $476 million.

The first thing I'd do is find some company that will make me a recipe file box.  Everybody sells the file cards but I can't find a file box to put them in.  I've got one from my Sioux Falls day but the top broke off.

I just find it faster and easier to keep addresses, phone numbers, etc. on index cards rather than in the computer.  Maybe I'm the only one left that's that old fashioned.

FIRE!

Sounds like the BLACK HILLS could use some rain.  DUANE said, "Every day we are having grass fires in town or forest fires in the hills."

As I told him, it's too early in the season to be having those fires.

EASTER PLANS

Oh, Goodie!  PAUL, DOROTHY AND UNCLE BOB WILL JOIN US FOR EASTER so the local members of the clan will all be in one place.  Rita said, "Watching the papers for a good place."

IT'S ISTANBUL NOT CONSTANTINOPLE

Donnie never made it to Constantinople.  By the time he got there it was Istanbul.  In fact, it was 83 years ago today that it became "Istanbul not Constantinople".  (remember that song?)

SECOND HOMICIDE THIS MONTH

La Crosse isn't gaining in population but it's experiencing some of the bad things folks usually associate with big city life.

The second murder this month, in La Crosse, involved a 20 year old Western Tech student.

This latest tragedy hit close to home.  The murder was in my neighborhood and the victim was a graduate of West Salem High School.  It also reminded me of the murder that took place in my apartment complex while I was living in Houston.  Read the full story HERE in the La Crosse Tribune.

JUST SAW IT ON TWITTER

Bob Barker, who grew up on the Rosebud Rez about the same time Mother and Dad were there is willing to pay the price for his love of animals.  He's paying the price to fly three elephants to a sanctuary.  The price?  $880,000.

SOMETHING'S BLOOMING THAT MY NOSE HATES

I'm so stuffed up I can hardly hear while, at the same time, my nose won't stop running.  I'm going through Puffs like crazy.  I've got a song that fits the situation.

BLOWIN' IN THE WIND
BY
PETER POLLEN MARY

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE BOOMSTICK?

The TEXAS RANGERS have it at their ballpark.  A one pound hot dog with onions, chili and cheese on a special bun.  The price tag is as big as the wiener.  $26.00 for each dog.  Junk food and gluttony at an outrageous price.  Long live America.

STARRING WHO????

New movie soon to go into production telling the story of the White House butler who served all the presidents from Truman to Reagan.

Guess who has been signed to play Nancy Reagan.

JANE FONDA!!

STEP RIGHT UP, FOLKS

In his New York Times column, Frank Bruni says the media has turned the campaign into a kind of circus by encouraging too many clowns.  That, about, sums it up.

But, after seeing this WOODEN TIES FOR MEN NOW....I think I've seen everything.  I'm trying to think of someplace where I'd like to wear a wooden tie.  Ah, Ha!!  It just came to me.  A wooden tie to go with my wooden shoes when I visit Pella, Iowa.

STAY AWAY FROM ME~~I DON'T LIKE ANYTHING

DONNIE REPORTS ON HIS LATEST DISCOVERY
Spent the morning at the bookstore reading news magazines.  I learned of a new "app" that would enable your cellphone or iphone to alert you when you are near a person who shares your interests.
For example, I program my phone with the fact that I like Fats Domino.  The phone will then buzz (or, perhaps play "Blueberry Hill") when I am within a certain distance of another person who has also programmed an appreciation for Fats Domino.  What this is supposed to accomplish is not yet clear to me.
I keep thinking there must be a limit on the usefulness of technology.  Of course, how much these things actually improve life remains to be seen.

HIGH COST OF HIGH FLYING

Southwest and Jet Blue have raised their fares.  The airlines are getting hit with high fuel prices too.

COLORING EASTER EGGS

Roger sent this picture from the 1960's of three kids coloring easter eggs.  I had no idea who they were until he told me.  Then I could pick them out right away.
They're Rogers kids; Rhonda, Renee and Rick.  Such a cute picture!

LOOK WHAT BOB AND LYNNE HAVE IN THEIR BACK YARD!!!

LYNNE WRITES
"Now we have wild turkeys in our woods.  It has been a few years since they came for a visit but this morning I spotted two of them.  They didn't come to the bird feeders as in the past.

When you mentioned the Platters, I thought back to our first cruise in 1993.  The guests were the Platters with one of the originals performing.  He saw me with my camcorder and came to the edge of the stage, smiled and waved at me."

SPEAKING OF TURKEY

MISERABLE DAMN WEATHER

Last week we were walking around in shirt sleeves.  Today is parka weather again.

I got to the store and back but there are very few things that would entice me to go outside again.  It's cold and wet and just plain miserable.

Tomorrow, they say, we could get thunderstorms with damaging winds gusting to 40 MPH.

We could hit 70 tomorrow but highs will drop back to the 50's on Wednesday and continue through the rest of the week.  I think this is Mother Nature's way of reminding us that, despite the recent warm weather, this is still March.

By the way, below are the average dates for a last freeze in La Crosse and Rochester.

SMILING TIGER

TIGER WOODS posted a Tweet on TWITTER about 8 o'clock, last night (CDT), saying "Heading home now and I can't stop smiling".  I'll bet he's still smiling this morning.

LET'S DO BRUNCH

Forget the cooking and the mess and the clean up.  RITA tells me that she and KATHY have decided we'll do brunch for EASTER this year.  Sounds good to me.

Easter reminds me of the year that Rita, DONNIE and I decided to color Easter eggs.  I'm sorry I don't have any pictures of that mess.

I KNEW IT HAD TO END

I just knew, when we had that long stretch of sunny days with temperatures hovering around 80, that the real world would come back to remind us that everything is always changing and that's especially true of the weather.

It got to Rita first and, now, it's getting to me.  I long for those sunny, warm days again..and they will return...but not for awhile.

First we have to slosh through these last traces of winter with dark clouds, chilly temperatures and rain for a few days.  At least, it won't be cold enough to snow.

Today, we won't get out of the 40's and there's a 60% chance for rain.  That's what I call a BLUE MONDAY.  Remember that song?

NEW PLACE FOR YOUR SUNGLASSES

Duane said, "I saw a new trend today.  Young men are wearing their sunglasses on the back of their necks rather than on their hair or caps."

I couldn't figure this out, at first, so I grabbed my sunglasses and tried it.  Sure enough.  It works!  I like it better than the "on the head" thing.

Comment from Willard
"Duanes note about sunglasses was started by a Food Network personality, Guy Gerrari who is on "Diners, Drive-in's and Dives".
COMMENT FROM DONNIE
"You boys need to get out more often!   Young people have been doing this so long that old people are now doing it.

What I can't bear is the goatee.  How much longer are going to have to look at those things?  They are very much past their fashion prime.
