FASCINATING

You walk through a door into the room and....you know you came in here for something but you can't, for the life of you, think what it was.

It's happened to most of us.  Why do we forget??  Scientists think they have the answer.  Very interesting article.  READ IT HERE

THE LAW OF PROBABILITY
The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act.

WILDLIFE

DONNIE SAYS: "STAND CLEAR"!
"We have seen a skunk in the neighborhood, two days running, mid-afternoon; a scrawny-looking thing--given prevalence of rabies in skunks, this one bears watching: the front end may be more dangerous than the rear."

WEATHER

I'M GLAD IT'S THEM AND NOT US!
Snow hitting the Black Hills hard!  As of 8:00 A.M. there's 12 inches on the ground in Custer, 7 inches in Pierre and 9.9 inches in Rapid City.

AIN'T IT THE TRUTH?

WORD FOR THE DAY: LIQUIDITY
Definition: Liquidity is when you look at your retirement funds and wet your pants.

TRAVEL

The bad news for folks, around here, planning to go out tonight is that the roads could become slippery. The good news is, if we get any snow at all it will be less than an inch.

TRAVEL

You've got to see this.  It's in the L.A. TIMES: TRENDY KID LUGGAGE

I'll bet they'll sell a lot of that this Christmas!

WEATHER

Winter has arrived FULL BLAST in western South Dakota.  The forecast calls for 6 to 10 inches of snow along the northeastern foothills, of the Black Hills from Black Hawk to Spearfish.  Winds will pick up causing blowing snow and wind chills will drop as low as 5 below.  That snow will, eventually, track into Wisconsin but (thank God) north of La Crosse.

TRIVIA

GUESS WHAT I JUST READ....
There are 14,725 golf courses in the USA and the area of land they cover is almost equal to the size of Delaware and Rhode Island combined.

THANKSGIVING

They're expecting 3 to 4 thousand at the free La Crosse Community Thanksgiving Dinner.  I'm going to a free Thanksgiving dinner (at least, I think it's free).  Mine is at Rita and Roger's.  I don't think they're expecting 3 to 4 thousand but you never know.  Rita always says, "the more the merrier"......or something like that.

GOOF

FUNNY?

My friend, Gary, sent this.  I say that so that you know it didn't come from me!

WOMEN
A woman is mans best friend.
She will never stand him up and never let him down.
She will reassure him when he feels insecure and comfort him after a bad day.
She will inspire him to do things he never thought he could do; to live without fear and forget regret.
She will enable him to express his deepest emotions and give in to his most intimate desires.
She wil make sure he always feels like the most handsome man in the room and will enable him to be the most confident, sexy, seductive and invincible.

NO...WAIT....Sorry.

I'm thinking of whiskey.  Whiskey does all that.

Never mind.

DOGS

IF THIS DOESN'T BRING A TEAR TO YOUR EYE I'LL BE SURPRISED.

DREAMS

I had another radio dream last night.  One of the reacurring ones.  Locked out of the control room and the record is running out.

I don't know about the young people, in radio, today but us old timers all know about the radio dreams.  We've all had them...over and over again.

Things are so different now but, back in my time, radio wasn't a job.  It was our life, 24 hours a day, seven days a week and when we weren't living it we were dreaming about it.

I honestly never knew what "working" was like until I left radio and went to work for the airline.  I was almost 40 years old and someone had to show me how to use a time clock.  I had never seen one.  I quickly learned what it was like to get up and think, "I really don't want to go to work today".  That never happened in the radio days.  We weren't working.  We were having fun and getting paid for it, which was silly because we would have done it for nothing.

WEATHER

WINDY DAY AHEAD
ENJOY!

STUFF

There seems to be some confusion about when USE LESS STUFF DAY really is but Hallmark says it's today so I'll go with that.

Actually, I guess, Use Less Stuff Day should be everyday.  I'm not alone.  There are a lot of people like me (and you know who you are).  I don't have any money but I've got lots of stuff.  It clutters up the apartment, my life and the planet.

I've got stuff stored in the basement that I haven't used or touched since I moved in here 15 years ago.  And, most of that stuff, I dragged up here all the way from Houston.  Stuff that I didn't use down there either but "you never know when you may need it".  That's true but, if you're like me, there's so much stuff that, when you need it, you never know if you'll be able to find it.  Most of the time, I can't.

This is a good time of year to think about too much stuff.  We're going into the season that should be about love and caring.  Alas, we've turned it into a season of greed and obligated sharing.

HOW TRUE

Sly Campbell @DesktopDollars on TWITTER said, "10 years ago we had Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Steve Jobs.  Now, there's no cash, no hope and no jobs"

I couldn't have said it better myself.

BOOKS

I can't put the new Bobby Fischer biography down.

"End Game" by Frank Brady is a great read.  I recommend it.

HOLIDAYS

HOLIDAY FAIR is at the La Crosse Center through Sunday.  I enjoyed working at the hotel during Holiday Fair.  So many nice folks come every year to display their holiday items for sale.  You'll see a lot of great Christmas items if you go.

BILLBOARDS

TV

There isn't much on TV I'll stay up to watch but Betty White turns 90 in January and NBC is planning a big special in her honor.  That should be a lot of fun.

LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE:

THE LAW OF MECHANICAL REPAIR
After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will begin to itch and you'll have to pee.

DONNIE AND LINDA HAD ANOTHER VISITOR THIS MORNING

THE GOLDEN YEARS

I scrubbed the kitchen floor this morning.  Getting up and down gets harder every time I do it.  The joints creak and crack like they need oil.

When I got done I was sitting on the floor watching it dry and thinking.....when you're young and you have an ache or a pain you know it's going to get better.  But, when the golden years arrive, you realize that no matter how bad it hurts and how lousy you feel..you're never , ever, going to feel any better.  If I didn't have a full bottle of antidepressants close at hand I probably could feel really miserable thinking about it.

SNOWY WEEKEND OUT WEST

I just noticed that Worland could get around an inch on Friday and Duane said Rapid City could see 4 inches on Saturday.  It looks like central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin will see the snow on Saturday night while we get a mix of freezing rain and snow.  Sounds like winter to me.

EASY GARLIC CHICKEN

Oooooh!  This sounds so good and even I could eat it.  It's so simple I'll have to try it out.  I knew I bought chicken breasts for something yesterday.

CAPTURE WISCONSIN

Here's a great Christmas gift idea for someone who loves Wisconsin and great photos.  CAPTURE WISCONSIN is a new coffee table photo album of some of the greatest views of the state.  Take a look at the book right here.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GORDON LIGHTFOOT~73 TODAY

NEW THEATER

They sure didn't waste any time making the new downtown theater a reality.  Groundbreaking ceremonies were held yesterday.  GET THE FULL STORY HERE IN THE LA CROSSE TRIBUNE.

WEATHER

The change of seasons is always a bit of a roller coaster ride.  Today will only see highs in the 30's but tomorrow we'll be up around 50!  That, pretty much, sets my game plan.  Inside chores today.  Outside chores tomorrow.

DONNIE'S RAIN REPORT

" As for the rain, as usual, we got less than everyone else, barely 1/4", while some Austin areas got a full inch.  We will still end the year with barely 1/4 of the annual average rainfall."

DRIPPING SPRINGS STORM

That hours worth of rain that fell on Donnie and Linda, yesterday, must have had some wicked thunder and lightening with it.  I see one house in Dripping Springs, hit by lightening during the storm, is being declared a total loss.

SUNRISE ON 3RD STREET

"THE SOUND OF MUSIC" OPENED ON BROADWAY ON THIS DATE IN 1959

WEATHER

I was looking ahead and the forecast says we might get close to 50 Friday and Saturday but, I'm thinking, that's the last we'll see of weather that warm for several months.  Most days in the coming week show highs in the more seasonal range of 30's and 40's.

As they say, 'Tis the season.

A LITTLE TRIVIA......

I'm reading the new biography of chess champion Bobby Fischer, "END GAME" by Frank Brady which, by the way, is fascinating.  I came across this bit of trivia which should interest Donnie and Linda since they've been there.

Icelands Parliament was founded in 930 A.D., during Viking times, and it's still going strong making it the oldest Parliament in the world.  Sounds like that's a government that must be doing something right!

And, here's something else about Iceland.  Every year LONELY PLANET picks the best travel destination for the New Year and this year they picked ICELAND as the place to visit.  CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THE STORY

THIS IS THE NEATEST NEWS OF THE DAY

US Foods and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board have announced the winners of the WISCONSIN CHEESEBURGER CONTEST.  The winners were picked by restaurant customers across the USA who voted  on creativity, originality and trend setting ideas in cheeseburgers that included Wisconsin cheese.

I just loved seeing that one of the winning cheeseburgers from food establishments in the USA came from the The Grand Oasis in the little town of Mobridge, South Dakota!!

The timing for this was unbelievable considering that I spent a Thanksgiving in Mobridge many, many, many decades ago.  And, I love this...the name of their cheeseburger is the SOUTH OF THE BORDER CHEESEBURGER.  Indeed, Mobridge is just "south of the border".....from North Dakota!

I probably won't get back to Mobridge in this lifetime but, if I do, I will stop in and try one of those cheeseburgers before stopping off, again, to pay my respects at the final resting place of Sitting Bull just outside of town.

GOOD NEWS FROM DONNIE

"We did, at last, get a good hour of rain. I was out in it, filling all our large containers with roof run-off."

THE CATHOUSE IS A HIT!

Thunder's carrier was taking up too much room in the closet so I brought it into the living room, laid some carpet on the floor, and put it in a corner where he could relax but still keep an eye on me.  He, quickly, decided that this is his new "favorite spot".  He spends a good part of his day in there doing what cats do; sleeping and watching.

BERT HAS BEEN THERE! DONE THAT.

I might have known that Bert has been to the bar in Vegas (see below). She said, "It was my favorite place in Las Vegas. That is where I met my best friends Kath, Tom, Pete and Julie. We had a blast!!!"

SHORT TIMER

Rita stopped over with coupons, this morning, and she wants everyone to know that she's down to 18  and a half days  of work left!

FROM DONNIE:

"Radar shows large storm line heading our way within the next 90 minutes.  I am brewing tea and will sit on the porch and wait.  The air is still and balmy, and the eastern sunrise is quite bright and mostly clear, but red..."red in the morning...."

HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT

There's one good thing about being bald. You don't have to worry about your hair when the wind blows. It looks like those winds will be pretty brisk around here today.

By this afternoon will see the wind blowing at 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts to 40 MPH on the bluff tops.

WONDER IF BERT HAS BEEN TO THIS BAR?

GOT A NOTE FROM RITA

She says Target also has it's own brand of fabric softener that's very good.

She also said, "We love the Texas Roadhouse".

Monday, November 14, 2011

About this time of year, Thunder always wonders what happened to the "birdies".

He spends half the summer sitting in the window and watching them fly by.  Up here on the 5th floor we have a non-stop show as the birds nest on the roof and fly down, past our window, to the trees or ground looking for food.  Then they fly back up when danger approaches....like an outdoor cat!

By late fall, the birds are gone and the "birdport" closes for the season.

Donnie sent the picture below of the birds, lined up, in their back yard.  I showed it to Thunder and told him the birdies will stay in Texas, with Donnie and Linda, and be back up here in the spring.

LYNNE WRITES:

"I must try "Nice" on our clothes. Bet it is cheaper than the name brands too.

Good fine on American Eagle airlines. That would be horrible to sit on a plane that long. I want to get up and down as fast as possible.

Peanut Butter Vodka? Never tasted it but I would think I would prefer peanut butter on toast (especially slicing a banana on top).

I had a busy week as Delilah(Daniel and Jon's dog) and Mittens(nephew Carl's 19 year old cat) stayed at the same time. They got along just fine and we had many cute times with them.

Daniel and Jon were in Florida with Sandy in Ft. Myers. Carl and the family were in Ketucky. Daughter, Ellie, almost 12, competed in Horseback National Competitions and went undefeated in all. She has so many ribbons and trophies. We are all very proud of her.

We had 2" of snow the other day but it melted quickly. We are not liking the darkness so early now but nothing we can do about it."

Gotta give credit where credit is due.

Walgreen's has a new house brand called "NICE".I bought a box of their fabric softener, the other day, and used it in the wash this morning.

I've been washing clothes for 50 years and used all the brands from expensive to cheap and I've never had clothes come out of the dryer as soft as my clothes were today.

I don't know what they're doing different but this softener is beyond nice.  They should have named it "FANTASTIC".

HEFTY FINE!

Wow!  A $900,000.00 fine for keeping passengers cooped up in planes, on the tarmac, for three hours back in May.  I'll bet American Eagle won't do that again!

What will they think of next?

PEANUT BUTTER VODKA??
Sounds good but can you spread it on a slice of bread?  Hey! I'm not kidding. Check out the bottle here.

Nap time.

I never thought about this before but there may be something to it.

Tom Sietsema, a food critic for the Washington Post, says you can, usually, be satisfied with a restaurant that is named after the owner.  If they're willing to put their name on the sign they, probably, are well known and have a history of good food.

Happy birthday, Prince Charles! 63 today.

I just finished a book by New York Times best selling author Bruce Feiler.  "WHERE GOD WAS BORN" is not his latest book, it was published in 2005, but it's an excellent travel and history lesson on the Middle East.  It's also a wonderful study of the Old Testament.  You might discover a world of things you didn't know or understand about the Bible.

As Wikipedia puts it, he's a popular American writer on faith, family and finding meaning in everyday life.

Feiler will be the guest of Anderson Cooper, on his new syndicated talk show, on Friday.

I recommend the book and watch the TV show, if you can.  I'm sure it will be an interesting hour.

Sunday, November 13, 2011

Aunt Wilda called around noon today.

She had tried to call Uncle Bob to see how his surgery went but there was no answer.

She had been sleeping.  She's been so tired, lately, and has been sleeping a lot.  She's also having trouble with her eyes so she can't read as much as before and, I know, she doesn't like that.

THE GREAT WHITE HUNTERS

AND THE BIBLE SAYS:

They're back!!

Carl said, "Roger, Rita, Kathy and I are comfortably at home. Good (and successful) trip but nice to be back."

Rita called and reported about the same thing.  They stopped in Mission and put flowers on baby sisters grave.  She said Carl took a picture and will send it.

And, who was the winner at the casino??  Kathy, of course!

This reminded me of the beautiful holiday windows Doerflingers used to have years ago.

I walked by Monet Florists and noticed they had their Christmas window on display.  I thought it was really nice.

A WISCONSIN FOOD ARTIST

Interesting story and pictures from NPR about a lady who turns Wisconsin cheese into art.
NPR~WISCONSIN CHEESE

I assume Rita, Roger, Carl and Kathy got home safely.

I haven't heard anything to the contrary and, like they say, no news is good news.

They say we could get some light rain this morning.

Radar is showing some patches of rain to the west but they're pretty spotty.  We, for sure, aren't going to see much sun.  Heavy, dark clouds, overhead, as the sun comes up.
