Happy Birthday Van Morrison/68 today.

DON'T EVEN ASK HOW I DID.

Your Yearly Dementia Test (only 4 questions)

Yep, it's that time of year again for us to take our annual senior citizen test.

Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of the muscles. As we grow older, it's important
to keep mentally alert. If you don't use it, you lose it!

Here is a very private way to gauge how your memory compares to your last test.
Some may think it is too easy, but the ones with memory problems may have difficulty.

Take this test to determine if you're losing it or not.

The spaces below are so you don't see the answers until you've made your answer.
OK, relax, clear your mind and begin.

#1. What do you put in a toaster?

Answer:
'bread.' If you said 'toast', just give up now and go do something else.
And, try not to hurt yourself.

If you said, bread, go to Question #2.

# 2. Say 'silk' five times. Now spell 'silk.' What do cows drink?

Answer:
Cows drink water. If you said 'milk,' don't attempt the next question.Your brain is already over-stressed and may even overheat.Content yourself with reading more appropriate literature such as Women's Weekly or Auto World. However, if you did say 'water', proceed to Question #3.

# 3. If a red house is made from red bricks anda blue house is made from blue bricks anda pink house is made from pink bricks anda black house is made from black bricks, what is a green house made from?

Answer:
Greenhouses are made from glass.
If you said 'green bricks', why are you still reading this??? PLEASE, go lie down!

But, if you said 'glass,' go on to Question #4.

# 4. Do not use a calculator for this:

You are driving a bus from New York City to Philadelphia.
In Staten Island, 17 people got on the bus.
In New Brunswick, 6 people get off the bus and 9 people get on.
In Windsor, 2 people get off and 4 get on.
In Trenton, 11 people get off and 16 people get on.
In Bristol, 3 people get off and 5 people get on.
And, in Camden, 6 people get off and 3 get on.

You then arrive at Philadelphia Station.

Without going back to review, how old is the bus driver?

Answer:
Oh, for crying out loud!

Don't you remember your own age?!?! It was YOU driving the bus!

If you pass this along to your friends, pray they do better than you.

PS: 95% of people fail most of the questions!

THIS IS INTERNATIONAL BACON DAY. WHAT ARE YOU HAVING FOR BREAKFAST?

THIS IS NOT GOOD NEWS FOR SOUTH DAKOTA

The latest survey by the Game, Fish and Parks Department shows a 64% drop in the pheasant population in the past year.  They point to several reasons including a severe drought last summer, a cold, wet spring this year and the conversion of conservation reserves into crop land.

I'LL BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW THIS.

REMEMBER THIS GREAT OLDIE?

LOVE THESE SHOES.

YOU STILL HAVE UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF SEPTEMBER TO SEE THE RINGLING BROS. BELL WAGON AT THE BARABOO MUSEUM.

After that, it's headed back to Ellenton, Florida which is the home of the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus headquarters.  The bell wagon has been on loan to the museum in Baraboo but Feld Entertainment plans to use the wagon in celebration of their 50 years of owning the circus.

The last time I saw the Greatest Show on Earth was in Washington D.C., with Donnie several years ago.

If you've never seen the bell wagon, here's a clip.

FRED MacMURRY WAS BORN ON AUGUST 31, 1908 IN KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS BUT RAISED IN MADISON AND BEAVER DAM WISCONSIN.

WE'RE LOOKING AT PERFECT WEATHER FOR THE WEEKEND.

After some morning fog, the sun will come out and our afternoon high will be right around 82.  We need some rain and there's a 50% chance we'll get some, in the form of thunderstorms, tonight.  The heat wave is history, kids!!

22 DAYS TO AUTUMN

PIGGY'S HAS A TWEET FOR YOU.

FINALLY! COOLER WEATHER IS ON THE WAY!!

Forecast high for tomorrow: 84
Forecast high for Sunday: 79
Forecast high for Labor Day: 72

We can turn off that awful air conditioner, open up the windows and let the fresh air in!

LOOK AT THESE AMAZING SUNFLOWERS RITA GREW THIS SUMMER.

I don't think I've ever seen sunflowers that tall.

DID YOU KNOW THAT, INCLUDING HIS NBC SHOW, DAVID LETTERMAN IS NOW THE LONGEST RUNNING LATE-NIGHT HOST IN HISTORY.

THE THIRD ANNUAL LA CROSSE BIKE FESTIVAL BEGINS TODAY

Bikers will meet at Cameron Park to go on several different guided bike tours.  There are tours around town and longer tours of 50, 75 or 100 miles around the Coulee Region....if you think your legs can handle it.  Pushin' those pedals for 100 miles would be too much for me at my age!  Although, with enough of those toasted marshmallow shooters, I'd, probably, give it a try.

HERE'S THE FIRST HINT THAT WINTER IS ON ITS WAY AGAIN.

LOVE THIS GUY

HOLIDAY SHOOTER

HEY!  A GREAT WAY TO CELEBRATE TOASTED MARSHMALLOW DAY......WITHOUT THE MARSHMALLOWS!
This guy belongs on Third Street.

BARBARA EDEN

Barbara Eden at 82 is still looking good with a little help, I'm sure, with a good plastic surgeon.

By the way, Barbara Eden and I have something in common.  We both went to the same acting school in San Francisco....not at the same time, however.

KITTEN RESCUE

Don't tell me New York doesn't have a heart!
Hat's off to New York's MTA for shutting down the B and Q public transit lines in Brooklyn after a woman reported her two kittens were loose on the tracks.  It took about seven hours to find the felines but they did find them safe and sound.

Passengers took the delays in stride.  In fact, some of them offered to help look for the kittens but officials declined the help due to safety concerns.

WEATHER

There were some thunderstorms around Eau Claire early this morning.  Around La Crosse there's only about a 20% chance for rain this afternoon.  Temperatures will be around 90 again, this afternoon, but the end is in sight.  Our heat wave should begin to break down over the Labor Day weekend.

FAMOUS BIRTHDAY

Happy Birthday to R. Crumb, creator of Fritz the Cat.  He turns 70 today.

MARSHMALLOW DAY

We're celebrating toasted marshmallow's today.  That reminds me, years ago, it was early autumn and Roger built a fire in his back yard fire pit and we all got around it and toasted our weenies.  I think we toasted our marshmallows too but I'm not sure about that.  I do remember roasting our weenies, however.  Once you've roasted your weenie you don't, soon, forget it.

I was hoping that might become an annual event but we never did it again.

LETTERMAN

Did you see Bill Murray on Letterman's 20th anniversary show last night?

FASTING

No coffee this morning.  This means I'm not my usual cheerful self.  Going without food is not a problem.  Even the thought of food, first thing in the morning, gags me.  But, going without coffee is a real sacrifice.

You can bet I'll be at that clinic by 7:30.  I'll be standing in line before there's anyone at the desk to cheerfully receive me.

"Take my damn blood and let me have my coffee"!!

I wonder if anyone has ever died from lack of coffee?  I'm sure I'll be close to death by 8:00 A.M.

HEAT

It turned out to be another hot one.  At 4PM it was 92 in La Crosse with a heat index of 99.  No afternoon walk today!

MY DAY

I was all set to do something really constructive today.  It was almost noon so I decided to have lunch first.  Then I had to do the dishes.  Then I sat down to read a book and got so engrossed I read for two hours.

By the time I was ready to do that constructive thing....I had forgotten what it was I was going to do.  Maybe I'll think of it tomorrow.

It's good to be retired.

VACATION

WE FINALLY GOT SOME PICTURES FROM UP NORTH!
Reminds me of "Gilligans Island"  That's the Skipper on the right.  Mr. Howell on the left.
And, we catch Ginger on the poop deck.

VIRUS

Having been put down by a virus, not once, but twice, I did some research on which sites are most likely to have a virus attached to them.  What I found was interesting.

According to Symantec, a leader in protecting your computer against bugs, you're THREE TIMES more likely to pick up a virus from a CHURCH site than you are a porn site!!

One reason for this is that Porn sites make more money off the web than, probably, anybody else and they know it's bad business to infect their clients computers.  They'll do everything they can to prevent hackers from getting to them.

Hackers are really bad people so they'll hack into websites that you would least expect to be dangerous.  Like those church sites.

The best advice I've found is to make sure you have a good program, installed, on your computer to detect malware and then check it often to make sure you're virus free.  I'm now checking mine about every other day to make sure my files are clean.  It's easy to remove most viruses if you catch them quickly.

CATS

CAT LOVERS: CHECK OUT THE TOP 10 CAT VIDEOS!

SCIENCE

I know you're hot.  You wish it would cool off.  Wouldn't it be nice if there was a switch on the sun and you could just turn it off for a while.  Of course, you wouldn't want to leave it off too long.

Within a year, without the sun, the average temperature, around the globe, would be 100 degrees below zero.  Then you'd be complaining about the cold.

Some people are just never happy.

HEALTH

I have to begin a 12 hour fast, this evening, for a blood draw in the morning.  My six month round of doctor visits begins again.

ANNIVERSARY

It was 16 years ago, today, 1997, that I arrived in La Crosse to take up residence one last time.  There sure have been a lot of changes in those 16 years!

UW LA CROSSE

The enrollment at UW-La Crosse is the highest it has been in 15 years.  You can sure tell it around here, too.  We've had a lot of new folks moving into the building in the past month, or so.  Looking at this picture reminds me that this heat will pass and we'll be putting on layers of clothes, again, real soon!

DONNIE'S PHOTOS

Donnie is showing off again.  Some of his pictures are on display at a local coffee shop.

Speaking of photos, here's a neat one from National Geographic.  Imagine getting to work in this every morning!  Love the kids hanging on the outside.  I'll bet you won't find a seat belt law within a thousand miles of that cable car!

WEATHER

Another sunny, hot day for La Crosse.  The high will be around 85 but, with the humidity, it will feel more like 95.  North central Wisconsin could get some strong storms, with hail, this afternoon.

There's a big area of stormy weather over North Dakota, this morning, from Bismarck to Minot, moving toward Minnesota.

ANNIVERSARY

Carl and Kathy yesterday.  Donnie and Linda today.  This calls for a song.

WORDS

First there was "Terp" but now the Oxford Dictionary has added some new words and we have a couple that rhyme with Terp.  I'll pass them along so you don't get confused.

There's Derp: Speech regarded as stupid or meaningless or to comment on a foolish or stupid action.

I run across a lot of things, during my day, that I find stupid or meaningless.  Maybe I'll post them under a column entitled TERPS DERPS.

The other new word of interest is "Twerk".  This new word refers to dancing to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.

Let me make this perfectly clear right now.  You will never see this Terp doing a "twerk" any time, any place, anywhere.  Terps Twerk is OUT!

Of course, I can't speak for Donnie.

FUNNY WEATHERMAN

We really need to get this guy in La Crosse so we can finally get some really good weather forecasting.  Well, maybe not really good but it is really funny.  And having been around a few of those guys for a number of years, I have no doubt that he did actually go to Texas A & M 'cause all of those guys from Texas A & M are funny.

COUNTDOWN

WE'RE ONLY 25 DAYS AWAY FROM THE FIRST DAY OF AUTUMN

MAIL FROM CARL

I got this e-mail from Carl and I'm posting it because I've reached this point in life.  This line makes me feel better because now I know I'm not the only one.

It's scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee maker.

"COOLER"

The heat index will be a bit lower today if you can call 90 to 100 cooler.  There's a chance for thunderstorms tomorrow and Friday.  I know we need the rain but more rain will just bring more humidity.

Yesterday reminded me of a typical summer day when I lived in Houston (Texas).  The weather is like that, every day, for weeks on end and nobody even mentions it.  You just get used to it.

Like they say, "this, too, shall pass" and before we know it we'll be freezing our asses off.

HEAT WAVE

It's not over yet!
This is from the National Weather Service
HEAT INDICES WILL BE LOWER ON WEDNESDAY, BUT STILL TOP OUT AROUND 95 DURING THE AFTERNOON. ANOTHER BRIEF SURGE OF HEAT IS POSSIBLE ON FRIDAY, ESPECIALLY SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 90.

LINDA RONSTADT

Linda Ronstadt has written a new book, a memoir, I'm looking forward to.  She was always one of my favorite singers and, sorry to say, she's been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, in recent years, which has left her unable to sing anymore.

RIVERBOAT STOP

The American Queen makes its first stop, this summer, at Riverside Park tomorrow morning.  It's scheduled to arrive at 8 A.M. and depart at 5 tomorrow afternoon.

I think I'll take an early morning run down there and have a look.

HEAT

At 4 o'clock it was 95 in La Crosse and it felt like 102.  That's Summer in the city, baby!

This is a great video.

AVIATION HISTORY

It was on August 27, 1919 that 16 passengers boarded "The Lawson Airliner".  They took off from Milwaukee County Airport on a flight to New York City and Washington D.C.  That was the beginning of scheduled airline service in America.

No security screens, no baggage charges, no coffee, tea or milk, no sitting on the tarmac waiting for all the other aircraft taking off ahead of you.  You just got on the plane and went.

We'll never see that again....unless you can hitch a ride with Oprah.

HOT AND COLD

I have a terrible time during these hot spells.  It's not the heat that bothers me...it's the air conditioning.  I hope Paul will forgive me but I absolutely despise air conditioning.  Always have.  Always will.

I know I was born and raised in colder climes but I was never made for it.  The closer I get to the equator the better I feel.

Of course I get hot.  The sun shines through my windows all morning and, at five stories up there are no trees to filter it.  I have to turn the A/C on and keep the shades down.  But, I can only stand it for about 15 minutes before I'm shaking so hard I can't hold the coffee cup so I turn the A/C off.  So, it goes on all day.  On again, off again.  And don't tell me to turn the A/C down.  I have it down as low as it will go and I'm still freezing.

I think the reason I don't like to go to the movies, besides the fact that you don't get it unless you have the mind of a 13 year old and I don't like sitting in a cracker box, is that they keep those theaters so cold I feel like I'm hanging on a hook in a meat locker.

I think God made the breeze and the shade under the apple tree.  It was the devil that made air conditioning......and meat lockers.

And, one more thing.  It's 84 in my living room this morning and I'm just as comfortable as I can be.

FAMOUS BIRTHDAY

Daryl Dragon is celebrating his 71st birthday today.

Daryl's dad was conductor and composer Carmen Dragon.  Coming from a musical family, he followed the tradition on the keyboard with the Beach Boys in the 1970's.  Following that, he teamed up with his wife, Toni Tennille, and they set off on a musical career as Captain and Tennille.

MAIL FROM DONNIE

"In Portland we bought a new Apple laptop, mostly for me. No sales tax in Oregon, so I saved a lot. But, it may take me the rest of the year to get used to it."

Speaking of their trip, I like this piece of driftwood they found.  That's Linda and Friend in the background.

HEAT WAVE

It was still 82 at 3:00 A.M. and the forecast calls for a high of 95 this afternoon.  The National Weather Service says, DANGEROUS HEAT RETURNS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING WITH HEAT INDICES IN THE 100 TO 110 DEGREE RANGE.

THE HIGHEST HEAT INDICES WILL BE FOUND IN THE RIVER VALLEYS FROM THE LA CRESCENT AND LA CROSSE AREAS NORTHTHIS IS DUE TO THE DRIER SOILS ALLOWING FOR SLIGHTLY WARMER TEMPERATURES.

THE DANGEROUSLY HOT AND MUGGY CONDITIONS WILL LEAD TO HEAT RELATED STRESS AND ILLNESS IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, ESPECIALLY DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS.

THOSE MOST AT RISK INCLUDE THE YOUNG AND ELDERLY, THOSE WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING, AND PEOPLE PARTICIPATING IN STRENUOUS OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES.

By the way, Donnie said it was hotter in La Crosse, yesterday, than it was in Austin.  Maybe we should take a trip to Texas!

TEMPERATURE RECORD

We set a new record high for this date as the temperature topped out at 97 degrees .

BUGS

You think you've got problems?

HEAT

At 3:00 PM the heat index in La Crosse was 106.

FUNNY SWIM SUIT CLIP

Here's a good way to cool off in the hot weather.

HOT HOT HOT

The forecast calls for afternoon heat indices of 95 to 105 today.  I'll leave the great outdoors to mad dogs and Englishmen.

LANCE ARMSTRONG

I see a movie about Donnie and Linda's former neighbor is in the works.  The story of Lance Armstrong's doping scandal will be called "Red Blooded American."

WINTER FORECAST

I know it's hot right now but this might make you feel better about it.  The Old Farmers Almanac says our winter will be colder than normal with more snow than usual.  The old farmers have been around longer than the National Weather Service so I'm thinking they know just as much as those younger guys with their fancy education and government jobs.

BONEDIGGER IS THE LION..MILO IS THE DOG

QUIET PLEASE

Did you know that the QUIETEST PLACE ON EARTH IS IN MINNEAPOLIS?  And, did you know that if you stay in that room too long it will drive you crazy?  CLICK HERE TO READ ALL ABOUT IT.

LAUNDRY DAY

I stripped the bed, this morning, which meant I had a load of wash to do.  I threw everything in the machine and was about to push the start button when I noticed the controls didn't look quite right and the little door that you opened to put the detergent in was missing.

I pulled everything back out of the dryer and threw it all into the washer.  I've got to remember that next time.  First you wash.  Then you dry.

PANAMA CANAL REPORT

Having been there with Rita and Donnie, the Panama Canal is always of interest to me.  Here's an interesting story from CBS News.

HEART OF THE RIVER

Is this neat or not?  It's a tributary of the Missouri River in North Dakota.

DOG SMARTS

CELEBRATE NATIONAL DOG DAY!

Life is good with a dog on your lap!  National Dog Day is a good day to think about how lonely life would be without our dogs.

HEAT WAVE

It looks like today will be hotter than hell around the coulee region with heat indices ranging from 95 to 105 this afternoon and early evening.  The National Weather Service says we could see another heat wave during the Labor Day weekend.  STAY COOL!

NOW, HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS

A COOL FRONT WILL PUSH ACROSS THE AREA TUESDAY NIGHT BRINGING SOME RELIEF FROM THE HEAT ON WEDNESDAY.

FACTS

Alcohol always worked well for me so I never tried to over indulge in this other stuff.

HOT WEATHER

Sure, it's 94 degrees in La Crosse right now but, hey! We're just 121 DAYS AWAY FROM CHRISTMAS!  Before you know it we'll be dashing through the snow.

ANOTHER DOWNTOWN FIRE

First the fire at the Hollywood Theater a couple nights ago.  Last night the fire was in the basement at Fayze's Restaurant.  Firemen quickly extinguished the blaze and everyone got out as the building filled with smoke.

LA CROSSE WEATHER

It was 92 at 5:00 PM with a heat index of 99 and it will be more of the same tomorrow.  I didn't go out today.  I stayed in with the air conditioner on and most of my clothes off.

DONNIE AND LINDA'S VACATION

From what I gather, Donnie and Linda enjoyed their vacation in the "Great Northwest".  Donnie said, A view from our hotel room in Bellingham, near Canadian border. The ship is one of the ferries/cruises to Alaska, just arrived in portAnonymous
This is Linda with the friend they visited in Oregon.

Anonymous det said... Actually, it's the friend we visited in Washington. Aug 25, 2013, 2:51:00 PM

HOLLYWOOD THEATER FIRE

Here's a good report from WKBT on this weeks fire at the Hollywood Theater.

BIRTHDAYS

Monty Hall is still alive and kickin' at 92 today.  How many more deals can you make at that age?

REAL VS. FAKE

I like this:

AGING

While I was shaving, this morning, I noticed that my ear lobes are starting to sag.  I'm looking more and more like Lyndon Johnson.  I can now put the lobes on the list with my sagging eyelids, chest, stomach and the waddle under my chin.

I'm not slowly dying.  I'm slowly melting into the ground.

Isn't this cute?  The kid thinks he's old!

COMPUTER AND SOLITAIRE

You know what else I hated about life without a computer?

I had to play Solitaire with real cards.

SHEETS

A new study has found that single men don't wash their sheets more than every three months.

I can attest to the fact that there are some single men who wash their sheets a lot more than that!!  I'm one of them.  I love to jump into bed with clean sheets every week.

Washing the sheets is not a problem.  Making the bed is the problem!

BANANAS AND ROSES

Note to Rita:  Here's what you can do with your banana!

BANANAS

Banana Split Day!  Boy, that makes my mouth water but I'll be good and try to put it out of my mind.

Bananas are a great source for vitamin C and fiber but, unfortunately, they're also a great source of potassium, a deadly ingredient for failing kidneys.  Sadly, ice cream and chocolate are also X RATED for bad kidneys.

That means the only part of a banana split I can eat is the spoon and the bowl.

I think I'll pass.

By the way, did you know the banana is, actually, a member of the herb family.  It's related to orchids, lilies, and palms.

MAIL FROM LYNNE

" We checked more than once a day to see if you were back on the blog. Missed you and great having you writing again.

I was so busy with editing pictures and videos and having my own problems with that.

I have two laptops and prefer the one for making the films but today it is not cooperating. The movie was just about done and it said there were problems. This is a new one so I contacted Daniel. He may have to check the disk space."

AUTUMN EVENTS

Even though we're in for a hot week, fall is right around the corner and you sure could tell it this weekend.  The Viterbo campus was hopping again as students started moving into the dorms ahead of the first day of school.

I didn't even have to walk through the campus to know what time of year it is.  We had plenty of students moving into our apartment building too.  There are a lot of Viterbo and Technical College students who live here.  It's a perfect off-campus home for them since we're just a few blocks way.  Most of those students walk to school.

We have a lot of UW-La Crosse students too but they either drive or ride their bikes.  It's a little too far to walk to that campus.  Especially on a cold January morning.

Despite the heat this week, I shudder to think that those cold January mornings will be here before we know it!

BADGER FOOTBALL

I'd sure like to hitch a ride to Houston, with the Badgers, to visit my former home town again!

HEAT WAVE

The weatherman says we can expect a HIGH NEAR 94 TODAY WITH A HEAT INDEX OF 97.  Say a little prayer that your A/C doesn't conk out this week.  You're gonna need it!!
