A BEAUTIFUL PHOTO FROM THE MOST AWESOME PLACE ON EARTH

APPARENTLY TRAVELERS DON'T MIND PAYING THE HIGH PRICE OF FLYING

Every day airlines, around the world, squeeze 8.3 million passengers on their planes.  That's like the number of people who live in New York City.

Being in and out of Wisconsin all my life, I FINALLY made it to Madison for the very first time just a few months ago.

I still have not made it to Milwaukee except for a quick landing at the airport after some heavy icing on the wings of a flight, many years ago, between Chicago and La Crosse.  Maybe I should try to make it there before I "fold my wings" for the very last time.  This short video makes MKE look kind of fun!

SOUTH DAKOTA....THE WAY IT REALLY IS AND WHY I LOVE IT

If you've never been to SOUTH DAKOTA and don't know much about the state you'll find this article funny.  If you've been to South Dakota, or lived there, you'll find this article hilarious and more accurate than we might like to admit.

It's from the South Dakota Magazine and written by William J. Reynolds and YOU CAN READ IT RIGHT HERE

WE MAY HAVE TO IMPORT MORE LUTEFISK

In the first three months of this year, the number of U.S. citizens visiting Norway increased by 37%!  Believe it or not, it wasn't the Ole and Lena jokes that got us interested in the old country.  It was the Disney movie, "Frozen" that did the trick.

The movie is based on Norway and has become the highest-earning animated movie of all time!.

SUPER 8 HISTORY

Donnie sent an interesting article on the history of Super 8 Motels.  An interesting bit of trivia is that the first Super 8 motel was opened in Aberdeen, South Dakota in 1974..

I SALUTE THE STUDENT TRAVEL AGENCY!

The travel agency does just what the name implies.  They arrange educational trips for students and they have announced a great new policy.

They will NO LONGER PROVIDE TRIPS TO PLACES THAT ARE INVOLVED IN THE UNETHICAL MISTREATMENT OF ANIMALS.

The banned attractions, on the list, include SEA WORLD IN ORLANDO AND SAN DIEGO as well as destinations that include elephant rides and Tiger Temple in Thailand.

THEY GET A GOLD STAR FROM ME

TRAVELS WITH DONNIE

If you could enlarge this poor cell-phone snap, you'd see the Yankton skyline(!) atop the bluff above the Missouri River at the rear of this shot.

This was the view from my dining table at a fish shop across the river in Nebraska. Photo of Tom Brokaw on wall, thanking owner for a fine evening.

Almost stopped for the night at Freeman Country Inn, but it smelled funny. Instead, in Yankton I pay twice as much, but at least this motel is brand new.

Though it was bitter cold this morning, I reached Marion area by mid-afternoon and played the 9-hole course between Marion and Parker--the Par-Mar Club. I did not go into Marion.

DONNIE IS, SAFELY, IN SOUTH DAKOTA THIS MORNING

"Reached Chamberlain by 1:30 (Thursday afternoon).  Cold all the way.  Mid 40's and a painful north wind.  I got out of the car only briefly.

By mid-Dakota the sky had cleared but the temp never reached 60.

I visited the South Dakota Hall of Fame and an excellent Indian Museum at St. Joseph Indian School.

The Lewis and Clark "Interpretive Center" doesn't open, for the season until Saturday.

Early evening, I was the only diner in the only café on Main Street but I got a delicious Steak.

Both Mitchell and Chamberlain look far more "developed" and busy than I remember them ever being.  Several new and nice lodges on the river in Chamberlain.

I came over here to find an "exotic" golf course above Pierre, but it will be too cold to play.  All I can do tomorrow is drive up there, take a look, then turn around and head south for home."

LEAVE THE CAR AT HOME TODAY!

DONNIE DID A BIT OF SIGHTSEEING LAST NIGHT

"After talking to you, I drove about the coulees and discovered the House on the Rock Resort.  A first class lodge and golf course.  Later I found a Spring Green municipal course, almost no one on it, and really cheap, so I played 7 holes this evening.

Given your weather report, I will aim to visit Wilda at noon and then flee early to La Crosse ahead of storms."

AND SPEAKING OF VIROQUA...
Did you know that there was a time when Viroqua had street cars?

SPRING GREEN CALLING

Donnie called from Spring Green late this afternoon.  He decided he had driven long enough today to he packed it in until morning.

He's hoping to visit with Aunt Wilda tomorrow afternoon before coming into La Crosse.

BIG CROWD AT TOLEDO CONCERT

Donnie said he had to drive back to his motel in a thunderstorm after the concert in Toledo last night.  But, when he got there he was greeted with this.
I'm hoping that brings him good luck for his drive to La Crosse.
