THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF TELEVISION

I brought home a set of 4 DVD's, from the library.  They're all the old Dick Cavett shows from the '70's and I spent the whole afternoon watching them.  Interviews with Katherine Hepburn, Groucho Marx, Debbie Reynolds, Bette Davis, etc.

What great shows!  And, it was great to see those old talk shows where guests were booked to appear, not because they were selling a book, movie, TV show or record but because they were actually interesting.

TV used to actually be well done.  Now, instead of doing one show really well they throw another 100 channels of junk on your "entertainment bundle" and tell you want a great deal you're getting.

TOO HOT TO FIGHT A FIRE

The heat index was 88 when I went to Co-op to get some 7up.  I saw the smoke billowing so took a walk down to find the fire department on the scene of a fire about a half a block west of the Hollywood.  There was a lot of smoke in the air for a while.  I'm sorry to say I got some great pictures of the fire, came home and promptly deleted them all except the worst one.  I'm totally convinced that if I live to be 150 I will still never be able to make this computer work.

ANOTHER HOT WEEKEND

Highs today and tomorrow will be near 91.  Hang on!  One more hot month to go.

DON PETERS OUT

Don was about 85 miles west of Corpus Christi this morning with winds no higher than 30 MPH.  It will continue to fizzle out the rest of the day and there will be no more advisories.  Donnie and Linda will have to water again today.

PAUL ANKA TURNS 70 TODAY

He's still on tour across the USA and in November will tour Europe with shows in Belgium, Austria, Finland, France and Israel.

THE MAYFLYS RETURN!

Mayfly hatches have been showing up on NWS La Crosse's radar over the past few weeks, with one of the strongest returns showing up on Friday evening. Below is an image from 9:17pm with the high reflectivity being a Mayfly hatch along the Mississippi River. (Click on image for larger image)

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

In the line at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't  good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today.  Your generation did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.  Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over.  So they really were recycled.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.
Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind.  We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar  power really did dry the clothes.

Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power.

We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But we didn't have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances.  And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smartass young person.

FROM RITA:

"That drink on your blog...we can make that!  I have mint leaves.  Let's try it!"

(This sounds like a party to me)

BLUEBERRIES

Aunt Wilda said she had some more blueberries in the freezer for me.  She got them from Sandy on her last visit.

I was reminded of that when I came across this drink recipe while checking Texas tweets on Twitter.

I'm thinking this may be refreshing on a hot summer day.

In Texas they call it a Neches River Cooler and they suggest Dripping Springs Vodka but you may have to pay a visit to Donnie and Linda to get some of that.

Up here in the north country, I'm sure, any vodka will do.

You'll need an ounce of vodka, 8 blueberries, 3 mint leaves and 3 ounces of lemonade.  The recipe says to "muddle" the ingredients with ice but I'll give you my permission to throw it in the blender.

I think it sounds refreshing but I'd have to taste it to give you my final approval.

THOSE GOOD OLD DAYS

I mentioned I was reading a new Teddy Roosevelt biography by Roger L. Di Silvestro.  I got a kick out of what things cost back in 1878.  The most expensive item on the menu at the Jim Fisk tavern, in New York, was a porterhouse steak dinner for 75 cents.  Another eating establishment offered roast turkey with cranberry sauce for 18 cents.

By 1878, the Roosevelt family was worth a million or more.  Just imagine what they could buy with a million dollars in those days.

I'M MOVING FURNITURE IN THE LIVING ROOM. THUNDER HAS GONE BALLISTIC.

OPRAH WHO?

There's an old saying in the radio biz (or there used to be) that says, "Your only as good as your last show".  I saw the truth in that, many times, during my 30 years in the business.  I guess the saying still holds true today.

The readership on Oprah.com has dropped 50% since she went off the air.

JUNK MAIL

In today's junk mail there was a flyer for Acne cream.  Boy, if that isn't a waste of advertising dollars I don't know what is.  Where were they 60 years ago when I could have used it?

FROM DONNIE:

Our "chance of rain" tomorrow is already dropping like a stone in water as the storm turns south, down to 30% in Austin, and according to my own well-proven rule in CenTex, anything 30% or less is effectively 0%.

DON is a disappointment...once again!

THE BLACK FAWN (NOT SWAN...FAWN!)

MORE RARE THAN AN ALBINO
Rita and Roger sent this photo (TAKEN NEAR AUSTIN, TX) of a black fawn.

Yes, folks!  This is the real deal, although, your chance of seeing one is almost zero.  Many researchers have never seen one.

Believe me, I'm not a trusting fellow.  I don't believe anything until I check the facts and the facts are reported on this website CLICK HERE FOR BLACK FAWN INFO where you'll find some very interesting information.

DON AIN'T GONNA DO IT

Alas, according to the latest weather maps, Donnie and Linda aren't going to get a drop out of Don.

SALES ARE UP 6% AT STARBUCKS

That should make Donnie happy.

MY FAVORITE LINE ON TWITTER THIS MORNING

"There are 5 levels of drunk.  6 if you live in Wisconsin."

DENSE FOG THIS MORNING

BIENVENIDO MEXICANOS!

I read in the paper, this morning, that Latinos are the fastest growing segment of the population in Wisconsin.  Their numbers, according to the last census, have quadrupled in the Coulee Region and 85% of the people who have moved into Trempealeau County are Latino.

Like Donnie commented, I didn't leave the Latino culture, which I love so much, when I moved up from Texas, they came with me and I love it!

The other thing I love..in fact my favorite food of all....is Mexican food.  Alas, with my kidney diet, there isn't much Mexican food I can eat anymore but I can still eat the hot peppers!

POPULATION GROWTH IN ANOTHER AREA DOESN'T MAKE ME SO HAPPY
Animal control officers have picked up 4 timber rattlesnakes this year.  That's double what they usually see.

BEER DINNER, ANYONE?

I don't know anyone from Wisconsin who doesn't like beer so, if you're in Chicago you might like  to try the BEER DINNER WITH GOOSE ISLAND BREWERY at Sofitel Chicago, 20 E. Chestnut.

I STARTED A NEW BOOK TODAY:

THEODORE ROOSEVELT IN THE BADLANDS
By Roger L. DiSilvesro
Of course Roosevelt had his ranch in the NORTH Dakota badlands after, his wife, Alice died (of kidney disease, by the way).  When Alice died Teddy thought his life was over but life on the Dakota prairie turned him around and later he commented that, of all the places he's seen there was nothing like Dakota.  Now, THERE'S a smart man.  If you'd like to learn more about the book CLICK HERE

NO RAIN HERE

There was a big area of rain that moved through Iowa this morning and I thought we might get some of it but it stayed south of La Crosse.  It did look, however, like Viroqua might have gotten some.  I hope so.  Aunt Wilda said they needed rain.

The last time I looked it was headed right for Madison and Janesville so Lynne might not have to do any watering this afternoon.

FROM DONNIE:

"Big grass and woods fire uncomfortably close.  We can see smoke high in the sky from our back yard.  200 acres so far.  Even fire-fighting airplanes going over.  No homes burned yet and the wind is blowing it away from us."

A QUOTE FROM MARK TWAIN:

Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of congress. But I repeat myself.

FROM DONNIE:

I got another Christopher Walken look-alike compliment yesterday, from a teen-aged grocery clerk; a bit surprised she even knew Walken, who is old himself.

DO WE DESERVE BETTER?

On the Today Show, this morning, Matt asked Senator Durban, "Don't the American people deserve better than this?"

Let ME answer that.  Like the old saying goes, the nasty thing about a democracy is that the people get exactly what they deserve.  And, I have no doubt that the next time an election rolls around, you will go to the polls and re-elect the very same scum bags to go back to congress and screw you, again, for another term.

As long as folks are allowed to make politics a LIFETIME profession, remember, this is how they make their living.  And, just like anyone else, they're working FIRST AND FOREMOST for THEMSELVES.  Any politician who tells you they're going to Washington to work for
YOU is a liar.  And, I don't care which party he belongs to.  The parties are set up to USE you and WORK for the politicians.  I wonder if the American people will ever grow up.

EVEN BUGS BUNNY IS YOUNGER THAN I AM

It was on July 27, 1940 that the world got its first look at Bugs Bunny when he appeared in his first Warner Brothers cartoon, "A Wild Hare".

TREMPEALEAU COUNTY MUSEUM

An article in the La Crosse Tribune lead me to a very interesting new website.  Trempealeau County Museum is just FULL of great history.  If you're interested in that sort of thing you'll enjoy this site.

NASTY WEATHER

Thunderstorms, with heavy rain, rolled through town around 4:20 this morning.  It didn't last very long but I'm sure it was enough to wake up a lot of folks.  The heaviest storms were between Minneapolis and Eau Claire.

Storms are expected to form, again, this afternoon and the National Weather Service says we could see some severe weather later today.

NEW TALK SHOW

Just saw a promo for the new Anderson Cooper daytime talk show that premieres September 12th.  I'll be checkin' that out.

BLUEGRASS IN THE ROCKIES

Coming home from Paul and Dorothy's, a couple of weeks ago, Rita, Roger and I enjoyed a great bluegrass album that they had in the car.  They didn't know I love bluegrass the I didn't know they did but we sure did enjoy it together.

I can just imagine the three of us at the 15th ANNUAL BLUEGRASS AND BEER FESTIVAL in Keystone, Colorado August 6th and 7th.  I've been in Keystone several times and it's a fun place to be even when there isn't a big celebration.

I sure would love to attend that party!

OOPS! WATCH THE TYPO'S!

Thanks to whoever caught the error regarding Mick Jaggers age.  In the early morning hours, I typed 63 instead of 68.

ROADSHOW

I'm a big fan of PBS ROADSHOW and I sure hope I don't miss the history making show they taped in Tulsa Saturday.  Some very lucky person brought in a collection of five Chinese cups carved from Rhinoceros horns.  The cups, valued at $1.5 MILLION are the most valuable items ever featured on the show which has been on the air for 16 years.

NEW CAMERA

Donnie is trying out his new Nikkon camera.  If these two pictures are any indication, he made a good buy.

HEAT DEATHS

HERE'S WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE BBC TODAY

By the time we reach 80 our brain has lost 15% of its original weight.  All the time I thought I was losing my memory and now I know why.  My brain is getting smaller.  This is not good as it was never that big to begin with.

WE'RE ALL GETTING OLDER

Mick Jagger is still going strong at 68 today.  I could tell you about the afternoon I spent with his ex-wife, Bianca, but I've probably told that story too many times already.

And remember Marjorie Lord?  She played the wife of  Danny Thomas on "Make Room for Daddy".  She's hangin' in there at 93 today.

Marjorie started her film career while she was still in high school and played in a number of  "B" pictures at RKO and Universal until she got her big break with Danny Thomas in 1957.

After that she worked in several made for TV movies including her last one,  "Side by Side" which also starred Milton Berle, Sid Caesar and Danny Thomas.

From there she toured in dinner theater before retiring.

BLUE STARS

Our La Crosse Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps tied for 10th place at the International Championships in San Antonio over the weekend.  That puts them into the World Championship contest which will be held in Indianapolis next month.

AUNT WILDA CALLED

She just got back from a two week stay with Bob and Lynne.  Dawn was home and they spent a few days at Lake Geneva with Sandy so it sounds like they had quite a time.

Bob and Lynne had also been up north so they're all on the go.

Aunt Wilda said she's feeling good these days.  That's always good to hear.

RITA AND ROGER ON VACATION

Aren't these the cutest kids you ever did see?

MACHU PICCHU

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of

DONNIE REPORTS

Perfect irony, our plants are dying from TOO MUCH WATER.  Took us a while to figure it out, but we both water the plants too much, conditioned as we are by the drought.  Found lots of standing water in bottom of planters.  So now we are trying to dry them out in time to save some.

WEATHER

I think our heatwave is over.  Temperatures, all week, will be in the lower and middle 80's.  That's more like it for late July.

NO PARKING

I see nearly all of the apartments have been rented in the new Grand River Station transit center.  All of the retail space, however, sits empty and I keep hearing that the biggest problem is the lack of parking.  I find that very difficult to believe when there's a FOUR STORY PARKING RAMP RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET.

They had no problem renting the apartments and the waiting list for downtown apartments continues to grow.  That would indicate, to me, that if so many people want to LIVE downtown they might like to SHOP downtown too.

I remember when my friends Paul and Davy opened Minerva's Restaurant MINERVAS in downtown Sioux Falls.  Everyone said they were crazy.  They predicted they'd be out of business in a year because there was "no parking downtown".  That was more than 30 years ago.  Not only is their downtown location still doing great business, they have expanded into several states with more restaurants.

If you have a good product, the folks will come.  If you have a lousy product and don't know the meaning of "service" you can always use the "no parking" excuse for your failure.
