MOST POPULAR HALLOWEEN COSTUME IN GREEN BAY THIS YEAR

Jack used to say, "If you've seen one mountain you've see them all"

He would have gotten along great with these friends of Donnie.

"Retired friends took a cruise as a second honeymoon. Departed Portland, OR, for the Pacific Isles.

About half-way through the tour, and half-way through the Hawaiian Islands, they looked at the ship's promotional video itinerary of upcoming South Sea stops, and both suddenly realized that when you've seen one tropical island you've seen them all.

They jumped ship in Hawaii and flew home."

HERE'S AN INTERESTING PAGE

It's called TEN TRIPS OF A LIFETIME.  These are places, the authors say, will change the way you see the world.  I've been to one and, I must say, it had a lasting impression on me.  TAKE A LOOK AT THEM HERE and see if you've been to any.  I know Donnie has been to more than one.

OK! YOU'RE SO SMART. FIGURE THIS ONE OUT!

HERE'S ONE I'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.

SINCE WE HAVE A RAIN DAY AROUND HERE I THOUGHT I'D SHARE THIS VIDEO WITH YOU.

To stay as dry as possible, on a rainy day, is it better to WALK in the rain or RUN in the rain?  Ah, Ha!  You never even thought about that, did you?  Well, there is an answer to that question.

8:10 AM THUNDER LIGHTENING AND LIGHT RAIN

It was a good idea to cancel the Chili Cookoff today.  The rain is good but it's a lousy morning to be outside.  I think it's a good idea to stay right where I am.

Donnie says, "I had a Stress Myrocardial perfusion imaging exam yesterday".

I have no idea what that is but it sounds terribly expensive.

A PREDICTION FROM WILLARD

"Green Bay is coming to Houston to play the Texans tomorrow..Of course the UNDEFEATED Texans will win!"

ERIC CLAPTON HAS MORE THAN HIS GUITAR TO KEEP HIM IN PLENTY OF MONEY.

One of the paintings, from his private collection, by abstract artist Gerhard Richter, just sold, at auction, for $32 MILLION DOLLARS.

That, by the way, is the HIGHEST PRICE EVER PAID FOR A LIVING ARTIST.

IT MIGHT NOT BE SUCH A BAD DAY, AFTER ALL.

The early morning weather statement from the National Weather Service says we can expect scattered thunderstorms through tonight and there might be heavy rain and lightening to watch out for. That's not quite so omonous as yesterdays forecast.

In any event, I'm ready for the worst.  I've got two good movies and two good books, on hand and, as soon as I got up this morning, I threw the "fixins" for CHICKEN SOUP in the crockpot.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL SKEPTICS DAY

Show me someone who is absolutely sure of something and I'll show you a fool!

"Skeptical scrutiny is the means, both in science and religion, by which deep thoughts can be winnowed from deep nonsense."

NO CHILI? NOT THIS YEAR!

Tomorrow was supposed to have been Chili Day in downtown La Crosse but, with a 100% chance for rain tonight and tomorrow, officials decided to cancel the big Chili Cook-off in the State Bank parking lot this year.  That's a shame because it always draws a huge crowd.

I was thinking, the other day.  There's absolutely nothing in Chili that I'm supposed to eat except the onions but I may throw caution to the wind and make up a small batch this fall.  I can't think of anything I'd rather have to eat right now.

I SHOWED THIS TO THUNDER

He has decided he wants to take lessons at Arthur Murray's.

THERE'S A NEW SHOW ON THE GREAT AMERICAN FAMILY CHANNEL THAT LOOKS LIKE GREAT FUN

You can watch it Thursdays at 8 (Central Time).  This is a reality show I'd really watch and here's a sneak peek.

DID YOU KNOW?????

Some hotels now offer a special check-in staff for your DOG and a DOGGY ROOM SERVICE MENU??

(And Thunder want's to know, "what do cats get"?)

THIS IS JUST GREAT! I GOT IT FROM MY GOOD RAPID CITY BUDDY, GARY.

Do you remember THE VENTURES? George Babbitt from Tacoma, Washington was the drummer for the Ventures when the group first started out. He left the group and went on to become a FOUR STAR GENERAL IN THE U.S. AIR FORCE.

A lifetime later he got back together with the Ventures on a reunion tour and this video shows the result. If you love the old time Rock and Roll and you're old enough to remember the Ventures, you'll love this.

MY FAVORITE TWEETS OF THE MORNING

Need a couch? There's a lovely flowered sofa on Broadway Ext. southbound. Been sitting on the side of the road three days.

I've got no idea why I get two emails a week from @socalgas. Nobody wants to think about their gas service that much.

COLD MORNING

IT WAS 29 DEGREES AT 4 A.M.

IS INSOMNIA CONTAGIOUS?

Yesterday, when we had breakfast, RITA said, "I didn't sleep well last night".

Guess what.  I can't sleep tonight but I can't blame Rita.  I never had trouble sleeping until now.  It's a common problem for people with kidney disease.

They say (I think unless I made it up) that the best thing to do, if you can't sleep, is to get up for a while and then go back to bed and try again.  It has now been "a while" so I'll go back to bed and see what happens.

American Naturalist and writer, Joseph Wood Krutch said, "Cats are rather delicate creatures and they are subject to a good many different ailments, but I have never heard of one who suffered from insomnia."

He is so right.  Thunder sleeps most of the day and prowls most of the night so he's delighted when I can't sleep.  He gets some extra, and unexpected, "playtime".

RITA KNEW WHAT THE FLOWERS WERE!

"They are mums (Chrysanthemums) - I have wanted some that color. Look like Asters but red instead of purple."
THERE ARE NOW 46 THOUSAND HOMELESS PEOPLE IN NEW YORK CITY.  THE HIGHEST NUMBER EVER.

HAVE A MERRY DAMN CHRISTMAS OR TAKE COVER

ANYBODY KNOW WHAT KIND OF FLOWERS THESE ARE?

I spotted them across from the library and thought they would make a good groundcover.

ARE YOU SMART OR STUPID

FYI: I'm stupid.

SURPISE!

The phone rang early this morning.  Rita had to come into town early so she invited me to have breakfast with her at Fayze's.
Roger had to stay home and take care of the new bird he got (I'm hoping to get a picture).  It likes sitting on Rita's shoulder.  Before we left he called Rita to bring home something from the bakery.  I'll have to stop in there, one of these days, and get some for myself.  It all looked delicious.

DOES THE SHAPE OF THE GLASS DETERMINE HOW FAST YOU DRINK YOUR BEER???

JUST A THOUGHT

I'm thinking, police finding a drunk guy, passed out, on the dome of the state capitol.   That could only happen in Wisconsin and you can't blame it on the cheese.

AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH??

A person doesn't know how much he has to be thankful for until he has to pay taxes on it.

THERE'S A GREAT ARTICLE IN USA TODAY ABOUT WHAT FLIGHT ATTENDANTS THINK OF YOU.

READ THE ARTICLE HERE

I came away, from the story, thinking that the same slobs I meet, on the ground, I can sit next to if I decide to fly.  That's reason #102 of why I don't want to fly anymore.

I KNOW DONNIE WILL GET A KICK OUT OF THIS AND YOU MIGHT FIND IT INTERESTING TOO.

CLICK HERE to see pictures and stories of the STRANGEST GRAVES IN THE WORLD.  And, believe me, some of these are beyond strange.

AN ARREST HAS BEEN MADE IN THE SHOOTING DEATHS OF A FATHER AND SON AT A DOWNTOWN LA CROSSE BUSINESS A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO.

A 39 year old Dakota, Minnesota man was arrested, yesterday afternoon, on suspicion that he killed Paul Petrus and his son, A.J., at May's Photo shop in downtown La Crosse.  A news conference will be held this morning and we should get some new information.

HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT...ANOTHER WINDY DAY AHEAD

Along with the wind, we'll get some sunshine and warmer temperatures with a high around 50 this afternoon after a high yesterday of 52.

There's a good chance we'll get some rain this weekend.  There's a 70% to 90% chance for SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT.

REZ LIFE IS A GREAT NEW BOOK BY DAVID TREUER

Treuer lives on the Leech Lake Reservation up in northern Minnesota when he's not at his other home in Los Angeles.  This is an excellent source of information about northern Minnesota history and the Indians who live in that area.  I'm learning a lot about the history of this part of the country that I wasn't aware of.

Treuer is an excellent author whose work has appeared the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times and Esquire.  He's also written four other books about American Indians.

THIS AND THAT

DEBBIE REYNOLDS has cancelled her appearances for the next three months after being rushed to the hospital yesterday.  She had a reaction to some pills she was taking.  She's back home now.  She's 80 years old.....ALICE COOPER was in SIOUX FALLS, yesterday, to open a new Rock & Roll Academy for the Boys and Girls Clubs.  The new facility will offer music lessons and has a recording studio and performance area......I watched about 10 minutes of the new show, "ANIMAL CLINIC" ON NBC last night.  10 minutes was enough.  Pretty weak.....RITA is stopping by with coupons this morning.  She's a good kid.

DID YOU KNOW?

WE BLINK 10 TO 15 TIMES A MINUTE

WHO'S GONNA BE THE FIRST ONE TO BUY A SIX PACK?

I THINK I'LL WATCH THE NEW "ANIMAL PRACTICE" ON NBC TONIGHT

If its got animals I like it!
7:00 PM CDT

A NOTE FROM RITA

"We called Bob yesterday and asked him out to dinner last night. Then I called Eric because I knew they were running up here for the day to see Jenny's apartment. So Bob, Roger, Eric, Bert, Jennifer and I had dinner at Features last night. A fun time."

NO SIGN OF COOL WEATHER FOR TEXAS TODAY

Austin and Houston will both see highs near 90.

ON THIS WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY, HERE'S SOMETHING TO REMEMBER.

Clinical depression is something you don't want to ignore.  There are, as many as, 400 million people in the world suffering from depression.  This results in 3,000 deaths by suicide every day.

If you know someone who might have clinical depression, try to get them help.  And, remember, clinical depression is not the same thing as regular depression.  Time can cure regular depression.  It can not cure clinical depression.  Believe me.  I know what I'm talking about.

REMEMBERING THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF AIR TRAVEL

The old TWA terminal at JFK was opened, last weekend, to give the public a peek at the glorious days of air travel before deregulation turned passengers into cattle and the planes into cattle cars.  ENJOY THE PICTURES OF THAT GREAT OLD TERMINAL HERE.  I'm glad I lived in the "good old days".

I never thought I'd live to see the day when politicians could make travel by bus look good....but here we are!
BRETT FAVRE CELEBRATES HIS 43rd BIRTHDAY TODAY
FROM THE WISCONSIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY:

YESTERDAY WAS A LOUSY DAY....CLOUDY, WINDY AND WET

Today's weather looks a whole lot better with partly sunny skies and a high near 50.  Tomorrow, even warmer, with a high around 60.  Those warm temperatures won't last much longer so we'd better get out and enjoy them while we can.

THE INTERSECTION AT 7TH AND CASS, RIGHT NEAR MY APARTMENT BUILDING, HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MESS.

The streets don't line up, properly, so you have cars going every which way and coming out of streets and alleys about every 100 feet, or so.  Traffic is always backed up during drive times.

The Department of Transportation, finally, wants to do something about it.  The work is scheduled to begin in 2015.  They have two plans in mind.  They could realign the traffic lights or they may turn it into a roundabout.  Whatever they do is bound to be an improvement.

IT'S BEGINNING TO SOUND A LOT LIKE WINTER

Duane has a friend who works at Ellsworth Air Force base.  He said they had some snow and sleet, out there, this afternoon.

Duane said, "Windy and damn cold!"

THEY SAY CRIME DOESN'T PAY......

In today's economy, with the money Chicago mobster AL CAPONE made from his various criminal capers he would be worth $1.3 BILLION.

DID YOU KNOW???

If you triple-click on your mouse you can highlight a whole paragraph.

When I got up the temperature was still around 50 degrees.  I thought, to myself, if it's 50 now how warm will it be this afternoon?  I should have known better.  This is October.  It won't be warmer.  IT WILL BE COLDER.  By 4 o'clock, this afternoon, we'll be down around 44 degrees.

Along with the cold front there's A GOOD CHANCE FOR RAIN TODAY.  We sure can use the rain.....as long as it doesn't turn to ice.

22 STATES NOW DO NOT RECOGNIZE COLUMBUS DAY

If I had my way, NO state would celebrate such a ridiculous holiday.

Columbus never set foot on the North American continent, although he did, at one point, make landfall on, what is now Venezuela.  By 1492 there were, already, 145 million people living in the Americas.  They had "discovered" America LONG before Columbus ever got on a boat.  Besides, there's solid evidence that several other Europeans had visited North America LONG before 1492.  About the only thing Columbus really did was to completely destroy the people living on every island he visited.

Even the folks back home were not all that impressed with his exploits.  He was stripped of all his honors and titles before he died.

South Dakota has the right idea.  In that state, today, it's NATIVE AMERICAN DAY.

Jenny is still looking for a job.

Isaac will be heading back to school to get his degree and then onto working at a hospital as a flabaotomist. (Vampire) Ha Ha.

The boys and I will be doing the moving as Eric has to work.

We packed up the apartment yesterday and only have the kitchen left. Taking a break today and will finish this week.

TRAVEL+LEISURE ON YAHOO! HAS A LIST OF THE BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANTS IN THE USA

A couple caught my eye; GT FISH AND OYSTER IN CHICAGO and UCHI + UCHIKO IN AUSTIN, TEXAS.

According to their website, GT Fish and Oyster has SUNFISH CEVICHE which I'd love to try and it sounds like their KEY LIME PIE is a big favorite with the customers.

Uchi + Uchiko has a video that says it all.

CAN DOGS AND CATS GET THE FLU?

YES!  Dogs and cats can get the flu and it's much more common than you might think.  CHECK IT OUT HERE

WHERE ARE THE HOT HOME MARKETS?

I thought the home prices, by state, for the month of August were interesting.  It looks like HOMES ARE HOT in North Dakota with prices up 7.6%, up 7.4% in Montana, 7.1% in South Dakota.

Homes are NOT SO HOT in Minnesota up 4.7%, Iowa up 1.1% and Wisconsin up 0.1%.

HOMES ARE DOWNRIGHT ICY in Illinois with prices FALLING 2.3%.

Apparently Horace Greeley was right when he said, "Go west, young man".

Did you know that he also said, "Common sense is very uncommon."  When I watch the "news of the day" I think his "common sense" statement is the more fitting one to remember.
