THE LAST OF THE LEAVES

MORE GOOD NEWS FROM LYNNE

Just got a call from Bob and he is on his way home. He said all vitals are good now, she ate a good breakfast, and she can have visitors.

IF YOU LOVE GREAT MUSIC, YOU'VE GOT TO SEE THIS VIDEO AND PLAN A VISIT TO A GREAT MUSEUM

DONNIE WRITES
The National Music Museum and Center for Study of the History of Musical Instruments, located on the campus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, is one of the great institutions of its kind in the world. Its renowned collections include more than 15,000 American, European, and non-Western instruments from virtually all cultures and historical periods.

THE LATEST FROM LYNNE

Bob is in Viroqua with his mom. He called earlier and she was doing better. No therapy yesterday.

She needs walking but being 95 with fragile bones, she should not be doing more than she is capable of. Her temperature is normal and blood pressure good. Pneumonia isn't completely gone but in control.

No idea how long she will be there.

DONNIE REPORTS RUNAWAY INFLATION ON CUPCAKES

The local remodelled coffee shop is now a fine small-town place in which to hang out. But of course, they have to pay the bills of the remodelling.

Today they are offering home-made cupcakes that resemble Hostess cupcakes; they are even calling them "Hostess," which I'd think would be a copywright infringement (unless maybe they are just real Hosetesses, taken out of the package). In any case, one "Hostess" cupcake here costs $4.50.

THE NEXT BOOK ON THE SHELF

As soon as I finish the book I'm currently reading, I'll start new book I got, in the mail, from Donnie.

INFINITE WEST, Travels in South Dakota, by Fraser Harrison, an Englishman who has written his impressions of his travels through South Dakota.  Much of it is about areas in the Black Hills but there's also a chapter devoted to Douglas County.  That's a place, on the map, that's of special interest to me because Armour is located in Douglas County where I spent the first six years of my life.

Here's a quick interview with the author that's interesting.

COLD

Wind chill 26.  I WILL be wearing the parka this morning.

I HADN'T HEARD FROM DONNIE ABOUT HIS EAR PROBLEM SO I ASKED HIM IF HE HAD SEEN THE DOCTOR

"I walked right past the walk-in clinic, but by then, yesterday p.m., it was feeling better, so I hoped it would cure itself. Unfortunately, this morning it is still itching.

Linda is sicker--got into some bad turkey yesterday, and that bird is clawing and pecking to get back out!"

I'm betting Linda won't "gobble" any more of that!

AN UPDATE ON AUNT WILDA

Lynne said Aunt Wilda was feeling better yesterday and she is recovering from pneumonia.

Bob took a phone call from the doctor who said she'll be in assisted living for another 7 to 10 days.  If you'd like to send a card, I have her address.

DUANE REPORTS ON THE WEATHER IN THE BLACK HILLS AND THE NEW KITTENS HE'S ADOPTED

Cold here, frozen snow on the decks and street. Will have to be careful driving.

Kittens have been fed several times. I gave them warm chicken breasts and veggies yesterday. They loved it. Lots of licking their chops when they were finished. I warmed the rest of it up for them today.

THAR SHE BLOWS!

Our weather may be a bit on the nasty side but it beats the weather that's building up along the east coast.  This could be a storm of historic proportions once our cold front slams into their hurricane.

MEDICAL REPORT FROM DONNIE

Will be looking for a medic today, to check on a persistent and maddening itch in my right ear, going on three days now. Worst when I'm up, goes away when I lie down, so at least I can sleep.

More odd afflictions. That's the side of my head that had the dental work last week, so I am imagining exotic head infections...or a spider building a nest.

I jumped in the shower, grabbed the wrong bottle and washed my face with shampoo.  I must say it has given it an extra shine and my wrinkles seem to be more managable.

IT'S A CHICKEN SOUP DAY

I took one look at the forecast and got some chicken out of the freezer.  We're going to keep warm with a hot bowl of chicken soup today.

AN ALL STAR NASTY DAY

A preview of WINTER is with us today.  We started out pretty good with early morning temperatures around 60 but those temps will continue to fall all day, getting to 40 by 5 PM and sliding into the 30 degree neighborhood overnight.  We'll get the sun back tomorrow but it won't warm us up much above 40.  I think it's PARKA TIME.

DONNIE IS STROLLING DOWN MEMORY LANE

Yesterday he sent a picture of him, at home, in Medellin, Colombia.  That was back in the days when we were "young and free".  Today he sent this ancient photo taken when I went there to visit him.  We're standing on the terrace of his home overlooking one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen.
If you'd like to see more of Medellin, take this quick tour.

THE LATEST FROM LYNNE ON AUNT WILDA

She is at Bethel Home for recovery. We are hoping that her stay will be a short one and she can go home again. Her home helper is hoping to have more time to give to her.

Bob is going up Friday morning to see her and make sure she is comfortable there.

DONNIE MAKES AN OBSERVATION

Now that Lance has been disgraced and stripped of titles, I remind you that one of the leading world competition bikers is Dutchman Niki Terpstra.

When asked what he thought of the Armstrong disgrace and turnabout, Niki shrugged and said it doesn't really relate to current biking, as Lance is of an older school.

How quickly the generations change.

I'M STUCK

I got some Smuckers Strawberry Jelly at the store, yesterday, and had some on toast this morning.  I got a little bit on my hand.  I've washed it three times and it's still sticky.  What am I doing wrong?  By any chance, has Smuckers merged with Krazy Glue?

WHAT'S THE BEST FAST FOOD BURGER PLACE?

You might be surprised to know that the Los Angeles Times surveyed more than a thousand people and the top spot went to a burger place I'll bet you never heard of.  It's FIVE GUYS BURGER AND FRIES.  There's a pretty good list of other stores you might not be familiar with.

By the way, if your first thought was McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's or any of the other well known "joints", you'll find them WAY DOWN ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST!!

THIS IS THE DAY THE SWALLOWS DEPART FROM SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

Did you ever hear the story of why the swallows started coming to the California mission every spring?  Here it is......

I MISSED A HOLIDAY

I just discovered that October 17 was FOUR PRUNES DAY.  I saw it on the HALLMARK CARDS web page.  I was intrigued by what the significance of four prunes could be.  I went searching the net but the only reference to this holiday I could find was the Hallmark page.  You don't suppose that there is no such holiday and Hallmark just made it up to sell cards......do you?

No matter.  Prunes are loaded with potassium which is good for everybody except people with kidney disease so I wouldn't have celebrated it anyway and I sure wouldn't have thought to send a card to somebody.  I can't think of anyone who, in the last 20 years, has even mentioned prunes.

NEWS FROM BERT

Jayden did not have to have surgery and pins in. She is in a cast that will be on for 4 weeks with x rays every week for the next four weeks then a new cast for another 4 weeks.

She is still in pain but was able to go back to school. It is not her wrist is it is her forearm. Two bones broken and one of those was shatttered. She is out of sports until the spring. She is definitely Her fathers daughter.

Also on Wednesday, Sasaha is going to be put down. She bit a jogger a week ago friday and being a badly beaten rescue dog she is reverting back to her enforced ways. She is a broken 3 year old and we are heartbroken to loose her but for safety sake with kids here we don't want anything to happen.

Life was bad for the last week but We are feeling better this week. Hope all is well with Wilda. Keep us posted.

JUSTIN BIEBER GOT THE MESSAGE

Remember the little four year old girl, with brain cancer, who wanted to meet Justin Bieber?  Thanks to the kids at Holmen High, and many others, Justin visited Hailey Roser before his Milwaukee concert.

DONNIE SAYS......

City officials from Austin and Amsterdam are exchanging visits to compare their respective bicycle accommodations and policies. Austin has much more to learn from Amsterdam, where 27% of all "trips" are taken on bikes.

AN OLDIE BUT A GOODIE

Got a new bar in town. Sign outside says Old Timers Bar - ALL drinks 10 cents. I had to check it out. The old bartender says "Come on in and let me pour one for you! What will it be?" I ordered something complicated, to test the 10-cent offer, a martini. In no time the bartender served it up.

"That'll be 10 cents, please."

I had to ask, "How can you afford to serve martinis as good as these for a dime a'piece?"

"I'm a retired tailor, from Phoenix," he says. "I always wanted to own a bar and last year I hit the Lottery jackpot for $125 million; decided to open this place, always had this dream to offer real bargains. Every drink costs a dime. Wine, liquor, beer--it's all the same."

But I noticed seven other people at the end of the bar who didn't have any drinks and hadn't ordered anything the whole time I'd been there. I asked the bartender, "What's with them?"

"They're retired people from Wisconsin. They're waiting for Happy Hour when drinks are half price."

"Bob talked to his mom today and nothing new but she is holding her own. No doctors around on Sunday unless needed.

We will know more tomorrow and will keep you posted. She is very, very tired and not hungry but she is a very light eater always."

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY

I got out and made a run to Walgreen's and Co-op to enjoy the beautiful weather which will come to a screeching end tomorrow.

REMEMBER JOYCE RANDOLPH?

She played Trixi Norton on THE HONEYMOONERS.  She's still alive and kickin' at 88 today and the only surviving member of one of the greatest comedies in television history.

"TWO TICKETS, PLEASE"

The other day I mentioned the price the scalpers were asking for tickets to see the Rolling Stones concert in Newark in December.  As for the real ticket price, if you buy from a legitimate vendor, it will cost you $4,400.00 for a ticket, on the floor, right in front of the stage.  That doesn't include the price of the ear plugs you might need to protect your ear drums.

Let's say you don't want to pay that much.  You're willing to sit in the very back of the auditorium, off to the side, in the upper tier of seats.  Those "cheap" seats are going for $818.00 and that does not include the binoculars you'll probably want to have.  Or, you can see me really, really ,really close for $20.00.

The economy may be bad but we aren't all broke!  Will they sell out?   I'll be surprised if they don't.
