"Last day of the Sturgis Bike Rally. Hundreds of drug busts, four fatalities, hundreds of DWI's, assaults, indecent exposures.
Now we get the Central States Fair crowds. 5,000 visitors a day expected."

SOUTH DAKOTA....THE WAY IT REALLY IS AND WHY I LOVE IT
If you've never been to SOUTH DAKOTA and don't know much about the state you'll find this article funny. If you've been to South Dakota, or lived there, you'll find this article hilarious and more accurate than we might like to admit.
It's from the South Dakota Magazine and written by William J. Reynolds and YOU CAN READ IT RIGHT HERE

SUPER 8 HISTORY
Donnie sent an interesting article on the history of Super 8 Motels. An interesting bit of trivia is that the first Super 8 motel was opened in Aberdeen, South Dakota in 1974..

CRAZY HORSE VOLKSMARCH
Some of you are seeing an ad for the CRAZY HORSE VOLKSMARCH, on this web page today, which is held the first full weekend in June. If you're a walker, like me, and will be in the Black Hills at that time you might want to join the folks for a 6.2 mile walk through the woods, to the shrine.

JOHN LOPEZ IS THE GREATEST!
I want to share a website with you (CLICK HERE) so that you can see his magnificent work.
John was born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota and he does the most beautiful sculptures I've ever seen. What makes them so very special is that they're all MADE OUT OF SCRAP METAL!!

TRAVELS WITH DONNIE
If you could enlarge this poor cell-phone snap, you'd see the Yankton skyline(!) atop the bluff above the Missouri River at the rear of this shot.
This was the view from my dining table at a fish shop across the river in Nebraska. Photo of Tom Brokaw on wall, thanking owner for a fine evening.
Almost stopped for the night at Freeman Country Inn, but it smelled funny. Instead, in Yankton I pay twice as much, but at least this motel is brand new.
Though it was bitter cold this morning, I reached Marion area by mid-afternoon and played the 9-hole course between Marion and Parker--the Par-Mar Club. I did not go into Marion.

DONNIE IS, SAFELY, IN SOUTH DAKOTA THIS MORNING
"Reached Chamberlain by 1:30 (Thursday afternoon). Cold all the way. Mid 40's and a painful north wind. I got out of the car only briefly.
By mid-Dakota the sky had cleared but the temp never reached 60.
I visited the South Dakota Hall of Fame and an excellent Indian Museum at St. Joseph Indian School.
The Lewis and Clark "Interpretive Center" doesn't open, for the season until Saturday.
Early evening, I was the only diner in the only café on Main Street but I got a delicious Steak.
Both Mitchell and Chamberlain look far more "developed" and busy than I remember them ever being. Several new and nice lodges on the river in Chamberlain.
I came over here to find an "exotic" golf course above Pierre, but it will be too cold to play. All I can do tomorrow is drive up there, take a look, then turn around and head south for home."

GETTING OLD? HEAD FOR SOUTH DAKOTA!
BANKRATE.COM says it may be cold in the winter but if you're planning to retire, there's no better place to be in the USA than SOUTH DAKOTA!
South Dakota has one of the highest health care rankings in the USA. It has a low cost of living and the sixth lowest crime rate in the country and you're going to LOVE the lower taxes.
After South Dakota comes Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming.
Notice two things. They're all in the middle of the country and they're all west of the Mississippi River.
I've said it many times and I'll say it again. Anyone living east of the Mississippi isn't really living. And, if you're going to live in the WEST you might as well live in the BEST state and we all know which state this is, don't we?
Thanks to Ron for sending me the article.

RAIN VS SNOW
I was going to complain about more rain coming for the end of the week.
Now I see the forecast calls for SNOW over the Black Hills, Northeast Wyoming and far western South Dakota for Wednesday night and early Thursday. Guess I won't complain about a little more rain..

JOE FOSS
If you've ever lived in South Dakota, you'll want to remember that JOE FOSS WAS BORN 99 YEARS AGO TODAY.
Foss was a real South Dakota hero. The Sioux Falls airport code is FSD which stands for "Foss Field".
As a World War II hero, Joe shot down 26 enemy planes during the battle for Guadalcanal. He went on to become the Governor of South Dakota and the first commissioner of the American Football League.
