SIDEWALKS NEED MOWING TOO

Love the guy in Jackson, Wisconsin who drove his lawn tractor off the grass, onto to sidewalk, the into the street before parking in Walgreen's parking lot.  Blood alcohol content: more than 2 1/2 times the legal limit for drunk mowing.

MAGGIE'S MAKES NEWS

FROM DONNIE
I heard an NPR radio report (the typical election man-on-the-street interviews) from MAGGIE'S CAFE IN ONALASKA.  We remember when MR. D's was where the national media hung out during every presidential campaignWith Mr. D gone, apparently Maggie's now offers that hometown charm the media loves.

SECOND HOMICIDE THIS MONTH

La Crosse isn't gaining in population but it's experiencing some of the bad things folks usually associate with big city life.

The second murder this month, in La Crosse, involved a 20 year old Western Tech student.

This latest tragedy hit close to home.  The murder was in my neighborhood and the victim was a graduate of West Salem High School.  It also reminded me of the murder that took place in my apartment complex while I was living in Houston.  Read the full story HERE in the La Crosse Tribune.

STAY AWAY FROM ME~~I DON'T LIKE ANYTHING

DONNIE REPORTS ON HIS LATEST DISCOVERY
Spent the morning at the bookstore reading news magazines.  I learned of a new "app" that would enable your cellphone or iphone to alert you when you are near a person who shares your interests.
For example, I program my phone with the fact that I like Fats Domino.  The phone will then buzz (or, perhaps play "Blueberry Hill") when I am within a certain distance of another person who has also programmed an appreciation for Fats Domino.  What this is supposed to accomplish is not yet clear to me.
I keep thinking there must be a limit on the usefulness of technology.  Of course, how much these things actually improve life remains to be seen.

Things are still booming in Clintonville.

3 nights of noisy booming, keeping folks awake and wondering what's causing it.

I just read this article in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL CLICK HERE and, apparently, this booming stuff is more common than you think.  It's happened around the world and goes back into Indian legend.

But, what are they?  Nobody knows.  It takes something like this to remind us humans that we aren't nearly as smart as we think we are.  There's a lot more stuff that we don't know than stuff that we do know!

Didn't someone in the family live in Clintonville at one time?  The name sounds familiar.

Hey! Look at this! The BUBBLERS won't be bubbling anymore.

The city has found a fixture that will fit the historic street corner bubblers in La Crosse.  If you want a sip of water, on a hot summer day, you'll have to "push the button" to make the water run.  It won't be as unique as the old "bubbling" fixtures but it will save the city, literally, millions of gallons of water every summer.  Read the full story, here, in the La Crosse Tribune.

If the article I was just reading is right, newspapers will be history before you know it.

Newspaper advertising is half what it was in 2005 and a study by USC Annenberg School concludes that most U.S. daily newspapers will be gone in five years.

ANOTHER BBC FEATURE REPORT

If you haven't watched any BBC newscasts, in the past, you really should check them out.  The BBC is so far superior to any U.S. news organization it's pathetic.

CLICK HERE FOR AN EXCELLENT REPORT FROM DUBUQUE See what one of our neighboring cities is doing to revitalize the town and improve the economy.

WELL! THIS IS REFRESHING TO HEAR

BILL GATES says that everyone needs to contribute their fair share in getting this country back on track and, as a rich man...a VERY rich man...HE DOSN'T BELIEVE HE'S PAYING ENOUGH IN TAXES.  CLICK HERE to hear his comments from an interview he did with BBC-TV.

ANOTHER AWARD FOR GUNDERSON

With RITA gone, it will be interesting to see if the clinic can continue to maintain their high standards.

Gunderson Lutheran has a new award to be proud of. They have received a CLINICAL EXCELLENCE AWARD from an independent health care ratings service which puts GUNDERSON IN THE TOP 5% OF THE HOSPITALS IN THE COUNTRY.

THE GAP BETWEEN THE RICH AND THE REST

If you have the time, I recommend you listen to this program (25 minutes) from the BBC about the most serious problem of the gap between the super rich and the rest of us.  It's a revealing look at how GREED (one of the seven deadly sins) is destroying our way of life around the globe.  CLICK HERE TO LISTEN

DONNIE: DO YOU KNOW WHERE THIS IS?

4.6 earthquake off-shore from Bio Bio, Chile this afternoon.  Love the name of the town.

OH, SURE! NOW THEY COME ALONG WITH IT

This is what I needed 40 years ago.  Now, with most of the hair gone, they come along with BOTOX FOR HAIR!  Read all about it in The Hollywood Reporter
