THIS IS WHY I'VE HAD TO TAKE ANTI-DEPRESSENTS MOST OF MY LIFE. I'M SO DAMN SMART!

I BELIEVE THIS IS, PROBABLY, TRUE

IT WILL BE A SHORTER OKTOBERFEST NEXT YEAR

The 9 day Oktoberfest will end this year.  Beginning next year Oktoberfest will be a four day event.

THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE THAT OKTOBERFEST WILL TURN SOGGY BEFORE THE DAY IS OUT

There's a 90% chance for rain today and we could even see a thunderstorm later on this afternoon.

This morning there's a line of showers and thunderstorms stretching from Lubbock, Texas all the way up to Winnipeg, Canada.  Rain is falling over most of eastern North and South Dakota.

It's, also, going to be a windy day.  We could get up to 30 mph wind gusts.

ISN'T IT INTERESTING THAT DRINK BEER DAY FALLS ON THE BIGGEST DAY OF OKTOBERFEST THIS YEAR!

WOULD YOU BELIEVE THE SHAPE OF THE CHOCOLATE, YOU'RE EATING, CAN CHANGE THE TASTE OF THE CHOCOLATE?

Well, ACCORDING TO THIS INTERESTING ARTICLE it can, indeed, change the taste!

DONNIE CAPTURED THIS BEAUTIFUL SUNRISE OVER DRIPPING SPRINGS

PANAMA HAS PLAYED A BIG PART IN THE LIVES OF OUR FAMILY

Donnie spent several years in Panama, Rita and I will never forget our trip to Panama so many years ago and now Eric and Bert are getting ready for a Panama Canal transit.  They should be able to get glimpses of the work being done on the new canal systemDiviértete en Panamá! being built.  And, to Eric and Bert: Diviertete en Panama!

Donnie sent this interesting video on the progress of that construction.

SADDENED TO HEAR OF THE DEATH OF THE CAPTAIN OF UNITED FLIGHT 1603 FROM HOUSTON TO SEATTLE OVERNIGHT.

The First Officer of that flight showed how well trained and prepared cabin crews are on our commercial airlines. He should be commended for bringing the aircraft down, safely, in Boise, and getting help for the Captain as quickly as possible.

OKTOBERFEST ISN'T THE ONLY THING HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND

RITA AND ROGER ARE OFF TO MILWAUKEE TOMORROW

They will be attending a memorial service and then stay over night.  Too much driving to make the round trip in one day.

HOW ABOUT A PERFECT COCKTAIL FOR AUTUMN!

CINNAMON TOAST
COCKTAIL
1 1/4 ounce of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
 6 ounces apple cider
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon

Heat the cider and rum.  Pour into a glass or mug rimmed with sugar and cinnamon.

That should warm you up!
WE ARE

IT WAS A VERY MILD NIGHT, AROUND HERE, AND WE DON'T HAVE MANY OF THOSE LEFT!!

THERE'S ANOTHER IMPORTANT BIRTHDAY TO REMEMBER. JAYNE MEADOWS TURNS 93 today!

THAT GOES FOR ME TOO

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN 65 TODAY!

BOB AND LYNNE MADE A TRIP TO VIROQUA YESTERDAY

LYNNE WROTE:
"We had a good visit with mom and she is doing fine.  Very alert, as always, and feeling well.

We took her for a 30 minute ride.  Just getting out for awhile is nice for her.

I took a dozen of my chocolate chip/oatmeal cookies which she always enjoys.  Also took her some bags of chips, little candy bars and wafers which she loves.  Remember when she wouldn't eat any of those things?  She loves them all now.

We had a nice trip back home but, as always, the Madison beltline was very busy.  Lot's of construction going on."

LOVE THIS NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PHOTO FROM CARTEGENA, COLUMBIA WHERE DONNIE AND I SPENT A COUPLE OF FUN DAYS MANY YEARS AGO.

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR SOME GREAT WEATHER, COME TO LA CROSSE!

A sunny day with a high near 75 is pretty hard to beat.  It will be a little breezy but we can live with that.

WE'RE CELEBRATING JOHNNY APPLESEED'S BIRTHDAY TODAY. BORN SEPTEMBER 26, 1774

Johnny was one of a kind who didn't believe in marriage and spent most of his life walking through the countryside planting apple orchards.  The apple trees he planted didn't produce apples you could eat but they made really good hard apple cider.  Hard, as in moonshine!  That may have had something to do with wearing that tin pan on his head!

Love this!

Post office wants to raise the price of a stamp to 49 cents in late January.  Do people still use stamps?

NO MATTER HOW HARD THEY TRIED, SCIENTISTS COULDN'T FIND AN EFFECTIVE WEAPON AGAINST TERMITES

It just seemed that, over the eons, nothing could kill the little buggers...until now.

Finally we know what's been protecting the termites all this time.  IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT IS CLICK HERE

LOOKS LIKE SANTA HAS OPENED HIS WORKSHOP FOR THE SEASON!

RICK AND ANGELA AREN'T ALL THAT FAR FROM JACKSON HOLE

I STARTED READING "READY FOR A BRAND NEW BEAT" BY MARK KURLANSKY THIS AFTERNOON

It's a look at the music business in the 1960's, the best decade of my life when I was in the radio business of music.  I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in those exciting '60's.

The title of the book is a line, of course, from the 1964 hit by Martha and the Vandellas, "Dancin' in the Street".

J.C. PENNY STOCK FELL LIKE A ROCK ON WALL STREET TODAY

It doesn't look good for the company that's been around for more than a century.  That makes me feel bad.  I always liked Penny's.

MID-AFTERNOON WITH SUNSHINE AND TEMPERATURES IN THE LOW 70'S

You won't hear any complaints from me.  Tomorrow should be even better with highs near 80.  I'm lovin' it!

HOW SMALL IS TOO SMALL?

TAKE ME BACK TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS

Franklin Elementary School on the Northside of La Crosse is building a new school. The current school was built in 1955.  The current school, when it was built, 58 years ago, cost $380,000.  The new school, being built today, will cost $15 MILLION.

The old dollar ain't what she used to be!

VISIT THE TRIBAL LANDS OF WISCONSIN. THERE'S A LOT MORE TO SEE THAN YOU THOUGHT.

IN LA CROSSE, ANY TIME IS A GOOD TIME FOR A BRAT (I guess).

Hey, a brat with a kraut omlette and a Bloody Mary for breakfast?  Sounds good to me.  Or let's say, it would have sounded good to me 50 years ago.  At 23 I could have handled it.  Now?  I'll leave it to the younger folks.

BRACE YOURSELF....HERE IT COMES!

Did you hear about Fred?

An old man lay sprawled across three entire seats in the movie theater.

When the usher came by and noticed this, he whispered to the old man, "Sorry sir, but you're only allowed one seat."

The old man didn't budge.

The usher became more impatient. "Sir, if you don't get up from there I'm going to have to call the manager."

Once again, the old man just muttered and did nothing.

The usher marched briskly back up the aisle, and in a moment he
returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the old disheveled man, but with no success. Finally they summoned the police.

The officer surveyed the situation briefly then asked, "All right
buddy what's your name?"

"Fred," the old man moaned.

"Where ya from, Fred?" asked the police officer.

With a terrible grunt in his voice, and without moving, Fred replied

"The balcony."

Gary sent this as a friendly reminder.

Winter is coming soon.
TOO SOON!
I really hope no one was hurt but this is one of the funniest videos I've ever seen.

Even if you aren't Norwegian (God forbid), you'll enjoy this video of the beautiful Stave Churches of Norway.

The sad fact is that only 28 of these masterpieces still exist in Norway.

I should mention, however, that there is a beautiful Stave Church, in Rapid City.  You'll want to see it if you visit the Black Hills of South Dakota.  To learn more about the Rapid City church CLICK HERE TO VISIT THEIR WEBSITE

Attention all composters (and you know who you are):

DID YOU KNOW THIS?

I tip my hat to Thomas Marrone of Murrysville, Pennsylvania!

Tom was arrested for driving drunk on his riding lawn mower.....6.4 miles away from his lawn....at 1:30 in the morning.  You might remember that country singer George Jones pulled that same trick many years ago.

I was never caught doing that, mostly because a never had a riding lawn mower or a lawn.  I was, however, seen riding a child's tricycle through the dining room of a popular Rapid City supper club, on my 22nd birthday, wearing, what some might call, an obscene costume.  Ron and Penny might recall that night as they were there.

I hasten to add that I was not arrested or asked to leave the club.  In those days I was quite well known for my "strange behavior" in more than one of the towns most popular watering holes.

Gerry Marsden is 71 years old today.

Don't know Gerry Marsden?  If you're as old as I am and spent a big part of your life playing top 40 songs on the radio you do.  You remember Gerry and the Pacemakers.

I just can't believe the weather this week. Wouldn't it be nice if it stayed like this all winter and then warmed up in May?

With a sunny sky, we'll have a high around 70 today and tomorrow, 75 by Thursday and 80 on Friday.  I'm lovin' it!!

I was so glad to hear that Bob Blair is having such an easy recovery from his knee surgery.

Lynne said, "Bob is doing great after his knee surgery.  The doc and nurses can't believe he has had no pain and didn't have to take one pain pill.  He is already walking better.

The other knee will be operated on in December.  Good to get it done."

Fall in South Dakota

I KNOW I would like this guy.

Who you talkin' to, lady?

A young ventriloquist is doing the New Jersey night club scene. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb, blonde jokes.

Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and starts shouting, "I've heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype women that way? What does the color of a person's hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It's men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people. You and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general ...pathetically all in the name of humor!"

The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the beautiful blonde yells:

"You stay out of this! I'm talking to that little shit on your lap!"

Don't rain on my parade!

With a sunny sky and a high of 70 this should be a great day to get out and enjoy what we have left of the warm weather.  The first day of Oktoberfest, on Friday, will be even better with sunshine and a high near 80! Saturday, however, doesn't look so good.  There's a 50% chance for showers and thunderstorms which could be a bummer for the big Oktoberfest Maple Leaf Parade.

Bruce Springsteen has a birthday today. He's 64 years old.

I slept 6 hours last night. How long did you sleep?

Good one from Rita and Roger

The latest from Lynne:

I am catching up on photo books and camcorder films which is a great feeling.  When I finish ours, then I work on our kid's photo books, and have years of Sandy's home movies to edit.

Yesterday was so much fun as we went to Sandy's to celebrate her birthday.  Carl's cousins from IL, who we all know, came so there had to be at least 25 - 30 adults/kids.  Everyone brought food and we had a cookout.

Chris,  Sandy's son, is an expert boat driver as he learned from his dad over the years, so took many for rides once the weather cleared up.  It was cloudy and cold most of the day, but that didn't stop anyone from having fun.

Our hummingbirds are still here.  Last Fall we had them into the first week of Oct.  I think we have had more than ever this year.

This took place of the coast of Kona, Hawaii where I spent a wonderful week many years ago.

The two divers were on a dive when this dolphin swam up to them.  It had a fishing line hooked around it which was making it difficult for him to swim.

The dolphin was hoping the divers could give him help and they did.

Carl found this beautiful video.

Know anybody like this?

Power outage

We had a power outage last week and my PC, TV and games console shut down immediately, it was raining so I couldn’t golf
so I had to talk to my wife for a few hours.
She seems like a nice person.

Looks good to me!

Debby Boone is 57 today.

I'VE GOT

DOES THAT SMELL
LIKE FALL?

SO LONG SUMMER....FALL HAS ARRIVED!

If you want to know where the color is Check out the Wisconsin fall color report here.

What a great first day of fall!

The National Weather Service is warning of some dense fog, this morning, in the river valleys and in western and central Wisconsin, otherwise it will be a beautiful sunny day with a high near 65.  Sounds good to me.

Good one from Rita.

It's over!! Summer is gone.
