BECOMMING WINTER WEARY

DID YOU KNOW THIS?

I DON'T KNOW WHICH IS WORSE
It has finally warmed up and now the filthy slush and dirty puddles have replaced the bitter cold and pristine ice.  Summer can't come fast enough.

HOW COULD YOU SAY NO TO A FACE LIKE THIS?

HAPPY HOT TODDY DAY
I never met a Toddy I didn't like!

TOO MANY BELLA'S?
I ran across an interesting story, this morning, that says the most popular pet name for 2013, according to the Veterinary  Pet Insurance Company, was BELLA for BOTH cats and dogs.  And, Bella showed up as the 5th most favorite name for human girls last year.

I wanted to pass this along in case you're planning on a new member of the family.  You might want to pick something other than Bella.  We seem to have enough Bella's already!

CUCKOO DANCING WEEK STARTS TODAY!
This week celebrates, of course, the Laurel and Hardy theme song.

It's fun to celebrate the dance and song and Laurel and Hardy but we, probably, should celebrate the bird too.

The Cuckoo is the bird that lays its eggs in the nests of other birds and lets those other birds raise their kids.  Cuckoo's spend their summers in Europe and Asia and their winters in Africa.  Nothing Cuckoo about that!

AND THERE ARE MORE CUCKOO FACTS
YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF
It turns out that Donnie is a bit of a "cuckoo authority".

"Worth pointing out that we have a Cuckoo here in the USA too.  In fact, in our back yard!  The Roadrunner is a member of the cuckoo family.  So, too, is the yellow-billed cuckoo.  It's a local bird but I've seen only one pair in the eight years here."

(I, sometimes, wonder if I, myself, might be a member of the cuckoo family.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
NAOMI JUDD
67 TODAY
Here she is with daughter, Wynona, at their farewell concert.
I sure do love listening to these ladies sing!

THE WEATHER LOOKS HALFWAY DECENT FOR THE WEEKEND
Some sun this afternoon should bump the temperature up to 30 and tomorrow we could see a high not far from 40.  That just sounds soooo good!

THIS AFTERNOON
WELCOME TO WISCONSIN
AUNT LIB DIED 23 YEARS AGO TODAY
PERHAPS THIS IS THE CAUSE OF MY CLINICAL DEPRESSION
The newest item in my wardrobe is circa 1963.  I think Sophie is on to something.

AND HERE'S ANOTHER TWEET THAT CAUGHT MY EYE
My answer to that is...YES...we have to live with wrinkles (I don't think I want to end up looking like Joan Rivers) and "grow old gracefully"?  Are you kidding????  I'm growing old kicking and screaming and I intend to keep that up until the day I die.

INTERESTING NOTE FROM DUANE THIS MORNING
He tells me the North Dakota oil workers have found Rapid City.  They're paying big bucks for apartments and traveling to the Black Hills to spend their days off.

That takes me back to my Rapid City days when the cold war was at its peak.  In those days the town was full of construction workers building the missile silos near the city.  They had big bucks to spend too.

TWO HAPPY BIRTHDAY'S
TO CELEBRATE TODAY
I can't think of Jim Croce, who is 71 today, without thinking of Le Roy Brown!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
ROD STEWART
HE'S 69 TODAY
Rod had a hit with what became my theme song.  "Da ya think I'm Sexy"?

HAD HE LIVED, SAL MINEO WOULD HAVE BEEN 75 TODAY
Instead, he lost his life in a senseless murder outside his home on February 12, 1976.

DID NEW YORK HAVE THE WORLDS FIRST SUBWAY?
No!  It was London.  The Metropolitan opened on this date in 1863.

ONE WORD SAYS IT ALL

As usual, I looked at the forecast as soon as I got up and I couldn't believe my eyes.  The temperature was 22 degrees.....ABOVE zero!  It's been a long time since it's been that warm in La Crosse.

We do have some nasty weather coming however.  Seems it has warmed up just enough to snow.

The weatherman says we could get some icing before it starts to snow with about a tenth of an inch falling around here.  Where the snow lasts longer, 2 to 5 inches is possible.  That's not the best forecast but I'm not going anywhere and the word "cold" is nowhere to be seen so you won't hear any complaints from me!

ICE BALLS INVADE LAKE MICHIGAN

LOOK AT THIS, KIDS!
(Ice balls is not a medical problem)

IT'S GETTING WARM ENOUGH TO SNOW!
It looks like we'll get a new snow cover tomorrow.  Mixed precipitation will move in tomorrow afternoon and evening.  By Saturday morning there could be 2 to 5 inches of clean snow on the ground. I don't know about you but WE are not pleased.

ONLY IN WISCONSIN

The afghan that Donnie sent that Mother made sure looks nice with the recliner Aunt Wilda gave me.

Of course I'm beautiful.
I'M NORWEGIAN!

MORE SEATS?
SMALLER ASS?
So, I'm reading, this morning, that DELTA AIRLINES is going to start squeezing more seats on some of their planes.  Let's seen now....the cabin is only so big.  You can't make the cabin bigger.  Won't that mean the seats will have to be smaller?

I'm thinking.  Why not just take all the seats out and have the passengers stand.  Really pack them in.

Have you ever been on a New York subway during rush hour?  I have.  You'd be surprised how many people you can get into a confined space if they're all standing and pressing together tighter and tighter.

You'd also be surprised at how "friendly" folks can get when you press them that close together.

IS THE WINDOW CLOSING ON
AARON ROGERS?
Good article on YAHOO! this morning.  READ IT HERE (or go to Yahoo! Sports)

And, while we're on the subject of football....BART STARR turns 80 today!!

It was 16 years ago today that Thunder came to live with me.  It ended much too soon.

0h!  THIS IS GOOD!

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE!

WARMER AIR IS A'COMIN' THERE'S DANCING TONIGHT!
I don't know if I'll be able to handle all this heat.  We're looking at highs of 17 today and 35 tomorrow.

35 tomorrow?  That's above freezing, kids!

Yesterday, I was about ready to throw in the towel.  I said,  "That's it, Lord.  I can't take this cold any more."  My prayer was answered.  Now, you're about to see what I did for you people.

HOW BIG IS THE MILKY WAY GALAXY?
It's really, really big, baby!

Light travels at 186,000 miles per second or, to put it another way, 67 million miles per hour.  Traveling at that speed....24/7....it takes light 100,000 years to go from one end of the galaxy to the other.

I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LOVES SOUTH DAKOTA!
According to United Van Lines, South Dakota was the 4th most popular state for folks moving from one state to another last year.  The other popular states included Oregon, Colorado, Texas, North and South Carolina and Nevada.

Why are people choosing those states?  Lower cost of living and a better chance for a job.

WIND CHILLS WILL STILL BE 20 TO 30 BELOW THIS MORNING
This is just too much winter.  The Friday forecast calls for Rain, snow and sleet.  There's no end to this!

IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I'VE HEARD THIS INTERVIEW WITH ELVIS AND, MY FRIEND, LINDY SHANNON

ANOTHER LEGENDARY SINGER IS CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY TODAY
DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY celebrates her 77th birthday.  No one could ever forget her performance of "GOLDFINGER".

AND, HERE'S ANOTHER MEMORY!

JUST LIKE ME
THE DC-9 IS OLD BUT NOT FORGOTTEN!
I neglected to mention the demise of the DC-9 aircraft when the last of its kind made its final Delta flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta on Monday.

I flew a lot of miles, in the old days, on the DC-9 and I loved that plane.  There are so many memories...like the night I was the only passenger on a North Central DC-9 flight from Minneapolis to La Crosse.  It gave me an idea of what it would be like to be rich with my very own private jet.  I sure got some great service from the flight attendant that night!

Then, there was another DC-9 night flight from Rapid City to Denver, in a snow storm with a hole in the side of the plane that I'll never forget! The  "little plane that could" got us to the mile high city and performed like a champ.

I loved that plane.  Not too big, not too small.  It was "just right" for those small airports in the old days.  Alas, like me, its most useful days are over but there's still a little gas left in the tank!

YOU MEAN YOU ACTUALLY HEARD THE BISON SAY HE DIDN'T MIND THE COLD??

I'LL BET YOU'VE NEVER SEEN THIS BIRD BEFORE!
Maybe Donnie has, since it's the national bird of Peru, but I didn't see one when I was there and never heard of it until this morning.

It's called a "Cock of the Rock" and it's the oddest looking bird I've ever seen!

TUESDAY JANUARY 7: STILL COLD BUT WE'RE SEEING SOME SUN TODAY.

OH NO!
I DIDN'T DO A DAMN THING TODAY
WHAT DOES THAT SAY
ABOUT TOMORROW?

I'M TOASTY WARM
I received an afghan that mother made years ago from Donnie today.  It arrived just in time.  I've been cold all day and it's keeping my shoulders warm.

I've stood up to the cold pretty good until today.  It's been too cold too long.  I'm losing my sense of humor.

THIS IS NOT A GOOD DAY

AT HIS PRIME

OUR 7:00 AM WIND CHILL
WAS 34 BELOW

BETTER SHAVE THIS MORNING
(who knew?)

IT TAKES ALL KINDS
The most interesting story of the day has to be the one from Australia where it took police, firemen, paramedics, a search and rescue squad and a lot of olive oil to free a 20 year old naked man who got stuck in a top loading washing machine.

One would think a 20 year old man would be old enough to know better.  One who thought that would be very naïve.

A WARNING TO
WISCONSIN TRAVELERS

They suggest that anyone travelling in the current winter conditions should ensure they have the following:

Shovel
Blankets or sleeping bag
Extra clothing including hat and gloves
24 hours worth of food
De-Icer
Rock Salt
Flashlight with spare batteries
Road Flares or Reflective Triangles
Full gas Can
First Aid Kit
Booster cables

I looked like an idiot when I got on the bus this morning.

THOSE GEORGIA PEACHES ARE FROSTY TOO!

Late yesterday afternoon,  Lynne sent an email that said, "Just looking at temperatures.  We have 13 below, here in Wisconsin, and Dawn has 13 above in Georgia.

She and her doggie arrived back home on the 3rd and she thought they were going to be warm again.  Not So!  Crazy weather all over."

3D: LOSING ITS LUSTER...AGAIN?
I ran across an article, this morning, that reports ticket sales for 3D movies are on a steady decline with every new flick that comes out.

Apparently, audiences have decided a good film is a good film and 3D doesn't make it any better.  There are a few of us left that can remember that audiences reached the same conclusion, back in the 50's, the first time 3D was introduced.

A gimmick is a gimmick and 3D will always be, for the most part, a gimmick that really doesn't add enough to a bad story to sell more tickets.

AND, TALKING ABOUT THE GOOD OLD DAYS....
PAUL REVERE IS 76 TODAY!

WARMER WEATHER TODAY!
With any kind of luck, the mercury, in the old thermometer, could rise above zero to 2 above.  I know it's not much but it's a step in the right direction.  And, wind chills, today, will be a balmy 30 to 35 below zero.  At this rate, we might see temperatures get up to double digits by the first day of spring.

If you're bad you'll die and burn in the fires of hell.  If you're really, really, really bad you'll die and freeze your ass off in the winter winds of Wisconsin.

MONDAY JANUARY 6: I'M GROWING WINTER WEARY

I'M BEGINNING TO HATE THIS WINTER

THEY SAY WE'LL BE UP TO 31 BY FRIDAY
31 will feel like a heat wave!  I can hardly wait.

BRAVING THE ELEMENTS
I made a run over to Co-op and, being the sturdy Viking that I am, I didn't think it was all that cold even though they say the wind chill is 40 below.  I will admit, however, that I don't think I would have wanted to walk much farther than Co-op.  I don't think it would take long to start turning blue.

There's a web page called GRANDPARENTS.COM that made me feel so much better this morning.  They're showing photos of some of the most famous aging stars in Hollywood and they're not lookin' good!  Take a look and see what you think.

IT'S STUFF LIKE THIS
THAT MAKES ME PROUD
OF MY DUTCH BLOOD!

STILL TOO MANY DEATHS
BUT IT'S FEWER THAN IT HAS BEEN

TEMPERATURE 12 BELOW
WIND CHILL 33 BELOW
AT 1:00 a.m.

.

This is just nuts.  Weather like this should be against the law.  The forecast calls for a high of 14 below today.  14 below!  What the hell can you do with 14 below except sit in the house and see if it warms up to 13 below.

To say "we are not pleased" is, very much, an understatement.

TODAY IS THREE KINGS DAY
Celebrated on the 6th of January, it recalls the account in Matthew of the "wise men from the East" who came to visit the baby Jesus.  Matthew is the only place in the Gospels where this story is told.   It does not say how many "kings" there were but it mentions three gifts given to the child so the 3 wisemen tradition was born.

By the way, if you'd like to celebrate Christmas again, Orthodox Christmas, which goes by the Gregorian calendar, is today.

Merry Christmas to our Orthodox friends.

In case you're wondering, SPRING is 72 days away (and it can't come soon enough).

My hands burn.  Skin as dry as old leather.  Winter really dries me up.  Lot's of St. Ives Moisturizer needed!

I just got an email from Walgreen's.  Tomorrow is Seniors Day.
20%off all the Walgreen's house brand items if you're 55 or over or have an AARP card.  If I can get over there without freezing I'd better take advantage of that.

NEWS FROM LYNNE:

" We are not going anywhere.  Way too cold.

Dawn and her pup were here for a week and luckily missed this cold wave.  We had such a good time with the family and drove up for a day visit with her Grandma.  Weather in Georgia is much warmer and she had a safe trip back before the snow fell.  Just a little snow on her way.

Right now it is 8 degrees but -12 with the wind and it is cloudy.  Prediction for Monday is -19 with feeling like -46.  Hope everyone stays warm and keep their pets inside."

SUNDAY JANUARY 5: THE SERIOUSLY COLD WEATHER HAS ARRIVED

ANOTHER COLD GAME DAY:

I took the garbage out today but I didn't venture any farther.  That was all the cold I needed.

More cold air will move down from Minnesota tonight bringing wind chills to 50 below zero tonight.

I may try to run to the store tomorrow but I won't spend too much time outside.

I rode downstairs with a Holmen teacher who lives here.  She said they closed the schools there for tomorrow and she thinks they closed the La Crosse schools too.

This is, exactly, the kind of crap I think about in the morning before I get dressed for the day.

BEST TWEET OF THE MORNING:

.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE
REMEMBER YOUR PETS

To celebrate bird day here's a talented bird you may not have seen (or heard) before.  It's a lyre bird.

And, we can't have bird day without a bird joke.

A bird lover told her priest that she had two talking parrots and they only knew how to say, "Hi!  We're prostitutes, do you want to have some fun?"

The priest was shocked but told the lady he had a solution to her problem.  He said, "I have two male parrots and I've taught them to pray the Rosary.  Bring your two parrots over here and I'll put them in the cage with my parrots.

The lady brought the two female birds over and they put them in the cage with the males.  Immediately, the two females said, "Hi!  We're prostitutes.  Do you want to have some fun?"

One male parrot looked at the other male parrot and said, "Throw the beads away.  Our prayers have been answered."

This will be a quiet day at home for me.  I'm totally tuckered after yesterdays social whirl.

I went to lunch at Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine with Paul and Dorothy and we had such a nice visit.

They were just back from a trip to Colorado and had lots of nice pictures of the home Friend bought in Colorado Springs with a view of Pikes Peak, no less.

Then it was dinner at Arctic Spring with Carl, Kathy, Rita and Roger to celebrate Carl's birthday which is actually today, by the way.  It's amazing how well he's aged.  He doesn't look a day over 75.
TODAY IS

This is a really neat, short, video about bunnies and wolves.

Here's my tip of the day.
