NORWEGIANS ARE EGG KNOCKERS AND THEY'RE NOT ALONE

If you were in Norway, at Easter time, you'd be playing THE EGG KNOCKING GAME!  If you're Norwegian you should already know how to play this.  Everyone plays it in Norway.

Here's the game.  Everyone chooses an egg.  Then everyone pairs up.  The two partners take turns tapping their egg against their partners egg.  The first egg to crack is the loser.  The winner goes on to challenge the other winners and they start knocking and cracking again and this goes on until there's only one Norwegian left with an egg that isn't cracked.

Now, tell the truth.  Isn't that the dumbest game you have ever heard of in your life?  Only a Norwegian could think of such a thing.  That's what I thought when I first read about it.

Alas!  This isn't just a Norwegian thing.  Believe it or not, THE DUTCH ARE EGG KNOCKERS TOO!  But, the Dutch go one better.  Once their eggs are all cracked they gather wood and go up on the highest hill they can find (which isn't very high in Holland) and play another game to see who can build the biggest bonfire.

What is it with these people?
I'm thinking the days are too short and the nights are too long.

FILLING UP THE BUSSES

I just read an interesting statistic.  According to POPULAR MECHANICS, more than 750 million people travel by bus each year.  That's more passengers than AMTRAK and domestic airlines serve combined.

HERE'S WHAT RETIRED PEOPLE DO

THIS LITTLE PIGGY SAID..........

This  is a true story, proving how fascinating the mind of a six year old  is. They  think so logically.

A teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs  to her class.

She  came to the part of the story where first pig was trying to gather the  building materials for his home.

She  read “And so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw  and said: ‘Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my  house?’”

The  teacher paused then asked the class: “And what do you think the man said?”

One  little boy raised his hand and said very matter-of-factually... “I think the  man would have said – I'll be damned!!  A  talking pig!”

MAGGIE'S MAKES NEWS

FROM DONNIE
I heard an NPR radio report (the typical election man-on-the-street interviews) from MAGGIE'S CAFE IN ONALASKA.  We remember when MR. D's was where the national media hung out during every presidential campaignWith Mr. D gone, apparently Maggie's now offers that hometown charm the media loves.

WANT TO KNOW ONE OF THE REASONS FOOD IS SO EXPENSIVE?

According to the 1940 census, out this morning, La Crosse had 130 grocery stores in 1940.  Today we have 7.

OH BOY!! HAVE I GOT A HOUSE FOR YOU!!!

KATHERINE HEPBURN'S ESTATE IS UP FOR SALE FOR $30 MILLION and, after looking at the pictures, I've decided that I could be comfortable here.  Check it out below.

IT'S OFFICIAL:

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE REPORTS:
La Crosse Municipal Airport had an average temperature of 50.4 degrees. This was 15.9 degrees above the 1981-2010 March normal of 34.5 degrees. This easily surpased the previous record of 47.1 degrees in 1878. March of 2012 was even 2.6 degrees warmer than the 1981-2010 April average. Only 30 Aprils (monthly records date back to 1873 - 139 Aprils) were warmer than this March.

THINK ABOUT IT

QUOTE OF THE DAY comes from M. I. T. economist Daron Acemoglu.

"When one person can write a check to finance your whole campaign, how inclusive will you be, as an elected official, to listen to competing voices?"

THERE'S A LIMIT TO EVERYTHING

I watched 60 MINUTES, last night, and they had a report on the "evils of sugar".  Apparently, sugar is as bad for you as salt.  Maybe even "badder".

Well, that's it.  I had to give up the salt and I didn't complain....much....but I'll be damned if I'm going to give up sugar too.
The NATIONAL ARCHIVES ON LINE (CLICK HERE TO VIEW IT) will release the 1940 census, this morning, on the website.  This was taken in April, of that year, just a month before I was born.  Names and addresses of every person in La Crosse (or any other city) will be made available, for the first time, after 72 years of confidentiality.  This should be a great way of spending the morning; looking up family members names!

I'm guessing the website will be swamped today so you might have trouble connecting but you can always try another day.

LA CROSSE HISTORY

There's a great photo of Teddy Roosevelt in the LA CROSSE TRIBUNE this morning that was taken in 1904.  He was in La Crosse, for a couple of hours, while on a cross country trip.  Note State Bank and Doerflingers in the background.

BIG STAR BIRTHDAYS TODAY

How could I have forgotten JANE POWELL?  It's been a long time since I've heard anything about her but she's still going strong at 84 today.  She's married to Charles Osborne (host on Turner Classic Movie Channel).  They have a home in Manhattan and another in Connecticut.  Osborne is her fifth husband.

And, who could forget DEBBIE REYNOLDS?  She's also celebrating a birthday today.  Her 80th.

By the way, there could be a connection made between Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell.  The connection would be Elizabeth Taylor who was a bridesmaid at Jane Powell's wedding to her first husband and Jane Powell was a bridesmaid at Elizabeth's first wedding to Nicky Hilton.

And, nobody could forget the connection between Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor.

A QUOTE FROM SOCRATES
