1.5 MILLION without power in the Northeast and it isn't even winter yet.  Talk about a lousy Halloween trick!
Always good to hear from Gladys.

"Our weather has been really nice.  The leaves are hanging on pretty good.  I've had them picked up a couple times but there will be more.

Expecting company from Yankton on Sunday and Tuesday from Sioux City and Omaha."
You've got to hear this!
They're now selling ice cream made from CAMELS MILK in merry old England.  The couple that has the camels are priceless as they tell us about their great taste treat.  Hear the BBC interview here

I didn't shave this morning. I hope you don't mind.

Hope you weren't planning a trip to Australia for today.  Quantas employees have gone out on strike.  All flights are cancelled.

A statement from Quantas said all flights in the air would continue on to their destinations.  Probably a good idea when you're several thousand feet up.
On Twitter, this morning, a lady from the eastern part of the state said her birdbath was completely frozen...not just frosted over...when she checked it around 3 A.M.

That's a pretty good sign of winter, isn't it?  Another good indication that winter is moving in:  I put the long johns on yesterday.
They started putting up the Rotary Club Christmas Light display, yesterday, in Riverside Park.  It's about a month before they turn the lights on but it takes a good month to put 2.6 million lights in place.
Save these lines.  They may come in handy some day.

The last thing I want to do is hurt you but it's still on my list.

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

Evening news is when they start with "Good Evening" and then proceed to tell you why it isn't.

Whenever I fill out an application, in the line that says, "in case of emergency call...." I put "Doctor".

I didn't say it was your fault.  I said I was blaming you.

You do not need a parachute to sky dive.  You only need a parachute to sky dive twice.

There's a fine line between cuddling and holding someone down so they can't get away.

You're never too old to learn something stupid.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
HEY!
This is my day.
Show a little respect.
Bring tuna.

TRICK OR TREAT at the downtown La Crosse stores will be today from 11 to 4.  I wonder.  Is that just for kids?  I'm in my second childhood.  Does that count?

6 to 12 inches of snow for the Northeast?  I feel bad for you folks but, at the same time, I'm thinkin' "better you than us"!
I'm reading "Beijing Welcomes You" by Tom Scocca and I love it.  You'll learn a lot about China along the way but the main story is the days and months leading up to the Olympics in the Chinese capital.  Read the review in the WASHINGTON POST
WHATTA YOU THINK OF THAT?  After 30 years, Donnie and Marie Osmond are going to cut another album.  That's great!
The sky has cleared off and it's gonna be a COLD ONE tonight!

LOSER OF THE DAY

A Wausau man was driving drunk, without a license, while texting, when he hit a State Highway Patrol squad car.
Word from Linda (on the road):
"We're in Sho Low AZ (6300 ft alt) having a lunch stop.  Just drove through the Salt river canyon - really spectacular scenery.  We're on our way back home -should be there by Sunday."

In Norway this would be an uff da.

Josh Dupont will be playing at FEATURES in West Salem, tomorrow night, for their halloween party.  This is one of Rita and Roger's favorite hangouts.
LET THE HO HO'S BEGIN
When I went downtown, this morning, they were putting up the Christmas wreaths on the light poles.  I guess it's festive...but, what do I know?

10:12 AM
It's 36 degrees with a wind chill of 30.  I'm ready to head to the grocery store and those temperatures sound like parka weather to me.
A BIT OF LEVITY FROM CARL:
The wife has been missing a week now.  Police said to prepare for the worst.  So, I went to the thrift shop and got her clothes back.

I have no idea who's counting but I just read that, around the globe, 1400 million cups of coffee are consumed every day.  That represents a hell of a lot of beans!

3.3 EARTHQUAKE IN OKLAHOMA CITY THIS MORNING

Chilly in the apartment this morning.  When I looked at the outside conditions I could understand why.  At 2 AM it was 31 with a wind chill of 26.  That's "turn up the heat time".

THE THINKER

RITA AND ROGER HAVE MORE COLOR THAN THEY KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH.
THE POTTING SHED
CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS??

FROM DONNIE: "You've heard nothing but drought from us. So, imagine what happens when we go to an actual desert.  That's right, downpour in Phoenix.  Streets are flooded.

The average daily high, here, is 84 this time of year....yesterday in the middle of the afternoon it was 61. I should rent myself out to bring the opposite weather wherever I go."

Nanette Fabray celebrates her 91st birthday today.

The Humane Society has too many cats.  If you know of anyone who might be able to give one a home please let them know.

(Thunder thanks you)
If all goes according to plan, I'll be at Rita and Roger's place for a visit today.  I'll probably have some pictures to share when I get back home.
THEY TELL ME THIS WILL BE A BAD WINTER.

Some beautiful day and night video from the space station:
Rita and Roger's driveway is just beautiful this fall.
But I hope Roger gets those apples picked before they freeze.  Or, maybe, he's waiting for Eve to do it.
WE'VE COME A LONG WAY
Eric Dregni, in his book "Vikings in the Attic", talks about a magazine article, published in 1840, which told about the many Norwegian immigrants arriving in Boston and the fact that many residents of Boston didn't know where Norway was.

In 2001 a Norwegian couple from Trondheim visited Boston and commented that many Bostonians didn't know where Norway was.

No word from Donnie and Linda since El Paso so they must be having a great time in Arizona.
DAMN, I'M GOOD!
There's an article in the La Crosse Tribune, this morning, that I found interesting.  It's a commentary by Dr. Zorba Paster, who you may have heard on the PBS Ideas Network.

He says, if people took care of four common health issues it could save a million lives.

CLICK HERE TO READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE

I have all the health issues but, unlike the majority of Americans, I'm taking care of all of them.  Most people are ignoring the four issues.

If you're over 50, you probably need an aspirin a day.  Check with your doctor and he'll probably tell you to take it.  My doctors did and I do.

Most people who have high blood pressure are not taking care of it.  I do now but I didn't take care of it soon enough so I have kidney disease.  (high blood pressure is the 2nd leading cause of kidney disease. Diabetes is #1)

Most people with high cholesterol aren't taking care of it.  I'm taking my medicine and the doctors say my cholesterol numbers, now, are super great.

And, there are still too many people smoking..I'm not one of them anymore.

So, I'm doing all I can.  If you're not you're gonna die.  On the other hand, so am I.  When you come right down to it, we're all headed for the same end.  It's just a matter of when.

CONGRATULATIONS BOEING!

787: TOKYO TO HONG KONG
The first commercial flight of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is history.  The flight landed in Hong Kong, today, after a four hour, eight minute flight from Tokyo.

I thought Rita and Roger's Halloween decorations were so neat.
And then I saw this........
Just in time for Halloween from LONELY PLANET it's the 10 spookiest buildings in the world and some of them are pretty far out.  Great article.  Clicking on "Lonely Planet" will take you there.
Good thing Roger wasn't in St. George, Utah on Sunday.  A flatbed truck that was carrying 25 million bees was involved in an accident, rolled over and released the bees.  The driver and his wife ended up in the hospital with bee stings.  Several others were stung too.  Let's hope the bees aren't making a "beeline" to Wisconsin!
I look down the list, every day, of famous people having birthdays and I've noticed that if they're under 60 I have no clue who they are.  I'm afraid the parade has passed me by.

One of the lovely ones over 60 is Marion Ross who played the mom on HAPPY DAYS.  She is celebrating her 83rd birthday today and, boy, does she look good!

Here she is in an interview she did last year.
I mentioned, the other day, that everybody talked about the World Series when we were kids and now I don't hear anyone mention it.  I thought, maybe, it was just me but, I guess not.

The La Crosse Tribune is running a poll, today, asking, "Are you watching the World Series?"  4% say "YES".  73% say "NO" and the rest said they watched "a few games".  Wonder what Babe Ruth would think of that?

ROLLER COASTER WEATHER FOR DENVER
They had a high of 80 today.  Tomorrow COLD AND SNOW.  Up to 6 inches before it's done.
Could it be a rain maker for Texas?
A PICTURE FROM RON
"This big boy was just in our back yard for a drink."

An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years.  He had a large pond that was properly shaped for swimming so he fixed it up with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some orange and lime trees.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond to look it over, as he hadn't been there for a while.

He grabbed a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.  As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.

As he came closer, he saw a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.

He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.

One woman shouted at him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"

The old man frowned and said, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond.

Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."

Some old men can still think fast.
Rita and Roger are decorated for Halloween.  Forget the tricks. Let the treating begin!
Only two more weeks of Daylight Savings Time.  Then the really long nights begin.

LET US ENDEAVOR TO LIVE SO THAT WHEN WE COME TO DIE EVEN THE UNDERTAKER WILL BE SORRY~Mark Twain

It was October 23, 1921 that the Green Bay Packers played against the Minneapolis Marines in their first game as an NFL team.  6,000 fans cheered the Packers to a 7 to 6 win.

JOHNNY CARSON WAS BORN IN CORNING, IOWA ON THIS DATE IN 1925

Hard to believe that it was 29 years ago, today, that I moved to Texas.  A lot of water under the bridge since then!

DID YOU KNOW THAT CHEVROLET IS 100 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR?

Duane isn't the only one hospitalized with pneumonia.  Loretta Lynn was diagnosed with the same illness, this weekend.

EMPTY STORES IN MALLS ACROSS AMERICA UP FROM 8.8% LAST YEAR TO 9.4% THIS YEAR

I should have mentioned this yesterday when we were celebrating Nut Day but I just read about it this morning.

Until now, I'll bet you had no idea what the largest nut in the world is so I'll tell you.

The worlds largest nut is the Coco de Mer nut that grows on the Coco de Mer Palm tree which only grows on the islands of Praslin and Curieuse which are part of the Seychelles.

The nut is so rare that every tree and every nut is owned by the government.  It's against the law to taste them and, if you want to export them, you need a licence for each and every nut.

So, stick that in your pistachio.

THE METRO AREA OF PHOENIX COVERS 470 SQUARE MILES

LINDA GOT THE NEW LAPTOP UP AND RUNNING.
I had an email from her this morning.

"Hello from El Paso. We're in the Doubletree, on the 11th floor, right in the downtown area -- the theatre where Don will attend the concert is just a couple of blocks away.  and, as a matter of fact, we ran into his friend, the conductor, whose room is just around the corner from ours -but I'll bet he's in a suite.  No complaints about our room tho - love the view from up high - very comfortable room.

Beautiful drive so far -- love this southern part of Texas . We stayed in a little historic hotel in Fort Davis last night. - that's where Macdonald Observatory is - dramatic countryside- scrub desert, lots of cactus and yuccas, rock hills - we could see remnants of the wildfires from several months ago.

We'll head out early this morning for the drive through new Mexico up to Phoenix and Surprise -- I suppose it will take us at least 8 hours to get there."
