NATIIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STATEMENT

Excessive heat warning remains in effect until 10 PM CDT Friday...

* expect the heat to continue today and again Friday as high temperatures approach or break records. Adding in the humidity... heat indices will top out between 100 and 115 during the afternoon and evening hours. Plan on little relief tonight with lows mainly in the 70s... though locations in the Mississippi River valley may not drop below 80.

* If proper precautions are not taken... this heat can result in an increased risk of heat related illnesses... such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work... the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency... dial 9 1 1.
