AUGUST 2014

Thursday, October 10, 2013

This years Mental Health Day is focusing on the mental health of older people and the recent increases in suicide.

Another sunny day with highs near 75 today. Hard to believe this beautiful weather so many days in a row.

By the way, AccuWeather is about the best weather forecaster there is and they say we'll have ABOVE AVERAGE SNOWFALL in our part of the world this winter so get the shovels out and make sure the snow blower is gassed up and ready to go!

THREE CHEERS TO THE POLITICIANS OF ILLINOIS!

Rapid City's police chief wrote a wonderful letter to the citizens of that city and he told it like it is.

Having spent years trying to please the guests and passengers and getting beat up for doing it, I can only say he hits the nail on the head.

You know, kids, we've been much too spoiled for much too long and I hope you can survive when it ends...which it will do.  With half, or more, of the worlds human population homeless, starving and tortured, tell me, again, what makes you think you deserve better.

READ HERE WHAT THE CHIEF HAS TO SAY.

The State Bank Chili Cookoff is coming up, again, this weekend.

They've always held it in the parking lot behind the downtown bank but this year they're moving it to Riverside Park.  That should be MUCH better.  The parking lot was way too congested.

Big doings in Washington today and I wish I was there to see it.

The wax figure of Betty White will be unveiled today at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in Washington and it sure does look like Betty!

There are big changes coming to the neighborhood.

The changes won't start until 2017, but it's a change that's badly needed.  I hope I'm still around to see it but 4 years is too far into the future to plan on anything when you're 73.

This ain't your everyday Holiday Inn!

Wish you were here. We'll have sunshine and 75 degrees in La Crosse today.

Deer in the late afternoon light at Donnie and Linda's house.

Hard to believe, 8 days into October and our afternoon high was 78 degrees in La Crosse.

Tomorrow we'll be up around 70 again and that's fine with me.  Every day like this is one less day of cold weather.

I'M GLAD I GOT TO THE CLINIC EARLY TO GET MY SHOT.

There weren't many ahead of me when I got in but the waiting room was filling up fast when I left.

GOT ANOTHER NOTE FROM DUANE THIS MORNING. I FEEL SO BAD FOR THOSE PEOPLE.

"Going back to 1897, this is the worst blizzard in Black Hills history.  Bodies are now being found in homes and cars.  Many deaths.  Dead cattle everywhere because of ice sticking to their fur.

The city council and county commissioners called emergency sessions and declared the city a disaster area.

In Spearfish roofs are caved in.  The middle school is closed due to a collapsed roof.  Gas is scarce and we're getting no deliveries from outside."

WIND GUSTS TO 30 MPH WITH A HIGH OF 70 IN LA CROSSE TODAY.

TODAY IS FACE YOUR FEARS DAY.

IT'S SENIOR CITIZENS DAY AT WALGREENS AND I HAVE PILLS TO PICK UP SO I'LL STOP IN AFTER I GET MY FLU SHOT THIS MORNING.

BEST BUY NEEDS ONE PERSON TO JOIN THEIR GEEK SQUAD.

I could use the ENTIRE Geek Squad working 24 hours a day right here in this apartment to keep me out of trouble.

Donnie doesn't understand why I have so much trouble and neither do I.  The only thing I can think of is that I was just never meant to interact with machines.

My latest problem began a couple mornings ago when I could not get any audio with You Tube videos.  I finally noticed that the little volume icon at the bottom of the video was turned off.  I clicked it on and all was well.  Then I noticed that with every video I went to the volume was turned off and I had to turn the audio back on to watch the video.

It worked fine one day and the next day I had this problem.  I have no idea what happened, in the overnight hours, while I was sleeping and, of course, I have absolutely no idea how to fix it.

I figured it wasn't a big deal to turn the volume on with each video so I could live with it.  Then, in talking to Rita yesterday, she mentioned that she couldn't get the audio on any of the You Tube videos on my blog.  And, she said, clicking on the audio icon below the video did not turn the audio on at her end.

Obviously when I embed the video on the website, all of a sudden, it carries with it the video sound in the off position and when she tries to turn it on it doesn't work.

As I say, I have NO idea how to fix this problem and wouldn't even know where to begin.

If there's a geek in the crowd......I NEED HELP!

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY!

Rita, Roger and I took a beautiful drive through Amish country, this afternoon, on our way up to Viroqua.  The leaves are just starting to turn.  Rita figures another week, or so, and they'll be in full color.

Aunt Wilda looks so good and we had such a nice visit with her.  She is always happy to get company.

It was a wonderful outing.

THEY FINALLY GOT THE RAPID CITY AIRPORT OPEN AGAIN.

DUANE SAYS:

"Rapid City is still in chaos.  No schools open yet.  Lots of businesses still closed.  Not much street travel.  Only one way open on streets.  11,000 still without power.  Down from 28,000 yesterday."

THERE'S AN INTERESTING ARTICLE IN THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, THIS MORNING, ON WHICH IS BETTER; THE HUMAN CHECKER AT THE SUPERMARKET OR THE "DO IT YOURSELF" COMPUTER CHECKERS.

YOU CAN READ THE ARTICLE HERE but it's no surprise to me that, in this case, the human is much faster and more accurate than the computer.  That's the reason there are long lines waiting for the human checker while the machines sit there vacant.  I tried the machine once and once was too many times.

I'm a Gemini.  Gemini's don't tend to deal well with machines.  Donnie can't understand why I have so much trouble with my computer.  The stars are part of the problem and the other part is that I'm not too bright.

HAVING DUTCH BLOOD ON ONE SIDE AND NORWEGIAN BLOOD ON THE OTHER I'D SAY IT'S A TOSS UP. NEITHER ONE MAKE A LOT OF SENSE WHEN THEY OPEN THEIR MOUTH.

And, this is one of the funniest Norwegian videos you've ever seen.

THE MUSICAL "CATS" OPENED ON BROADWAY ON OCTOBER 7, 1982. IT HAD A RECORD RUN OF 7,485 PERFORMANCES.

AFTER SUCH A GLOOMY SUNDAY, WE SURE PICKED A GOOD DAY TO GO TO VIROQUA.

The forecast calls for a sunny day with a high near 60.  And, it just gets better!  Tomorrow though Friday every day should be sunny with afternoon highs near 70.  That's got to be perfect fall weather!

ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY!

THEY DONE GOOD TODAY!

GLAD I'M NOT GROCERY SHOPPING IN RAPID CITY TODAY!

DUANE SAYS:

"Looking for my snow boots and shoe  traction  slip ons.  Want to get to my snow scoops and at least get the north door so it opens."

DONNIE SAYS:

"Halloween is old news. Christmas decorations are on the shelves at Costco in Austin."
I got a kick out of the 6th grade teachers at Vernon, Connecticut middle school who have banned the kids from quoting the Geico "Hump Day" commercial over and over and over and over again.  Not just on Wednesday but every day of the week.  I suppose it does get on their nerves, after a while, but you gotta admit it's on of the cutest commercials EVER!  I just love it.

A SPECIAL HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DAVID HIDALGO WHO IS CELEBRATING HIS 59TH BIRTHDAY TODAY.

David was a member of one of my all time favorite bands Los Lobos who are, probably, best remembered for their cover of the Richie Valens hit, La Bamba

The song was an old Mexican folk song that came from the beautiful state of Vera Cruz where Donnie and I enjoyed Carnival (Mardi Gras) many years ago. It was featured in the 1987 movie "La Bamba" starring Lou Diamond Phillips.  Here's a scene, from the movie, featuring Los Lobos.

TELL ME...HOW BAD CAN THE ECONOMY REALLY BE WHEN YOU CONSIDER THAT SALES OF HALLOWEEN COSTUMES ARE UP MORE THAN 10% OVER LAST YEAR?

What's hot for Halloween wear this year?  From what I read, zombies are still a popular item for 2013.   The most interesting trend is inspired by the "Great Gatsby" movie.  1920's costumes are hot this year so if you still have your old flapper dresses you're all set!!

A GLOOMY SUNDAY AROUND HERE WITH HEAVY CLOUDS AND, MAYBE, SOME RAIN LATE THIS AFTERNOON.

Temperatures will stay on the "coolish" side.  Mostly in the 50's this afternoon.  Tomorrow looks better with sunshine and a high near 65.  That's good because Rita, Roger and I are planning a trip up to Viroqua, tomorrow, for a visit with Aunt Wilda.

TODAY IS THE DAY TO GET WILD AND CRAZY!!

GUNDERSON CLINIC WILL START GIVING FLU SHOTS ON MONDAY. i'LL PLAN TO GET ONE THIS COMING WEEK. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!

RON SENT PICTURES FROM RAPID CITY.

This does look like a winter wonderland!

I WAS SO SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT THE SUDDEN DEATH, IN SUPERIOR, OF KATHY'S OLDEST BROTHER.

I'm sure thinking of her and the family at this sad time.

IT'S A RECORD SETTING SNOWSTORM.

DON'T FORGET TO TAKE AN APPLE FOR THE TEACHER ON MONDAY!

DUANE IS COPING WITH THE WEATHER BUT JUST BARELY.

"The storm knocked out power for over an hour.  Got candles and flashlights out.  I think I need a Coleman Lantern.

My Niece and her husband have no power and snowdrifts are blocking their driveway so they can't get out.

I may need some help with my driveway and broken tree branches.

What a mess this is!"

DUANE JUST CHECKED IN FROM RAPID CITY

"Mean, wicked blizzard here.  All schools are closed, the airport is shut down.  Lot's of closures, including the School of Mines.  The winds are really fierce."

SPEARFISH THIS MORNING

WINTER HAS ARRIVED OUT WEST!

Rapid City is getting hit with a major winter storm today.  They're expecting 10 to 18 inches of snow with higher amounts in the foothills.  Winds could gust as high as 70 MPH giving them a real head start on winter!!

They've picked up 3 to 5 inches of snow in Worland, Wyoming with some tree damage reported.  Blowing snow is causing trouble for travelers.

March 20, the first day of spring, sure seems a long way away, doesn't it?

DOES YOUR LAWN NEED MOWING? FARMERS ALMANAC ASAYS THIS IS THE DAY TO DO IT...UNLESS IT'S RAINING, OF COURSE.

WE CAN'T LET THIS DAY GO BY WITHOUT REMEMBERING JANICE JOPLIN

90% CHANCE FOR THUNDERSTORMS TODAY WITH A 90% CHANCE TONIGHT.

This is the latest from the National Weather Service.

PERIODS OF THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY AS A STRONG STORM SYSTEM IMPACTS THE AREA.

VERY HEAVY RAIN IS LIKELY WITH THESE STORMS, ESPECIALLY FRIDAY NIGHT ALONG AND NORTH OF INTERSTATE 90 WHICH COULD LEAD TO LOCALIZED FLOODING DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH RAIN OCCURS BEFORE THEN.

IN ADDITION TO THE HEAVY RAIN CONCERN THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR SOME OF THE STORMS FRIDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH SATURDAY TO PRODUCE LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. TORNADOES COULD OCCUR AS WELL FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING ESPECIALLY ACROSS SOUTHERN MINNESOTA AND NORTHERN IOWA.

WE'VE HAD A RAINY AFTERNOON IN LA CROSSE. WE NEED ALL THE RAIN WE CAN GET.

There were some heavy storms in the area but they missed the city.

Meanwhile, it doesn't look like tropical storm Karen will bring any much needed rain to Texas.

THIS IS FOR OUR HUMMINGBIRD FANS

AND, WHILE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT FEELING GOOD.......

RITA IS TAKING ONE OF THE DOGS, DUKE, TO THE DOCTOR.

Very listless, can hardly move, won't even wag his tail.

I have, exactly, the same symptoms.  Maybe I should see the vet.

I HAVEN'T HAD ANY SALT IN MY KITCHEN FOR A LONG TIME. IT'S NOT EASY BUT YOU LEARN TO LIVE WITH IT.

NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. WINTER IS ON THE WAY!

Worland, Wyoming will see rain change to snow with 2 to 4 inches of snow in the area along with winds gusting to 50 MPH or more.  By late tonight and tomorrow morning, travel could become impossible in the mountain passes.

In the Rapid City area 6 or more inches of snow is possible in the foothills of the Black Hills.  The snow, along with gusty winds is sure to make driving pretty miserable.

We'll still have summer weather in the La Crosse area today with isolated thunderstorms and an afternoon high near 78 degrees.

We could see some severe weather with large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and even tornadoes tomorrow afternoon into Saturday.
80% CHANCE FOR THUNDERSTORMS
TODAY AND TONIGHT

FROM TWITTER:

DUANE SAYS THE COLD WEATHER WILL KILL THE OUTSIDE FLOWERS AND BUGS

Rapid City is looking at a very nasty Friday with lots of wind, rain and snow.  The forecast high for Friday is only 37 degrees and Friday night will see temperatures fall into the upper 20's.  Further west, Worland, Wyoming (Rick and Angela's home) is looking for 1 to 3 inches of SNOW Thursday night.

I THINK ESQUIRE MAGAZINE HAS SAID IT ALL, CONCERNING THIS CONGRESS, IN ONE LINE

Speaking to the voters, the magazine says, "We looked at our legacy of self-government and we handed ourselves over to the reign of morons."

DON McLEAN CELEBRATES HIS 68TH BIRTHDAY TODAY. WITHOUT A DOUBT, HE WROTE ONE OF THE GREATEST PIECES OF MUSIC FROM MY GENERATION

IF YOU LOVE KIDS THIS WILL MELT YOUR HEART. IF YOU LOVE DOGS THIS WILL MELT YOUR HEART. IF YOU DON'T LOVE KIDS AND DOGS YOU NEED HELP.

The little boy has Down Syndrome.

WE'VE BEEN HAVING SUCH BEAUTIFUL WEATHER THE PAST FEW DAYS THAT I ALMOST FORGOT IT WOULD HAVE TO END SOONER OR LATER

Clouds will start moving in today and bring lightening and heavy rain to the area tonight and thunderstorms will continue to be likely Thursday through Saturday.

Some of the storms could be severe with large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and tornadoes

What a bummer!  We got through the summer without any nasty weather and NOW we get it.

The temperatures are going to start to cool down too.  Highs will be in the 70's through Friday but the weekend will bring highs only in the 50's.

DID YOU KNOW?

Frontier Airlines charges up to $100.00 each way for carry on bags!  Give me a break!!!

I HAVE TO DO A LOAD OF LAUNDRY TODAY SO I WAS SURPRISED THAT THE FIRST ARTICLE I READ THIS MORNING WAS ABOUT A FABRIC THAT CLEANS ITSELF!!

Did you see this?  In the future, you may never have to do laundry again.  The Army has developed a fabric that sheds dirt and nasty stuff like coffee, ketchup, etc.  Your clothes always stay clean and THEY NEVER SMELL!

WATCH THIS!

I'LL BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW I HAD A BAR IN GUTTENBURG, IOWA, DID YOU?

NOW I KNOW, FOR SURE, THAT SUMMER IS GONE AND FALL IS HERE

The surest sign of fall is not the falling leaves or the cooler temperatures.  The surest sign of fall is when the church suppers start and there's one tonight in Houston.

It's at the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, in Houston, Minnesota.  Meatballs, potatoes and gravy, a salad bar, homegrown squash, corn and pie.  Serving starts at 4:00 PM.

THE OCTOBER ISSUE OF NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC IS SPECTACULAR

It's a special photo issue and there are some stunning photos.  And, how do they get such good pictures?  They take a lot of them!  In fact, according to the magazine, they take 1,331 photos for every photo that actually ends up making it into the magazine.

ISN'T THIS JUST ABOUT THE CUTEST PICTURE YOU'VE EVER SEEN?

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN OUR LA CROSSE BLUE STARS DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS PERFORM? THEY PUT ON QUITE A SHOW!

I SURE COULD USE THIS DOG ONE, OR TWO, DAYS A WEEK!

MY BLOOD PRESSURE, THIS MORNING, WAS 121/66.

I feel like a spring chicken!

HOW WAS SEPTEMBER WEATHER IN LA CROSSE THIS YEAR? I'D SAY, "PRETTY GOOD"!

21 days, in September, were fair weather days with only 2 cloudy days.

We didn't get a single thunderstorm.  There were 4 days of heavy rain and 10 days of light rain with 13 days of fog.

Come to think of it, we didn't have any really bad thunderstorms this summer.

A BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ROGER WILLIAMS! HE'S 89 TODAY.

He's the man who really set autumn to music.

LSE TO DFW NON-STOP

With a grant from the department of transportation, the La Crosse Municipal Airport is working toward non-stop air service from La Crosse to Dallas-Ft. Worth via American Airlines.  It could take six-months, or more, to get the route up and running but, if it comes, it could mean big savings in time and money for travelers heading south from La Crosse.

OCTOBER FIRST AND WE'RE WITHOUT A GOVERNMENT

That's, probably, the best news of the day.  With that freak show we elected to congress, this country, I'm sure, will run better without a government.

TALK ABOUT CRAZY WEATHER!

Here we are, October first and the high, today, will be around 75 in La Crosse.  Meanwhile, by the end of this week Duluth could get its first snowfall of the season!  Duluth, normally, doesn't see the first snow until late October.  Go figure.

LA CROSSE WEATHER
