The patent to make motion pictures possible was submitted by Thomas Edison on this date in 1891. The Library of Congress has a brief history that's quite interesting. Especially when you keep in mind that motion pictures on film are now quickly becoming extinct.
It's also interesting, as you'll see in the above history, that it wasn't actually Edison who made the whole thing work. He just put his name to it. Real history isn't always as interesting as the history we make up.
