Guess where the watermelon got its start.  It grew wild in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa and was known, there, as a tsamma melon.  The "desert dwellers" prized the melon as a good source of water.  The watermelon is also depicted in the hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt.  I'll bet you, also, didn't know that there are over 1200 varieties of Watermelon.
