THIS IS THE DAY WE CELEBRATE THE END OF SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES
President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862 but it wasn't until the 18th of June, 1865 that federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and freed the last of the slaves still in captivity.
