A medical report from Rita

"I sneeze, now and then, Roger coughs, now and then, but we are on the mend."

24 hour temperature extremes across the country: 88 in Bullhead City, AZ. 23 below at Big Black River, ME.

Even with a lot of sun, today, we won't get much warmer than 30 degrees.  I don't care what the calendar says.  We're a long way from spring in Wisconsin!

On the other hand, spring has sprung out west.  50 in Worland, today, and 52 in Rapid City!

According to WXOW, there are 2,000 property owners in La Crosse that are at flood risk.

Flood insurance rates for one family went up from $550 to $3,600 and they've never made a flood claim.

Between the congress and the insurance companies, I can't decide which of the two is more repulsive.

I just love this picture.

There's a slight chance for rain or snow Monday night or Tuesday.

We sure don't need either one right now.  We've got several million gallons of water locked up as snow or ice right now so we're going to have more than enough wet in the melting weeks ahead!

This is a neat photo.

Here's a really smart kid. Happy prom night!!

HEY! THIS LOOKS GOOD!

I like this thought.

A super HAPPY BIRTHDAY to ERNIE ISLEY who celebrates birthday #62 today!

With Ernie on drums, this is one of my all time favorite hits from 1973 that brings back a lot of memories.

Today is National Day of Unplugging. A day to unplug your cellphone, iPad, Laptop and all the rest of the electronic stuff and take a look at what's around you!

What do you think?  Maybe one or two, three people, tops, will actually unplug for a whole day?  Let's face it, kids.  We're addicted.

This is really interesting. How much do you know about our state capitols?

Listen closely when he gets to South Dakota.  As is usually the case with someone who has never visited our state, he mispronounces the name of our capitol city.

Have you seen what the Norwegians are up to now??

Norwegian Cruise Lines will launch the biggest cruise ship ever based in Europe next year.  There will be room for 4,100 passengers to cruise the Canary Islands and Morocco.

I don't know, kids.  That many people on one ship would make be a bit nervous, I'm thinking.  But, I suppose I'm wrong.  After all, the Norwegians know what they're doing.....don't they?

The 850 passenger Airbus 380 also makes me wonder if we aren't packing too many people into these new travel vehicles.

I don't think I'd like to go on vacation with that many folks.

Donnie recommends "NEBRASKA".

"You might want to see the movie "Nebraska".  Haven't seen it, myself, but had a close encounter today.

A pest inspector showed up to check our house for termites.  In our conversation he revealed he's from Nebraska and plans to move back there.  Tired of Texas heat and crowded growth.

We swapped Great Plains stories.  Then he pulled out his smart phone and showed me a picture of the movie poster.

'See that old house in the background?', he asked.  Turns out the movie was filmed on his family property."

According to Duane, the Black Hills is getting what I wish we had.

"Today, maybe, 56 degrees.  May get most of the snow off the north driveway.  Saturday and Sunday; 51 degrees.  We'll see if they're right."

I, almost, forgot the good doctor!

Here's an article that should piss you off.

Did you know that our internet download times are about the slowest in the world?  People in countries like Uruguay and Slovenia enjoy much faster downloads of web sites than we do in the good old USA..the country that, virtually, invented the internet.

Why do you suppose that is??  READ THE STORY HERE to learn that it's because we live under a government that works for the corporations and against you and me.

Can't forget my Texas Days

It was on this date, March 6, 1836, that the Alamo fell to the Mexican forces after a 13 day battle.

I looked up the word "DUDE" in the dictionary to see just exactly what the definition of a DUDE is.

The dictionary said "A dude is a man who is very fancy or sharp in dress and demeanor."

I always wondered why so many people called Roger and I "Dudes".  Now I know.

Just what I need!

I just saw, in the paper, they have an adult computer class at the library on March 11.  The best part is, it's FREE!  I put it on my calendar.  I think I could use that!!

I got a note from Donnie yesterday.

"A splashy puddle picture, evidence that we do get some occasional moisture.  This was ice dripping off the roof."

"And a squirrel picture.  What he was doing with that rug is hard to know, though we suspect he had buried nuts in the pot and was trying to get our anti-frost cover off."

Love this joke Gary sent.

The Tiny Cabin

The social worker from a big city in Massachusetts recently transferred to the mountains of Tennessee and was on her first tour of her new territory when she came upon the tiniest cabin she had ever seen in her life. Intrigued, she went up and knocked on the door.  "Anybody home?" she asked.

"Yep," came a kid's voice through the door.

"Is your father there?" asked the social worker.

"Pa? Nope, he left before Ma came in," said the kid.

"Well, is your mother there?" persisted the social worker.

"Ma? Nope, she left just before I got here," said the kid.

"But," protested the social worker, "are you never together as a family?"

"Sure, but not here," said the kid through the door. "This is the outhouse!"

This is the kind of crazy weather the Black Hills create.

News from Lynne........

"Another 6 plus inches of snow during the night.  Just what we need.  This is getting to be a very long winter.  Luckily, we don’t have to drive anywhere but our kids do.

Bob is filling our bird feeders every day to keep our cardinals happy.  We have up to 7 every day coming for food at our several feeders.  Fun watching them.

The snow has stopped falling now and it is all blue sky and 28 degrees.  We are staying in and just looking outside for the day."

Happy Birthday, Misao!

Our normal high for the 5th of March is 47 degrees.

We'll be lucky to hit 24 this afternoon.  We might get into the low 40's Friday and Sunday but we aren't going to get even close to what we should be for another week, at least.

Summer is short enough in Wisconsin.  We sure don't need this!!

Run for cover!!

RITA REPORTS SHE'S FEELING BETTER THIS MORNING.

"I think I'll lay low one more day and then I'll be ready to go."

WHAT'S GOING ON AT THE PALACE THIS MORNING?

LOOK WHAT'S COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU!

It isn't often but, every once in a while I see a movie I think I would like to see.  This is one of those movies.

TODAYS GOOD NEWS

Warmer air moves in Friday with high temperatures ABOVE THE FREEZING MARK!

ROUGH WINTER IN THE GREENHOUSE

According to a story on WKBT, the heating bills at the local greenhouses have gone through the roof this winter due to the bitter cold.  They've also had a lot of plants freeze while moving them to and from the greenhouses.

If we ever have a spring, come planting time, don't be surprised if the merchandise is a bit pricy this year.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAN STOCKWELL. 78 TODAY.

What a career he had.  Starting out as a child actor at MGM, he appeared in movies as well as television and Broadway.  And, what a list of hits!  "Anchors Away" with Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly, "Gentlemen's Agreement" and  a list of movies, TV and Broadway shows a mile long.  He was 65 years in the business.

For some reason, I always remember him from the 1948 movie, "The Boy with Green Hair".  Gladys, who I mention often, and her first husband, Lee, owned the Marion Theater in those days so we went to the movies a lot.  I remember seeing the movie there.

ANOTHER DISMAL DAY

A lot of clouds and wind chills around zero is what we can expect on this Ash Wednesday.  I think Mother Nature has given up nice weather for lent.

MORE SNOW!

Sounds like we'll have a fresh layer of snow, on the ground, when we get up tomorrow morning.

Snow over northeast South Dakota and Southwest Minnesota will spread into the Mississippi River Valley tonight.

Snow totals will fall between 2 and 6 inches.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the 2 inches around here.  We really don't need any more damn snow.

YIKES! THIS MIGHT MAKE YOU THINK TWICE ABOUT TEXTING AND DRIVING IN SOUTH DAKOTA!

MORE HOTEL ROOMS FOR DOWNTOWN LA CROSSE?

A luxury hotel is already in the works for the old Ross Furniture Building and now a new four story Hilton Hampton Inns and Suites is planned to go up near the Oktoberfest grounds.  Sounds like a lot of rooms to me.

I JUST CHECKED ACCUWEATHER AND THEY'RE SHOWING LIGHT SNOW IN DRIPPING SPRINGS!

I can't imagine Donnie or Linda are too happy to see that!  On the other hand, I remember it snowed once when I was living in Houston and it was a major story!

The snow didn't stick to the ground, of course, and it didn't last more than 15 or 20 minutes but they stopped classes in the schools and let the kids go outside to see it.  Most of them, of course, had never seen snow.

THIS IS INTERESTING

I DON'T WANT TO GO NEAR THE RANCH ANYTIME SOON.

Roger has been fighting a terrible cold and now Rita has it.  She said, "Can't talk or swallow very well."

ICED UP CARS IN TEXAS THIS MORNING!

IT'S NOT JUST FAT TUESDAY.....

There are TWO holidays to celebrate!  It's also...........

I DON'T FEEL SO BAD ABOUT THE COLD

There's ice forming on the trees all the way down to Houston, Texas this morning.  Donnie and Linda are getting in on it too.  Freezing rain is reported around Austin.

DAMN! I JUST MISSED GETTING ON FORBES LIST OF THE RICHEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD.

I see Bill Gates is back on top with $76 billion.

Did you know there are 1,645 billionaires in the world with a net worth of $6.5 trillion.

I look at it this way.  With over a thousand people listed, it's not such an "exclusive" club after all.  And, if you take away the money, what do they have that I don't have?

WE GOT A LITTLE SNOW OVERNIGHT

The forecast says we could get a little more this afternoon.  Temperatures will, finally, warm up to the low 20's but there will be enough wind to make it feel like 2 below.

The bottom line is....still no hint of spring on this Fat Tuesday!

IT'S CARNIVAL TIME!! BEEN THERE. DONE THAT.

I didn't make it to Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Carnival in Rio but I did make it to CARNIVAL IN VERA CRUZ, MEXICO with Donnie many years ago and that's a trip I didn't forget!

As you can see, from this video, Carnival is Vera Cruz is a very big party and we got right in the middle of it.  You'll also see some great Ariel views of the city which looks like it has grown a lot since we were there.

I've mentioned it before but I'll say it again.  Vera Cruz has the most beautiful white sand beach I've ever seen.

Enjoy the video!

IT WAS 11 ABOVE AT 3:00 PM

They say our high tomorrow will be around 23.

23 will feel like a heat wave!

WOW! LOOK AT THIS MISERABLE STORM ALONG THE EAST COAST!

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!

ANOTHER RECORD LOW IN LA CROSSE OVERNIGHT

We got down to 21 BELOW for an all time record low for the third of March.

SIDEWALK SALT IN SHORT SUPPLY

Sidewalks are a mess in La Crosse.  Folks aren't shoveling like they did at the beginning of the season.  On top of that, many stores in town have run out of sidewalk salt and they won't be getting any more this season.

It's been so cold that none of the snow has melted so it's going to be a wet, muddy mess when, and if, it ever warms up.

YOU THINK THAT'S COLD? I'LL SHOW YOU COLD!!

Donnie and Linda are shivering.  He reported it was 23 degrees with a wind chill of 8 early this morning.  That's got to be brutal for them but I would give anything so see 23 degrees again!

At 8 A.M. in La Crosse it was 14 below and that's no wind chill, baby.  That's the real thing!!

A SVEN STORY FROM GARY

Sven, a furniture  dealer from Wisconsin,  decided to expand the line of   furniture in his  store, so he decided to go to Paris   to see what he  could   find.

After  arriving  in Paris , he visited with some manufacturers and selected a   line that he thought  would sell well back home.  To celebrate the new   acquisition, he  decided to visit a small bistro and have a glass of  wine.

As   he sat enjoying his  wine, he noticed that the small place was  quite   crowded,   and that the other  chair at his table was the only vacant seat in the   house. Before long, a  very beautiful young Parisian girl came to his  table ,  asked   him something in  French (which Sven could not understand)  so he  motioned   to  the vacant  chair and invited her to sit down.

He tried to speak to  her   in   English, but she did  not speak his language. After a couple of minutes  of   trying  to  communicate with her, he took a napkin and drew a picture of   a   wine  glass and  showed it to her. She nodded, so he ordered a glass of   wine   for   her.

After sitting together at the table for a while, he  took another  napkin,   and   drew a picture of a  plate with food on it, and she nodded. They left  the   bistro  and found  a quiet cafe that featured a small group playing   romantic   music.

They  ordered  dinner, after which he took another napkin and drew a picture  of a couple  dancing. She nodded, and they got up to dance.  They   danced  until the  cafe was about to close and the band was packing  up.

Back at their  table, the young lady took a napkin and drew a picture of a   four-poster bed.   To this day, Sven has no idea how she figured out he was   in the furniture  business.

IT'S SO DAMN COLD IN LA CROSSE

FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE:
TEMPERATURES WILL BE A BONE CHILLING TEENS TO LOWER 20S BELOW ZERO THIS MORNING, EVEN COLDER IN SOME OF THE COLD DRAINAGE AREAS OF CENTRAL WISCONSIN.

ADDING JUST A LIGHT WIND WILL MAKE IT FEEL 7 TO 8 DEGREES COLDER...WITH WIND CHILLS FROM 20 TO 35 BELOW.

I HOPE DONNIE AND LINDA ARE SAFE AT HOME

It's a nasty morning in Texas.  Weather Warning for FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET until noon today.  The temperature in Austin was down to 24 at 5:00 A.M.

IS YOUR ICE SHANTY STUCK?

Ice "fisherpersons" are supposed to have their ice shanties off the ice by March first but that's easier said than done this year.

With the extreme cold, a few warmer days and then extreme cold again, the shanties are frozen tight to the ice and they won't budge.

It's nasty business when your shanty won't budge but the DNR understands.

Give them a call at  ‪1-800-TIP-WDNR‬

I HOPE YOU'RE NOT PLANNING TO FLY TODAY.

IS IT GOING TO FINALLY WARM UP?

It's looking better.  13 today, 23 tomorrow, 27 Wednesday.  That's still colder than I'd like to see but it's a whole lot better than what we've had.  Keep your fingers crossed!

JERRY, YOU'RE TOO MUCH!

YIPEE! A WARM UP TOMORROW

They say we'll get up to 10 degrees for a high tomorrow.  That may not sound very warm to you southern folks but, considering it was only 3 above at 3:00 this afternoon, 10 degrees for tomorrow sounds good to me!

(SIGH)

AL GOT IT RIGHT

OK. THIS IS JUST NOT FUNNY ANYMORE

A little over 2 weeks to spring and our high, today, will only be 2 above.  We won't get above freezing until next Friday when we could hit 38 but it's only a one day thing.  By Saturday we'll be below freezing again.

No more weather jokes.  Nobody is laughing.  Enough is enough.

I DON'T KNOW IF YOU KNOW THIS BUT, THE WORLDS OLDEST CHEESE WAS NOT FOUND IN WISCONSIN. IT WAS FOUND IN CHINA.

That old cheese was found hanging around the necks of some very old mummies that were, also, found in China.  You can read all about it by clicking right here.

Now, if you're looking for the worlds oldest daddies, those you'll find in Wisconsin.

WHY A RED CARPET?

In 1902 the exclusive passenger train between New York and Chicago was launched with a red carpet stretched the length of the train for boarding passengers to walk on.  The 20th Century Limited became known as the train that offered passengers the "red carpet treatment".

The Oscar carpet covers 16,500 square feet of space and takes 2 days to install.

The last movie I saw at a theater was the remake of "Titanic" that was released 17 years ago.  Well, I actually saw about a half hour of it before I got up and left.  I was the only person on earth who thought it was a total bore.

Needless to say, I'm about as interested in watching the Oscars as I am watching paint dry.
